General Earwa / Norsirai schools?
« on: February 05, 2015, 04:35:19 pm »
I am just wondering if anyone remembers any schools that are primarily norsirai?

Mandate:  recruited from Nroni
Scarlet Spires:  recruited from Ainoni
Saik:  " " Nansur
Vokalati (spelling?): " " Nilnameshi
Cishaurim:  " " Kianene
Mysunsai:  ?
Swayal Compact:  probably the only truly diverse school
Hell, even the College of Luthymae is probably mostly Nansur

I guess technically the consult is mostly norsirai   ;D

Also, I kind of remember Akka mentioning minor schools but never actually naming any.  I also find it odd that Atrithau and Sakarpus dont have schools.  Youd think that being as threatened by sranc as they are they would be ok with any advantage they can get, tusk or not.

General Earwa / Re: Ciphrang Throughout History
« on: February 05, 2015, 04:02:56 pm »
I do have this hunch that the Captain still has some role to play which is a strange thing to say given that he's dead.

Same. I really don't think his "arc" is done, even though he may not actually be directly active in the story. The fact that this whole trilogy basically started with his character's intro also inclines me to believe there's more to the Captain's arc.

I go back and forth on him being a Ciphrang. I lean towards that not being the case, only because Bakker alludes to it so heavily that it feels like it must be a red-herring.

I have a crackpot that the Captain really isn't anything other than a man who had a "near-death experience". At some point he died and his soul witnessed true Hell, but he "bounced back" (to quote Sarl), either because he was somehow resuscitated or maybe through magical means via Kellhus and/or Iyokus.

Regardless, having witnessed Hell, Kosoter was of course never the same man again. It was basically like looking into the Inverse Fire. He realized that no Worldly pain or horror could ever even come close to matching genuine Damnation, and so upon returning from death he was utterly changed. The atrocities he saw and committed became nothing to him, just like the Consult members that saw Damnation. Ironsoul seems a fitting name for the man in this case. This scenario also explains his comment in the lava-filled depths of Cil-Aujas when they all think they're in Hell, but says that it isn't and he knows because he'd already seen Hell. In addition, this explains his absolute, utter conviction to Kellhus. He knows Damnation is real in a way that few do, and for whatever reason he believes that Kellhus is his path to Salvation.

Good post!

The Forum of Interesting Things / Re: Conspiracy or paranoia?
« on: December 31, 2014, 07:46:46 am »
Anything done by establishment (career) politicians of either party is a conspiracy, by those in power to maintain power.  And the only people who want to seriously change the status quo in Washington DC, the Tea Party are reviled as the vilest forms of life in this country, somewhere between a KKK member and Satan himself, by members of the media and anyone dumb enough to believe the very biased news on CNN OR FOX.

I dont look to silly novels for my conspiracy theories.  If you have half a brain and you follow politics, its easy to see whats going on right here in the real world.

Writing / Re: Fan Fic Piece
« on: December 31, 2014, 07:14:51 am »
Just read 'Untitled' and thoroughly enjoyed it!

The only non-bakkerism I noticed was that besides Seswatha (who doesn't count) you only introduced 2 human characters and 1 skin spy!   ;D

Bakker would have named at least 14 more people even if none of them ever got another second of screen time lol

Jokes aside, great piece of fan fic!  Ive tried to do Second Apocalypse fan fic and was just too intimidated to begin.  The universe is almost too well mapped out.  I feel like anything I do would have inconsistencies with the already established story.  'Untitled' on the other hand fits into the universe perfectly!

The White-Luck Warrior / Re: Side Effects of Eating Sranc
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:23:11 pm »
At what point in the journey is this? IIRC I chalked that up to people, lots of people, surrendering their rations to him.. but I don't remember when that scene took place. Also, its possible Esmi was both delusional from malnutrition deluded by Kellhus' "greatness".

But he would not be above eating people... gross. Maybe eating people has strange metaphysical side effects.

Violation of the second law!

Hey if it means everybody in the GO is now immortal, everybody wins.  Except the Consult, and the sranc.  Those poor sranc.  They thought they had it bad before?

I like Abercrombie's books.

Forgot which page it was on, but the guy who said, 'men who fuck sranc' made me LOL in real life.  Good stuff :)

General Earwa / Re: Bakker and Feminism
« on: December 29, 2014, 06:47:08 pm »
I dont find his treatment of women sexist at all.  Feminists want to paint a picture of ladies being tough and in charge but guess what, this is a medieval type setting.  Id love to see those feminists show me how equal women were in medieval Europe (or modern day Islam).  That doesn't mean women weren't intelligent or ambitious or strong.  But most men in that type of a society would have taken a women like that to be shrewish at best, and it can get a lot more ugly than that.  And guess how a woman like that gets 'cured' in that type of culture/society?

I think Esmi is a perfect example.  Smart as hell, but what other options did she have?  You think she can just go and apply for a decent job in that type of world?

Feminazis and their revisionist history are so ridiculous.

Psuke requires emotion, but we know not which ones. Its possible that Kell's un-dunyain-ness (his madness), might make him able to use it. I still, however, think that the Psuke has been lost.

It might be that Kellhus has already derived the Tekne, leaping forward thousands of years of technological advancements in his probability trance. However, he would have no real means to achieve this level to technology. The vast mining operations that would be required to produce more advanced tech would alone prevent him for achieve much in his own lifetime.

The Arc provides him with a means to achieve much. He can skip over mental/theoretical barriers, but the Arc allows him to potentially circumvent both physical and time barriers as well. Imagine, suddenly having enough anti-matter to fuel a matter/anti-matter reaction, and the reactor itself, to have an endless supply of energy for forever. Stockpiles of rare elements in quantity and quality that would take decades, if not centuries, to mine and purify.

What about Meppa, he has the Psuke?  Ive read the theories about him being a plant that Kellhus actually placed and really liked that idea, but if that is the case obviously Kellhus had to teach him the Psuke.  Or if Meppa alerady knew it, what would keep him from teaching it to other sorcerers?  I imagine there would be strong interest in it.  I thought it was pretty clear from the first 3 books that the Psuke > Anagogic sorcery so I imagine the Saik, the Spires, the Mysunsai, the Vokalati, the Zeumi school (forgot the name) and any minor school not big enough to mention would love to expand their power.  Kellhus could just compel Meppa if Meppa wasn't secretly already an agent of his.

I was thinking it would be around the middle of Tokugawa Japan.  They would be a group of underground Christians who fled around 1700 when they were infiltrated and discovered.  This would mean they had successfully hidden for about a century before getting infiltrated/discovered and as a preemptive measure, the guys in charge had a plan to take some ships (fluyts were perfectly sea worthy and common in Japan by that time) and flee to Americas to seek sanctuary with the Spanish. However, they were run aground during a typhoon and have been stuck on the island ever since.

Is seeking refuge with the Spaniards pretty silly with what we know about how those guys operated?  No question lol.  But these guys only knew the propaganda they had heard from the missionaries over a century previous.

I could also make a trip to Dallas or Austin, TX as I love both of those cities and have in-laws nearby (that I could use as an excuse for the trip with the wife)

I want the island to be an English colony/territory. The Spanish owned (if you want to call them calling dibs on a map with almost none of their people, ownership) the western US so California is not suitable for what I want to do.  I want it to be English because I want to focus on the island being in effect forgotten because of the Revolutionary War.  And part of me wants the freedom to invent a new little nation.

I actually have toyed with the idea of the Spanish trying to conquer the colony while the Brits are busy in the 13 colonies.  So yes, lots of tension between the European powers.  If I got a third nation/empire involved it would be the Dutch as they were pretty big traders in the orient back in the day, and they were the only nation allowed to trade with the Japanese for like 200 years.

I haven't decided on the type of indigenous population I want on the island, either polynesian islanders or like American indians.  I do know that I want a small Japanese colony already established but I haven't thought of a suitable reason for them being there yet.  Maybe Christians refugees fleeing after the Shoguns tried to crack down on western influences which were encroaching on Japanese culture?  Id love to make them pirates but I dont imagine many pirate ships would take enough women with them.  I do know that I want them to have a much smaller presence on the island (compared to the indigenous people) as their colony was only started less than a century before the English arrived and they had no additional influx of immigrants from the homeland.

And revenge.  Yes I just think its such an interesting concept to work with.  Right now the backstory I am working with is my protagonist (Ill shorten to PRO) is the son of an english sailor and spanish farm girl the sailor met and fell in love with after being shipwrecked near spain.  they marry but are unpopular as he is not catholic and for his being English.  PRO is born and dad goes back to being a sailor to take care of the family.  When PRO is about 10, mother dies and the landlord steals everything the family owns and kicks PRO on the street.  When dad gets home he becomes furious and kills the landlords family, minus his son, so he can see what it feels like.  He immediately regrets this and is ashamed, but knows that PRO will suffer more if he does the right thing so he resolves to do whatever it takes to keep his son- our PRO- safe.  (This will all be revealed slowly in multiple flashbacks throughout the story).  So they rush to France (they are in Bilbao, in NW part of Spain so not far from French border) and from France they jump on a ship trying to put this ugly thing behind them.  The landlord and his son have not forgotten or forgiven.

The story will take place about 12 years after all that ended with PRO and dad living in the island. PRO is just enjoying young life, when the landlord finally finds them.  This is as far as I am right now.

Sorry if my response to questions here isn't in any logical order lol.  Im sleepy

Its where your magic comes from, duh

Im imagining all the cool stuff that can go into your wand in the Harry Potter universe   ::)

Seriously though, I think the guys here have already nailed it. Its the 6th sense/laws of nature/science that you alter/have to follow when creating sorcery.  Very logic based which is why Kellhus can kick so much more ass than anybody else.

Personally, I wonder how strong Kellhus would be with the Psuke.  I know Moengus was weak with it, but he didn't have Kellhus' 'madness' (actually believing that the God speaks to him could have created some pretty strong emotions).  On the other hand, hes incapable of love even for Esmi or his kids so IDK.

I also wonder if Kellhus could learn Tekne as it is derived by science, which follows rules of logic which Kellhus could easily master.  What if he could breed his own type of Sranc that defend humans instead?  Mans best friend 2.0, with swords!

General Earwa / Re: What If...
« on: December 29, 2014, 09:07:21 am »
what if Kellhus is just the latest installment of a Dunyain tradition: send an Anasurimbor into the wild every 30ish years telling him only that his father has gone before him

it would be cool if we meet a son/daughter of kellhus from ishual!

It does seem a little odd that being the prodigy that Kellhus is, (even by Dunyain standards) they wouldn't have used him to stud and make lots more.  I mean haven't they been 'training and breeding in the mountains for thousands of years'?

What if Kellhus hadn't survived his initial encounter with sorcery?  It seems like anybody else without a trinket is toast so super speed or not, you cant out run magic...

What if Akka and Mimara's baby is a girl, having ingested so much qirri in the womb it becomes a female Nonman (nonwoman?) ???  Could that potentially alter the fate/objectives of all the nonmen?  Or maybe as a race they would survive, but all the currently living nonmen are already erratics/beyond saving and cant be trusted around the only female (besides for insemination) and once a few new nonmen are here, the ancients can be safely disposed of.

What if Kellhus faked the destruction of Ishual and secretly evacuated the Dunyain to a new hidden fortress somewhere in the south, much further from the Consult which is now actively looking for them with several good leads.

What if the 100 finally materialize in Earwa and battle Kellhus- and Kellhus wins.  Would the White Luck Warrior still be after Kellhus?  Would he even be able to win without support from Yatwer?  I dont know if its ever mentioned how he forsees stuff, just that he does.

What if Akka had never gone to the Library?  Then Kellhus would have never had sex with Esmi and  Cnaiur only betrayed Kellhus with the understanding that they would chain him to his wife. Cnaiur assumed it would be Esmi and was shocked when they used Serwa lol.

What if Cnaiur had been King of Tribes at Kiyuth?  Would the Nansurium have been destroyed or would the Men of the Tusk in Momemn have been enough to fight them off (although they would have had to give up all hope of taking Shimeh)

What if Zeum could have been incorporated into the Empire before the march of the Great Ordeal?  Who knows how many schools (or if theres just one school, how large it is) and how many fighting men they could have contributed?  What about the lands men inhabited east of the Kayarsus mountains before they arrived in Earwa?  I imagine they felt Mog 2k years ago too, why wasn't there any mention of them ever sending help?

What if Kellhus can kill/control all of the aspects of the 100 and he can thus control damnation?  Would the consult go quietly if Kellhus could guarantee them they wouldn't burn for eternity?

What if Scott was able to crank out 1 or even 2 books a year and still maintain the quality we have all come to expect????

Writing / Work in Progress
« on: December 28, 2014, 07:22:25 am »
Im writing an alternate history story set in the 1770s on a fictional landmass west of California.  The colony doesn't join the American Revolution but it also gets largely ignored by the Brits as they focus so much of their resources on the Americans and thus has to become more independent.

I originally wanted to have the story focus on how my characters survive but as Ive been writing the story has mutated into more of a revenge tale where the protagonist is forced to defend himself from a man wanting revenge for things the protagonists father did to him before emigrating to the colony.

I honestly have no idea where it will go.  Ill update this eventually after I finish a rough draft.
