General Earwa / Re: Who is your favourite character and why ??
« on: May 23, 2016, 12:46:47 am »
Cnaiur urs Skiotha, the Most Violent of All Men. Who'd have thought such a touching and sometimes horrifying personal story would come from a barbarian chief archetype. Cleric is pretty awesome too.

Cnaiur is my favorite too.  Maybe its the nonconformist in me but I loved and totally related with how Cnaiur always felt outside even when being right at the heart of everything Scylvendi (in his rold as the Chief).  I often have felt that way at church, in the Army, in high school...etc.

And you know, hes a brilliant badass with some of the best speeches and quotes of any series Ive ever come across.  So theres that

General Earwa / Emwama
« on: May 22, 2016, 11:57:46 pm »
So, the Emwama were the slaves of the nonmen and were all eradicated with the nonmen when the four tribes took over Earwa.  But...  Is it possible there are still some Emwama alive and enslaved in Isterebinth?

That would explain why it is located in the Ark itself.

Quick crackpot, mostly in tune with Bakker's nods to Tolkien.

Heron spear? Narsil. (i'm making a charge, lol)
Skin-spies and IF relations? Smeagorl and The One Ring.

ps Kellhus as Frodo? Oh, I like it. I really like it.

Kellhus as Frodo?

So whose Sam and Gollum?   :P

That's a good point.  However you'd think that knowing what they know about sranc they'd focus their resources on having less outposts and seriously fortifying those they do keep.  Just imagine being given orders to report to some outpost right on the border lol.  I'd rather go back to Afghanistan than possibly (or almost surely) get raped/eaten/killed by sranc

It could just be that Atrithau, just like every other human city, survives simply because the sranc have not be wielded en mass since the First Apocalypse. Sure they like to kill/eat/rape humans, but there isn't a big enough driver to band together and assault a fortress/city. At this point, if the Consult found some need to destroy a city, especially Atrithau, it probably could figure it out, but to what end? AFAIK, there is nothing interesting there, not even the Mandate proselytizing against the Consult on street corners. In the grand scheme, cities are nothing, especially when they are heavily infiltrated by skin-spies and the like.

I think this is pretty much the reason.  Sranc alone, even in numbers, aren't a good match against a walled city.  While they do seem to have the facility to craft basic arms, I couldn't imagine them mounting a siege without the help of Bashrag, Wracu or sorcery.

Beyond that, since the FA, the Consult seems to have taken great pains to avoid a direct confrontation that might incite the world of Men to unite against them.  Their greatest weapon, on the other hand, seems to have been pitting Men against each other.

It's strange that the No-God let both Sakarpus (spared) and Atrithau (survived) stand during the FA.  And it seems like those cities' respective sorcery countermeasures must be involved somehow!

In Sorweels chapters we hear that every year at least one outpost is overrun by Sranc and thats WAY further south (the further south you go the less sranc).  So I find it hard to believe the Sranc couldn't take the city without sorcerous help.  I think the Consult intentionally keeps Sranc away from Atrithau for some reason.

Now obviously, the hinge of my argument is how fortified are Sakarpus' outposts.  And I have no idea what the answer to that is

They also get upset about how many Bakker threads end up on the first page...we can usually get away with 2, but sometimes not...
Lol thats funny.  Damn GRRM fans and their 'gritty fantasy'  :-[

General Earwa / atrithau
« on: July 01, 2015, 07:50:48 am »
So I have been wondering why the millions upon millions of sranc have never destroyed atrithau.  It just seems strange to me.  I know that atrithau is an arcane ground but if anything you'd think that would work against them- as the sranc will always win in pure numbers games (ok not always but almost).

The more I think about it the more I wonder if the Consult wanted some humans nearby to survive.  Maybe to provide them with slaves or rape victims or just to play with in other ways.  What do you guys think?

General Earwa / Re: Bakker and Feminism
« on: May 22, 2015, 08:09:13 am »
Its definitely a big part of the entire anti-genre thing that he always goes for. It kind of points to the irrelevance of what the book actually contains, because people will just assign it certain themes/ideas in their minds. After all, with so many words, you can cherry-pick anything you want out of it and find something to back it up. Thus, all the crazy crackpot theories we are left with, waiting for the rest of the books...

If it wasn't for all the crazy crackpot theories, I doubt I would have ever gotten an account here.  But DAMN do you guys get some wild but fascinating ideas and discussions in here!!! They are much appreciated by us, the less creatives lol

Feminazis and their revisionist history are so ridiculous.

If feminists are 'feminazis' does that make you a 'man-jew'? If so, good luck with that!

Feminists want to paint a picture of ladies being tough and in charge but guess what, this is a medieval type setting.

Yeah, thanks, I get that. Although it seems a little bit weird that the books are filled with aliens and magicians and demons and gods, but treatment of women MUST be historically accurate, or that would ruin the realism.

Putting that aside, it is possible - and many, many other writers have done this, GRRM being the most notable - to write fantasy in a medieval setting without being super-creepy about it. Like, not specifically structuring the metaphysics of your world to make females literally inferior, not making almost every female character a whore, and not raping and degrading them over and over again.

This stuff has a long history in fantasy writing - I suspect one of Bakker's main influences are the Gor books - and that's mostly for commercial reasons: lots of guys like reading books in which women are raped and beaten. But pretending that these pornographic elements are historical realism, or whatever - is pretty silly.

You have a problem with Jews?  Oh I forgot, now that Muslims are the popular 'oppressed group' its ok to hate on Jews.

and umm maybe you haven't noticed, but GRRM's writing started out fantastic (theres no debate) but started to lose steam at the end of book 2 and the last 2 books straight up sucked balls.  And FYI, Dany has become a stereotypical woman who can't make up her mind, makes emotional (instead of logical) decisions, sleeps with her lieutenants...etc.  So there is that.

I think it would be a waste of manpower to train the College of Luthymae as assassins when they are perfectly capable of being full fledged sorcerers now.  The only type of troop that seems to be trained to kill sorcerers are chorae bowmen and Acha demonstrated in Iothiah how easily they can be dispatched by a sorcerer who pays attention to where the chorae are around him.  You cant burn them directly but you can pull walls down on them or collapse the floor/ground underneath them, all while keeping them out of your line of sight!

Kind of unrelated and trivial but do we know what the average lifespan of nonmen was before the womb plague made them all immortal?
