I was stationed in Texas but now Im out of the Army and back in southern California.  With a LOOOONG heads up I might be willing/able to take a vacation somewhere but the odds aren't good.  If anything ever happens in California or as far east as Las Vegas or Phoenix I would gladly pay a visit.  Further than that though is just too long a drive for a broke college student.

News/Announcements / Re: Forum Ranks
« on: October 21, 2014, 04:49:27 pm »
Not that the current system needs to be replaced, I actually like the current ranks but I felt I had to contribute something.

Vulgar Rabble  (0)
Man of the Tusk  (25)
Shrial Knight  (75)
Eothic Guard  (150)
Hundred Pillars  (250)
Faceless One  (500)

I know this list isn't exactly logical since skin spies aren't on the same side but I decided to just do it based on 'ability to kick ass in combat'.  I also tried to avoid troop types specific to one nation, but my guess is the Nansur (Ketyai) will be the most widely represented in the Shrial Knights but since all of the Eothic Guard in TAE are Norsirai I felt that balanced them out.

**If I have remembered anything incorrectly, please let me know but dont make me feel too dumb lol   :P

Penguin dropped me (opting to distribute Overlook’s edition instead) before WLW came out, so that’s very old news – older than the blog, in fact! All I’ve said is that I can die happily, with AE complete, since it finishes the story arc I’ve been sitting on since a punk. Writing the last series depends on how whether anyone gives me money to buy food while I write the last series. If no one does, which is always possible in the biz, then I’ll have to get a straight-job, and it’ll just take that much longer for it to come out. I’m actually in a quite enviable position, self-publishing-wise.

So tell them that if they want to be right in the short term, keep scaring people away from the series! ;) Otherwise, I never stop writing. It’s just something I always do. I… can’t… seem… to… stop… writing…

I was referring to AE, in that comment, btw. If it doesn’t convince people that something quite different is going on, nothing will.

That said, I really don’t blame people for losing faith. But I haven’t, and since I live nearest the monster, I know exactly how alive it is.

Stay strong!  I actually have 2 copies of Prince of Nothing because Ive reread the first one so many times.  Eventually Ill have to buy more copies of all the others.  That should cover at least one box of cereal lol

You're probably right.  Damnit Scott put some singing dwarves, fair elf maidens or schools of witchcraft and wizardry in the books and then you would have to fight through armies of fans to get to the book stores!

But then it wouldn't be the same awesome series I know and love...  I can wait though.  Hopefully in a few years the series will have gained more attention and popularity and some type of meeting might be possible.

Does Bakker usually do tours when he releases books?  I got to see GRRM when book 5 came out (total disappointment) and had him sign my old kindle case with a sharpie lol.  Id be willing to drive quite a ways for to let my nerdy inner fanboy get an autograph and a pic with Kellhus I mean Scott    :-[

I'd argue that they're most of the way towards being a new hominid species actually. They demonstrate more genetic incompatibility with Homo sapiens than a lot of other organisms considered separate species show for each other.

You are referring to all of Kellhus' other... attempted baby mommas who all died/failed to produce offspring?

yeah, geoint, it's a lot to read!

I don't think we really know much about damnation at all.  For all I know, some sorcerers may be stained but not damned and of course your average Joe is going to be unstained and damned.  That's such a big mystery, I expect we'll hear some about it in TUC but he might hold a lot of that secret for the very last Earwan book.

I like where you're going with with anagogic/gnostic to cishaurim.  Are you thinking about Iyokus?  He's a bundle of secrets, got to be.  Blindness + Titirga does cool stuff, so you know Iyokus is going to do something sweet, prolly at Dagliash.  Maybe he'll be the one anagogic sorcerer able to raise the anagogis to Mandate level sorcery.

I dont remember what Titirga is.

I hadn't really thought about Iyokus.  I know hes still alive, the new grandmaster of the SS and that he taught Kellhus the Daimos.  Other than that, I hadn't really assumed he would come into play much.  I guess I kinda assumed that only the mandate (not the entire army) would make it all the way to the arc.  Silly and totally unfair to everybody else participating I know lol, but I just assumed they were all meant to be pawns to be sacrificed to get Kellhus and his most useful sorcerers all the way there.

Heres another random thought; I really wonder about damnation in the bakker universe.  I remember the college of Luthymae (spelling?) were those with the gift who chose to serve the gods instead.  Now though, with Kellhus reversing the stigma about sorcery I imagine the college would be absorbed into the schools.  I wonder what those new sorcerers will think when they die and are in hell or whatever because Kellhus convinced them sorcery was ok lol.

I just finished a reread of the first series I and I have to say that I found the Cishaurim to be more interesting this time around. Notably in the raw power that they yield. The Scarlet Spires thought them to be less powerful than Anagogic Schools but the battle for Shimeh proved that to be otherwise and I totally forgot about the way that they assassinated the former Grandmaster of the Scarlet Spires.

With that said, I am surprised that the Probability Trance did not show Kellhus a way to implement them in TTT. More maybe it did but was not beneficial? I understand that there was no way to keep them alive being that they were the priests of a heretic religion, but the fact that their sorcery was markless is something that captivates me.

We know that some gods at least war against Kellhus, yet the Cishaurim bare no mark and it was never stated that the gods were blind to them as they are to the no god. Yet they were not actively against them, even though they took away many of their followers. Does they attest to the rightness of Fanim? If so, what does it mean now that it is gone. Thoughts?

I had never considered that the cishaurim might be right because I was so sure that all sorcerers were damned, but that is a very interesting perspective.

I have nothing useful to add except a few questions that popped into my head lol.

Are the Cishaurim even damned?  (sorry if this is already discussed here, Im too sleepy to read 7 pages)

Can an anagogic or gnostic sorcerer that is damned/has the mark become cishaurim and if so, does it effect his mark?

Wilshire - Any theories on why Kellhus would be behind Meppa?  That's the hangup for me.  I don't know what the goal would be.

We don't have a ton of evidence, but wouldn't the Cishaurim be feared and hated in the New Empire?

Well my personal favorite crackpot is that Meppa is Moenghus' doing, but since you asked lets see...

Why would Kellhus be behind Meppa?
Kellhus obviously knew, or knew there was a good chance, that the empire was going to fall when he left. He took pretty much every able bodied man to the North, leaving a huge power vacuum. He was never able to catch Fanyal, so he was likely so swoop in when the powers that be were all elsewhere. We know that Kellhus can erase memories via the Whelming, maybe he doesn't so much erase them, but covers them up so that they are inaccessible to their owner.

So given all of that, Kellhus knew that Fanyal would leap at the opportunity to have a powerful ally - especially one that was a symbol of his peoples' former glory. Kellhus figured out how to teach the water-baring technique to one of his blind disciples (or blinded one of them and then taught them, whatever). He then erased this person's memories, and sent them off to find his enemies.
After Meppa, almost single-handily, takes over the empire, Kellhus can come back and give him his memories back (or maybe some trigger was placed in his mind so that once something specific happens his memories flood back). At the end of the day, only the face of the ruler changed,. Fanayal will be ousted as the face of destruction, but Meppa will be spared since he was basically under Kellhus' orders.

Uh so why go through all this? Kellhus couldn't find or stop the bandit for whatever reason. Maybe he wants him to take over his empire while he is away. Could be that he wanted to know if he was being helped by one of the Hundred, so he couldn't send a regular spy. He needed someone who looked like an enemy to the Aspect-Emperor, even to 'divine' scrutiny. What better person then the last scion of a cult he personally destroyed? To all the world and the Outside Meppa looks normal, but to Kellhus he is simply another set of 'eyes'.
Also, Kellhus is pretty sure he killed all the Cish, but how sure is he? Meppa could be a beacon for any wayward Psukari, and once they are all gathered, they can all be destroyed.

...
Any questions? lol.

my mind is totally blown right now.

Is it ever mentioned that kellhus taught somebody the psuke?

General Misc. / Re: Worldwide Life Hacks
« on: July 06, 2014, 07:04:13 am »
Not sure if this qualifies as a 'life hack', but I used to have absolutely zero confidence with girls.  In my desperation I turned to the 'pick up artist' phenomenon to see if I could learn anything to help.

Honestly, if you read just a few of the books out there, like Mystery Method or The Game, you should pick up everything you need.  Dont spend $$$$ on seminars or 'coaches'.  I got pretty good at talking to girls, but I still had the terrible phobia of opening, or initiating contact.  Once the first 'Hi' was uttered, everything was easy but it was getting that first 'hi' that killed me because I always feared rejection.

A few years went by and I discovered online dating.  POF, Myyearbook, okcupid...etc.  All free and casual sites where you can message girls (or guys) and if they reply, that 'hi' was out of the way and jackpot.

A few tips though:
Always make girls skype with you before you go on a date.  Best way to find out if shes super fat or hairyor has a unibrow or is secretly a dude...etc.

Get used to phone calls.  Lots of guys dont enjoy long conversations with girls because gossip inevitably comes up.  Develop a taste for it (but keep it classy) or you will come off as boring.

Dont pretend to like stuff you dont just to win points.  It backfires horribly (if youre just in it for a one night stand this isnt an issue but for real relationships, just be honest).  If you pretend youre too cool to game and she finds your bedroom is covered in D&D posters, you start to look dishonest.  Its 2014, lots of people are way more... understanding of geek/nerd culture than you know.

First few dates should be super casual.  My first two dates ever were movie nights where we met at the movies.  Terrible idea.  In a movie you are stuck in a chair with nothing to do but sit quietly and that can get awkward if you aren't already comfortable and somewhat intimate with your date.  Instead, window shopping at the mall while joking around in shops like hot topic and spencers can be very fun.  It also is very public so everybody feels safe.  Its free to walk around.  And you can gauge their interest as they see things.  More than once I had what looked like uptight preppy girls drag me into Victorias Secret and offer to try things on.   ;D

Im sure most of the people on the forum dont need this advice, but Im sure there are a few guys that are in my old, lonely shoes.  I hope you guys use this and find some happiness.

Im now happily married to a smokin hot Texas girl who makes more money than I do and we have a beautiful little girl (and more on the way).  Life is good.  Dont settle for less.

I've worked at many different restaurants, cooked a variety of styles, and under some fantastic cooks/chefs (relative to the places I've lived).

I'm semi-addicted to the rush of being involved/leading a functional service (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). I could care less for being personally creative in a culinary way - though I love helping someone else manifest their vision - but considering before I started in the industry almost ten years ago, I couldn't microwave a can of beans, the requisite knowledge has been satisfying.

But it's strictly a waste of my time.

And unfortunately, bar certain situations with academics, people of Bakker fandom, and, most of all, books, I feel intellectually alone in life, let alone work. Thankfully, I grew up with a group of friends who gave me a cutting wit so I can hold my own with the worst of the worst of kitchen humour.

You're not alone buddy.  Ive been stuck working with idiots my entire time in the Army.  I mean that too. Anybody with half a brain gets out and does contracting after their contract is up.  Only idiots stay in because either they can't make their own decisions or they chose a stupid job to do in the military and they realized there is no civilian equivalent.

One must begin at the beginning. TSA must be followed sequentially or you lose everything that makes it great. Everything has been meticulously crafted, and if you start in the middle you might as well not have started at all... imo.

I have to agree.  If you read just a few chapters in TSA, there are sooo many spoilers that the entire first trilogy will be severely weakened.

I also do agree that book 1 is hard to get into because it starts you off with so many different things happening at once, and a casual reader might not be interested/invested enough yet to care and might just give up.  All we can do about that is promise them its like Game of Thrones and to be patient.

General Earwa / Re: Incu-Holoinas - Is it a large Ciphrang?
« on: July 02, 2014, 11:37:34 pm »
I never considered the possibility of the ark as a Ciphrang.  I know it was a 'womb' but I had never wondered what kind.  Or rather, I had never labeled it as a specific species.  Obviously, it is deeply connected to all of the Inchoroi, but that it was a particular type is intriguing.  In the past, I kind of imagined it as more of a large biological 'factory' that produced something along the lines of stemcells that were then manipulated with the tekne to create whatever was needed.

I guess it could itself be a Ciphrang though.  Ill try to remember to pay more attention to parts when the Ark is mentioned in my next read through.  I like this thread
