Cannibal Holocaust is a classic snuff horror film from decades back. Actors legitimately thought the director was going to murder them. Bakker and his wife would love it, if they haven't seen it yet.

And everything's better with sodomy, of course.

I was honestly disappointed by Cannibal Holocaust. It wasn't nearly as extreme as I'd imagined it. Sweet theme though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf1Vt6r-sj8
I watched it with my old roommate and her boyfriend at the time. I'm not a huge fan of snuff horror in general, too desensitized to care about the gore and not sadistic enough to revel in it. Give me psychological dread and existential doubt over blood and guts any day.

(This was an accidental double post from my phone, please disregard and carry on. All is well. We have always been at war with Eastasia.)

(why do the murder monsters have to be rape monsters as well?).

Sorry to tangent but Bakker's talked about this one a couple times before. In his mind, the most indigestible horror of modern society seems to be the serial killing rapist.
Ah. Within the confines of the setting it makes sense due to the Inchoroi tendency toward the worst aspects of violent maleness. I was just offering an example toward that (and their general lack of pursuit of cold efficacy), not criticizing the authorial decision.

All male, for the reasons pointed out above by MSJ and Duskweaver.

It's woefully less efficient than having female versions as well, but the Inchoroi are consistently inefficient in their aims (why weapon races instead of a super-plague?), and driven always by a stereotypical male sexual aggressiveness (why do the murder monsters have to be rape monsters as well?).

News/Announcements / Re: How grimdark is TDTCB?
« on: August 25, 2017, 11:44:01 pm »
I submit that this is a log scale, the curve is exponential, order of magnitude more grimdarky between each full point.

ie. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ratings equal 1, 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 grimdark units...

"Grimdark units" will now be my metric for measurement of all things, literary and otherwise.

There's an old saying is U.S. politics: "Democrats fall in love; Republicans fall in line." I firmly believe Sanders would have won the general election, as the Trump win basically came from working class voters straying from the Democratic flock (due to tepid opinions of Clinton in many cases), and low turnout by young/unaligned/idealistic voters who would typically lean Democratic, again, due to a lack of excitement for Clinton. It also allowed Trump to gain most of the "I just want a CHANGE!" votes that didn't go third party, where Sanders was far enough removed from Democratic middle ground to gain some of those votes.

You alienate a small margin in the swing states, you lose the election.

TaoHorror, the basic problem with any proposed or actual system is human weakness and the corrupting nature of power (or tendency of power to attract the already corrupt). Totalitarian communism would be great if people were capable of objectively and skillfully managing all the minutiae involved. They just aren't. Democracy/representative republics would be great if people actually made informed decisions and had the time or mental capacity to analyze all relevant data and make a truly informed decision divorced from emotion or bias. They just don't.

I don't have an answer for what would be superior. Humans will fuck up whatever sounds nice on paper. Even if we hand it over to the computer overlords, some human shortcut in the programming of the AI they evolved from will have them fucking up the show just as badly as we have so far.

I do recognize that there are several significant subversions of fantasy tropes, but not "every."  (This is not as much a criticism of Bakker's work as a criticism of the hyperbole surrounding it.)  This applies to his "Epic Fantasy Grand Finale," too, since TUC isn't the end.  Every series has reversals of fortune.  If you'd stopped reading after Morgoth stole the Silmarils, you could say the same thing about Tolkien.  So we don't have enough information yet to determine if this is actually as subversive as you're claiming.

Fair enough. It feels like the ending, and was the intended one at some point (though I'm assuming certain details about the World, its metaphysics, etc. would have been made clearer by this point if it had remained the final installment. And, yes, I am perhaps a touch hyperbolic in my praise at times, though I do still contend he takes at least most of the most overutilized tropes (the wise old sage, the unknowing descendant of kings and heroes coming from a secluded existence to save the world, the noble savage, etc.) and runs circles around them.

Quote
I didn't feel the splitting of two novels as much for TUC as for TGO.  The episodic feeling of the latter can't be a criticism of the former, since it's the finale.  It would have ended at the same place regardless (I assume) and thus suffered exactly the criticisms being levied now.

You just said it wasn't the finale. Make up your damn mind! ;)

My criticism of the separation into two volumes was aimed at the book as a whole, not so much the ending itself (which, yes, would be unaltered whether it was one volume or thirteen). Oft-criticized segments such as the Great Ordeal's Cannibal Sodomy Holocaust, I think, would carry more weight were the descent into madness not so seemingly sudden as the carving into two novels makes it feel in the absence of a re-read immediately prior.

Whether or not it's his "flaw," he does think some of his readers are even cleverer than he is (not me, by the way)...

The problem therein is his self-deprecating nature: he thinks he's less smart than he is and that he's more average than he is.

It's often remarked on how idiots are blind to their own stupidity, but few notice how the intelligent are often equally blind to their intellect, and the issues this can cause when dealing with others.

The only people who aren't damned are Mimara and Esme.  Who aside from looking alike, are both former prostitutes.  I'm not too familiar with Mary Magdalene's story.  Was her former occupation significant?

Perhaps I misread or misinterpreted it, but wasn't one warrior of the Ordeal saved toward the end? He died and was carried into the arms of Gilgaol or some such.

So an unnamed kind, lose in a semi-tame, semi-wild setting?

The Crabiqid is Bakker's Blood Meridian.  He will meet Sarl (as the Judge).  Or didn't Bakker say that Kosoter isn't done yet?  Then he is the Judge.

If this isn't how it actually plays out, I vote we crowdfund Bakker writing this as an alternate story.

I honestly wouldn't mind Crabbicus not interacting too heavily with the Second Apocalypse proper, as it were, or not being super heavily involved. I always think the Dunyain sections were especially interesting to read and really liked The Survivor's stuff (whose name I can't remember). As long as his intents aren't like a certain other semi-Dunyain child then I think it'll be an interesting read.

It would be interesting to see an intellect that profound, but untrained and not set down the predetermined Dunyain course, take stock of the world as-is and begin to make alterations as able. What motivates a Dunyain not trained toward domination and mastery of circumstance?

Sorry for butting in with my two cents here...

It's all too easy, especially when discussing politics, to rely on a pre-established narrative shorthand in dealing with other people doing their best to summarize complicated views in an imperfect medium. I'm guilty of this myself; MSJ, I had you pegged as a Trump supporter/Bush guy/hater of Obama/etc., largely because the views you've expressed in the thread we've argued in don't easily fit into my preexisting mental image of a Trump critic/Obama voter/liberal/whatever. Obviously, people are more complex than simple mental shortcuts can convey adequately, but it was all too easy on my end to fall into the trap of "vocal patriotism + support for the Iraq war = Republican = image already formed in my mind regardless of the situation's reality." Same on tleilaxu's end, I would assume.

As to his comments, they were quite obviously a caricature of Americans-as-viewed-by-Europeans to me; but I traffic highly in countercultural and anti-American sentiment, so my mind already possessed the cognitive detours necessary to see the statement as intended. America's liberal party is well to the right of most European nations' centrist platform, we're renowned for our cultural arrogance worldwide, we lead the world in obesity and overindulgence, we love our guns, and even as a die-hard patriot you have to admit we've had a bit of an issue with race and police brutality in our distant past recent past last Thursday right now. I doubt he intended any direct accusation of racism against you; but again, all too easy to fall into that mental shorthand, and assume the American making American statements is the strawman American fitting the negative stereotypes established, reinforced and exaggerated.

Welcome to non-lurkerhood! ;) I might be mistaken, but I think I recognize your username from the TV Tropes Second Apocalypse page.

I believe I made one drunken attempt at an edit one evening, realized I had no idea whatsoever what I was doing, and bowed out before causing too much harm.

Welcome again to the Second Apocalypse, soliptisticurge (which I tripped over with my tongue a number of times recently referencing some of your posts).

My posts are drawing the attention of the mods. All is going according to plan. Now for Phase Seven...

Its more a question of, what does the world agree is right and what does it/"we" justify as wrong. Or at least, a majority of people?

Why do we we fundamentally concern ourselves with what's agreed? Most people are idiots. ;)

All morality is subjective. Democratically elected morality isn't more objectively true, just more popular. We give the people's/world's consensus weight because we, the products of some form of democracy or another, are conditioned to find merit in that which adheres to the system we are ensconced in.
