Kronos Quartet.

See while I appreciate an artist's pedigree, it doesn't necessarily indicate anything more than a flavour of what they might bring creatively to a novel project like PON.

So you're saying that movies about a series of books featuring, among others, a strong theme of the deceptive and produced nature of our static forms, memes perhaps, within culture and society should reflect the proper cultural or social period and shouldn't push those boundaries...? Say... what o.O?

+1 on all these links. Making for some wicked listening.

Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet isn't a bad idea for a hypothetical TSA soundtrack.

IIRC, Bakker has some links on his blog to the music he listens to while writing fantasy. It's mostly ambient stuff, from the little I heard.

Something about this song has always made me think something similar would be appropriate for the Cil-Aujas scenes (the lead up to the battle I mean, which should be suitably long a tension-filled):

the medieval  realist/nihilist film Marketa Lazarova (about the tension and warring between christian and pagan clans in the 11 century mid Europe) is not only a perfect stylistic approach (meaning it eschews the romanticism of most medieval portrayals, or the neo-romanticism of LotR or GoT visuals) for Earwa, but the the score is a fucking masterpiece in and of itself, and is what I would probably use to temp track the TV show of TSA. :-p

This is a collection of samples of the various tracks, the first twenty seconds of this are eh, but it really fucking kicks your ass with the third selection, starting at about 48 seconds in.

That's pretty damn badass locke. Definitely has a distinct feel to it, which any score for a TSA adaptation would require.

Here's one: Imagine this throughout the entire epilogue of TWP. Harrowing as fuck, especially if the actual sound effects were very muted:

Another one I think fits in a weird way tonally is the soundtrack to The Proposition (one of my favorite movies ever), by Nick Cave.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7ZxXkHdJhI&list=ALBTKoXRg38BBDc3nkplAn0FsSukddVuNv

I'm actually a fan of intermixing a very slight modern flourish to it, like some simple guitar. Not to the entire soundtrack, but just bits and pieces for color. It can work very well if done subtly and with taste (see Valhalla Rising).

Another one (in my mind, some good Mongolian throat singing would be essential, dunno why but I've always associated it with Earwa, especially sequences with the Inchoroi or the Outside). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3moI6Hg7hs --- Mainly just that opening though, very dark and atmospheric.

This also gets that otherworldly, epic feeling, but in a more melancholy way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3QlEgnrcdk

The epic fight between Cnaiur and Sarcellus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnZt1H20_Ts&list=PL85C2887D3660C160

Love resurrecting threads. Wicked stuff.

Also, Howard Shore did LOTR so he seems like an obvious choice to include.

I heart video game music, FB. Halo 2 is iconic as is my aforementioned obsession for all things MGS.

Heh, thanks.

Anyways I was going through my playlists and realized that this song from Star Wars Ep. 3 very much reminded me of the Inchoroi (it, too, incorporates a small amount of throat-singing).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_95r0SwPS8

There's no denying that dark, mysterious, broodingly evil sound that comes from that expression (to Western ears, anyway).

Also, obvious as hell, but I honestly can't think of a single song that captures "otherworldly fantasy" as much as this from LOTR:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Y5EzvaybY&list=PL85C2887D3660C160&feature=mh_lolz

It could work so many places, but I always imagine Achamian in TDTCB first arriving at Momemn and seeing the Andiamine Heights in the distance.

The Slog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3j-wqzacos&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690

The Holy War taking form at the end of TDTCB: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7D5Sy8XfJE&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690
It just has that feel of "serious shit is about to go down", and would be so good for a cliffhanger...

Can't believe it took me this long, but tell me the first thirty seconds of this shit ain't some Dunyain OM meditative riff for reaching the Absolute. Can't you just picture a couple hundred of those fuckers in the labyrinth chanting the Logos for aeons on end?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZGZsCMMTE0

Lol - I never really did get the Gregorian chant vibe from the Dunyain but I like it. And Halo 1 soundtrack is also fantastic... honestly, it might have been on par with Halo 2 except Halo 2 got Incubus to do four original tracks; that worked out to me like Pink Floyd and Incubus having a little wee one :D.

Might as well just post that now - and enjoy a sweet half hour of bliss myself.

4 Movements of the Odyssey by Incubus for Halo
The Existential Scream
Weaponizing the Warrior Pose - Declare War Inwardly
carnificibus: multus sanguis fluit
Die Better
The Theory-Killer

Lol, maybe it's just me then. Thanks for posting that Incubus piece though, totally forgot about it and it's badass as hell.

I listened to this all the time while I was reading LOTR way back. I think some bits of this rather long song can fit well with Bakker as well.

Buck and co. have pretty much nailed the sound of the series (especially that Proposition track, really ominous and atmospheric), but I've got a very specific sound for Seswatha's plunge into Golgotterath that I think would fit sort of well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WShknpNpHbY -> I think this really captures the hopelessness of trying to find a kidnapped lover in a place as existentially horrific as the Ark. the industrial clanging, the sweeping, almost heavenly synths (?). It really is a beautiful song, but there's a deep horror to it, like the synths are just a skin draped over something rotting and ugly (maybe not as evident if you haven't played Silent Hill 2, but this track plays while you're fighting pyramid-headed monsters that are the manifestation of the protagonist's sexual frustration)
