The Unholy Consult / Re: TUC Official Buys
« on: July 11, 2017, 11:58:58 pm »
Anyone have any luck in the US? Much like thousandfold, I was told today last week...and now they are saying the 25th? I exhibited some Dunyain like patience up until now...but I don't think my skills are strong enough to wait another couple of weeks.  It's taking all my will power not to read threads with spoilers...I fear I will not be able to be strong if I have to wait until the 25th.

Ditto. I'm a bit irritated that it's not available. Hoping it pops up next Tues.

BUT! (And i'm not sure if this is ok) if someone has a way for me to acquire a digital version... now(?) I'm all ears.

No matter what I'm going to keep my preorder and - as usual - I always buy an extra of the series to loan out to anyone I can convince...

I got an .epub from the Australian Kobo store (I'm in Canada) by registering a throw-away email address and paying using Paypal.  It's DRM'ed and I had to bring it into my reader through Adobe, so it wasn't entirely smooth & painless, but it's another way of getting a copy in addition to Amazon.

Sweet :).

A user on Bakkerfans facebook is looking for another way to get the audiobook as apparently audible doesn't have UK rights for the book?

The audiobook (which I bought from Canadian iTunes Store, [it's not up in the UK yet, I checked]) introduces a number of new-to-me pronunciations, which isn't something I expected from someone who narrated the first two books in the series.

Still waiting for the retail HC pre-order to arrive from Chapters... it's apparently arriving on Friday.

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO Spoilers] Explaining Koringhus
« on: July 28, 2016, 02:08:24 am »

Something to add to the thread. I very much wonder if we can use Koringhus' Qirri overdose as analogous to what happens to Kellhus on the Circumfix. On p405 of TGO hardcover, Koringhus seems to have a "dialogue" with his own thoughts very similar to Kellhus' on the Circumfix.

I think so. Being broken and being brought back to belief/faith is big theme in TGO -- I mean, the book ends on it  (and likely teases what will be in TUC with Akka/Kellhus). I'm sure it's deliberate, not only refer to TWP, but also in that the internal dialogue makes what's actually happening more difficult to figure out for the reader.  There are certainly things we are not meant to be able to know, or figure out... even now.

Still disappointed we didn't get more Dunyain perspectives, the Koringhus chapter(s) was/were the only part I felt was rushed.

Also, what the text makes almost obtusely clear is that Koringhus' leap is important. That "the leap was his" matters, for some reason.

...it is, quite literally, a leap of faith after all.

The Judging Eye / Re: Audiobook?

Have to say I've been listening to some samples of the audobook and Kevin Orton's narration is truly excellent.
If I could find these in cd form, I'd have them.

Recorded Books lists CD editions on their site, but it looks like they're intended for purchase by libraries.

Used library copies show up from time to time on ebay:

It also looks like the PON books were (relatively) recently reissued as MP3 cds.

The Judging Eye / Re: Audiobook?

I'm surprised that these works are on audio.  I was thinking the other day how difficult these would be to do in an audio format.  The changes from external to internal dialogue (often italicized in the text) in particular must be difficult.  How does the audio book differentiate these?  I feel like it would work better as an audio play or audio theater with different voices for different characters.  Is it confusing to listen to?

The changes from internal to external dialogue are mostly handled through different cadence, tone, pauses, etc.   It works surprisingly well but does take a little bit of time to get used to.  Might be really confusing for people who haven't read the books before listening to the audio.  Not sure I'd use them to try and introduce people to TSA.

And yes, it's amazing that the audiobooks exist at all, and that it looks like we'll end up with the complete series.

"The Trial broke you."

Maybe Kellhus is special precisely because he broke / became "defective."

He is. And, it all ties into my theory that what moves him more and more is human emotion. It all started when he broke on the Circumfix hanging next to Serwe.

It's a big part of what makes him "more", IMO.

TGO ARC Discussion / Re: TGO ARC Cast

I'm interested in participating.  Fairly busy next week, so  might not be able to make it, but we'll see.

For me, it's mostly about coming late to the discussion -- lots of questions answered in other threads, lots of similar speculation, also.

I've had a couple of days to check out the forum after finishing TGO on Sunday evening, and it's good to see there's been lots of activity here... there are more people here than I expected!

This is the best book in the series, Bakker's writing is on another level.  Much tighter narrative and better pacing than the previous books.  It'll be interesting to see how he wraps up these threads in TUC; there still seems to be a long way to go before everything comes together.   Loved the appearance of a 'tekne artifact' at last.  That Cnaiur is back is such an expected treat.  I missed the debauched, murderous lunatic.

I think I'd need go through the book a second time before getting into some of the bigger ongoing debates here (and I think that's going to wait for retail copy), I will say that I was sure Serwa was singing Sorcery at the end of the Ishterebinth chapter.  It never occured to me that she wasn't until reading through the forum.

There are couple of things that I haven't seen discussed:

(1) I had the impression from earlier books that the Judging Eye wasn't always open, that Mimara would only see with it when IT decided to show her something.   Maybe I need to re-read the  But here she seems to be able to control it, or there's just a lot more going on that it seems to think she needs to see.  Or it's the qirri.

(2) I think their defectives is something else the Dunyain were ultimately wrong about, and that there's something important, and ultimately very useful about defective/broken Dunyain with emotions.  Not for the Thousand Thousand Halls, maybe, but certainly out in the world.

I was also half-convinced the mixed-up timeline wasn't actually a mistake, at least until the last few chapters.  That the Priority Principle is wrong is such a big theme in the book that wasn't sure that... I dunno, maybe the same events could be happening in different times in different places?  Not sure how I feel about that, really.  Earwa is weird, but maybe not that weird.

Gene Wolfe - Book of the New Sun...

Has anyone read it?  Thinking of doing a re-read pre-TGO...

It sets a really high standard for fantasy literature, IMO.  One of the best.
I shouldnt judge it too harshly because I never read it through, but it wasn't to my liking. Though I know there are those around here who did very much like it.

Hey SR/anyone, did you read Night's Dawn by Peter F Hamilton? I think it starts with The Reality Dysfunction.

Have you read anything else Hamilton? If you have, chances are you'll really like it.

If not... be warned that like everything else of his I've read, it takes a while to get going and is *very* long.  The ideas are really interesting once you're far enough in that things start taking shape.

Yikes was totally directed at me, rhizome.

I mean, I know we have something like a thousand topics but previously I was good at remember them when my associations are pinged ;).

Yeah, I got that -- sorry if I implied otherwise.

There are a lot of similarities between Bakker & Wolfe:  really good writing, weird books, heavy theological undertones...

So, I'm not surprised by the reaction in that thread.  I had a really hard time with it the first time through, and I certainly see how it's not to all tastes... much more so than Bakker, actually.

General Misc. / Re: The Great Ordeal ARCs
« on: June 09, 2016, 11:51:18 pm »
Why would anyone sell an ARC!?

Bunch of ungrateful and undeserving sranc, should have been left to howl at the gates.
I can understanding selling after the book is released. If you don't care about it, no need to hold onto it. Get it to someone who would appreciate owning it. That said, selling it prior to the release of the book itself seems deplorable. I blame Overlook, mainly, for not properly vetting who they sent books to.
I believe you can just go to the website and sign up to get ARCs. I don't think you get to pick, so people that are selling them just get a bunch of ARCs every month and sell them on Ebay--or at least, that's my impression of how it all works.

I bought my ARC from someone seems to specialize in selling ARCs of all descriptions on eBay.  Most of their negative feedback is from people complaining about being sent uncorrected/advance proofs instead of retail copies!?!
