The Unholy Consult / Re: TUC Reviews
« on: September 14, 2017, 02:03:17 pm »
I'm seeing a common "complaint" about the books with these reviews - it's not all tied up in a pretty bow. No shit, that's part of the point of the writing - it was not done to screw the reader over, but to engage the reader in a way few authors can pull off.

News/Announcements / Re: How grimdark is TDTCB?
« on: September 13, 2017, 05:45:31 pm »
Grimdark seems to have some negative connotations for Bakker.

As it should, seems to be a clumsy construct of having to categorize everything. I guess 2 words is too much ( i.e. Fantasy Horror ), so someone had to make a word up, thinking it was cool but quite the opposite, Grimdark is nerdy uncool ( the word, that is - not the works "falling into" this made up genre ).

I took "Grimdark" as a story where the protagonist/hero is evil.

So it appears, Beyond Redemption by Michael R Fletcher, beat it out. Not that I give a shit that anything did, but anyone know this book? Any good?

I always thought it was taken (sarcastically) from 40k... "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war".

Though Games Workshop is far from what I would consider to be grimdark.

Ah, nice - I bet you're right, has to come from somewhere. Personally, I'm fine with very generic classifications, like sci-fi, fantasy or fantasy horror if you will. Dan Simmons pretty much came up with sci-fi horror, but haven't seen much since that measures up - but I'm not well read, so maybe plenty out there that does.

The Unholy Consult / Re: Why Kelmomas?
« on: September 13, 2017, 05:32:18 pm »
Well, perhaps I'm a simpleton, but I like to think about these things in terms of what would be cool and not necessarily perfectly explained. I think "Kel" asking "us" what do we see, what am I - he's in there and at least somewhat retains his identity if not completely still "whole". The coolest thing about all of this is the horror. The Wathi doll, Mel POV as a severed head from a belt swaying back and forth and then Kel ( imprisoned? ) in the carapace - wicked cool horror going on here! It would really be something to see Kel "learn" his role, conscious of what he is now, fulfilling all of those moments he "dreamed" of murdering millions before he arrived in Golgotterath ( can't remember exactly, but think I remember him saying things like killing everyone to be with his mother - cool foreshadow of his future ). If TNG is simply a machine with Kel "changed" beyond his previous conscious self, that would be easier to write, but not as interesting - just another killing machine story line seen in so many sci-fi works. But to read about his torment, the horror, what he can and cannot control - that would be really wild to read. And aberrations like avoiding killing his mother, or even it's his reason to trek across Earwa was really just to find her ( all the while rapidly reducing the living soul count ). The in's and out's of the carapace may never be neatly explained to us - but it may simply not matter to the greater story. TNG has the odor of being Bakker's God Emperor ( Dune ) attempt, very challenging writing for him. Will be so cool to see him pull it off.

I'm a Gator, so I root for UF Gators, but I like pro-football much more ( go Bucs! ). I root for SEC teams when the Gators aren't getting the job done ( which will likely be this year, again ). Did you go to WVU? Not saying one has/had to attend to root for them, just curious. My oldest son will be checking on colleges in 2 years, so asking around.

The Unholy Consult / Re: Who actually liked TUC?
« on: September 09, 2017, 02:33:37 pm »
*points to himself*

I loved TUC, and I have enjoyed all of his books (not all are great, aka TWLW).

I know you hate it but you know what's great? You FELT something. How many books have you read that you just thought, "Meh" and forgot it after you put it down. How many pop songs have you heard that reverberate in your brain and never make you feel anything or inspire you? So much of the artistic medium is devoted to appealing to the most common denominator in order to hit all those same pleasure-receptors in your brain long enough for you to buy that stupid shit. Meanwhile originality gets suppressed and you live in a bubble never having to feel or think anything new. So it turns out you hated this work, but you know what? A work of art that can make you hate it is better than something that doesn't make you feel at all.

Well said, nFisher - you articulated the point much better than I could. Though I'm hampered by the fact I loved all of the books ( including TWLW - not sure how that was called out as not great ), so I don't identify with those who "hate" the story/books. So much of it was exciting and Bakker's descriptions of horror resonate richly for me ... some of this stuff really scared me, which is awesome.

I'm confused ... Bakker is writing a book The Crabikiad? Will this be part of the next books proper or a side story?

Yeah, the place I grew up with was run by Italian New Yorkers making NY Style pizza. A couple of them didn't speak English. I've had amazing pizza in NY as well. But wouldn't you know it - like for real ( I know about everything I say is a lie - but not this ), the best pizza of my life was in San Francisco - OMG - it was NY style run by an Italian ( so same stuff you get in NY, just made in SF ) and changed my life. I actually re-visted just to get more of that pizza. I got married with kids, so haven't been back in a long time, not sure it's still there.

So I guess pizza pie wins the contest as best pie ...

Ah, the witches, the bitches ... the witches are this story's most tedious feature ... everyone knows women are too stupid for spell casting ... how about you cast the clean the fucking kitchen spell, master that one and we'll talk, eh?
Sorry Tao, I don't mean any offence but I think Wilshire cautioned against comments like these even if it's just sarcasm.
Did I just post this in the building better community thread?  Jokes on me. What was I on yesterday? Sorry Tao, I am an idiot.

Naw, man, you're cool. I think this was what this thread was for - calling out provocateurs and disrespectful conversation. In retrospect, it was poor and unfunny. I was aiming it as a bit of humor on how "Bakker treats women" in his story, but came off lame. I'll retract it.

For the record, and I really really mean this, I care for and respect all of you. I suffer from mischief syndrome and sometimes can't help myself. The more inane my post, the more bored I am at the moment.

Aw, sorry to hear about the near-miss with your boy, I'm sure it was frightening - but glad to hear he's ok now. We parents typically have at least an annual heart attack moment for the safety of our children, but your situation seems it got too close for comfort.

I miss Pizza the most ( GF pizza is "ok", but grew up near this pizza place that has AMAZING pizza/garlic knots/Italian salad ... it's been quite sad missing that place ). My wife is the cook, I am the baker in the family. Got any GF dishes you want to share?

"How do the Dunyain make candles?"
(Wait, scratch that, I just thought about it and now I don't want to know that answer)
... They keep bees, obviously.

Human tallow makes terrible candles, BTW. It's really not worth the effort.

And you know this, how? LOL

I'm sure it's said somewhere, but the tunnels of Ishual - those made by non-men, Dunyain or both? Even for 2,000 years, that would require serious labor.

Another Galician pie is the "empanada gallega". I hope that your grandma made some for you too. Obviously it's not a dessert, and it's stuffed with meat or fish.

I don't think she did, doesn't look familiar. But she was old school, for sure. Had 30+ people shoved in the basement with huge spread of food during the holidays. And she gave coffee to us kids  ;)
