The Darkness That Comes Before / Inrau and the Cants of Compulsion
« on: December 23, 2017, 12:31:27 pm »
So I’m listening to the audiobook version of TDTCB and it’s brought up something I remember wondering over on my first read.

When Inrau first comes to meet Akka at the tavern, is he under the influence of a Cant of Compulsion? The whole sequence he’s in a dreamlike state, and describes “Words that battered whatever will remained to him. Words that walked with his limbs.”

And when he arrives “light spilling from his working mouth. Flakes of sun in his eyes.”

When Akka stops everything seems to come back into focus. All the evidence points at a Cant.

Now here’s my confusion.

1) He later rules out Compelling Inrau as it would leave him with the Mark, and would out him to the Thousand Temples.

2) Wouldn’t Sarcellus and the Shrial Knights noticed him Canting?

The Unholy Consult / Unnecessary Capitalisation
« on: November 27, 2017, 10:01:40 am »
I don't know if any else has noticed it but TUC seems to be filled with certain words being capitalised...when they really don't need to be.

World being upgraded from "world" I can live with, being a term to denote physical existence instead of the Outside and Void to be space.

But TUC, and the TGO seems to just randomly capitalise words for the sake of it.

Ages, Enemy, Terror, among countless others.

It just seems quite glaring. While I'm enjoying the reread even more, this and the incessant use of italics is really doing my nut in.

The Unholy Consult / A certain scene in a pool
« on: October 27, 2017, 03:37:40 pm »
The first scene of Chapter 7. Is this a dream sequence from Cnaiur's POV? I assume he must have found Moenghus floating at some point, but the worm coming out the mouth and the pool seems somewhat surreal.

I'm sure during PoN Cnaiur has an almost identical dream of Moenghus Sr. wherein a snake comes out of his mouth? I need to search either TWP or TTT.

Any thoughts?

General Earwa / The Sohonc and Mangaecca
« on: October 07, 2017, 05:09:17 pm »
I've just been reading some glossary entries and I'm sure this has been mentioned before but I'm not sure whether Bakker ever gave an answer.

If the Mangaecca was formed in 684 as a rival to the Sohonc, but the first Sohonc Grandmaster, Noshainrau, wasn't even born until some 400 years later.

Both Noshainrau and Gin'yursis are listed as tha founders of the Sohonc?

And Titirga is the second Grandmaster of the Sohonc and a pupil of Noshainrau?

Can someone help clear this up for me. I'm getting the impression that the Mangaecca was founded before the Sohonc and splintered from Gin'yursis' teaching. While he founded the Sohonc, Noshainrau was the first human Grandmaster, the position not being necessary or filled due to the presence of Gin'yursis, and thus Noshainrau incorrectly goes down in human history as the founder. Perhaps for religious reasons too, given the Tusks condemnation of Nonmen.

The dates have really thrown me and something just doesn't seem to add up. ???

The Unholy Consult / The Vigil and the Threshold
« on: August 24, 2017, 02:12:49 pm »
From reading TUC and The False Sun, is anyone else if the opinion that the Threshold and the Vigil is one of the same? The platform near the top of the Upright Horn next to the door to the Golden Room.

It seems like another name for the same thing.

Now, if it's "the hanging porch of the Barricades", it should follow that the Barricades and the Portal are the same too?

I had always thought the Barricades encircled all of Golgerrath or was some sort of glamour, but given that the door is iron/nimil compared to the soggomant of the Horn, it makes me think that this is the door that Kellhus forces Aurang to open, and the same door that Mekeritrig needed the Mathesis Pin to pick the lock rather than break it down.

So basically Emilidis made a fancy automatic door...

The Unholy Consult / The Mysunsai and the Red Ghoul
« on: August 18, 2017, 12:48:10 pm »
I just reread this section and I still can't get my head round it.

Obwe Guswuran cheers Ishterebinth joining the Ordeal then within seconds essentially wants to 1v1 them, over perceiving slight?

A force of Quya and Ishroi that arguably relives the Ordeal but the Mysunsai and Tydonni turn on them?

What was the reason, I'm so confused  ???

Part of me thinks it's due to his link to their origin, he seems to kick off after seeing the Mysunsai symbol. Though I read it as he only inspired the Mysunsai rather than founding it and teaching them.

The Unholy Consult / Character and Faction List/ What comes before
« on: August 17, 2017, 02:13:43 pm »
Is there any particular reason the character list was excluded for TUC?

I was hoping we'd have one mapping out who comprised each of the contingents, Trials. Seemed like a good chance to lay out the roster for who would be in the Ordeal, given that a few new names appear, Grimmel etc.

And is in just me, or was the what comes before significantly shorter than previous entries?

The Unholy Consult / [TUC Spoilers] How big is Sil?
« on: August 05, 2017, 04:20:16 pm »
I'm trying to work out how big Sil is, cause his shield is fucking massive, as is the Chair of Hooks iirc.

He was capable of riding a dragon but I'm guessing he was significantly larger than Aurax and Aurang?

The Unholy Consult / [TUC Spoilers]The effects of Chorae
« on: July 28, 2017, 09:43:45 pm »
As far as I'm aware this has been the first book where we've seen "partial" salting. Where a limb or part of one, usually arms of legs is salted from contact instead of killing them.

Yes, we've seen "rinds" or skin damage from proximity to Chorae but not from direct hits.

Serwa survives a direct hit and only loses the arm? But before we've seen cases with those have especially deep Marks to start salting from just proximity. Surely a Mark like Serwa's should have left her dead after a direct hit to the arm rather than losing the limb?

In fact, in the first chapter of TDTCB, Achamian is essentially held at gunpoint by a Chorae above his palm. Now, at 44 years of age at the start his Mark must have been pretty deep.

I made Chorae feel less dangerous seeing people survive them. Was there any explanation for this?

Following Serwa's example shouldn't

The Unholy Consult / [TUC Spoilers] Glimir vs Alamir
« on: July 07, 2017, 03:58:56 pm »
Only just received my copy today and I'm flicking through the Encyclopaedic Glossary and noticed that "Alamir" is listed as the ensorceled sword of High-King's and can half mammoths. It seems to line up exactly with Glimir's description in TGO as wielded by Celmomas but I can't see any mention of Glimir here.

Is Bakker just being a nuissance again and not deciding on which name or spelling he wants to use, I can live with Allosian/Allosium but this triggers my OCD reading of the books majorly. >:(

Anyone else found similar things and wants to mourn with me.

Literature / Mark T Barnes - Echoes of Empire
« on: February 02, 2017, 01:53:34 pm »
Anyone checked this series out?

I just started reading the first book "The Gardens of Stone" yesterday. I've had it for over a year and bought it purely because of the awesome artwork.

It seems pretty good so far but I can't help but wondering if the author has read/been influenced by TSA.

Don't get me wrong, its an extremely different style of world building,we've had wyvern riders, lionmen, half-horse men, glass armour that changes shape, and a number of other concepts different to TSA in the first chapter, but there's a lot of similarities.

The names are in places fairly similar to both TSA and Malazan and in the first chapters there has been a number of similarities with the magic in particular:

Sorcerers organised into Schools and Covens, taking the field.
Their eyes and mouths glowing when they use it (or so it seems) "made a lantern of their faces".
Agonic collar equivalents, "salt-forged steel" that renders magic users harmless.
Spells describes as cantos and theorems
Spells taking the forms of blue-white geometries
Rotating geometric "Wards"
A seemingly anagogic spell that takes the form of "butterflies of light" that explode when they fly into people.
The main character uses the "Possibility Tree", a technique taught by an ancient order of warrior-mage-scholars, to decide on what to do. The process and the name just made me think "Probability Trance".
We've got a "Mark" equivalent too looks like.

There's a couple of maps, and a fairly expansive glossary of Houses, Factions, Races and terms in the back, reminiscent of Dune.

All the races and terms are pretty heavy going and the writing is definitely not on a level with TSA, but the first couple of chapters have convinced me to give it a fair chance. It's a trilogy that can hopefully tide me over a little until TUC.

I'll post updates as I read!

EDIT: I've posted a link to the glossary if anyone wants to check it out beforehand.

The Great Ordeal / Who are The Jaguars?
« on: November 22, 2016, 09:05:48 pm »
In Chapter One of the Great Ordeal, Hituridas, the Ainoni soldier mentions his "fellow Jaguars".

This is the quote: "Hatturidas continued tramping. Beyond him, thousands of his brother Jaguars toiled, and innumerable others beyond them as well, bent beneath packs and arms and armour. The World seemed to roll as a ball beneath them, so vast was the Great Ordeal."

I missed it on my first read but I'm trying to recall any mention of these guys. I'm assuming they're some sort of company of Kishyati/Ainoni soldiers but as far as I can tell they're never mentioned again in the book, or in any of the battle sequences.

Any got any thoughts on this?

I'm hoping for at least a small mention on them in the expanded glossary in TUC.

Author Q&A / Is Sarl Norsirai?

Pretty simple question.

I always imagined he was but don't recall if it was mentioned.

Author Q&A / Heraldry and banners
« on: June 25, 2016, 02:53:03 pm »
I really enjoy the banners and symbols of the various armies and potentates through the series.

Enough that I cobbled together this: http://imgur.com/a/s7zX1

Will we ever hear about or see the banners of ancient nations like Kuniuri, Aorsi or Kyraneas?

Or the Copper Tree symbol of the Cu'Jara Cinmoi expanded upon or other Nonman banners?

Cheers

General Earwa / About Ce Tydonn
« on: January 11, 2016, 09:18:06 pm »
Since Ce Tydonn is now what used to be Cengemis before being conquered by the Tydonni tribes, is the "Ce" part of the name a shortened form of Cengemis and is a sort of double barrelled name?

Cengemis + Tydonni invasion = Ce Tydonn

The Tydonni are never referred to as the Ce Tydonni, and the remaining Cengemi and called as such.

It was just a thought I had when I was trying to work out how to pronounce Ce Tydonn ( Say, Seh, Suh, Cay, Cuh?)

Pretty neat piece of world building if it was intentional.
