Theliopa would be my choice for an Earwan lunch date.

1. She probably wouldn't eat much.
2. Lots of conversation would arise over her fashion choice for the date.
3. I'm pretty sure that I would survive the date.

More from Big Big Train. A live performance of "Swan Hunter", featuring a five piece brass band. Understated English nostalgia:

"Call me up, boy/Sit ye down by the fireside/Spend some time/All the pride, boy/And the tears/Tears enough to fill the Tyne."

Pallas - "The Last Angel"

A revival of '70s prog, complete with pipe organ, declamatory vocals, and a ravishing coda featuring two sopranos.

The English prog group Big Big Train has a new CD coming out on May 17th. Here's a very nice track titled "Alive". Perfect music for 5pm on Fridays. (Also a good substitute for coffee for 7am on Mondays.)

Nice find, Beard - thanks for sharing. I think R will include this in the next history/glossary.
All credit goes to the noted Earwan archeological team of Nôwan Nös and Khan Tri Membr, who should absolutely be credited in future TSA publications. And, truly, can we show some love for Zöreius Öenghus, comic, wise man, deserter (probably), and general nogoodnik.

* * * * FRAGMENT THE SECOND * * * *

"Hey, Proyas! You made it! Way to go! Folks, I tutored this idiot, and, hey, a teacher can only work with the material that he's given, correctamundo? Whoa, whoa, there, Proyas! Calm down. Don't think that I won't give you a seriously sorcerously painful beatdown for reasons of nostalgia and auld lang syne. That's better.

Hey, I don't see the Scylvendi anywhere! Good fucking riddance. Nasty piece of work. But, hey, without him we don't get Mr. Big. Kellhus! Felicitations on your promotion to.....what are you? What was that? Asshole-Prober? What the fuck? What did he say? Ass Getting Poorer? What? Oh, pardonnez-moi, Aspect-Emperor. Oh, that's very classy. <shrugs, then sotto voce> (Fucking meaningless bullshit, but hey, whatever...) <aloud> You're looking good. Nice halo. Chicks dig the halo. No, much better than you looked way back when the Scylvendi dragged you into Momemn. Rags to riches. Fucking rags to fucking riches. You bastard. You utter bastardly piece of bastardly crap. You are a fucking thief. Folks, watch out. By the time this Dunyain prick is finished, you not only won't have pots to piss in, you fucking won't have dicks to piss with! Oh, hey, the Dunyain prick is giving me Look Number 53. The understanding, disappointed look. Oh, do I sadden you, Kellhus! Do I not measure up to your lofty standards? Kindly go fuck yourself. In fact, Mr. Asshole-Emperor, the whole purpose of my visit to this shitshow of a celebration is to tell you exactly that. Fuck you. Oh, and good luck with that whore-of-a-wife over there, Esmenet! Hi, sweetheart! Miss me? Fuck you, too. You two were made for each other. King Thief and Queen Whore. Bow down, people! Meet the new boss, same as the old boss! Tell me, folks, which is worse, a conniving idiot like Xerius or a really smart conniving sonofabitch like Kellhus? I'll pose that as my final question for this extinguished dissembly. Good fucking day to all you fucking clowns. Sleep tight, don't let the skin-spies bite. Yippie-ki-yay, motherfuckers. That's fucking right, step the fuck away from me.....whoa! WHOA! The Kellhus Voice! Yes, I sure fucking heard that! "The next time you come before me, Drusas Achamian, you will kneel!" Is that so, chief? Well, pal, I don't swing that way. But Esmi's pretty good at that particular practice, if you make it worth her while. You're going to have to lay waste to many kingdoms to keep her in the style she prefers. Anything else for me? No? Good. I'll show myself out.

Literature / Re: YOU MUST TELL ME ... What else are you reading?
« on: April 17, 2019, 03:08:18 pm »
Started "The War Within", Book 2 of "The Great God's War" from the pen of the venerable Stephen Donaldson. Two chapters so far. I'm deliberately reading no more than one chapter per sitting.

Stephen Donaldson's latest, Book 2 of "The Great God's War", entitled "The War Within", is available in bookstores now. I hope to start it soon.

@Wilshire - i agree w/your comments re: Bakker. At this point i find him to be an intentionally undependable narrator of his own story in a lot of ways. Im sure he would tell me that my loss of faith in him would be his goal and that i am now better off.

Ill buy whatever, if anything, comes next but im much more neutral towards the author and thus the work.
This really resonates with me, Rots. Similarly, I no longer completely trust Bakker as a story-teller, and, as you note, that's probably the position in which he wants to place his readers. It's a very modern, or perhaps even a modernist approach to fiction.

One more galaxy stripped clean by the No-God.

This actually made me laugh out loud - that said, it's troubling to consider your joke seriously - it could be the result of someone and not something.
Cixin Liu's "dark forest strategy" in action. Scary stuff.

Philosophy & Science / Re: Black Hole Sun: On the Materialist Sublime

Well, as a strict armchair Kantian and "physicist" (that is, an idiot who reads things he can barely understand) I have no idea what this article is trying to tell us.

Quote
So, indeed, nature, of course, is not sublime, in and of itself, it is sublime only in our perception of it.  "The sublime" in other words, would be phenomena not noumena, as a matter of course.  So, nature, as noumena, is not sublime, a priori, the sublime is a posteriori as a matter of course.  I'd think that is a bit like asking if there could be an a priori phenomena, which might be like asking if there is a married bachelor though...
Very good. Sublimity resides in the perceiver, not the perceived.

Finished Neuropath. Art. Definitely the best book I have read in the last year.

Hmmmpf. I generally struggle for the right combination of adjectives to describe my revulsion for "Neuropath". I think that, for me, it's the most inhumane story I have ever read.

Philosophy & Science / Re: Black Hole Sun: On the Materialist Sublime
« on: April 11, 2019, 02:52:30 am »
A few questions [edited and expanded for clarity]:

1. From what perspective can the photograph of the black hole be described as "beautiful" or "sublime"?

2. If a black hole is a work of art, who is the artist? ("Work" implies a worker)

3. What can it mean for quantum matter to "perform"? Does an oscillating pendulum "perform"?

4. From what perspective can an aesthetic judgment that quantum activity is "performatively sublime" be made?

A very provocative and interesting post from this "new materialist perspective" with which I am not familiar. Thanks for sharing, sciborg2!
