If any of you guys are still tinkering with this, or want an alternative idea about mechanics, see if you can dig up a copy of Seven Seas (a pirates with magic role playing game). The mechanics are what I'd call cinematic, rather than brutally realistic but there's some great stuff to support group storytelling (incl fate/luck). Also, Ars Magica is a caster focused game with a very cool magic system, also worth checking out.

A game with wildly divergent power levels can work btw, just look at Rifts or Cyberpunk. That wouldn't be my choice for a kind of rules set, but I've played so many friggin' RPGs I'm kind of jaded about a lot of mechanic heavy rules sets. I tend toward storytelling focused rules sets with stripped down mechanics.

Yeah, the name is a little misleading. :)

I listen to pretty much everything really, Lately I've listening to a lot of folk and dark ambient. Kammarheit, Autechre, that kind of shizz. Plus a little Lera Lynn after binge watching True Detective season 2.

I'll freely admit to playing way to much D&D as a young man. Deities and Demigods was a wonderful primer on world myth and religion.

The first thing that came to mind is A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. Great novel. Actually, I'm lying, the first thing that came to mind was the Expanse series, but then I read further. I also really enjoyed Jim Butcher's newest steampunk novel - The Aeronaut's Windlass.

Bohren & der Club of Gore - Black Earth.

Hard to classify. Gothic-Jazz-Ambient maybe? IDK... it's awesome though.

So this is a thing here huh? Cool. I'm getting a real "long timer listener first time caller" Grosse Pointe Blank vibe. :D

if someone could just show me where the coffee and cookies are I'll get on with the "Hi, my name is Fenris777 and I'm an R. Scott Bakker fan.." speech.

Technically I got here through Three Pound Brain, but now we're just talking messy details. Anyway, hi all.
