General Earwa / (srancpost) opinions on racism
« on: June 11, 2018, 05:44:45 pm »
It sounds weird to say, I know, I enjoy the racism in the second apocalypse. It adds an extra level of realism to his world. I like how the second apocalypse leans heavily on an old-style racism. Examples like "so and so's norsirai heritage made him more outspoken that was seemly." How the Galeoth and Thuns tend to be thought of as fools or uncultured. This is because they are a different race then the Ketyai, who rule the south.
I know this draws parallels to history the Roman empire looked down on the many tribes surrounding the empire. We still use the anti-Semitic term they  called them. "Barbarian, they thought their language sounded like "bar-bar.""
Although there are slaves of all colors in the books but the instances where it's noted that the slaves were norsirai. This always stuck out to me and gave the series a gravity and tone where I would think, "no way this will ever be on TV. The internet would have a field day."
But back to my point this is maybe the only fantasy book I know of where traditional "white people" are not the majority or race on top. As an African-American this isn't a notion familiar with. Usually if something doesn't start a white protagonist that is the first thing you're informed about. In a 2018 political climate blah blah that's worth an award or something for the cover of the books right? I want more positive press and promotion for bakker, his books flip your modern notion of race and causes you to think.

Hope this makes sense I don't want to come off as being racist or mean. What are some examples you can think of

General Earwa / Re: (Spoilers All) (Srancpost) The Solitary God
« on: April 30, 2018, 09:53:41 pm »
I will be using the term 'srancpost' for my 'ideas, observations and quandaries.

In a way didn't Fane create the solitary God to have his Believers believe in "it" so that it will manifest in the outside as a greater soul, with his own sub reality or paradise.
It's what I thought kellhus was doing, gaining followers/believers/worshippers in this life so that in the outside when he becomes a hunger he can pull his followers to his paradise, his own reality. Like Odin would have Valhalla, a collection of the greatest internal warriors on standby.

The Unholy Consult / Re: Seswatha and Nau-Cayûti's fate
« on: April 12, 2018, 12:25:29 pm »
Before reading this thread I pictured the events happening like this: Iëva poisons Nau-Cayûti. He looks dead, she request he be buried. the Inch pulls his casket from the ground and flys off. someone finds the grave ripped open, "hey it was her that wanted him buried, grab her." The Inch or someone hints that shes seen the Inverse Fire so maybe she cracks. or more bakker-like, human torture is nothing to her because shes seen her souls ultimate fate.

General Misc. / Re: Video Game Thread! What are you playing?
« on: April 06, 2018, 02:53:34 am »
I've clocked in almost 230hours of Crusader Kings 2. It's the only game where I can play a Catholic Noble who murder children is Praise by the Pope and can have sex with my siblings and/or murder them. It's good for role-playing as a three seas caste Noble. But there isn't a three seas map and I'm not up to the task of making one.

Sorry if this has been discussed (I haven't fully read the thread). Is there a connection between why Sorcerers aren't allowed to have families and the no-God. As far as I know only 3 sorcerers have had children. Ses, kellhus, and akka.

7
This is a interesting thought but the Consult didn't know Kellhus existed back then they were trailing Akka.

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO Spoilers] Whale Mothers
« on: June 25, 2017, 07:24:01 pm »
While rereading, I was surprised I didn't get Achamian's explanation about how the Wathi doll works and the connection (the colors in the two passages below are the match) with both the previous Aörsi chapters (about Kellhus shredding Proyas's identity) and Mimara's Judging Eye vision about the Whale Mothers and Kellhus sitting on his black throne.
I mean, the passage even starts with the vision of Nau-Cayuti meeting Shae.

Quote from: TGO hardcover page 147, all fonts except color are in the text
A pit bent into a circle, the most perfect of the Conserving Forms...
"But isn't trapping souls an ancient art?" she asked.
"It is..." Achamian replied. He thought of the Wathi doll he once owned - and used to save himself from the Scarlet Spires when everyone, including Esmenet, had thought him dead. He had been reluctant, then, to think of the proxy that had been trapped within it. Had it suffered? Was it yet another of his multitudinous sins?
One more blemish for Mimara to glimpse with her Judging Eye?
"But souls are exceedingly complicated," he continued. "Far more so than the crude sorceries used to trap them. The intricacies of identity are always sheared away. Memory. Faculty. Character. These are cast into the pit... Only the most base urges survive in proxies."
Which was what made them such willful slaves.
"So to have your soul caught..." She trailed, frowning.
"Is to be twice-damned..." he said, trailing at the behest of a queer reluctance. Few understood the monstrosity of sorcery better than he. "To have your hungers enslaved in the World, while your thoughts are tormented in the Outside."

Quote from: TGO hardcover page 45, all fonts except color are in the text
They seize him from time to time, the Sons of this place, and he feels the seams tear, hears his scream. But he cannot come apart - for unlike the Countless Dead, his heart beats still.
There is a head on a pole behind you.
[...]
And he sees that these things are meat, here. Love is meat, Hope is meat. Courage. Outrage. Anguish. All these things are meat - seared over fire, sucked clean of grease.
There is a head on a pole.

I also noticed a similarity between the quotes above in red, with the quotes in purple below. It's not exactly the same, but Kellhus/ the Dunyain/ TTT as an avatar of "The guy(s) bringing Hell on Earth". Stripping everything and everyone down to its bare utility, just like the "Sons of this Place" stripping down people's Thoughts (as opposed to Souls) to the bone.

Quote from: TGO hardcover page 159-161, all fonts except color are in the text
Women bred into monstrous instruments of procreation, until they had become little more than puches slung about their wombs.
The misery. The huffing and moaning. The mewling screams. The inhuman men filing to their asignations, utterly heartless and insensate. The slapping of hip and genitalia. The animality of coupling stripped to its essential germ, to the milking pitch of inseminations...
Sadism without desire. Cruelty - unimaginable cruelty - absent the least will to inflict suffering.
And evil that only the Inchoroi could surpass.
And when her gaze flinches, she sees that this crim is no aberration, but rather an inevitable and extreme implication of what rules the whole. [...] The fevious pitch of intellect, domineering, devoid of compassion or humility...
And the will - the blasphemous will most of all. The deranged hunger to become God.
[...]
Suddenly she sees Him, her stepfather, Anasûrimbor Kellhus I, the Holy Aspect-Emperor, high on his throne, wreathed in darkness and fury, a malignant cancer cast across the far corners of the world...
Doom incarnate.
Suddenly she sees the Truth of the old Wizard's terror. A Dûnyain ruled the World - a Dûnyain!.

The quotes in blue also cause me to wonder if trapping souls is the way the Inchoroi made the Nonmen immortal: I mean, it would explain their damnation and why their memories fail, with Hell feasting upon them. It'd also be ironic to have the Nonmen be strung between the World and the Outside/ Hell by the Inchoroi, since they revere passages and thresholds.

Holy shit. What your saying puts A lot of other things into perspective. This need it's own thread

Atrocity Tales / Re: The Carathayan [Short Story Spoilers]
« on: May 26, 2017, 10:55:04 pm »
I had trouble placing the year too.

I figured it was in the midst of the Unification Wars, because one section describes him "warring for the Aspect-Emperor across the Secharib cane fields". The section where he stares down a cobra.

I definitely understand his appearance now too, awkward giant is very fitting!
I forgot about that part. I picture him like a tall basketball player looking awkward guy.

Okay on my first read thru, I can't place the year. It must be before the unifaction wars because there's no mention of the holy aspect emperor or any "sweet kell" or whatever phrase. Uster is still a mercenary so maybe he hasn't met Saubon.

Uster' s sister seem to be witches or something of the sort who can correctly see the future. Uster himself know how he will die and has no worry unless there is a Bashrag invoked.
Another affirmation that all of this has happened before.
I like the fact what we've studied the metaphysics of Earwa like sorcerous scholars and there still mysteries like ghost.

The Unholy Consult / Who will die?
« on: May 23, 2017, 01:34:30 am »
I thought it would be a little fun game to guess deaths. Who will die in TUC, we know death will come swirling down but to who and what order?

*sorry atm I've only thought of one, I was excited by the idea by now I have to think of the other first and second teir characters.

**and should I post this as spoiler?

The Unholy Consult / Re: Crazy speculation only

Serwa develops a crush on Sorweel but he won't reciprocate it because the Holy Deep and Immiriccas drove him crazy. So while she keeps trying to make a pass at him he's sobbing and muttering in Ihrimsu about Immiriccas' Erratic lover in the shadows. But in battle he goes completely batshit and carves through sranc Sibawul-style, screaming about how they are Vile imitations of Cunuroi perfection and raving about how Cujura Cinmoi was a fool for dooming his race. Sorweel then becomes new-Cnaiur after Serwa uses a Cant of Compulsion to try and sleep with him. And Moe-2 develops a phobia of Sorweel.
I'm loving your idea. The dynamics of the niom have changed. Serwe now loves, Sorweels is brave and Moe jr is weak.
