General Misc. / Re: [TV Spoilers] Game of Thrones (S7)
« on: August 07, 2017, 11:01:25 am »
I need to echo my comments from last week. GOT is becoming more conventional every episode. That's my feeling after watching the Stark reuniting, one sibling more special than the other. A family of chosen ones?

The paradox for me is that I quit reading the books as it felt like going nowhere, and here I am lamenting the return of conventionality and predictability. I enjoyed the feeling of danger, that no one is safe, that feeling is receding.

TV VFX sure has gone a long way, the Dragon lighting up the L-army. Still, for me the Battle of the Bastards was more powerful. Magic and superpowers, they are difficult ingredients to get right.

No matter what happens, people will believe this was all part of Kellhus' plan until Bakker has finished the next series and died of old age.
Like I once said, Kellhus theories are the new Möenghus crackpots :P

^ that. Bakker has stated and restated Kellhus = dead a lot of times here and at the AMA...

The Unholy Consult / Re: [TUC spoilers] The visions - Not Ajokli?
« on: August 06, 2017, 05:04:17 pm »
Guys, first up, I'm on holiday and on my phone so it's difficult to read the TWO PAGES of new content  :P So, if this is being discussed already then please somebody link me to it!

OK, from my read of the AMA, there were two direct questions regarding whether Ajokli was sending the visions. The first asked if it was Ajokli, and Bakker replied with "that would certainly seem to be a safe supposition". The second time asked if Ajokli had been talking to Kellhus since the Circumfix and the reply was "that which comes after determines that which comes before". Paraphrasing both times, sorry.

I note he does not say "yes" in either case.

I don't believe it's Ajokli at all. I'm not letting go of the Outside Kellhus theory unless it's prized from my child dead hands. Thoughts?

Interesting. I read both those statements as confirmation that it *is* Ajokli.

- safe supposition ---> I take that as a gentle yes.

- that which comes after determines that which comes before ---> What comes after is Ajokli possessing Kellhus, what comes before is Ajokli sending Kellhus visions.

Great stuff, Madness!

Yeah, I think "even mighty Likaro" was my favorite bit.

I sure am curious about where we go from here.  A few of the things I'll be most curious about going forward:

-What's the role for The Most Blessed Fraction, the character that you lot call Crabicus?

-What's the role for Meppa?  I felt like when Meppa was introduced in WLW it had to portend something huge which, at least for TAE, turned out not to be the case at all.  Does RSB still have something big planned?  Will he remain the last Cishaurim?  One of my bigger disappointments in his role not escalating in the last two books was that I'd love to see the Cishaurim and the Psukhe explored a bit more.

-Given Zeum's presumably much bigger role in the next series will we also get more of a taste of the Iswazi?  I hope see.  I think Bakker's magic system is great, so throwing one more on the pile would be cool.

-How do the Nonmen re-emerge?  Did the Lord of Swans die in this book or can he maybe be one of the principals remaining?  Will we ever hear about Nin'janjin, or was he lost to the ages?

Per Bakker's AMA responses, nearly all of the above falls in the category RAFO...

It's raucous alright. Yet, could you, or shouldn't you, inject some ambiguity?

-One other thing that I don't think has been mentioned vis a vis the Consult's competency : the actual defensive battle plan for Golgotterath was very well done. In fact, unless Kellhus was going to pull a major coup in the golden room, the Ordeal was in huge trouble with the arrival of the Horde 2.0 AND the fact that the Consult had let their famed walls become destroyed. They were essentially trapped in a bottleneck with mostly destroyed fortifications, no food, and a huge horde of Sranc trying to get in, all while the gate into the Ark was barred and there were other baddies still in play within Golgotterath.

So in that much at least, the Consult was very competent.

Good point, Likaro. After all the Consult bashing, you are right, their battle tactics turned out to be pretty good.

News/Announcements / Re: Quorum

Come. Who will take the knife to my throat?

It's already hard, nearly impossible, to keep up with all the TUC discussion. Plus Quorum would be 4-D Chess. Nice nevertheless.

;)

If Aurang is dead, Bakker really should have given us at least an awesome 1 full page sorcerous battle. Instead he gets one-shotted and pwned by Kellhus.

I get that Kellhus is fucking powerful. But Aurang has been around for ages and fought countless battles - he should put up more fight than Meppa.

Which I guess is par for the course with Bakker. He is a master of big picture battlefield description but has very few good individual duel scenes that I can recall.

Well, it's Kellhus plus a growing-in-influence-Ajokli that smacks down Aurang. And remember, once upon a time there were many Inchoroi. Most of them have perished in battle. Aurang has survived for ages, but he has not been on the battlefield all that time. Kellhus plus Ajokli have been fighting battles for a few decades, since the First Holy War.

I do agree that it would have been gratifying to see a more extended battle between the two. I take thematic consolation, the darkness comes before everyone, including the Inchoroi and Kellhus.

Regarding Aurang's laser antics, using a longdistance weapon is nice, but apparently not sufficient. However, was it Aurang that wielded that laser? Wasn't it an Erratic or another?

Also, how exactly is a Wathi doll made?  They ever mention it?

I soul is torn from living person and imprisoned in a doll. It is mentioned somewhere, can't remember where though. That's about all the detail we have.

Interesting how that doll in the scene by the fire in TWP is the first confirmation that Kellhus is one of the Few.

The Unholy Consult / Re: So Kellhus "went mad?"
« on: August 04, 2017, 11:00:49 am »
Yes. The question of Kellhus's sanity has been discussed at length, because it has been a lingering issue in the books. It turns out that he was going mad, i.e. he was being taken over.

If that conversation was truth, then why would Kellhus talk about turning the world itself into a hell for them to feast on, when Bakker specifically said he intended to save the world?
Taking into account what Bakker said about the gradual possession by Ajokli that Kellhus was suffering, it seems to me the passages about turning the world into hell belong to Ajokli (they are at the very end of the Golden Room sequence, when Ajokli is said to take over completely). Were those lines written in bold in the book?

I believe so, yes.

The barricades

The crazy ass gravity armor the red dude was wearing

5 Other flaming swords

The Immaculate Rim. I enjoyed it's description when the Red Ghoul was slaughtering Sranc.

Yup, he should have come around more often. ;)

And just like his father, he is murdered at the culmination of his planning by a mad son.

That is very well said Sharmat. So obvious that i had overlooked it.

[EDIT Madness: Sorry, hovering. Fixed your quote tag.]

Gotta concur with that precise observation! Beautiful pattern recognition.

That's kind of a bold assumption Hiro, puts someone on the spot. I'll let them speak for themselves lol.

Well, it's my honest impression. I did not intend to put anyone on the spot.
