What happened with Itkovian reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxvPjuREDpE

I don't know if the song fits, but the ending scene sure does. It's like The Rose meetings the ending of Conan the Barbarian, only they're giving gifts and not putting out candles.

About half way through The Emperor's Blades by Brian Stavely. MSJ the Golden Recommender has done it again. Such a good book!

I'm going to seriously have to go through your post history and see your 'book reviews' (or whatever we can call you're one line recommendations like this one) and see if I can rule them out or not.

Is be the worse reviewer ever. I would spoil the books. I don't know how to go into it without telling it. Here's a few must read series.

The Unhewn Throne (low magic)
Tower of Babel (low magic}
Traitor Son Cycle (high magic)

In that order. Seriously, TUT is full of mystery and intrigue. I'm on book 3 (the last) and I have no clue how this is gonna go. I have no complaints, from character, plot, prose or any other thing someone might bitch about. Just excellent.
Who is the author of Tower of Babel? Is it Adam Elliott? Getting several search results and dont want to grab the wrong one.

I'm still on the Malazan slog; I'm nearly finished with House of Chains now.
I just finished a reread of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.  Have you read any of the Esslemont books?  If so what did you think?

A lot of people seem to really, really love Karsa.

He, to me, was the most bland, one dimensional, and uninteresting character in the entire series, which made House of Chains the worst book in the series. Maybe tied for worst with book 9, Dust of Dreams.

That said, still good. Erikson is a great writer, but I think he sometimes lost track of the narrative.

I actually like Karsa. He's a "problmatic fave" sure, but I can't help but find him interesting. He's weird, but when it's fun when he interacts with others. And boy, can he dance. I don't think he'll ever be a cinnamon roll though. As of now, Itkovian is the only one.

I like Torvald Nom too.

I thought HOC had a really great opening. Once Karsa goes out into the world my opinion of him soured as he, imo, became really archetypal and less of an actual character.

52% complete. House of Chains is a quicker read, but I don't think it has the same emotional impact MOI did. Like, I don't care as much.

Tavore makes me smile though. She is impressive. However, she is a little too remote which would explain why people have doubts, but it's clear to me that she has to have a "queenly mask" and she does show her humanity in private.

My favorite for badass is Kalam Mekhar. The sequences of him ... doing a variety of totally badass infiltrations and dazzling escapes ... are some of the best in the series for raw 'coolness' factor.

Midnight Tides is a great novel. Could almost be a standalone Malazan, or a starting book, due to its new setting and cast within the series. Some of the best characters in the series show up here.

I'm 11% complete in Midnight Tides. And yea, it certainly looks like it and Lether is a shithole.

That was quick! You must have enjoyed it. Quite a nice little rebuke of capitalism, and the Bugg/Tehole banter is top notch.
