Title: [TUC Spoilers] Tolkien & Eucatastrophe
Post by: Madness on December 08, 2017, 05:45:47 pm
Alright, who is holding out? How come I've never heard this brought up in relation to Bakker's writing before.

This is just one of many, many articles I've suddenly discovered - I have previously read Tolkien's On Fairy Stories a number of times, though pre-TUC.

How come no one has ever asked Bakker a question about this?

Eucatastrophe, Discatastrophe and the destruction of the Ring (https://ilverai.wordpress.com/2012/11/10/eucatastrophe-discatastrophe-and-the-destruction-of-the-ring/)

I had hopes that there would be an eucatastrophic moment at the end of TUC, but Bakker is philosophically the polar opposite of Tolkien, and it was a vain hope.

Perhaps the conclusion of TUC can be seen as eucatastrophic if you take the perspective of the Consult....all five of them (six, I guess, if you count Shae).

Or Bakker's thought was "[j]ust as light is unperceivable without darkness, so too is eucatastrophe meaningless without the presence of discatastrophe or 'sorrow and failure'" (On Fairy-Stories 153).

That would be my hope for the proposed TNG series.

One of the reasons for my deepening animus towards TUC is the "Our Salvation" scene, which gives us a glimpse of the eucatastrophic possibility only to snatch it away and replace it with the Grand Discatastrophe of System Resumption.

You'd have preferred Ajokli reigning supreme  :o ?

I'd prefer a denouement that wasn't a choice between two Grand Discatastrophes.

I'm a simpleton, just pulling from something cool/fun to read - no expectations from me.

Hey, Tao, I'm just relieved that I used "denouement" correctly. Wasn't sure until I looked it up just now..... :)
