Title: Next Year's Zaudunyanicon
Post by: Madness on August 14, 2017, 08:25:38 pm
Scare quotes because I don't know when that will be. Possibly Bakker's next release though I will also work towards an annual gathering.

The Nascenti had a number of thoughts over the weekend about "What We Wished We'd Thought Of Earlier" so I make this thread so that they and future attendees might source a wish-list for Zaudunyanicon Next Year (in perpetuity) ;).

Let us crowdsource!

Anywhere except London Ontario necessarily means buying Bakker and family a ticket to the location, perhaps hotel accommodations as well.

Anyway, there is a 99.9999999999% chance that I will not come next year too :P

If it is the desire to hold next Zaudunyanicon somewhere else, I'd happily contribute money for airfare and accommodations for the Bakker family.

Good. Purchase for them tickets to Egypt.

Oh. In this case, we host Zaudunyannicon 2.0 in Old Egypt! Thanks for clearing that up.

Tickets will be more expensive "next year", and payment should probably be due two weeks prior to the event. Just be prepared ;) .

I should clarify...

I don't mean to say that I would buy airfare and accommodations for his family myself, I make good money but not that much. :)  But, perhaps we could crowd source the funds and I will would be willing to contribute to that.

Of course dharmakirti, it would be built into the price of the ticket, or something of that nature. Bankrolling the whole thing was doable with just cheap event space in a currancy that was 30% discounted to mine, but I wouldn't be able to do that if we did it in some place other than Canada.

Double indeed.

There is WorldCon Dublin 2019. Though, for me, half the fun of Zaudunyanicon was the intimacy of the weekend.

To be fair making it as easy as possible for Bakker to attend should be one of the primary concerns, adding a couple of thousand of pounds of cost on top of what else would be required might make the event a non starter.

In all seriousness, yes, holding it anywhere other than London Ontario nearly guarantees Bakker won't come, costs aside.

Not to mentioned HOY probably spent as much as we did on the event itself getting there which - given months of advance planning time - probably was comparable to how much someone might have spent coming from Europe.

Thanks, Merchant! It was something like 3000 miles each way! (all in a 3-day weekend...) It was most certainly a slog of slogs, but it was more than worth it. There's nothing else I would have done this for.

Also, the intimate setting is what made the con superb. It had a kind of fanaticism that gets lost at larger events. Professionalism has an implicit soullessness.

That's the right sort of mental :)

Normally only on Westeros can you travel that far so quickly. (if you watch Game of Thrones you'll get it )

I love wee stories like this in our community, once we start going erratic we'll carve the scene into the walls and celebrate it :D

I've never gone abroad, so I haven't partken in exceptionally long flights, but that coast to coast flight is a bitch. Thank you for suffering :) .

The event matched my wildest expectations. But next year we riot if the bar doesn't have limes.

How can I drink a decent gin and tonic, WITHOUT ANY LIMES

were you drinking out of bowls? Also isn't that a fish based alcohol anpoi? No thanks.

Dude the bar didn't even have limes, you think they would have served us in bowls?

Also, no, just drinking out of regular glassware. I think everyone had beer or wine except me - MG might have had a gin and tonic as well though.

Some of the pubs i used to drink you had a choice of lager or vodka/whisky with coke, that's about it.

I mind walking into a pub when i was just legal to enter and someone asked for 10 tequillas /salt and limes and the barman just told us to "fuck off". This is the late 90's we're much more civilized over here now, you can even buy a White Russian without getting stabbed.

HOY had a mixed drink or two.

To be fair to the restaurant, it was their first night open since the soft open a few weeks prior.

I'll call ahead next year and make sure their 'full bar' is indeed full. :) . Cheers
