Oh, right. Nah, book #2 opens up the narrative world a lot without the difficulty of the opening novel(lla). I just think at the time it was overwhelming coming right off the first piece.

Lol, I did not continue Donaldson after I finished or failed to finish the duology of the first two books. Though, I actually might try again through the digital library. Now that we're talking about it.

Link.

That comment seems more in jest but I remember reading something once about Bakker and Stover agreeing about thematic intentions but disagreeing on execution in writing.

Blade of Tyshalle is turning into a great read though. Almost done. Probably burn through the other books soon, what with the fancy digital library, but I'm going to interject some of my other holiday purchases first - I've had a couple books on the go towards the end of the year that I'll list as I finish them but not count as this year's number but I'm really excited to read Pressfield's The Legend of Beggar Vance finally!

Halfway through Blade of Tyshalle, which I believe sci and Wert told me to follow through on a year ago and more. Stover has some... really unprecedented prose.

I really do wonder what Stover and Bakker disagreed about in terms of writing styles given that they tread some very similarly unsettled ground.

No commitments on my part but I'll try to be more diligent about recording what I read this year here :).

Wb, Cuttlefish. Love the posts.

Two thoughts.

I think Sorweel would've succeeded exactly as he saw it with Serwa killing him. Bakker did tell me "all bets are off" when he handed me the draft for TUC and I legit read that portion thinking it was real the first time.

Secondly, Kellhus arguably actually enacts his visions of Moenghus' takeover. The Ordeal *is* led to "salt and butchery," even though I would argue Kellhus did have "noble" intentions [and didn't manufacture the Ordeal's various crises]. Paved roads to hell and all that ;).

And then the cunny-loving dragon asserts that he devoured Emilidis. Who, additionally, "was cunny", whatever that's supposed to mean.

I never really did get the fan frustration with this. I doubt very much Bakker has spent any time on 4chan or its siblings variants.

Otherwise, there's a glossary entry or an interaction with Sorweel or Oinaral or some such that suggests Emilidis might just be MIA in the world.

Yeah the Nonmen in general were not to keen on Aporostic(?) practices.

Which I'm still interested in given Mimara's "miracle" against the Wight (I also really don't understand why people seem to think Mimara's first Chorae was "special"). I thought it pretty evident that she would see all Chorae as such with the Eye.

Lol, dragged me in momentarily.

After TUC and the Expanded Glossary, the evidence suggests that Emilidis is missing or dead and he was trying obsessively to create a Markless/Sorcerous Artifact? Also, that he was exocommunicated from a Mansion at some point for his work? (The latter assertion I'm less sure about.)

I think the level of incompetence, or else the genius of that product placement, is egregious on a good many people's parts. Especially the actors and actresses... really didn't notice?

EDIT: I haven't watched yet and, as I said, I'll probably binge it when it's done but they've really pissed on GRRM's work as far as I can tell - again the actors and actresses: you *really* didn't notice the dive in your scripts?

World-Soul and Kahiht (sp?) have some obvious one-to-one relationships to Hegel.

Drive-by interjection ;).

I'm surprised I haven't shared any links from this show.

Anyhow, this is one certain to appeal in different ways to Bakker fans:

- Beau Lotto - Why You See Differently When You Deviate

Much to wrestle with. I wish I had written down my thoughts when I first listened to it because I had a handful of quibbles.

Also, now that I think of it, I thought I had posted this one before but if not:

- David Eagleman - How Your Brain Makes Sense of the World (also have quibbles with this but you know me - the quibbler.)

Very nice, H. Kids thought it was neat too.

I always liked the story behind the Necrons.

Generally speaking, I think most of everything Bakker has ever said is either purposefully misleading (recent stuff in the last few years), or unaware of the specifics (older info from way back) which is now irrelevant or largely misleading. Regarding Serwe, whatever she was supposed to be, I think it was intended to be very clear by now. Thus, I think Serwe's whole thing was being the sympathetic catalyst which ends up uniting all of humanity against the consult. Yes, that's mundane and uninteresting, but I think that's all there is too it - things aren't always as complicated as we make them out to be.

Keep in mind his Serwe comments were largely as a rebuttal to the online stuff happening surrounding him at the time. I think Bakker has shown time and again a pretty extreme misunderstanding of the people he's talking to or trying to reach out too, and most probably (imo) the serwe comment was worded very poorly to begin with and is now taken out of context in the Earwa online noosphere.

Cue FB's Earwa's Original Sin commentary. Though, I personally think "something something pure ignorance" is more her narrative antecedent and I've always liked that "the reader has Serwe in their hands and Kellhus in their heads" (badly paraphrased) quote, as per those aforementioned out of text contemporary commentaries.

@Wilshire - i agree w/your comments re: Bakker. At this point i find him to be an intentionally undependable narrator of his own story in a lot of ways. Im sure he would tell me that my loss of faith in him would be his goal and that i am now better off.

Ill buy whatever, if anything, comes next but im much more neutral towards the author and thus the work.

Nice to see you around again, Rots. It would be nice to communicate in The Agora sometime, given my lack of time to post in the past two years :( (though, I'm working on it).

This really resonates with me, Rots. Similarly, I no longer completely trust Bakker as a story-teller, and, as you note, that's probably the position in which he wants to place his readers. It's a very modern, or perhaps even a modernist approach to fiction.

He claims to have avoided the postmodernist pitfalls a la Gene Wolfe, BFK, but I'm never sure.

General Earwa / Re: Inri Sejenus

Not false.

In-text Inrithism believes Sejenus ascended to the Nail from the Juterum (sp?) in Shimeh while, I believe, TTT Glossary suggests that he actually ascended somewhere in ruined Kyudea. Neither debate the ascension.
