I'm not to keen on the idea of their being more city-states. I think it would lead to an even greater fracturing of the world then what we already have. The internet would also be one of the biggest victims there as each city will be able to impose their own set of restrictions. How would business and travel work in such an environment?

Welcome to the Second Apocalypse, you Old Gnostic Fool (if I haven't welcomed you already).

I think the article is more discussing the implications of cities exercising a greater agency in the modern world and what that means. I believe it even starts by discussing the fact that certain American cities are going to continuing working internationally to develop "green" innovations despite Trump pulling from the Paris Agreement (showy as that was).

This is an interesting article/view, but I think it'll only go so far and Nation/States will continue. Russian and American imperialism have been too successful to be deterred now ( simply too many native citizens effected by their encroachment don't resist - not all, of course, as is the case in Middle East ).

America may appear to be heading for civil war given some states talking secession, but we're addicted to climate controlled environments and wouldn't risk that ... and besides, who has time for revolution when there's a new episode of < insert popular tv show title > on tonight.
It's me, Dave, open up, I've got the stuff

The revolution won't be televised?

Years ago, I was working on a short story where the underlying premise was that profits of international corporations exceeded the GDP of first world countries.

Plenty of possibilities for the human future. It can get weirder.
