Title: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: Madness on May 13, 2014, 11:29:50 am
EDIT (Jan 23/15): Hi all.

New, hopefully very last, update on TSACast link: https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast

EDIT: Hi all. The link that seems to be working for everyone is:

TSACasts (http://justcast.herokuapp.com/shows/mike-h-second-apocalypse-podcast/audioposts.rss)

But now
... And again... iTunes link ;D:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-second-apocalypse/id1127550089?mt=2

Original message:

Hi everyone. I realize this is premature and that "Podcast" is a title to refer to audioshows speficially released via iTunes system (which hopefully this and future episodes also will be).

However, Episode #1 is coming 8). Pretty proud of our discussion and considering that I'm listening to it for the second time since we recorded last night I'll say it's pretty entertaining.

Just getting it cleaned up a bit (if it needs - as there are a couple moments of technical difficulties).

Content is coming ;D!

EDIT:

And I will make two notations now:

- A couple questions... (http://forum.three-seas.com/topics/543) - White Lord/Zombie Three-Seas thread I mentioned.
- I know I'm wrong about the time frame of the TPB comment concerning Ishual being done in Ch. 1 (I said two months ago but it might have been closer to the original Ch.1 Excerpt release - I will endeavour to find it).

I still haven't decided if I'm going to listen to it. I probably should, but there's something about hearing my own voice that's unsettling (weirdly enough I don't mind being recorded on video).

I think we all suffer degrees of that, FB. I think it sounds fine, though. I mostly appreciate the laughs. But I also think I'm overly-impressed with us for being productive and delivering on some entertainment to the starving TSA crowd.

Sounds very interesting, but who's participating?

If you mean in the podcast we already recorded, it was just Madness, Wilshire, and myself. But in future casts, anyone who wants to be involved is welcome! We'll definitely have "guests" in future entries.

Community generated content ;D. I think three is a good number of people, whoever participates, if it is one of the mod team who "host." It will always take some effort for any three people to coordinate.

Looking forward to it.

Perhaps Bakker could guest star in a future episode.  ;)

TSACast #1 - May 12/14: Francis Buck, Wilshire, Madness (http://justcast.herokuapp.com/shows/387/audioposts.rss)

EDIT: Hi all. The link that seems to be working for everyone is:

http://justcast.herokuapp.com/shows/387/audioposts

But now... iTunes link ;D:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/second-apocalypse-podcast/id878613771

Original message:

I'm still working on getting it into the iTunes podcast library and it's my hope that Bakker will link the TSACast on TPB eventually.

I'm also learning how to do this and there seems to be a lot to go over in order to distribute effectively. Apologies for any issues anyone has accessing, streaming, or downloading the first episode.

Also, forgive us that this is our first TSACast. There was probably some minor editing to be done but I think the moments of distortion are basically irreparable (but I don't know anything about audio files). I think the three of us are just excited to get it out there.

Also, also... there is much profanity ;).

Cheers. Hope everyone likes the attempt. I know I had fun making it - especially as I've got the downs hard right now so I was surprised that the conversation could pick me up so much. I basically just forget it's us talking and enjoy the fact that someone, anyone, is talking TSA online.

Thanks to Wilshire and FB for being a part of it.

As of this posting, that link doesn't work.

Also, we need to work on our "signing off" thing, as I found that incredibly lame (as noted in the podcast lmao).

Otherwise it went as well as one might expect of a couple of guys who have never met, talking for the first time, with almost no plan and/or experience in the ways of public broadcasting.

Maybe we'll work on the profanity next time.... or not. We could probably bleep out the cursing if it was offensive.

The link didn't work for me (I'm on a Mac if that makes a difference), but it brought up a page of code.  I just copied this line out of it, pasted it into the address bar, and magic.

http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/y4gz9q7xunt9kxy/tsacast%201%2C%20may%2012%2C%2014.mp3 (http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/y4gz9q7xunt9kxy/tsacast%201%2C%20may%2012%2C%2014.mp3)

Thoroughly enjoyed it.  Made an hour of my work morning go by like that (is there an emoticon for snapping fingers?)  Thanks you three for going through the effort and making it happen.  I laughed, I cried, I hurled.  And what profanity?  My wife is British, and I don't even hear those words as being profane anymore.  Like everyday conversation 'round this joint.  lol

Enjoyed it as well.

Between Madness and Wilshire I couldn't tell who's who though. Both have similar voices to the point where I'm starting to think I'm not the only one who has a bunch of alts on this forum.  :P

Also, why not mention this on Westeros the forum that shall not be mentioned?

Does this link work for everybody: http://justcast.herokuapp.com/shows/387/audioposts ?

It takes a little longer to load but it should work.

I promise when I have a little more time I will take some solid time and work this out.

I'm the one that thinks Meppa is Moe. I can't really say I'm 100% on anything, but I do believe it's a strong possibility.

The regularity of these things is still being discussed. Maybe the community would like to have some input.

Instead of us just rambling on and on, we could potentially set up themes for each "episode". Maybe people could put in ideas here, or in another topic, about what they'd like us to talk about. For myself, I don't know if the random grab-bag style is more or less accessible, but it might be easier to search for specific topics if we set it up like that from the start. But we will probably be too lazy to do that ourselves (come on community!)

Also, as mentioned, if there are those of you out there that would like to participate in the future, please let your interest be known (post it here or send it in a PM). FB and I will definitely need someone else to participate since Madness won't be able to join in the discussion for a while.

Any input on time/length? This first one was about an hour, which seemed to go by rather quickly when recording but I'm not so sure the listeners will feel the same. If we do shorter, more streamlined versions we'll probably try to stick with one or two topics so we can pair it down to 20-30 minutes each. That said, judging on how long it took to sync the schedules of 3 people living in the same timezone, I imagine if/when others would like to participate, scheduling will be even more difficult. When we record, we could do hour+ (depending on personal time restraints) and split it into shorter blocks before we push it out. That way we could stagger the release and record once a month but post a short episode 2-4 times a month.

If you're going to do a "Bakker and women" episode then I think you should get someone from the Westeros board who has been vocal in his/her criticism in the past. Perhaps Kalbear or Lyanna Stark. Supposing that they would agree or have the time to do it.

I'm the one that thinks Meppa is Moe. I can't really say I'm 100% on anything, but I do believe it's a strong possibility.

I'm pretty sure I say "100%." But that truly is just a habit of speech I've fallen into, not anything concrete: speculation only.

*slow golf clap    Very nice gentlemen.  I mean, this truly is a red letter day for this community.  Although, I'm not sure with what regularity you're planning on releasing future installments

Nice job guys.  Very...... memorable.

Much appreciated. I hope the community uses it as a springboard thrive and self-organize that next little step.

The regularity of these things is still being discussed. Maybe the community would like to have some input.

To be honest, I don't see us turning away any sort of involvement. I invite people to write whole episode itineraries and submit them to the thread (or PM) should they feel the compelling interest.

As I mentioned to Wilshire in Quorum, FB's original thought when I suggested a TSACast was to make it about the membership here (as there is such a diversity and we all have much to learn from each other). So guests are key to my part of the vision (which exists and manifests by all our (non)involvement). Also, more focused and less freeranging. Now I would never cut out all the tangenting (as it is clearer a portion of zest and lifeblood here) and Wilshire, FB, and I were lucky in that we've interact alot on the forum and we more or less fall into a comfortable flow as the episode carried on. But we burned through my little rubric pretty quickly and it would be really nice if it followed more of a central theme. One of my original conceptions was to pick a handful of threads here on the forum that are dictated by a chosen theme and simply explore those in detail.

Actually, I can already feel my brain bending towards a number of suggestions that aren't plot related.

But unrelated thoughts:

- Also, plugs! Wilshire/FB (volunteered ;)?) will likely have to play host to the immediate future, though I will definitely be harassing and haranguing them and the community into engaging. But whoever does should mention that www.rscottbakker.com is where to buy books and www.second-apocalypse.com is where to go to discuss the series. You'd be surprised how suddenly there will be a population of people who've only ever listened to the TSACast who have never been online with us...

- A more canned intro/signoff that passes the Wilshire Annoyance Meter ;) (which is much measured and many practical).

Any input on time/length? This first one was about an hour, which seemed to go by rather quickly when recording but I'm not so sure the listeners will feel the same. If we do shorter, more streamlined versions we'll probably try to stick with one or two topics so we can pair it down to 20-30 minutes each. That way we could stagger the release and record once a month but post a short episode 2-4 times a month.

I think 45min would be a great mark. An hour goes by so fast for everyone, I think. Don't split up a single episode :P.

If you're going to do a "Bakker and women" episode then I think you should get someone from the Westeros board who has been vocal in his/her criticism in the past. Perhaps Kalbear or Lyanna Stark. Supposing that they would agree or have the time to do it.

Lol - oh, please, please, let me be on that one, Wilshire/FB. Don't do all the interesting ones without me :P. Though, there always is time for Round 2 topics after TUCs release.

EDIT:

Picking through the Almanac would make excellent itinerary items!

Madness you can take my spot on the bakker/misogyny episode, if ever we do one. Its not that I have an issue with the topic, just how it always turns out. Its a political debate, which always tend towards the same direction (and its never to a point of resolution).

For some reason it is a popular topic, so by all rights we should talk about it, but I would rather push it off into the future. Its a polarizing topic, and I'd rather wait on irritating listeners until we have have a couple of followers (if we get that many).

Based on the top 10 most posted topics:
Art, no god, Meppa is X, excerpt chapter 1, sorcery, who destroyed the dunyain monastery.

Based on views (not in top 10 posts):
Inverse Fire, Dunyain and Nonmen

The hill where Kellhus makes his last speech is not the same as the one where the Old Prophet knelt or sacrificed his son or whatever Madness was referring to (as far as I can tell.)

Quote from: WLW, p769, Canadian paperback
"Swaranul was a place holy to the ancient High Norsirai, for it was here that the Gods had come to the chieftains of their many tribes and granted them tenure for all the lands within a thousand leagues."

Whereas Angeshrael, the Burnt Prophet, knelt before "Husyelt at the food of Mount Eshki" (TTT, p512, Canadian paperback).

If and when I participate again, I will make sure that my books are with me. I was at my sister's for the evening :(.

Hey guys,

Listened to the full Podcast last night - great stuff! I was making gentle notes while watching. Will put a more detailed response here once I have finished work for the day!

I would also be happy to guest on one - might be interesting to have an English accent on the podcast - I found some of your/my pronunciation discrepancies hilarious - although you 3 seemed to agree on them so probably my own English sounding interpretation.

Gentle and/or aggressive notes are appreciated, I look forward to it. Also, since that was your inaugural post, welcome aboard. How did you hear about the TSAcast?

As for pronunciation, I tried to adapt my own interpretations quickly to keep things moving forwards, so I don't even necessarily agree with everything I was even speaking... But there were some words that I held onto my own pronunciations. I often feel like I'm brutalizing the words, where others dance around them and make them sound pretty. I doubt there will be a community concencus any time soon, though there is a thread dedicated to this subject located here: http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=996.0

Heard about the Podcast over on the westeros forums. Posted a message to Madness offering to help with any technical/hosting as I work in IT - the hosting server you are using at the moment is not great and I could sort something out for that. I would also be happy to speak on the Podcast - get an English accent on there!

I joined westeros for recs and to post in the Bakker threads after reading all the old Three Seas threads I could find (the White Lord and Mithfanion onces on the Q&A were good.) At the time this site was being revamped I think so only just started coming back on here. Same name for me over on westeros and also roamersandlurkers - SilentRoamer :) I have seen you/Madness/FB and others posting over the last few months and have been following your threads a while before joining in.

Maybe change my name to SilentStalker. Haha

Hey SR, glad you found us here. Thanks for the kudos (I look forward to your review :) ). I tried to respond to your PM on Westeros but apparently their server is overloaded at the moment.

By the way, you basically just voluntold yourself for the next TSACast :). I want to schedule the next one as soon as possible - aiming for two and half, three weeks-ish from now.

As for pronunciation, I tried to adapt my own interpretations quickly to keep things moving forwards, so I don't even necessarily agree with everything I was even speaking...

Makes you a brilliant communicator. But I definitely pronounced everything as I pronounce it - I'm not sure anyone noticed but I actually voiced a different phrasing of Psuhke in the Inaugural.

Protip - you can change your display name without changing your profile name. Go to Profile -> Account Settings. At the top it shows username, and just under that is "Name". You can change this to anything you would like without changing your username. This allows you to pick different names on a whim without going through the account creation process.

Great to have you here SilentStalker, glad our pittance of a podcast allowed at least 1 user to come forth.

As for pronunciation, I tried to adapt my own interpretations quickly to keep things moving forwards, so I don't even necessarily agree with everything I was even speaking...

Lying to me via PMs is fine, but I'll not have you be spreading such rumors to the community.

Hello all,

Well I enjoyed the Podcast very much. Nice to hear introductions from FB, Wilshire and Madness. Ill make a few comments myself before the review.

I read TDTCB back in 2004 at quite a youngish age (certainly in terms of my reading as I had only read a few dozen fantasy books at this point) I can truthfully say most of the philosophy and general Bakker musings went over my head - I think I skimmed a lot of the material so got an overall feel for it. In 2006 I then read TWP and TTT and my interest in the series was definitely revived. At the time I could find nothing online about Bakker and none of my friends had read Bakker. I loaned him to few friends only to get him back a few weeks later with puzzled looks and complaints about the complexity of the prose.

I completely forgot about the series until last year when I noticed WLW and TJE. Bought both and re-read the whole series. This is not the first time I have re-read a series, but it is the first time a re-read has given me more than an initial read. The layers of revelation were just astounding. Since my second read I feel like a complete Bakker nut and the TSA is one of, if not my favourite series of all time.

So that's how I discovered TSA. So on with my review:

Positives:
The content was very good and flowed quickly between topics.
No single person took over too much of the time.
Very balanced dialogue with speculations clearly noted.
Good references to material

Negatives:
Although the conversation flowed well the structure was not clear. Personally I would focus on a single topic per podcast - the topics are so intertwined you will end up touching multiple topics but setting a clear agenda will help - especially when people want to go back and listen to previous podcasts.
I thought the Podcast was a little bit too long, I think cutting by a 3rd would be productive. 40 minutes Podcast in total which can be broken down 5 minutes intro, 35 for content and 5 for close down and discussion of next podcast topic - linking the podcasts and informing the next topic will keep people listening.
Although references were used to good effect it would be more efficient to ensure Kindle versions are available as well as any maps necessary. I was laughing when you guys were placing the Ordeals current location and trying to name the mountain! Maybe I can help with this as I have all version in Paperback and also in .mobi
Also be careful when using Spoilers for other novels - Dune is next on my May reading list!

Trivial:
Great to think of Moenghus arc as potentially unfinished. Love that I am not alone or crazy for loving Cnaiur.

So overall I though the content was good - I really enjoyed listening to you guys. I would be happy to be in the next Podcast with you three illustrious gentlemen.

In the meantime let me look into an alternative hosting solution for the Podcasts.

Great to actually see a Bakker community as I primarily joined westeros for the Bakker threads.

Well i guess you found your place, then, SilentRoamer. This is TSA paradise, so to speak. A really open and very well read/educated bunch of people here (and i hope it does not sound pompous or arrogant... ;D ).

Backt to topic - I had to listen to it...at least for a bit. Unfortunately i had not the time to listen to it all but i was able to listen to 13 minutes or around that.

Two things that i just have to note:

- OMG, you're all real TSA newbs ;D (your stories how you came to the series were interesting and for me, a bit surprising, given how well versed in TSA you are now)

- I'm sorry FB, but you sound like the clichée american ;D Hope you don't take offense...but i as a foreign language dude if i had to point someone to how i imagine an american sounds, you would be totally it ;)

Anyway...just some nonsensical rambling on my part. Cool that you guys are pushing to add to the TSA material out there in the world wide web.

Btw i kind of agree with SR here, an hour (or even longer) is quite a hurdle to take. IMO it is beyond the "oh what the heck, let us just listen to one of those and see what it is...."-impulse. This is important if you want to lure in some new fans and faces (no pun intended ;) ). I guess us hardcore addicted you already have. So consider to continue with some shorter episodes.

Cheers, SR. Again, welcome to the Second Apocalypse.

So on with my review:

Positives:

Thanks. I feel like FB really carried us and I know for my part it was really easy to prompt some of the more interesting comparisons (Gnosticism/Earwa or Dune/TSA) based on our previous interactions together on the forum (which makes another reason "by members, for members" is so enticing.

Thoughts:

- Agreed on the more concise topic/theme itinerary. I think I've already voiced my thoughts on this above.
- Same goes for the time length. I believe Wilshire or I suggested 45min?
- The community can give us structure and decide what is best :). We're knee-deep in process right now. We all have the potential to shape this future.
- I mentioned up thread, and obviously I consider it a point of some pride, but when I partake again I will not do so without my books nearby. I don't need no stiinkeeen kindle to leverage my Erratic memories :P.

Once again, yay, SR! I'm going to copy and paste your PM and reply to it on our system here (I mean via PM, not in-thread).

I think, SR, you, Wilshire, and FB (and probably me as a hovering moderator or something) should start planning a date.

EDIT:

Sorry, Kellais, Wilshire just reminded me I missed your portion.

Two things that i just have to note:

- OMG, you're all real TSA newbs ;D (your stories how you came to the series were interesting and for me, a bit surprising, given how well versed in TSA you are now)

Lol - we cannot all claim your long-storied history, Kellais ;).

- I'm sorry FB, but you sound like the clichée american ;D Hope you don't take offense...but i as a foreign language dude if i had to point someone to how i imagine an american sounds, you would be totally it ;)

:P

Anyway...just some nonsensical rambling on my part. Cool that you guys are pushing to add to the TSA material out there in the world wide web.

Btw i kind of agree with SR here, an hour (or even longer) is quite a hurdle to take. IMO it is beyond the "oh what the heck, let us just listen to one of those and see what it is...."-impulse. This is important if you want to lure in some new fans and faces (no pun intended ;) ). I guess us hardcore addicted you already have. So consider to continue with some shorter episodes.

45min seems better, yes?

Sorry Feanara, I missed your post earlier.

Enjoyed it as well.

Between Madness and Wilshire I couldn't tell who's who though. Both have similar voices to the point where I'm starting to think I'm not the only one who has a bunch of alts on this forum.  :P
If you listen real close you can hear slight accents. Madness has a couple classic Canadian pronunciations, and at least I can tell Francis is from a different State than myself. But I was surprised as well how similar we all sounded as well, though obviously my voice was the one you found the least jarring.

Also, why not mention this on Westeros the forum that shall not be mentioned?

I don't have any real disdain for Westeros, I would just prefer the entire Bakker online fan community to exist in this place rather than spread out over 2+ sites. By all means, plug the TSAcast and this forum all you want, wherever/whenever you can. I'd do it myself, but I don't have an account over yonder ;).

@ Madness - lol...yeah...long storied history...now i feel old  ;D Maybe that'd be a good custom name for me... The True Old Name  ;) And yes, i think 45 min would be closer to the "let us just listen to it right now"-impulse.
On the other hand it is difficult to time such things that perfectly. I guess if you have to chose between topically well rounded and "closed" and short but not much happened...then that is not really a choice .... so yeah, better to err on the former side than on the latter.

I was thinking the typical podcast could stay at the 45 minute + mark, but we could also hyper focus on certain topics and keep them to 15 - 30 minutes which would enable us to do more of them.  That was more along the lines of what I was thinking when I volunteered for a future podcast.

There is no way my son and my babies momma would let me get my nerd on for over an hour!

lol GJ we'll work it out. Some can be longer, others shorter. We can even pre-record intro and outro. Also, we plan on showcasing each new participant like we did with this one, and that could even be recorded separately.

Splicing together simple audio files is not particularly difficult, so if you still want to do this and an hour or even 45 minutes is too much, we can pare it down to small chunks.

TSAcast #1 probably took 2 hours to do. We spent like 30 minutes discussing the plan before we started recording, and talked about it for a bit afterwards. If you can only swing 30 minutes at max, we'll do something different, or record over multiple sessions. We'll get you in, no worries.

I'm a fan of long podcasts. Not necessarily Joe Rogan-long, but I love a good hour+. I get that some people don't have the time, though.

Have you thought of doing a book club-type thing where you discuss each book chapter by chapter (once you exhaust some of the broader topics)?

I was actually thinking of covering the last chapter of each book in some way?

Also, the fact that names are reused for different characters throughout history intrigues me.  Might there be a topic of discussion on how these characters relate and what it could mean for the overall story?

Just a couple of the ideas that I have been kicking around in the cranium.

I love that you guys are doing a podcast. Every few months I'd do a Goggle search looking for any podcasts discussing Bakker and the only good ones were the Luke Burrage reviews along with SFAudio ones he did too.

Anyway, since you're just starting out and you're the only Bakker-cast, why not just forget about worrying about time constraints until you start pumping them out on the regular?
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: Wilshire on June 19, 2014, 12:28:09 pm
There is a whole lot of things to consider. One issue is that not everyone involved in making the podcast can set aside a whole afternoon/evening to make these.

Another idea is to get a list of topics and just record us talking about them, and then later split up the audio file into more easily digestible chunks. We could upload both, so people could maybe search podcasts by topics, or sit down and listen to an hour+ depending on how they can stand.

Thanks for the input kellykellhus
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)

Thanks, kellykellhus.

I think the reason time-constraints come up right away is because we shocked ourselves a little bit burning through our little itinerary so fast in the episode. Now granted, FB, Wilshire, and I had previously had interaction in Quorum (and I think the following couple episodes featuring different guests will benefit from previous Quorum melding as well) and FB managed to hit on unscripted first-episode gold with Gnostic philosophy and Dune.

We just want to make sure that we get it right. It is good to know that there is a dedicated, if small, fan base that just want to hear us freestyle some Bakker :).

Madness you can take my spot on the bakker/misogyny episode, if ever we do one. Its not that I have an issue with the topic, just how it always turns out. Its a political debate, which always tend towards the same direction (and its never to a point of resolution).

Same here, personally, I would not like to cast on this topic.  Feel out of my depth.

I will endeavor to get the original recording program working again for future episodes (as what occurred is I thought my secondary program was recording both my audio track and my mic track separately when in fact the episode was being recording entirely through my microphone :().

Regardless, great content. I had a lot of fun making it.

In my haste and tunnel-vision of doing the second episode, I forgot to do plugs.

I decided when I was doing the intro/outro, I wanted to do something special with the music and reference something greater so the intro and outro this episode were pulled from Bakker's blog-list where he has some music that he writes to. So Hearts of Moenghus featured Fehu - Wardruna.

Very interesting listen, I've been curious about how the Cishaurim react to Chorae, it seems odd that for all the mention of how it kills them as well as anyone who bears the mark, no one comments that it kills them any differently than turning them to salt.  The only first hand account I could find was when Proyas throws his Chorae at the Cishaurim in Shimeh where it's described as "the saffron figure plummeted like a sodden flag."  Almost every other time a sorcerer is killed by Chorae there's some mention of them turning into salt statues, it's definitely suspicious that's it's not remarked upon when Cishaurim die to Chorae.

Also, is it generally accepted that Moenghus is still alive or is that more of a crackpot theory?  The first time I read TTT I didn't question it but reading that part again it sounds more like a description of the Chorae breaking some type of possession spell rather than killing a sorcerer.  Although it could just be the way the Cishaurim react to Chorae I suppose.

Zadok, I think that's a huge question, Cishaurim + chorae, and I don't know what the hell could be going on.

That's a really cool idea about the chorae breaking a possession spell--do you have more thoughts on that?

I think that Moenghus is still around and I think that that might be in the crackpot territory.  :)  I just can't buy that Moenghus spent all that time just to make a mistake at the end.  It's a set up!  I can think of all kinds of ways he faked his own death AND it would be the Dunyain way--rule from the shadows!

Admittedly there's not a whole lot of evidence for it, more of a feeling I got.  The description of the talents and limits of Moenghus reminded me of when Kellhus was thinking about what Akka told him Aurang would be capable of when he possessed Esmi.  It would also provide an alternate explanation to Kellhus' assumption of why "Mallahet" was so weak in terms of the Water but so strong in other areas.  Also, the way he says he needs Cnaiur's strength I believe he may have been planning on possessing him before he Chorae'd him.  Maybe when you're dealing with ensouled creatures it's not just a matter of being able to posses anyone you need some kind of consent or at least a deep connection with the person.
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: mrganondorf on July 17, 2014, 05:10:14 pm
Well, I like your idea a lot.  I can't get over the notion that Moenghus is still alive and controlling everything from the shadows.  What better way to stay hidden than to create a Mallahet to be your front.  Meppa is also a front?  Pehaps Mallahet, Meppa, and Kellhus all suffer from the same delusion of being free agents.
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: Zadok on July 17, 2014, 06:23:31 pm
I don't think that Meppa is Dunyain he doesn't seem to wield that much influence over Fanayal from what we've seen.  Although if his amnesia story is true maybe the Chorae breaking the possession spell messed up his consciousness/soul somehow and it is Moenghus but he doesn't know it.

I was riffing off MG when he said that the Sranc really inform TAE (where everything is about the Sranc, really). But I was trying, inarticulately, to make the connection that in re-reading PON, I was boggled by any of the Omnipresent POVs where men war with men... THERE ARE SRANC TO THE NORTH! In that way, the Sranc always informed my re-reading experience.

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, June 2005 (http://forum.three-seas.com/posts/4343)
Hello Shryke. Welcome to the board!

Save for some contact in Jek at the headwaters of the River Sayut, the Xuihianni, the Tribe left behind at the Breaking of the Gates, are entirely confined to Eanna.

Uroborian circle is fleshed out some in TTT, at least how the draft stands now. Sorcery all comes down to semantics, meanings, and practitioners of the Aporos specialize in aporetic, or paradoxical meanings.

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, May 2005 (http://forum.three-seas.com/posts/5839)
The Aporos is something I want to flesh out further in future books. The basic idea is this: the Quya first developed the Aporos in the prosecution of their own intercine wars, but it was quickly forbidden. The arrival of the Inchoroi allowed several renegade Quya to pursue their sorcerous interrogations, leading to the production of tens of thousands of Chorae, which were used throughout the Cuno-Inchoroi wars.

The Aporos possesses a contradictory, or negative, semantics, and as such is able only to undo the positive semantics of things like the Gnosis, Psukhe, Anagogis - even the Daimos. Aporetic Cants have no other effect. Salting is actually a kind of side effect. I would rather wait until TTT comes out before discussing the metaphysics - it has to do with the Mark.

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, June 2005 (http://forum.three-seas.com/posts/6500)
Good questions, all. Personally, I've always worried that the Chorae may come across as too ad hoc, as mere narrative conveniences that allow a happy (but not very credible) balance between the sorcerous and the non-sorcerous. But in point of fact, that role came after - the Chorae developed independently. From the outset, I've looked at each of the sorcerous branches in linguistic terms, as practices where language commands, rather than conforms to, reality. So the Anagogis turns on the semantic power of figurative analogies, the Gnosis turns on the semantic power of formal generalizations, the Psukhe turns on speaker intention, and so on. And much as language undoes itself in paradoxes, sorcery can likewise undo itself. The Aporos is this 'sorcery of paradox,' where the meanings that make sorcery possible are turned in on themselves to generate what might be called 'contradiction fields.'

Since the metaphysics of sorcery actually plays a significant role in TTT, it would probably be better to postpone a more in depth discussion until then.

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, Aug 2004
The Chorae are actually sorcerous artifacts (of something called the 'Aporos'), manufactured prior to the Cuno-Inchoroi Wars (by Quya defectors) as a way for the Inchoroi to counter the sorcery of the Nonmen. The script inscribed across each embodies a contradiction that unravels the semantics of all known Cants - even those of the Aporos!

Bakker's Comment on Inrau being Damned:

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, March 2006 (http://forum.three-seas.com/posts/10699)
This question really morphed!

Yes, Inrau IS damned. And this is the basis of his conversion. There's always hope that the scriptures just overlooked some kind of loophole, or that by praying real hard...

Part of the problem is that we see Inrau primarily through Achamian, and if you think about it, Achamian tends not to go into the details of his damnation - or that of any of those he loves. For instance, why doesn't he ever wonder about Inrau's soul? This omission becomes more and more explicit the more implicated Achamian becomes in Kellhus's world. Think of TTT. I wanted this to be the one thing he cannot grasp without the protection of vague intellectual abstraction.

EDIT (Fer Finish):

I'm always amazed at my brain's ability to keep track of all this stuff.

If I missed any links/follow-up information from the episode, let me know.

I am not sure what I think on that one.  I just feel that there is something to the map circles, and should be discussed at more length.

The "seeding with humans" thought came to me since there are two on the east side of the Kayarsus.

Maybe worth noting that that one north west of golgotterath isn't even in the maps in the books.

Other than Golgotterath, none of the other circles seem to be in meaningful places, or at least not that we know of. If they do indeed turn out to be something, then I doubt we'll learn about it until TSTSNBN.

Finally had the time to listen to casts 2 and 3.  Again, thoroughly enjoyed hearing others with my relatively rare condition (Bakkeritis Adiectio) talking about my favorite books.  :D  Thanks to all you guys for taking the time to put these together.

Although I disagree on the pronunciations.  lol

Also, cheers for the shout out in cast 2, guys.  I'm blushing.

It is pretty entertaining to talk about TSA for an hour +. Technical difficulties for an hour before the cast lol, and probably another hour + of chat after.

So I/we are thinking about making a youtube channel and hosting the TSAcasts that way.

Anyone care to weigh in? Also, if anyone is familiar with the process, or the monetization of the channel/videos via youtuve, your thoughts would be appreciated.

I wish I had some insights on the inner workings to offer but I just hope you guys make more of them. I also think YouTube would be s great move as it would be easier to curate, easier for us to listen to, and you could showcase some of our community's wonderful artwork, all at the same time.

Ahh, good point. Could make thumbnails out of Somna's art, or slideshows, and have them run on the screen as we speak. Not sure how easy/difficult that would be to add, but its a great idea.

I'm glad you like them, maybe you want to participate? Always looking for new members to spotlight.

And obviously, as per my last post, someone needs to suggest a thematic intent for #4 ;).

Have you looked into Soundcloud for podcast hosting? For example (https://soundcloud.com/guardianbookspodcast).

For topic ideas, is it possible to have an episode that focuses on the Prologue of Book I? (For that you'd need Locke though, don't know if anyone else has obsessed over it as much.)

Other suggestions,
1. The No-God (Podcast has had no NG discussions so far, right?)
2. Celmomian Prophecy (or the possibility of prophecies in general)
3. Cuno-Inchoroi Wars
4. The Judging Eye

Things I could find about the WLW. Probably not what you were looking for.

p376 WLW US
Esmi and WLW
"What is your name?
Issiral
Issiral... she repeated struggling to recall the meaning of the Shigeki word. "Fate?" she asked frowning and smiling. "Who named you this?"
"my Mother"

p376
Esmi: "I thought Narindar were devotees of the Four-Horned Brother ... "
WLW: Devotion? The Brother cares not for our cares, only that we murder in His Name"

p370
Imhailas: "You must understand, all of this is kind of prayer for them" ... "The penultimate ... act ... does not stand apart form the acts that feed into it. In their eyes, this very discussion is an integral component of the ... the ..."
"The assassination," Esmenet said.

Awesome! We don't have a lot of volunteers so the wait list is short. You can be on the next one if you'd like, once we figure out when and where. PM's will be coming your way.

As per #4, it was recorded but not released. I did not participate in it, but I do believe the sound quality was low, and topics wandered a bit (also maybe one or two beers to many ;) ... did you hear the beer bottle *clinking* in the background of #5 :P ). Its locked in the Coffers, for now, and it nost currently planned to be released.

Well as always I was sufficiently baked but enjoyed participating in the cast as always! Hopefully the love of the Halfling leaf served to blow the cobwebs from the mind rather than a dulling of the wits.

Having been in a few of the casts now I am more than happy to stand aside for the next few (assuming we get some more participants) as I would love to know other peoples thoughts and opinions. Myself/Madness/Wilshire/Garet Jax/Mrganandorf/Francis Buck have discussed a lot of content at length with each other (on the forums/during casts/general Skype chats) and I would love to discuss/hear the perspectives of other members of the fandom.

Great job everyone - lets keep the casts rolling.

Though we have missed about a month now, Thursdays are typically skype day.  We might have to work out a new time, but if you send me/Madness a skype account we'll add you onto the list.

I likely can'd do this weekend, but we now have a small group who have said they would participate, so we should really get going, maybe even this weekend if the other's are available (though everyone says they need advanced notice, it seems that spontaneous casts have worked often enough). Evenings EST (GMT -5) are typically when we do this stuff, but its not terribly convenient for anyone :P.

Saturday, Bolivar?

Traditionally, I put the onus on newcomers to decide content :P. Hirtius/Pansa wants to either follow with the Almanac and do a chapter by chapter breakdown or, possibly as GJ put it, do a Cast per book.

But MG was passionate about hearts and Moenghus the Elder and it was great fodder for him and FB on Cast #2.

How about we break down the Knife of Many Hands? That way we talk about something topical and there's a lot there we could branch off to. We can probably work something out for anyone who hasn't read it.

Alrighty - TSACast #8 Notes

Yes, unfortunately, Cast #8 (https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast/tsacast-8-apr-815-ancient-random-things). For posterity:

- Cast #4 was GJ, SR, and I. On playback, I decided that SR's mic flares are uncomfortable to listen to. I've tried and tried to edit it without eventually reducing the overall sound quality. If anyone ever reads this and has some audio-editing know-how, get in touch.

- Cast #5: Bolivar, GJ, FB, and I. Unfortunately, FB was recording and dropped out. There's about forty minutes of Cast; Bolivar's introduction and some of The Knife of Many Hands: Part 1 discussion.

- Cast #6: Bolivar, GJ, SR, and I. Unfortunately, GJ was recording and dropped out. There's about a half hour of Cast; Bolivar's (second, shorthand) introduction and some of The Knife of Many Hands: Part 1 discussion.

- We also have three or four PreCast/AfterCast recordings, which we are burying in the Coffers with these other Casts. At some arbitrary time (probably after we've continued to accumulate and professionalize enough of our Casts), we're going to release these LostCasts.

TSACast #8 was a fun time, we had lots of laughs, and some great general SFF discussion in the AfterCast. Thanks again to geoffrobro for joining in and to SR and Wilshire for being regularly awesome ;). Sorry for the cutting out - much of it we didn't hear in recording, though some of it we did.

TSACast #8 Notes:

- Malazan Book of the Fallen (http://www.amazon.ca/The-Malazan-Empire-Book-Fallen-ebook/dp/B00HL0MA3W) - Just in case anyone else doesn't know.

- Duskweaver/Inchoroi (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=887.0) thread that kept coming up throughout the Cast.

- Halaroi quote I couldn't find all episode:

Quote
Nonmen: The Nonmen call themselves ji'cûnû roi, "the People of Dawn," for reasons they can no longer remember. (They call Men j'ala roi, "the People of Summer," because they burn so hot and pass so quickly.)

We were all a little wrong on that one, I think.

- Ah, we attributed the Ark cubit measurements to Duskweaver, I believe. Right thread, wrong person. Somnambulist (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=887.msg17618#msg17618), however, measured out the Ark for us :D:

We're actually given the exact dimensions of the Ark in TTT (kindle version about 47% in) as this:  3000 cubits long, 500 cubits wide and 300 cubits deep.  The standard definition of a cubit is the length from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger.  The book says that Nil'Giccas ordered the measuring of the Ark, and since Bakker stated that on average the Nonmen we're 6 feet tall, the Nonman cubit should be around 18 inches in length.  So with that in mind, the Ark should be about 4500 feet long (not quite a mile), 750 feet wide and 450 feet deep.  It is also stated as being buried into the ground about two-thirds of its entire length (2000 cubits or 3000 feet).

- Ganus the Blind quote, Wilshire mentioned; from Locke's Chapter Headers (WLW) (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=7.0):

Quote
Skies are upended, poured as milk into the tar of night.  Cities become pits of fire.  The last of the wicked stand with the last of the righteous, lamenting the same woe.  One Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, they shall be called, for this is their tally, the very number of doom.
—ANONYMOUS, THE THIRD REVELATION OF GANUS THE BLIND

- Wracu thread (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=450.0); Wütteat - Mechanical vs. Undead vs. Whatever.

- I apparently had dyslexia while reading the quote about Inchoroi creating Wracu:

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p633
Wracu: Immense, fire-spitting, winged repetilian monstrosities created by the Inchoroi during the Cûno-Inchoroi Wars to destroy the Nonmen Quya, then subsequently welded by the No-God during the Apocalypse. Very few are thought to have survived.
.

- Ciögli and Nonmen growing commentary:

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p544
Cûno-Inchoroi Wars: With his bare hands, Ciögli the Mountain, the strongest of the Ishroi, broke the neck of Wutteät the Black, the Father of Dragons.

The Four Revelations (http://):
Quote
As Ciogli makes a bastion of the Father of Dragons, his shouts ringing from his cauldron helm, Bashrag slumping from the arc of his hammer.

The False Sun (https://rsbakker.wordpress.com/stories/the-false-sun/):
Quote
He [Titirga] had stepped forward as he spoke, coming to a halt directly before the Hero-Mage and his legendary wrath. Something in the man’s height and proportion made him [Shaeönanra] think of the Nonmen heros, and how they never ceased growing.

I couldn't find any remaining portion of the mention in Four Revelations nor in the comments.

- Character Heights (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=743.msg3158#msg3158)

- Iyokus' Age Iyokus is born 4014 according to the TTT Glossary. TDTCB opens Ch. 1 at 4110 making Iyokus 96 at the beginning of PON. Add 22 years, Iyokus is 118 at the beginning of TAE.

- Chanv and qirri (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=814.0) thread.

- Kellhus' reflection on Topoi (not Topos ;)):
Quote from: TWP, p180
Kellhus himself had dreamt nothing, but he'd seen the bones. According to Gotian, who'd explained the legends regarding the Battleplain in private council two days earlier, this ground had imbided too much blood over the millennia, and now, like over-salted water, had to discharge the old to accommodate the new.

- Literary Topos (http://www.litencyc.com/php/stopics.php?rec=true&UID=1126); Book Topoi:

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p626
topoi: Locations where the accumulation of trauma and suffering has frayed the boundaries between the World and the Outside.

- Three-Seas Author Q&A subforum (http://forum.three-seas.com/forums/14).

- Prophets vs. Shamans from the Q&A thread A few questions... (http://forum.three-seas.com/topics/543):

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, Mar 2005
2)So far, the deepest the histories go is to the Fall, which is to say, the arrival of the Inchoroi in the last Age of Nonmen. At the moment, that feels plenty deep, and it precedes the Tusk by quite a few thousand years. I haven't been looking at the history of Earwa so much from the standpoint of an 'absolute observer,' as from from the standpoint of what is known or thought to be known at the time of the Holy War. This isn't a rule that I adhere to, just a tendency I seem to have largely followed. There are things from the time of the Tusk I do want to flesh out, such as the conflict between the Old Prophets and the Shamans, the question of how the surviving Inchoroi brought Chorae, the 'Tears of God' to the Five Tribes before the Breaking of the Gates, and the Cuno-Halaroi Wars (Halaroi is the Nonman name for Men). Stuff like that.

- The Cleric Suicides (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=456) thread.

- TUC - Ch. 1 Excerpt (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=797.0)

- Nonmen paintings:

Quote
"Everything..." she said in a wistful tone. Her eyes seemed to track the passage of ghosts.

"Everything what?"

"The walls... The ceilings. Everywhere, limbs and people cut out of stone—images atop images... Think of the toil!"

"It wasn't always such. The Wolf Gate is an example of how they once adorned their cities. It was only when they began forgetting that they turned to this... this... excess. These are their annals, the accounting of their deeds—great and small."

"Then why not simply paint murals the way we do?"

Achamian found himself approving of this question—another long-dead habit, tingling back to life. "Nonmen can't see paintings," he said with an old man's shrug.

A frowning smile. Despite the anger that always seemed to roll about the nethers of her expression, her skeptical looks always managed to promise a fair accounting.

"It's true," Achamian said. "Paintings are naught but gibberish to their eyes. The Nonmen may resemble us, Mimara, but they are far more different than you can imagine."

"You make them sound frightening."

- Chandeliers & Cemeteries:

Quote
The ruined cemetery of Cil-Aujas.

Great ribs and sockets of living stone ravined the ceiling. Hanging from its contours, hundreds of ancient chains cluttered the open reaches, some broken midway to the floor, others still bearing the bronze lantern wheels that had once served as illumination. The floors beneath stretched for what seemed a mile, white with illumination and dust, puckered and furrowed by the long wandering lines of ancient dead. In the distances behind and to either side of the company, walls had been hewn from the scarped confusion, gaining heights easily as great as any of Carythusal's famed towers. Tombs pocked them, row upon row of black holes framed with graven script and images, lending them a wasp-nest malignancy. Immediately before the company, however, the enormous sheaves of debris continued climbing and climbing, sloping up to the very ceiling... Some kind of catastrophic collapse.

- If someone with WLW could provide me with quotes about the 'military squares' in the First Battle of the Horde; I think it's an omnipresent war POV, not Sorweel's POV as I said in episode.

- Ciphrang killing Cishaurim POV:

Quote from: TTT, p407
Sohorat roared, and plaster rained throughout the forest of columns. Flies burst from his maw. Raving wolves bubbled from his palms, smashed the sheets of light, gorged on those cringing behind them. Zioz swept burning threads into his fist, wrenched souls from their housing meat. Setmahaga clawed aside flimsy defences, struck heads from bodies, gloried in the blood that smoked across his limbs. He squealed like a thousand pigs, such was his exultation.

- It is indeed the Serbian, not the Croatian cover art we were talking about. I can't find a good link though (as bakkerfans Pinterest won't show unless you log in).

- If someone with WLW could provide me with quotes about the 'military squares' in the First Battle of the Horde; I think it's an omnipresent war POV, not Sorweel's POV as I said in episode.

Is this what you're referring to?

Quote
What Sorweel had feared had come to pass: the Scions had in fact stumbled across a Sranc host shadowing the Great Ordeal. They only glimpsed it a few times, from what rare heights the landscape provided: a column of vast squares marching in perfect formation. Twice Eskeles had cast an air-bending spell that allowed them to scry the host in greater detail. While others busied themselves counting heads, Sorweel watched with breathless wonder: the tiny figures become liquid and large, executing soundless errands utterly oblivious to the Scions and their sorcerous observation.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the cast, so I don't understand the context, but there are other references to men fighting in squares in other places too.

Thanks but no, it's not that one. Hmm... it actually might be Eskeles Scrying the Ordeal after they get ahead of the Ten-Yoke Legion and are being chased by it instead (if that's a scene). I'm looking for the description of the Ordeal as fighting squares beneath the Swayal.

It might be this, although I couldn't pin-point exactly:

Quote
The Men of the Middle-North raised their shields and spears against them.
So did the Horde crash against the Army of the Middle-North. The dead could scarce fall, so packed, so violent was the melee. Men grimacing in thrusting panic. Nonman faces squealing and snapping. Sranc, crushed by the heave of their countless brothers. Sranc, their every bestial instinct bent to ferocity. Men cringed from their eye-blink speed, gasped against their gut-twisting stink: the rot of fish mongers clothed in fecal rags.
But the Shining Men stood their stubborn ground. Heavily armoured, stout of heart, and mighty of limb, they knew that flight would be their destruction. Torrents of arrows and javelins blackened the deranged vista, falling upon the ranks in a soundless clatter, but only those foolish enough to raise their faces were wounded or killed. Heeding the lessons of the ancients, they fought in deep phalanxes, arrayed so that those forward could brace their backs or shoulders against the shields of those behind, so that the entire formation must be clawed like a burr from world's hair before moving. The Galeoth and Tydonni wielded their thrusting spears and nansuri, short-swords designed for close-quarters fighting, to great effect, stabbing at the abominations pinioned against their shields. The Thunyeri, who were weaned on the blood of Sranc, used the hatchets long favoured by their fathers.
The host's bowmen maintained their positions immediately behind the common line, loosing shaft after shaft on shallow arcs over the heads of their countrymen. All of them, even the famed Agmundrmen, fired blind, knowing their arrows killed and yet despairing the insignificance of their toll.
For the knights and thanes stranded on their ponies behind the common line, it seemed a kind of mad performance, like those staged by the great troupes of dancers who frequented the courts of kings. For weeks they had skirmished with the Sranc, had grinned the pulse-pounding grin of the chase and kill. But now they could only watch in astonished frustration, for the Sranc had swallowed the very ground they would ride. Hundreds abandoned their mounts, hoping to shoulder their way to the fore of their men-at-arms, but the Judges stayed them with threats of doom and damnation, reminded them of the Aspect-Emperor and his Martial Prohibitions. For each phalanx was a kind of abacus, and each man a bead bound by strict rules of substitution.
Earl Hirengar of Canute spurned the Judges. He was one of those belligerent souls who could not abide watching while his lessers fought, let alone consider the consequences of his acts. When the Judges tried to seize him, he killed two and grievously injured a third. Then, because no signal could be heard above the clamour, he rode unopposed into the phalanx of his countrymen with his thanes in grim tow. His company managed to hack their way some thirty yards beyond the common line, great-bearded Tydonni, their mouths howling inaudible war-cries, their swords and axes swinging on wild arcs. But the Sranc engulfed them, climbed the backs of their brothers, leapt to tackle the hapless knights. Hirengar himself was dragged from his saddle by the beard. Death came swirling down.
Dismayed and disorganized, his kinsmen faltered. But even as panic leapt like wildfire among them, four Nuns floated above, their billows flaring golden, their sorcerous mutter fluting through the ringing deafness. Hanging as high as treetops, they decimated the Sranc with scythes of crackling light, and so provided the Canutishmen a desperate respite.
Wherever Men faltered, the Swayali witches were there above them, their silk billows cupping the light of their dread dispensations, glowing like jellyfish in the deep. Their mouths flashing lanterns. Their hands working looms of killing incandescence. After the initial shock, the Men of the Middle-North embraced their training, realizing with a kind of wonder that this was what they had prepared for all along. How to yield ten paces whenever the dead piled too high. How to draw their own wounded and dead through their line. Even how to fight the sky, for in their frenzy, the Sranc would claw across the backs and shoulders of their brothers and leap over the forward ranks.
Battle became a kind of dread harvest. Sranc died burning. Sranc died punctured and trampled. Sranc died scratching at shields. Yet they came and they came, surging beneath the witches and their comb of brilliant destruction, a shrieking chorus that wetted ears with blood. Men who faltered for exhaustion rotated with men from the rearward ranks. Soon gored figures could be seen stumbling behind the common lines, crying out for water, for bandages, or simply crashing to the dust. The Judges paced the line, their gilded Circumfixes held high, their mouths working about exhortations no one could hear. Hell itself seemed to churn but a keel away. And they wondered that mere Men could hold such wickedness at bay.

Thats before the scrying though, late in Chapter 7.

Just listened to the cast, and it made my work morning go by super quick!  Thanks, guys, really enjoyable as always.  I had one clarification on Cleric's size.  I remember reading this recently, so thought I'd mention it.  The scene where Akka and Cleric are walking side-by-side toward the Coffers, Akka thinks to himself he's 'shoulder to shoulder, or rather shoulder to elbow' (paraphrasing) with the Nonman, giving a pretty strong reference to their relative sizes.  Akka's shoulder was apparently level with Cleric's elbow, making Cleric pretty tall, but not too far over the 6' mark (maybe 6'6"?).  Additionally, in TJE, Cleric sat at a table with Kosoter and Co. in the tavern, and Akka didn't acknowledge (from his POV) that he was significantly larger than anyone else.  It took him a few minutes to even figure out he was a Nonman.  If he was huge (Prometheus-like) it would have been immediately apparent he was a Nonman.  Also, let's not forget Akka wore Cleric's nimil armor after the Nonman's demise.  It was overly large on him, but still wearable.  Two cents spent.  :)

Lol - thanks for the ups, Somnambulist.

We're like a regular radio show at this point (as our last two were exactly a month apart). I'm always surprised at how fast the Cast seems to go by when recording.

Oh, and, H, thanks but that's not it either :).

Thanks Somna. You need to do one :D

Regular radio show? Don't those happen like... every day?

At any rate, I think we could do them more often if we had more topic suggestions. (then, you know, spend some time editing/polishing them, and release them on a schedule, higher quality, more consistency, more member spotlights/participants...)

All previous Casts are back up - if anyone even noticed they were gone.

We'll try coordinating with SR to see if we can move to free hosting on his blog.

Also, I should have the latest, The Slog - TDTCB portion, up this evening.

TSACast #10 (https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast/tsacast10midwif) - Notes:

- Bolivar and I refer to two of LostCasts #6 & #7, which feature both about 30 and 45 minutes of recorded content and Bolivar's first two introductions.
- Disciple thread by FB (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1124.0), some discussion of "Bakker & Women" there-in.
- I mention that LTG is semi-autobiographical but in the LTG speculation threads there was a connection made to Kaufman's Adaptation, by Jorge, I believe.
- Who Are You Rooting For? [Spoilers] (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=954.0) thread, also started by Jorge.
- I definitely laugh when Bolivar brings up awesome side characters and GJ somehow miraculously lurks, withholding the compulsive "Athjeari" mention.
- Looks to be a semi-decent source on The First Crusade (http://abrahamicfamilyreunion.org/the-first-crusade-compiled-by-vanessa-brake/); though, for my money, the Second Crusade (http://www.medievality.com/second-crusade.html) seems to have offered more cited examples over the years of speculative antecedents.
- Aforementioned Vulgar People's Crusade (http://www.fanaticus.org/DBA/armies/Variants/PeoplesCrusade.html)
- H's reread Crusade link post (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1658.msg23423#msg23423), which has a Fourth Crusade reference as well.
- Harold Lamb - Iron Men and Saints (http://www.amazon.com/The-Crusades-Iron-Men-Saints/dp/B00005VQM8)
- One of Harold Lamb (http://www.amazon.ca/The-Harold-Lamb-Megapack-Adventure-ebook/dp/B00KDX35S8)'s cheap e-book reprints Bolivar mentioned.
- I believe H tried to recall Sasheoka, former Grandmaster of the Scarlet Spires.
- As for Esmenet & Aurang threads, searching either of those names alone or together from the main page without the "&" should yield a few results.
- Gall. I'd write out the whole "Mimara introduction quote" I'd mentioned but it is not only the first sentence of Esmenet's first perspective, it is the first couple paragraphs (TDTCB, p118, in mine).

That's it for what I noticed. Good job to H and Bolivar.

As I mentioned, I'd love to have a Cast where H and FB go toe to toe for nerdanels, with an MG sprinkled in and another with TSA's fan-artists, Somnambulist, Quinthane, and a dash of FB.

And we'll need volunteers for TWP's portion of the Slog TSACast.

TSACast #11 Notes: (https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast/tsacast-11)

- This one was fun too - GJ's dream of doing a book a Cast is remarkably simple and entertaining.
- Also, thanks again to profgrape for participating (along with the regulars, without whom nothing would get done). We're all quite taken by you, as perceived vocally :P. On that note, I've figured out why profgrape is endearing to me particularly; speech pattern very similar to one of my favorite professors in uni.
- Mithfanion quote from Bakker (http://rsbakker.wordpress.com/2013/10/01/the-four-goads-at-the-crossroads/#comment-24012), my bold:

Quote from: Bakker, Oct 2/13
Good to hear from you Mith! The only way I can see this being ready for summer 2014 is if my publishers decide to split the thing. This is the impasse at the moment: the book is looking too big. There really is nothing more I can say until everything is sorted out. I do want you to know that I’ve taken many of the criticisms you’ve made of the previous books quite seriously in writing this… Although not identical to my vision of the series, yours has been close enough to alert me to a number of the ways I’ve strayed – enough to convince me to let the book write itself, rather than shoehorn it into anyone else’s schedule.

In fact, I might just decide to blame you personally for the reason why it’s taken me so long!

- Cnaiur's "Shitload of Kids:"

Quote from: TDTCB, Ch. 6, p173, Small Canadian Paperback
He had fathered thirty-seven sons, nineteen of the pure blood.

- Chekhov's Gun (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChekhovsGun) (TV Tropes)
- Lol, me trying to bring everything back to Cast topic at about the ten minute mark.
- Wilshire's g-string quote from the Ch. 3 Excerpt (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=465.0) reading (though, I'm positive I've read almost this exact same wording in an interview or on ZTS):

Quote from: Wilshire
A nice quote to end with:
"The whole series has been a strip tease ... and TUC is the g-string shooting across the room, finally leaving everything fully exposed" - R. Scott Bakker

- "WP is a favorite of a lot of ours" - my quote, GJ :P. And, of course, I realize now that my response to you on Schrodinger's topic in Quorum was, in fact, off-topic because you hadn't listened to the Cast yet (unless you did through profgrape's PM).

- Mekeritrig quote; regret quote (I'll have to search more for the regret quote, as I just don't have the time today):

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, 2004
I can recap and clarify the info that's been given so far: the Nonmen are an ancient race, the 'original people' of Earwa, who are nearly immortal, and who fought both for and against the No-God during the Apocalypse. They are slowly going insane: their minds can only hold roughly four or five human lifetimes of experiences, and as the centuries pass the traumatic experiences they suffer crowd out their other memories, until now, almost all Nonmen remember only the pain and loss in their lives. And some, like the Nonman (Mekertrig) that Kellhus meets in the Prologue, have taken to creating traumatic experiences just so they can have something to remember...

- I think Wilshire meant WP rather than WLW at minute 26.
- MG rampaging in ;).
- Ciphrang/Iyokus/Outside quote:

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 19, p514, Small Canadian Paperback
He threw aside the brilliant carpets and painted the circles across the tiles with deft, practised strokes. Light spilled from his colourless lips as he muttered the Daimotic Cants. And, as the tempest approached, he at last completed his interminable song. He dared speak the Ciphrang's name.

"Ankaryotis! Heed me!"

From the safety of his circle of symbols, Iyokus gazed in wonder at the sheeted lights of the Outside.

- Lol; star-crossed lovers.
- Quote about draft-readers not getting Kellhus (from one of (https://www.sfsite.com/10a/sb185.htm) many really good interviews (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=34.0)):

Quote from: Bakker, Sep 2004
Originally, my idea was to slowly 'externalize' Kellhus, to move away from his POV and show more and more of his manipulation from the outside. I'd have a wicked gleam in my eye as I wrote, thinking 'What a sneaky bastard!' But my readers kept coming back to me with things like, 'I'm so relieved Kellhus is coming around!' It turned out that Kellhus was duping them as thoroughly as he was duping the characters! They knew he wasn't trustworthy, just as we all know commercials aren't trustworthy, and yet the instinct to think 'Ah, it's OK,' is just so strong (which is why advertisers continue using the tactics they do).

This was perhaps the second greatest difficulty I had writing Kellhus: depicting him in such a way that my readers would always have a sense of the distance between his claims and his intentions. I'm still not happy with the way I resolved this problem.

- "Scourged in the old way" quote:

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 22, p637, Small Canadian Paperback
"Yield, Anasurimbor Kellhus," he said hoarsely. "You will be scourged according to Scripture."

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 23, p672, Small Canadian Paperback
"Serwe executed!" the sorcerer exclaimed. "How could such a thing happen? Proyas? How could you let such a thing happen? She was just-"

"Ask Gotian!" Proyas blurted. "Trying them according to the Tusk was his idea - his! He thought it would legitimize the affair, make it seem less like... less-"

- H's Aurang Quote/1st March (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1663.msg23905#msg23905):

Quote
It lowered its small human head and studied the patterns the innumerable dead had sketched across the plains, marvelling at the resemblances to certain sigils once prized by its species—back when they could actually be called such. Genera. Species. Race.

This is interesting, perhaps confirming what I had speculated in this thread (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1667.0) that each Inchoroi could now be very different from each other, through the selective use of the grafts.

- The pause...
- "Even the old things would succumb" quote (TTT):

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 5, p141, Small Canadian Paperback
Even the ancient things, Cnaiur realized, would suffer the Holy War's fate. The Dunyain would strip them the way the People stripped the carcasses of bison. Fat for soap and fuel. Bone for implements. Hide for shelter and shields. No matter how deep they ran, the ages themselves would be consumed. The Dunyain was something new. Perpetually new.

Like lust or hunger.

- Maithanet's quote to Xerius about coming after him (2nd March):

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 9, p232, Small Canadian Paperback
Maithanet's laughter was sudden, loud, reverberant enough to fill even the hollows of great Xothei.

Xerius fairly gasped. The Writ of Psata-Antyu, the code governing Shrial conduct, forbade laughing aloud as a carnal indulgence. Maithanet, he realized, was giving him a glimpse of his depths. But for what purpose? All of this - the mobs, the demand to meet here in Xothei, even the chanting of his name - was a demonstration of some kind, terrifying in the premeditated lack of subtlety.

I'll crush you, Maithanet was saying. If the Holy War fails, you'll be destroyed.

- I was mistaken; Xerius did not have Shrial Exemption, which was the whole loss of his Indenture.
- Probability Trance Vision thread (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1673.msg23910#msg23910):

Chapter 9:

Only this part really struck me:

Quote
Nameless Schoolmen climbing a steep, gravelly beach. A nipple pinched between fingers. A gasping climax. A severed head thrust against the burning sun. Apparitions marching out of morning mist.
A dead wife.
Kellhus exhaled, then breathed deep the bittersweet pinch of cedar, earth, and war.
There was revelation.

Some strong forshadowing here.  Thoughts on what each represents?

- Kellhus quote about using Serwe (Slept with your wife quote):

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 11, p282, Small Canadian Paperback
Of all the souls Kellhus had mastered, few had proven as useful as Serwe. Lust and shame were ever the shortest paths to the hearts of world-born men. Ever since he'd sent her to Achamian, the sorcerer had compensated for his half-remembered trespass in innumerable subtle ways. The old Conriyan proverb was true: no friend was more generous than the one who had seduced your wife...

And generosity was precisely what he needed from Drusas Achamian.

- "Dead Wife" quote; see above to H's Probability Vision quote.

- Kellhus to Cnaiur quote:

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 22, p636, Small Canadian Paperback
"Lie made flesh," he repeated, staring into the fiend's embattled face. "The hunt need not end... Remember this when you recall the secret of battle. You still command the ears of the Great."

- My ramble about Proyas not doing anything with the Zaudunyani's Skin-Spy Head is invalidated because Kellhus, not Proyas, tells Achamian to have the Zaudunyani show him what "lies in the Garden":

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 23, p665, Small Canadian Paperback
"My Nascenti... Tell them to show you what lies in the garden."

- My ZTS post/quote (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=402.0) "What's going to happen in the intervening years?"

- Lol - we fuck up MG talking at about 1hr mark because we had to verify via text when people had to get offline. Reading and talking throws everyone off but then we talk for another 30+ min after 15 or 20 min is mentioned.
- Second Crusade corollary (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Antioch) to Saubon opening the door of Caraskand (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Antioch#Capture_of_Antioch).
- Mallahat/Maithanet/Moenghus ZTS thread link: Moenghus = Mallahet? (http://forum.three-seas.com/topics/133)
- Don't have meaning but must (Poison Oak Epileptic Trees (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WMG/PoisonOakEpilepticTrees?from=Main.PoisonOakEpilepticTrees) - TV Tropes)
- Apparently, we all have got a lot of love for Setup Achamian.
- I believe MG set up a thread about some of this since the Cast was recorded: The Circumfix (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1692.0)
- Cememketri, Grandmaster of the Imperial Saik
- Eleazarus reaction quote about Achamian destroying the Scarlet Spires in the Library:

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 16, p424, Small Canadian Paperback
Directly or indirectly, this one Mandate dog had undone whatever advantage they'd gained at the Battle of Mengedda. First, by killing two sorcerers of rank at the Sareotic Library, among them Yutirames, an old and powerful ally of Eleazaras's.

- And Five or Eight? (hint, I'm right ;)):

Quote from: TWP, Ch. 16, p424, Small Canadian Paperback
That evening at the Sareotic Library, watching this one man resist eight sorcerers of rank with glittering, abstract lights, Eleazaras had envied as he'd never envied before. Such miraculous power. Such purity of dispensation. How? he had thought. How?

Fucking Mandate pigs.

- Clearly a good time because we were overclocked and the end seems to come too early.

No, Wilshire, I think that earlier than your brief sojourn. "The pause..." I noted was an imperceptibly longer silence than usual as we'd all stumbled talking over each other a couple moments before and no one knew when to jump in - thankfully, MG does.

H, I believe that was the quote the guys were actually talking about in the Cast, not the two I set out to find. If you find the one you're on about, let me know so I can update this thread.

Someone brought up that we all knew the Holy War was meant to fail. But the Consult needed it the to destroy the Cish. How? What was the consults plan if Khellus never showed up and "saved" it?
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: Wilshire on February 16, 2016, 08:38:55 pm
They tried to stop the Emperor from betraying it, which he did anyway. If he had supplied water and troops and schools the war would have turned out much differently. The Consult underestimated him, and failed mieserably because of it. Kellhus saving it was a happy coincidence for them, until they realized that some peoples know as "the Dunyain" could see their spies, rather than the Cishaurim (who they thought were discovering the spies, and thus pushed for the wars success).

TSACast #12 Notes: (https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast/tsacast-12)

- Dagliash Dream; on Ch. 1, p4, Small Canadian Paperback.
- H recalls Achamian's internment by the Scarlet Spires in TWP.
- Weapons of Animata (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=979.0)
- The Dagliash Dream "detritus" quote because I think it's awesome:

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 1, p4, Small Canadian Paperback
From the base of the walls to the battlements, wherever the fortress's ramparts faced the sea, countless thousands had been nailed across every surface: here a flaxen-maned warrior struck down in his prime, there an infant pinned through the mouth like a laurel. Fishing nets had been cast and fixed about them - to keep their rotting ligature intact, Achamian supposed. The netting sagged near the wall's base, bellied by an accumulation of skulls and other human detritus. Innumerable terns and crows, even several gannets, darted and wheeled about the macabre jigsaw; it seem he remembered them most of all.

- Dreams featuring Nau-Cayuti begin after Kellhus hypnotizes Achamian and Achamian teaches Kellhus the Cant of Calling - geoffrobro was right.
- Nau-Cayuti's death notation:

Quote from: TTT, Encyclopedic Glossary, p516, Small Canadian Paperback
Then, in 2140, Nau-Cayuti's beloved concubine, Aulisi, was abducted by Sranc marauders and taken to Golgotterath. According to The Sagas, Seswatha was able to convince the Prince (who was once his student) that she could be rescued from the Incu-Holoinas, and the two embarked on an expedition that is almost certainly apocryphal. Mandate commentators dispute the account found in The Sagas, where they successfully return with both Aulisi and the Heron Spear, claiming that Aulisi was never found. Whatever happened, at least two things are certain: the Heron Spear was in fact recovered and Nau-Cayuti died shortly after (apparently poisoned by his first wife, Ieva).

- I said Seswatha is in Eamnor (Atrithau) following his being tacked on the Wall of the Dead at Dagliash; however, as to our indecision about when Seswatha was captured, the Dream dates it to three years after the "advent of the No-God" (and he's being tortured for the location of the Heron Spear specifically):

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 1, p5, Small Canadian Paperback
Three years had passed since the advent of the No-God. Achamian could feel him, a looming across the horizon. A sense of doom.

- Second Dagliash Dream notation fumble; literally the first four pages ;).
- Missing Cants of Calling notation: I am almost positive it's referred to as Compass and Caller at some point but I can't place the quote. Help?
- Lol; somewhere Wilshire pulls us back to TTT via text message.
- The "Cull the Wilfull" analogue begins in Ch. 3, p57.
- Lol - Wilshire calls Caraskand Caraskard even though, in context, I think he meant Joktha.
- Gold paraphrase by MG and geoffrobro: TTT is the "patient unraveling."
- geoffrobro has the best "Coles Notes" descriptions of events in the books: "A couple years ago, I was just a barbarian on the pasture..." Lol. So funny. Cnaiur's just "seen too much." Classic psychological trauma; PTSD.
- MG and Wilshire mention Kellhus dropping his "affect" before Achamian:

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 11, p327, Small Canadian Paperback
The transformation of his expression was subtle enough that someone standing three or more paces away would have missed it, but for Achamian it was enough to send him stumbling back in horror. As one, Kellhus's every facial nuance went dead - utterly dead.

- GJ pops in with his singular and stellar commentary.
- geoffrobro brought up the two quotes regarding a God being mentioned "in two different perspectives" in Joktha:

I believe this was the section he's thinking about from Cnaiur's perspective:

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 7, p201, Small Canadian Paperback
Cnaiur howled in exultation. They came at him with the butts and hafts of their spears, their faces screwed in terror and determination. Cnaiur leapt into their midst, scarred arms hacking. "Demon!" he roared. "Demon!"

Hands clutched for his arms and he shattered wrists. Forms tackled his torso and he snapped necks, crushed spines. All the world had become rotted leather, and he was the only iron. The only iron.

He was of the People.

And the Conphas corollary:

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 9, p233, Small Canadian Paperback
And this one Scylvendi, this Utemot Chieftain. Conphas had witnessed it, as much as any of the Columnaries who'd quailed before him in Joktha. In the firelight the barbarian's eyes had been coals set in his skull. And the blood had painted him the colour of his true skin. The swatting arms, the roaring voice, the chest-pounding declarations. They had all seen the God. They had all seen dread Gilgaol rearing about him, a great horned shadow...

And now, after wrestling him to the ground like some lunatic bull, after the wonder of capturing him - capturing War! - he had simply vanished.

- MG's "Kellhus talking to the World" passage:

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 14, 363
"I know you can hear me," he said to the world, dark and sacred. "I know that you listen."

- profgrape's passage mention:

Quote from: TTT, Ch. 14, 374
Vast was the night. Great was the ground.

And yet they yielded. They yielded.

Step-step-step. Incantations of space. World crossing world.

The hares darted from his path. The thrushes burst from his feet, hurtling into the stars. The jackals raced at his side, their tongues lolling, their loping limbs tiring.

"Who are you?" they panted as their hearts failed them.

"Your master!" cried the godlike man as he outdistanced them. And though humour was unknown to him, he laughed. He laughed until the sky shook.

Your master.

- Lol - profgrape's comment about wanting to read about "this Moenghus guy everyone is so crazy about."
- Beer can opening - I thought I was on mute.
- Rape of Omindalea quote (and despite our collective shite memories, there is the earlier Nonman-human coupling, cited in the Cuno-Inchoroi Wars entry):

Quote from: Cujara Cinmoi, 2005
The Rape of Omindalea. Jiricet, a Nonman Siqû to the God-King Nincarû-Telesser II (787-828), rapes Omindalea (808-825), first daughter of Sanna-Neorjë (772-858) of the house of Anasûrimbor in 824, and then flees to Ishterebinth. When Nil’giccas refuses to return Jiricet to Ûmerau, Nicarû-Telesser II expels all Nonmen from the Ûmeri Empire. Omindalea conceives by the union and dies bearing Anasûrimbor Sanna-Jephera (825- 1032), called ‘Twoheart.’ After a house-slave conceives by him, Sanna-Jephera is adopted by Sanna-Neorjë as his heir.
- The cuneiform script and the syllabaries of the Nonmen are outlawed and replaced with a consonantal alphabet, c.835.

- Wilshire refutes MG, citing the Bakker quote regarding Kellhus as prodigy:

Quote from: Cujara Cinmoi, 2004
Sorry about that. Kellhus is actually a prodigy among even the Dunyain, though any one of them would have us raking their yard and taking out their trash (and loving them for it) inside of five sentences.

- Quote regarding Anasurimbor lifespan:

Quote from: TTT, Encyclopedic Glossary, p580
The Kuniuric period proper did not begin until 1408, when Anasurimbor Nanor-Ukkerja I, exploiting the confusion surrounding the collapse of the Scintya Empire, seized the Ur-Throne in Tryse, declaring himself the first High King of Kuniuri. Over the course of his long life (he lived to the age of 178, the reputed result of the Nonman blood in his veins), Nanor-Ukkerja I extended Kuniuri to the Yimelati Mountains in the north, to the westernmost coasts of the Cerish Sea in the east, to Sakarpus in the south, and to the Demua Mountains in the west. At his death, he divided this empire between his sons, creating Aorsi and Sheneor in addition to Kuniuri proper.

- Wilshire notes Bakker's quote about the Dunyain unintentionally breeding for sorcery:

Quote from: Cujara Cinmoi, 2006
The idea is that pertains to a certain kind of ability to remember. Since memory, like other cognitive capacities, seems to be somewhat heritable, so is the ability - but only somewhat. The thing with the Dunyain, however, is that they have spent millennia breeding for certain cognitive capacities.

- profgrape's comment about Bakker dropping info outside of text, concerning the Tusk (http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.ca/2011/07/r-scott-bakker-interview-part-2.html):

Quote from: Bakker, June 25/11
The Inchoroi then looked to Eänna, where the Men were both more fierce and more naive. They gave the Chorae to the Five Tribes as gifts, and to one tribe, the black-haired Ketyai, they gave a great tusk inscribed with their hallowed laws and most revered stories–as well as one devious addition: the divine imperative to invade the ‘Land of the Felled Sun’ and hunt down and exterminate the ‘False Men.’

- Sorry, MG, I totally didn't ask you to weigh in on your final thoughts regarding the Moenghus/Kellhus conversation. My bad, friend.

Great cast, all around. Thanks to everyone who participated and those who listen :).

I always thought that Sanna Jephera and Nanor ukkerja were the same person, but their is a four hundred year difference between them. Twoheart lived for 207 years and the founder of Kuniuri lived for 178, the Nonmen blood seemed to last. In the appendices there is a Dunyain pragma called Meigon who I think is near 200. So the heritage is still strong in the bloodline of the Dunyain.

All you have to do is pass this 5 page quiz on the series...

 :P

Nah, I'm kidding, we'll include you in the PM for the next one, once we figure out when we're looking to run it.

Don't leave me out. I can give no guarantees, but I truly want to do a Cast. Maybe I can squeeze it in this time around.

I asked Blackstone if he wanted to do a Cast of his choosing or jump right in with the reread Casts. My ideal Cast for TJE would be yourself, MSJ, and profgrape, H, and Bolivar, seeing as you four are the most active Sloggers right now.

I find out my schedule for next week tomorrow, hopefully, so I'll send out a mass PM to the Cast contenders within a day or two and see if we can't get something going for next week or the week after for TJE.

I'm so stoked that you guys started a podcast. I've been looking for a way to get a TSA fix at work.

I just finished the WP reread and have to say I'm with Wilshire about Moe. After cutting swazond into his arms, he had no choice but to head south to the Fanim. In a way, a Dunyain is like a child in that they had no conception into the outside world. Kellhus probably would have made the same mistake if Moe hadn't (inadvertently) prepared the way with Cnauir. Moe tried having other children that could complete his domination, and they weren't capable due to their "human" half, so he had to call for Kellhus. Had he not chosen the wrong path, he would not have needed Kell.
IIRC the Psukhe is the most primitive of the magics. So the shortest path would have been learning the Gnosis. Ergo, Moe failed to chose the shortest path.
IMO :)

Always good to have new castees. We'll put you on the list (its a very short list, don't worry). Interest in doing a cast from someone new generally makes having a cast far more likely. Otherwise... its just the same people talking to eachoher about the same topics, and that gets old ;). We need fresh perspectives to keep things lively.

TSACast #9 Notes: (https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast/tsacast-9-july-2515-the-long-meandering-path)

- Finally. Apologies to H (and geoffrobro, MG, GJ, and Wilshire) that I took so, so long doing these notes.
- A few questions... (http://forum.three-seas.com/topics/543) (White Lord thread again ;)).
- Rankine TDTCB Cover Art (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/61/Darkness_That_Comes_Before.jpg/200px-Darkness_That_Comes_Before.jpg)
- Mild Panic about Overlook possibly not publishing the book: TPB post (https://rsbakker.wordpress.com/2015/06/20/in-the-shadow-of-summer/), Save Bakker's The Unholy Consult (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1604.msg21977#msg21977), Emailing Overlook/Orbit on a publication date (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1602.0), Wertzone: TUC Delayed (http://thewertzone.blogspot.ca/2015/06/scott-bakkers-unholy-consult-delayed.html)
      - "Overlook is very committed to the series" (https://rsbakker.wordpress.com/2015/07/26/stuff-to-blow-your-brains/)
      - Hats off to the illustrious MG, as noted in the Cast; died laughing at your "Mr. Agent person, contact me, we can do it!"
- One of the threads wherein, contemporary of the Cast, H starts championing ideas regarding Cishaurim/Water/Psukhe (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=782.msg22059#msg22059).
- I know there were other posts by Duskweaver that elucidated the concept of "thaumaturgy" vs. sorcery but this breakdown (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=779.msg3865#msg3865) is the best I can find at the moment.
- geoffro paraphrasing Ciphrang POV in TTT:

Quote from: TTT, p365, Small Canadian Paperback
The manling made noise in terror, then unleashed his own light: a thread of raw energy. With one hand, Zioz grasped the thread curious. When he pulled, the soul was yanked from the manling. The light vanished. The meat slapped the floor.

Quote from: TTT, p407
Zioz swept burning threads into his fist, wrenched the souls from their housing meat.

- H mentions a thread about Atrithau and Sakarpus surviving the First Apocalypse (http://"http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1605.0).
- Thread about Titirga and his Mark (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1360.0) (spoilers for The False Sun).
- geoffro paraphrases two quotes:

Quote from: TJE, p494, Small Canadian Paperback
"Of course... Think on it, my mortal friend. The dark is oblivion made manifest. And oblivion encircles us always. It is the ocean, and we are naught but silvery bubbles. It leans all about us. You see it every time you glimpse the horizon - though you know it not. In the light, our eyes are what blinds us. But in the dark - in the dark! - the line of the horizon opens... opens like a mouth... and oblivion gapes."

Quote from: TDTCB, p513
Scylvendi children were told that the sky was a yaksh, impossibly vast and pricked by innumerable holes. "See, Nayu?" he had said, "see the thousand thousand lights peeking through the leather of the night? This is how we know that a greater sun burns beyond this world. This is how we know that when it's night, it is truly day, and that when it's day, it is truly night. This is how we know, Nayu, that the World is a lie."

- Quote from H (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=782.msg22061#msg22061):

Quote
“Think of the way a fire will shroud the world in the course of illuminating a camp. Often the light of what we see blinds us, and we come to think there is one angle and one angle only. Though they know it not, this is why the Cishaurim blind themselves. They douse the fire of their eyes, pluck the one angle they see, to better grasp the many they recollect. They sacrifice the subtle articulations of knowledge for the inchoate profundities of intuition. They recall the tone and timbre, the passion, of the God’s voice—to near perfection—even as the meanings that make up true sorcery escape them.”

- Quote from geoffro referencing Iyokus' blinding:

Quote from: TTT, p87
"Shhhh, Iyokus. Do you remember what it is to see? ... The words," Eleazaras hissed. "Do you remember the words?"

In sorcery, everything depended on the purity of meaning. Who knew what blinding might do?

"Y-yessss."

"Then you are whole."

- Quote from geoffro referencing Achamian's notation to Esmenet regarding the Cants of Compulsion:

Quote from: TTT, p167
"Think of the soul as a network of innumerable rivers. With the Cants of Compulsion, the old banks are swamped, dikes are washed away, new channels are cut ... Sometimes when the floodwaters recede, things resume their old course. Sometimes they don't."

- Quote from H + MG:

Quote from: TTT, p484
"I am dying, Nayu." Hot whispers in his ear. "I need your strength ..."

- Meppa is X (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=800.0), Meppa is X (II) (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1336.0)

- H mentioned that Bakker said Meppa was his favorite character to write; actually Malowebi (https://rsbakker.wordpress.com/2013/10/01/the-four-goads-at-the-crossroads/#comment-24022).

- Lol; I think I heard Chickshire chastising Odin.

- Quote regarding Inrau's "dream" introduction (which for my money was always a guess about Achamian compulsing Inrau to meet him):

Quote from: TDTCB, p93
In his dream, Inrau walked through canyons of burnt brick, through faces and figures illuminated by rags of torchlight. And he heard a voice from nowhere, crying through his bones, across every finger's-breadth of his skin, speaking words like shadows of fists striking just beyond the corner of his eyes. Words that battered whatever remained to him. Words that walked with his limbs.

He glimpsed the sagging facade of a tavern, then a low, golden-dim enclosure of smoke, tables, and overhead beams. The entrance enveloped him. The rising ground tipped forward, directed him toward a malevolent blackness in the far corner of the room. It too enveloped him - another entrance. Everything rushed into the bearded man, his head slack against the chapped stucco, his face on a lazy, upward angle, but tight with some forbidden ecstasy - light spilled from his working mouth. Flakes of sun in his eyes.

Achamian...

- Lol - apparently, there is so much retread in the TTT Reread Cast; thanks for profgrape for providing a difference in that particular roundtable.
        - verbatim in some parts.
- Quote from geoffro regarding Moenghus' comment about Inrithi/Fanim children not born to their antithesis:

Quote from: TTT, p408
"It is their nature to beieve as their fathers believed," the darkness continued. "To desire as they desired ... Men are like wax poured into moulds: their souls are cast by their circumstances. Why are no Fanim children born to Inrithi parents? Why are no Inrithi children born to Fanim parents? Because these truths are made, cast by the particularities of circumstance. Rear an infant among Fanim and he will become Fanim. Rear him among Inrithi and he will become Inrithi...

Split him in two, and he would murder himself."

- MG - so funny (I honestly don't remember what exactly he said but I died).

- Quote from MG regarding the Cishaurim "seeing" Achamian and Xinemus:

Quote from: TWP, p643
When they passed near the camps of the enemy, they could feel the Cishaurim's plucked eyes - brilliant, pure, like a lamplight before a silvered mirror - search for them from beyond the horizon. Many times Achamian felt that otherworldly light throw shadows from their shadows. Many times Achamian thought they were doomed. But always those eyes turned away from their inhuman scrunity, either deceived or ... Achamian could not say why.

- Quote from H regarding "pinprick souls:"

Quote from: TTT, p242
One night during the infancy of the Holy War - and for reasons Cnaiur could no longer recall - the sorcerer had taken a crude parchment map of the Three Seas and pressed it flat over a copper laver filled with water. He had poked holes of varying sizes throughout the parchment, and when he held his oil lantern high to complement the firelight, little beads of water glinted across the tanned landscape. Each man, he explained, was a kind of hole in existence, a point where the Outside penetrated the world. He tapped one of the beads with his finger. It broke, staining the surrounding parchment. When the trials of the world broke men, he explained, the Outside leaked into the world.

This, he had said, was madness.

...

The bead had broken - there could be no doubt of that. According to the sorcerer, madness all came down to the question of origins. If the divine possessed him, he would be some kind of visionary or prophet. If the demonic...

- Quote from GJ regarding No-God taking part in battle:

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p518, Apocalypse
According to extant accounts, not once did the No-God expose himself to battle during this time. It was the years of attrition that forced him to intercede in the Battle of Mengedda.

- H's Breakdown of The Four Revelations (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=460.msg21511#msg21511)
- Someone's cell phone goes off. Lol.
- Quote from GJ regarding "whole nations are damned" interview answer (http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.ca/2011/07/r-scott-bakker-interview-part-2.html):

Quote from: Bakker, 2011
Damnation is not local. There is a right and wrong way to believe in Eärwa, which means that entire nations will be damned. Since the question of just who will be saved and who will be damned is a cornerstone of The Aspect-Emperor’s plot, there’s not much more that I can say.

- "Fifth Tribe" notation:

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p635, Xiuhianni
One of the Five Tribes of Men, who, according to The Chronicle of the Tusk, refused to follow the other four tribes into Earwa.

- MG paraphrased Bakker regarding a quote about the mountains being the "edge of the world." I do know which quote he's talking about, I just can't find it - if someone can that would be great. But two others that mark the same notation:

A Divine Wind? (http://forum.three-seas.com/topics/781):
Quote from: Bakker, 2005
Leaving the rest of the world unexplored was actually a self-conscious decision on my part. In ancient times, roads ended rather than forming a self-contained network. The worlds of our ancestors were fenced by ignorance and mystery. One of the things I don't like about Martin's or Erikson's worlds is that they feel global, which is to say, modern.

Fantasy Hotlist interview, 2011 (http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.ca/2011/06/new-r-scott-bakker-interview-part-1.html):
Quote from: Bakker
But way back, I wrote this paper on the difference between ancient and modern roads (in the context of a philosopher named Levinas). The signature conceptual difference, I argued, was the way modern roads enclose the globe, the way civilization, in a sense, never runs out for us the way it did for the ancients. At the time I decided the best way to remain true to the ancient headspace I was trying to conjure was to make sure all the roads in Earwa run out, to make the terra incognita in my world absolute.

- Lol - I pop in a second time to fuck shit up and prolong the Cast. I was just finishing up the second hole of my second eighteen that day - which was the reason I couldn't actively partake as I was golfing with some of the grounds crew. I forgot to note the noise event earlier in the Cast because I was laughing too hard when it happened but I was definitely driving a golf cart while listening to the Cast being recorded (not waiting for the bus like Wilshire guesses offhand).

- The Cleric Suicides... thread (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=456.0)

- And I leave the way I came; letting GJ to do a commendable job of closing up in Wilshire's absence :).

The Aspect-Emperor had sent us three suicides! That was the message to my father. 'Look! Look what I can do! Now tell me, Can you do the same?

- TWP - "The Warrior-Prophet Shall Come Before You:"

Quote from: TWP, p719
There was a moment of astonished silence, for the Kianene could scarce believe the bearded wretches before them could author so much woe. Then, before the first ritual declaration, the twelve men cried out, "Satephikos kana ta yerishi ankapharas!" in unison, then drew their knives and cut their own throats.

....

"Th-they said," the ashen-faced man stammered, "'the Warrior-Prophet shall... shall come before you...'"

...

When he demanded to know just who this Warrior-Prophet was, no one could answer him.

- Zsoronga quote regarding Kellhus fighting on "all fronts:"

Quote from: TJE, p371
"I think that's what the devil wanted! I think that was his trap. The provocation of rebuilding Auvanshei, followed by this mad diplomatic overture. Think of what would have happened, what a disaster it would have been, had we taken the field against his Zaudunyani hosts.

- Sorweel about the Aspect-Emperor:

Quote from: TJE, p31
For Sorweel's entire life, it seemed, the Aspect-Emperor had been an uneasy rumour from the South.

...

The Unification Wars. The Thousand Temples. All the innumerable nations of the Three Seas. And the coming of the False Prophet who preached the end of all things.

- MG offhand mentions the two dogs metaphor:

Quote from: WLW, p57
The Sakarpi tell of a man who had two puppies in his belly, the one adoring, the other savage. When the loving one nuzzled his heart, he became joyous, like the father of a newborn boy. But when the other gored it with sharp puppy teeth, he became desparate with sorrow. Those rare times the dogs left him in peace, he would tell people he was doomed. Bliss can be sipped a thousand times, he would say, whereas shame need only cut your throat once.

The Sakarpi called him Kensooras, "Between Dogs," a name that had since come to mean the melancholy suffered by suicides.

- What does Kellhus/his children think of Sorweel? (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=803.0)
- Wilshire paraphrasing some of the Excerpt - The Unholy Consult, Chapter Three (Summary) (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=465.0).
- Blackstone mentions Porsparian wiping "spit" on Sorweel's face (TJE, p449, Small Canadian Paperback).
- GJ in and out somewhere there for a small moment (never returned to sign off) sounding like he's rooting through a fridge for beer ;).
- Psatma's "Falling Disease:"

Quote from: TJE, p161
It began as it always did, with a curious buzzing in the ears, as though dragonflies swarmed about her head. Then the ground bucked and flopped like cloth thrown over a fish, and watercolour haloes swung about every living form. And she saw her, though she could not turn to look, a shadow woman, spoked in sun-silver, walking where everything and everyone exploded like clay urns, a silhouette so sharp it cut eyes sideways. A hand reached out and pressed the side of her hooded head, irresistibly gentle, forcing her cheek down to the pungent earth.

"Mother," she gasped.

The shadow held her, as though pinning her below unseen waters. "Be still, child."

...

- Yatwer in the Catacombs:

Quote from: TJE, p177
Silence. The very air seemed animate. The excavated hollows that surrounded them, hall after honeycombed hall, hummed with emptiness, the deadness of space. Watching her sisters, Nannaferi could see it slacken the last of their eyes, the comprehending, the standing underneath what they had lived the entirety of their shallow lives. The Goddess, not the name they used to sugar their lips, not the vague presence that tickled their vanity or itched the underbelly of their sins, but the Goddess, the Blood of Fertility, the monstrous, ageless Mother of Birth.

Here, lending her fury to the blood dark.

- Aside from these two quotes, I believe the only other time the Goddess explicitly expresses her agency is with Porsparian and Sorweel in WLW; feel free to quote others I might have missed.

- Lmao - At 42m I bring up that we still have yet to talk about the titular “Judging Eye” character, Mimara, on the TJE Reread Cast.

- Quote by Achamian “maybe we don’t teach adult students because...:"

Quote from: TJE, p307
He hadn't the heart to tell her the truth: that the reason the sorcerous Schools were loath to take adults as students had to do with the way age seemed to diminish the ability to learn languages.

- Missing quote: Mimara reflecting on not wanting to learn sorcery anymore (may be in WLW).

- Aporos quotes for those surprised like MG:

Quote from: Cu'jara Cinmoi, 2005

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p545
After the disaster of Pir Pahal, the Inchoroi had seduced the practitioners of the Aporos, who had been forbidden from pursuing their art. Poisoned by knowledge, they devised the first of the Chorae to render their master immune to Cunoroi magic.

- Quote regarding Aporos notation from Cuno-Inchoroi Wars TTT Glossary entry:

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p541
Overmatched by the Inchoroi and their weapons of light, the Nonmen of Viri were driven back with horrendous losses. Only Cu'jara-Cinmoi and his Ishroi Chariots saved them from utter destruction ... Eventually, all but the most powerful of the Inchoroi were overwhelmed by the valour, sorceries, and numbers of the host of Siol.

Quote from: TTT Glossary, p544
More terrible still were those few Inchoroi who ventured out into battle, hanging above the tumult, sweeping the earth with their weapons of light, apparently unaffected by the sorceries of the Ishroi. After the disaster at Pir Pahal, the Inchoroi had seduced the practitioners of the Aporos, who had been forbidden from pursuing their art. Poisoned by knowledg, they devised the first of the Chorae to render their masters immune to Cunoroi magic.

- Quote regarding "Grafts" from Pat's R. Scott Bakker interview (part 2) (http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.ca/2011/07/r-scott-bakker-interview-part-2.html) (2011):

Quote
Is Aurang special amongst the Inchoroi in his ability to use Sorcery? Or were all Inchoroi, his brother included, amongst the Few?

The Inchoroi only possessed the Tekne when they arrived in Eärwa. All of the Inchoroi are the products of successive Graftings, species-wide rewrites of their genotype, meant to enhance various abilities and capacities, such as the ability to elicit certain sexual responses from their victims (via pheromone locks), or the capacity to ‘tune sensations’ and so explore the vagaries and vicissitudes of carnal pleasure. The addition of anthropomorphic vocal apparatuses is perhaps the most famous of these enhancements.

The Grafting that produced Aurang and Aurax was also devised during the age-long C no-Inchoroi Wars, one of many failed attempts to biologically redesign themselves to overcome the Nonmen. But they had been outrun by their debauchery by this time, and had lost any comprehensive understanding of the Tekne. The Graftings had become a matter of guesswork, more likely to kill than enhance those who received them. The Inchoroi filled the Wells of the Aborted with their own in those days.

Aurang and Aurax are two of six who survived the attempt to Graft the ability to see the onta.

- Mimara seeing the Chorae with the Eye:

Quote from: TJE, p611
The Judging Eye has opened.

She feels it leaning through her worldly eyes, pressing forward, throwing off the agony like rotted clothes, snuffing fact from sight, drawing out the sanctity and the sin. With terrible fixation it stares into the oblivion spilling from her palm...

And somehow, impossibly, passes through.

She blinks on the far side of contradiction, her face and shoulders pulled back in a warm wind, a breath, a premonition of summer rain. And she sees it, a point of luminous white, a certainty, shining out from the pit that blackens her grasp. A voice rises, a voice without word or tone, drowsy with compassion, and the light grows and grows, shrinking the abyss to a rind, to the false foil that it is, burning to dust, and the glory, the magnificence, shines forth, radiant, blinding...

And she holds all... In her hand she holds it!

A Tear of God.

- Quote about God’s time being not linear/Mimara pregnant all at once (WLW, p89):

Quote
"But I do know," Achamian hastily adds, "that the Judging Eye involves pregnant women."
Mimara gawks at him through tears. A cold hand has reached into her abdomen and scooped away all warring sensation.
"Pregnant..." she hears herself say. "Why?"
"I don't know." He has flecks of dead leaf in his hair, and she squelches the urge to fuss over him. "Perhaps because of the profundity of childbirth. The Outside inhabits us in many ways, none so onerous as when a women brings a new soul into the world."
She sees her mother posing before a mirror, her belly broad and low with the twins, Kel and Sammi.
"So what is the curse?" she fairly cries at Achamian. "Tell me, old fool!" She rebukes herself immediately afterward, knowing that the Wizard's honesty would wither as her desperation waxed. People punish desperation as much out of compassion as petty malice.
Achamian gnaws his bottom lip. "As far as I know," he begins with obvious and infuriating care, "those with the Judging Eye give birth to dead children."
He shrugs as if to say, See? You have nothing to fear...
Cold falls through her in sheets.
"What?"
A scowl knits his brow. "The Judging Eye is the eye of the Unborn... The eye that watches from the God's own vantage."
A cleft has opened about their path: a runoff that delivers them to a shallow ravine. They follow the stream that gurgles along its creases—the water is clear but seems black given the gloom. Monstrous elms pillar the embankments, their roots like great fists clenched about earth. The stream has wedged the trees far enough apart for white to glare through seams in the canopy. Here and there the water's meandering course has gnawed hollows beneath various trees. The company ducks beneath those that had fallen across the ravine, trees like stone whales.
"But I've had... had this... for as long as I can remember."
"Which is my point exactly," Achamian says, sounding far too much like someone taking heart in invented reasons. He frowns, an expression Mimara finds horribly endearing on his shaggy old features. "But things are always tricky where the Outside is concerned. Things do not... happen... as they happen here..."

"Riddles! Why do you constantly torture me with riddles?"
"I'm just saying that in a sense your life has already been lived—for the God or the Gods, that is..."
"Which means?"
"Nothing," he says, scowling.
"Tell me what it means!"

- Cleric's awesome exercise of sorcery in Cil-Aujas:

Quote from: TJE, p583
And beyond, in the distance, as though peering into a well without walls, she sees Cleric shining, afire in sorcerous light. Javelins explode like birds against the curve of his Wards. Sranc throng and heave before him, cut and rent by the glittering fury of his song. Three Bashrag close with him, stump-haired obscenities that lurch untouched through weaving geometries of incandescence, each bearing echoes of the absence that pockets her left breast. The Nonman leaps out of their monstrous reach, sails into the midst of more Sranc, his sword falling in an oblique arc. Sorcerous lines mirror his every stroke, and smoke spits from everything they trace. The very air seems to shriek. White light etches the pillared hollows of the gallery, the graven vaults, the panelled surfaces, revealing a floor clotted with hosts of Sranc, aisle after aisle, packed as thick as wind-tossed wheat...

And Cleric laughs and sings and exacts his dread toll, the last heir to Cil-Aujas.

- Mimara sees the slave pens of the Emwama:

Quote from: TJE, p617
She finds herself almost whispering in his ear. "Akka. Listen to me carefully. You remember what you said? About this place... blurring... into the Outside?"

"Yes. The treachery... the betrayal that led to its fall..."

"No. That's not it. It's this place. This very room! It's what they did - the Nonmen of Cil-Aujas... It's what they did to their human slaves!"

Generations bred for the sunless mines. Used up. Cast away like moaning rubbish. Ten thousand years of sightless torment.

- Lol - I mention something about Mimara seeing skeletons in the Emwama cages that line the wall; no such bones remain in the descriptions. Well, aside the "iron bones of a dragon" (WLW, p607).
- Quote about Yatwer being the goddess of slaves:

Quote from: TJE, p527
Somehow, simply thinking her name, Yatwer, had become a kind of premonition. And it shamed him. She was the Goddess of the weak, the enslaved, and now she was his.

- MG quote about "wandering into hell" (it's stretched out over a couple pages in my TJE starting on p509):

Quote from: TJE, p511
If Cil-Aujas indeed plumbed the World to its very limit, as he had told Mimara, might they not simply wander into the precincts of Hell?

- To Madness... (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1362.msg16852#msg16852) thread quote about "building up associations:"

Madness, regarding your comment on "the maddening combinations", is this just to say that while the series contains plenty of hints as to where the series is going, the sheer number of possibilities make it near-impossible to predict?

Bakker has clearly had a story he has wanted to tell... I don't think he's lying when he says he's had the end of TSTSNBN decided for years. But the man had the patience and the stamina to tell us PON first. With TJE and WLW, he has spent five books establishing associations in our mind, building up the world.

This all becomes increasingly clear in the sixth volume. I told Bakker I likened it to him establishing the toys in the sandbox. This is finally his chance to play around. I'm glad his writing has had the chance to grow just enough with each tale.

Truth - a lesser author would have just written TUC and TSTSNBN and that would have been it.

EDIT: To be clear, it's the way he uses all of these associations in combination... it's nothing less than a mind-fuck.

- Speculative Atrocity Tales (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1149.0)
- I believe Blackstone mentions an a show-down between the Orthodox Threesie and a Zaudunyani Judge in Caraskand; unfortunately for Blackstone's guess about Lord Soter, Mr. "Steely-Eyed" Zaudunyani Judge dies, though he is immediately avenged:

Quote from: TWP, p621
The man's sparkling gaze darted from Fustaras's eyes to the club, then back.

...

He hoisted the club high, then struck. The man fell to one knee. Blood trickled across his right temple and cheek; he raised two glistening fingers to Fustaras, as though to say, See...

Fustaras struck him again. The Judge fell to the cracked cobble.

- MSJ quote about "Seeds:"

Quote from: TJE, p480
"Ishual," Celmomas said, smiling at his own wit - or lack of it. He reached for his chalice of apple mead. "That's what I call it."

Seswatha shook his head. "Is it stocked with beer or with concubines?"

"Seeds," Celmomas replied, his eyes smiling over the rim of his cup.

- Sauglish Dream without Seswatha:

Quote from: TJE, p462
The Library of Sauglish burned beneath him in his Dream, its towers squat and monumental within garlands of flame. Dragons banked about might plumes of smoke. The glitter of sorcery sparked across the heights - the blind calligraphy of the Gnosis.

Its wings threshing the air, Skafra bared corroded teeth, shrieked out to the horizon, to the whirlwind roping black across the distant plains. A rumble deeper than a final heartbeat.

And Achamian hung unseen, an insubstantial witness... Alone.

Where? Where was Seswatha?

- MSJ is wrong about Celmomas being dead before the Advent of the No-God (fights the No-God):

Quote from: TTT Glossary, Apocalypse, p517
In the spring of 2143 the No-God, summoned by means unknown, first drew breath.

...

Celmomas and his Second Ordeal were destroyed on the Fields of Eleneot in 2146.

- And though I've avoided finding this three separate times it came up in my notes  because it is in WLW (MG, MSJ, and someone else bring it up separately over the course of the Cast), I relent because it will bug me that the notes are "incomplete" by my own frightening metric:

Quote from: WLW, p517
The Goddess smiles...

CASTING CALL!

So...

If profgrape, H, geoffrobro, or Bolivar, are interested, I'd like to do a TJE Part II Cast with all or any of you four. I'd like to get to a WLW Cast too while it's fresh in the minds of the Sloggers. We have plans to do Casts for the Atrocity Tales (though, I actually think we should skip Four Revelations, given that H's introduction cast includes a fairly indepth discussion).

Also... I would like to do a general Cast in the next couple weeks for many important reasons: Grimdark Mag's forthcoming excerpt and review, Pat's Fantasy Hotlist forthcoming interview and review (and possibly excerpt but there's been little word on that), and - quite possibly - MG's bakkerfans review (8)!!!). Obviously, that Cast will look to include members who actually want to interact with those fragments of insight.

And, thankfully as I start school again next Monday, I've switched around my schedule quite a bit and will have all of the evenings free!!!

Cheers.

I might be able to Monday the 9th, around 7 Central.  The kids seem to only have one baseball game that night and it should end at 6:30.

Congrats on getting your nights back Madness!

I should be free evenings next week as well probably after 6pm Eastern. I'm likely taking some days off soon too, so earlier might work as well. Will try to stay in the loop.

Lol - H, you most certainly won't be available if you have an ARC on Monday the 9th :P.

But Excellent. I'll send out a PM after work tonight because I slept in today and have to rush off and we'll see what's good for next week.

And thanks, Bolivar, I'm really looking forward to not having these totally wasted days where all I do is wake up, go to work, have a pint after work, and come home to sleep to do it five days in a row.

A good point, initially eBay said the 10th, but the actual USPS says the 9th.  I may be totally incommunicado if it actually is in hand though, haha.

Finally listened to the cast, Blackstone's idea on Kelmomas wielding sorcery and chorae simultaneously is insane!!!

I liked the conversation about whether the gods were present in PoN or not. I used to read it like Blackstone, that the gods are becoming immanent in TAE and those are just metaphors but the reread on the slog pushed me towards MSJ's reading, that they did manifest at parts of the First Holy War. This passage in TTT sealed it for me, although I admit it's also possibly metaphorical:

Quote
And this one Scylvendi, this Utemot Chieftain. Conphas had witnessed it, as much as any of the Columnaries who′d quailed before him in Joktha. In the firelight the barbarian’s eyes had been coals set in his skull. And the blood had painted him the colour of his true skin. The swatting arms, the roaring voice, the chest-pounding declarations. They had all seen the God. They had all seen dread Gilgaöl rearing about him, a great horned shadow …

LOL @ MG's speculation on the "kid-spy" at the end of the cast

I feel like a kid skin spy has already been in the series. To me that's a the connection between the missing children and the fact that Simas had to be planted as a child in the mandate.

And is there no love for Lord Kosoter?

Open call for the last Reread Cast tonight, WLW, at 8pm EST - just message me your Skype.

Only requirements are a mic, preferably headset or ear buds, having read WLW once ever, and having NOT read a TGO ARC (the released excerpts are ok as we'll probably discuss current Bakker events at the beginning of the Cast).

Do you have an ETA on when the WLW re-read cast will be posted?

I'd be interested in participating in some kind of pre-TGO cast... I've been waiting for the WLW cast to drop before wading into the forums full-on.

Also, are the missing casts (4,6,7) just gone, or are they just not on SoundCloud?

Whenever I am not lazy, rhizome :).

I've listened to maybe the first twenty minutes and of course it has some early audio issues, which in this case I should probably be able to balance out. We're always looking for new Cast participants.

#4 GJ, SR, and myself: where I cajoled and berated the two of them into participating. The resulting cast, though, fell victim to some terrible and indeterminate whine whenever SR spoke... I've toyed with the audiofile a number of times with different programs and can never get the whine gone while still keeping the overall cast at a perceptible level.

#6 FB, GJ, Bolivar, and myself: At this point, I still hadn't paid for a recording program so everyone was downloading trials of different programs. FB was recording and hosting and about forty minutes in something happened on his end...

#7 GJ, SR, Bolivar, and myself: SR happens to be available to tap in for the above Cast. GJ recorded and hosted. Bolivar gives his "second" introduction story about finding the books and the forum. About thirty-five minutes something happened on GJ's end.

There's probably stuff worth it to chop up and release as LostCast stuff someday and it'll probably happen. But give it a year or two of contemporary releases ;).

We need to do another one. I'd like to re-do the WLW or do another one as the excerpts had just came out and their implications dominated the discussion more than WLW.

Maybe a cnaiur podcast "Tales from the Steppe" would be a good name. Not sure if you recorded us talking about Cnaiur.

I think you're going to be hard-put to do another WLW Reread (specifically) Cast, themerchant :(.

I am planning on getting ours up. Trust me - they always feel worse making them and then you listen to it and those infinite pauses and run on monologues aren't quite as long listening to them as they are living them.

EDIT: And yes, suggesting a topic, usually gets one going ;). Anyone who wants to suggest a topic only need to find people willing to partake and record it and I'll host it, though I'm always happy to be involved.

Hi, I'm a new reader (just finished the first read-through of the series), and a new member to this forum, and I have been trying to start to listen to this podcast. (first episode was excellent!)

But... Is there a reason why this isn't published as podcast on iTunes? And that it is apparently uploaded to Soundcloud with the download ability turned off??? I scanned through this thread and saw some old and expired links and attempts to publish them. The iTunes links did not work, or seemed to be Canadian-only?

Anyway... The reason for this is that I very much enjoy listening to podcasts as I'm out exercising or driving, and being able to have them downloaded on my device saves a lot in cellular/mobile data costs. And... Soundcloud charges $7/month (!!!) to be able to cache things on your phone, a cost I don't want to expend for just this podcast, no matter how excellent it is.

So - Can someone summarize the current state of the downloadability (or iTunes access) of this podcast, in case I missed something obvious? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

EDIT: Also, what happened to episodes #4, #6, and #7? They are missing from SoundCloud.

Welcome to the board, Titan :).

I think we picked soundcloud because it was one of the easier sites to use, and free. iTunes never worked out for us.

This is the first I've heard of the download thing, might be a 'paid' hosting option on our side or something, but we'll look into it. Stay tuned.

FYI, nothing we have done for the TSA community has had a fee or an advertisement that we have put on it. I'm sorry that soundcloud charges a fee for caching, but that's obviously not within our control.

Post by: Madness on June 23, 2016, 10:02:29 pm
Titan, I just looked into it all.

The download capability for our individual Soundcloud tracks is now turned on (it was previously turned off). I don't know if this avoids the cost for you (which is weird and as Wilshire says, I personally never want to charge the community for our second-order content).

Also, I figured everything out to host our RSS feed to iTunes. It says that process of approval takes anywhere between 24 hours and 2 weeks. As soon as I know, I'll update the thread and my opening post.

Thanks for the prompting. And, of course, welcome to the Second Apocalypse :).

Thanks Wilshire and Madness, I will check it out.

That is good news about the iTunes RSS, there are so many excellent 3rd party podcast players - playing downloaded MP3's on an iPhone is possible but a hassle. Thanks again!

And you might have missed my edit:
What happened to episodes #4, #6, and #7? They are missing from SoundCloud. Do I need to reach into the Outside to find them?  ;)

Lol - they are what we've come to call "LostCasts," which also includes a handful of "PreCast/PostCast" recordings.

I believe I have them explained elsewhere in the thread but:

- 4: GJ, SR, and I; I basically harangued them into a Cast and when we'd finished recording we discovered this terrible whine whenever SR spoke... I've tried a number of times to get rid of it and make it bearable but no luck.
- 6: FB, GJ, Bolivar, and I: FB was hosting and dropped out inexplicably at about 40 minutes.
- 7: GJ, SR, Bolivar, and I: immediately tried to recapture the Cast but GJ was hosting and he dropped out inexplicably at about 35 minutes.

They'll be posted one day :).

Huzzah!

Well, you precipitated the events that have seen our feed propagated through iTunes, again, finally. Who knows how long we'd have languished between yesterday and whatever random future event might have prompted me to do that otherwise ;).

Hope you enjoy them! I apologize for the file size (probably unwieldy) and our amateurishness. And if you ever feel compelled don't hesitate to reach out. New members, new disparate perspectives, are the main reason that we can keep having new and interesting Casts.

Otherwise, best way to get new Casts is to get new Casters - though, I think we can safely say that we're locked-in now. Probably won't do another Cast before general release.

So what is the shortest path to a new podcast episode? Surely there is something to discuss about TGO...  ;)
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: Madness on September 08, 2016, 04:19:48 pm
A short path is finding me more time - which I actually committed in my head to try and figure out some of this out tonight, supposing I don't have a lab today - or a whole 'nother person to edit the existing two recordings I have; one is WLW Reread Cast, one is a TGO Cast (which actually ended up being entirely about the two excerpts - Ch. 1 and Ch. 5 - and The False Sun.)

The WLW Reread Cast is particularly ambling and meandering and needs some less conversational moments later in the Cast edited out. The "TGO" Cast has some kind of pervasive noise throughout the recording (which may be background noise from one of the participants), which is the same reason Cast #4 was shelved indefinitely - because I don't have the audio-editing skill-set necessary to save them.

The shortest path to a new Cast is volunteering to be a new Caster and hopefully having one of more of the usual suspects (a growing list that we throw at dates) join in. Wilshire recording (and having his luck that is not my luck) are a bonus - though he's not been available to do so for a long minute now.
Title: Re: TSACast (SA Podcast)
Post by: Wilshire on September 09, 2016, 03:32:02 pm
I no longer have the quiet solitude of a room and a door for my desktop. Audio recordings may be difficult for me for some time - 6 months approximately.

I'm also traveling a lot for work the next month or two. While this actually provides some means of quiet recording space, hotel wifi is unstable at best, with the added demerit of not having an ethernet connection. Its a possibility to try, I can get the necessary equipment/software on my work laptop, but potentially disastrous, both for the recording and my Lord of Swans lucky streak.

That said, I think Thursday's will be my days. Sep 22nd, Sep 29th, Oct 6th, and Oct 13th. Approximately between the hours of 4pm and 8pm EST.

Maybe ;). I'm going to volunteer with the radio at school this year, for other reasons, but I should also be learning some audio editing skills :).

Yeah I think it was the first thing I asked about when I got on. I bought this fancy LED fan monitor for the front of my PC case but the audio quality seems really weak. I might just have to use different ports next time.

People should get pop filters for their chosen microphones... Though I imagine most people just use the intrinsic one in their laptop/phone/whatever, which would make that difficult.

It was a fan, I believe, and Bolivar and I even addressed it beforehand.

But there's also portions of both of the recent LostCasts that need to be edited and sewn back together, problems aside. There's a redditor who offered to help me based on his interest in the LostCasts with the audiobook narrators, I just haven't gotten around to doing my bit on the files first.

I'm not a podcaster - but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night  ;D - but I do work remote and communicate via voice chat all day with my co-workers... So similar issues would come into play. And IMO a headset (w/ microphone) - not just a standalone mic - does wonders for audio clarity. (less issues with feedback and audio loops if the mic can't pick up other voices) It also lets you hear others better and can determine easier if their audio is acceptable.

That's totally my fault, Ciogli (and apologies to themerchant who has been part of two unreleased Casts - they will not be Lost, I hope to figure that out this weekend, finally). The WLW Reread Cast and the initial TGO Cast both require some editing, into which I may literally have to interject "technical difficulties happened" because there seems to be no way to cut them so that they flow as the interruptions are too jarring. Needless to say, neither were very on topic because both Casts were spent majorly discussing the two TGO excerpts and The False Sun Atrocity Tale.

Thankfully, I've had notes done for them for months, though I'll probably have to review them again before posting.

Apologies to everyone who enjoyed listening in the past.

I think we are overdue for a podcast. I think there could be simple 30mins podcast about things we like about the series or talk about the amazing post that have been on this site in the last year. Example the post about eating bigger souls (shard souls/ hero souls) I know that could be a hour long conversation right there

Difficulties arise in finding 4 people from around the world, in different timezones, who have availability at the same time, and can actually show up when its time.

An hour podcast takes probably 5-10 man hours of work before any real editing, not to mention several weeks to hammer out a date and time.

Anyone can get a group of 3+ people without involving me or Madness at all if you don't want (sometimes we are a bottleneck for things). They don't have to even be forum members. If you are on facebook/reddit/twitter/whatever and can find a group of people, great!

Or we can start the standard process here. I'll sound the Plate.

Who's interested in doing a podcast in the next 2-3 weeks? Leave a message here or send me a PM. Obviously Geoffrobro is 1, need a few more.

You work at a recording studio? I'm... sorry. Your ears must be bleeding with the low, low quality of our casts lol. Help would be appreciated, sir.

Haha it is rough for sure... but revelation requires sacrifice.

Any suggestions to make it better to begin with would be greatly appreciated .

Sure, better equipment, I suppose one or two of us might be able to get a better mic , but that's just not likely to happen. I do some gaming, maybe I'll look into a new headset that has a decent microphone.

Anything else? Programs to use for recording, or some medium other than Skype to use?

I'm definitely down for a podcast. My schedule is a bit whacky but I should manage.

Also, if my "primary" computer is working by then (it better be if it knows what's good for it) then I could assist in recording. I have a pretty nice mic as well, and I've learned a tiny bit about general audio stuff in the last few months. Emphasis on "a tiny bit", but it's something.

We record our world of warcraft boss kills, and that includes our TS channel. I will speak to the streamers in my guild as the chat always comes out nice with the video.

We could use my guilds TS channel (I'd need to get permission from the Admin, but i'm 99.9% sure we would get permission, just need to ask him first, so we could get a channel set up with a password etc.)

TSACast - June 6/17: Madness, Blackstone, themerchant, Ciogli, and Beardfisher King (https://soundcloud.com/tsa-cast/tsacast-14-june-317-the-great-casting-ordeal)

Notes to come soon for this and the last Cast upon my return to London.

Also, I made a note at the beginning of the Cast to forewarn everyone about my microphone cackles. I'm truly sorry for my amateur abilities. I also realized after my edited opening that everyone's microphone is somehow at different volumes. I know two of the Casters are on their phones, which we've had done before without issue, but I take total blame for all these problems and the growing graveyard of LostCasts.

Apologies all. Everything I've learned about audio editing, I've learned in pieces as problems arise with these recordings. I will make sure to forward this Cast to Tivadar and the reddit fan who have both approached me offering help. If I can get a better version of this Cast up I will do so as soon as possible.

Thanks.

So cool, my peeps! Just listened to some of this ( if you want a profane corrupted intellect to contribute, I may be able to find one for ya  :D ) - there's going to be a "follow on series"? TUC won't be the last book?

Edit: At the point hearing you all talk about different points of view, various characters thinking Kel is a demon, etc. I think you're touching on one of the themes of the book - intense human conflict is ultimately a strength of humanity, driving us to greater feats if not actual evolution of consciousness. While it seems human infighting weakens us, eliminating potential contributors to defeating the Consult, the "ordeal" we put ourselves through, not accepting or believing so quickly, strengthens our resolve and can accomplish was was previously considered impossible. See how the Holy war revives after beaten down so badly by the rain and sickness once it "reconciles" the circumfixion of Kel. As Kel racks up enemies, putting himself and the fate of the Great Ordeal at risk, surviving it and bringing along his enemies into the fray, it maximizes the chance for success - the TTT.

Yes, Tao, there is a third series planned by RSB. It's known here on the Forum as The Series That Shall Not Be Named. As far as I know, there is not a publishing deal for it. So pray to what Gods you hold dear....

I think you would be great on a podcast, Tao. Some of us are planning one for Saturday/Sunday the 17th/18th. I'd be happy to keep you in the loop.

I like your speculation about Bakker's themes. I have to give it some thought, but I agree that human fallibility and weakness is valuable. The Proyas arc speaks to this.

Aw! You would consider moi? A star is born! Hee hee

Would very much like to join one, but leaving town this Friday with my older son to camp with him at Boy Scout camp in Rainey Mountain ( Clayton, Georgia, USA ) for the week. I know, not the shortest path, but it should be a blast ( a Dunyain would attend the podcast BEFORE going camping ... you know, the Darkness That Came Before ... never mind, I'm not funny like Beard ). Went with him last year as well to Camp Daniel Boone in North Carolina - I was limping from just walking around ( very steep mountain sides, gorgeous stuff ). Forgive my enthusiasm, but we sea level dwellers are amazed by mountains when we infrequently encounter them - like, whoa! They're so big! We're really going up there?

I'll be with you in spirit, old friend.

profgrape wants to put out the call for a Cast. We've previously found successful melds to occur weekday evenings at 7/8pm EST as well as in the 10am-4pm range EST on Saturday/Sundays.

Anyone is welcome, we do audio only, have a pre/post Cast discussions, and have previously used Skype (though recently a group of us got together on Discord to do a Chat - an informal version of the Casts).

Cheers. If a couple people reply with interest, it usually takes a week or so for the PM thread to decide on a date. This will be the first post-TUC Cast.

Wilshire saved all the old tracks - TSACast is back up. Hoping to have the first TUC Cast notes done today and then I may or may not post tomorrow or Monday (my hesitancy to post immediately is that - while the audio quality is about as expected as per my usual amateur output - Tivadar offered to clean it up even more for us).

So, when editing the latest podcast, when talking about Golgatterath and mentioning the horns, Madness's mic clipped 4 times... producing 4 golden horns in the waveform. Spooked me a bit.
