Title: TSA soundtrack

What should the soundtrack to TSA sound like? Imagine that you're putting together the music for a PON movie. What would it be?

You can either describe it, or link to youtube vids, or say "X should make the soundtrack", or anything. This thread is mostly for fun, and I'm also interested to hear what music other people associate with the scenes in PON.

(This thread isn't about "what do you listen to while you read", since we already have a thread for that.)

I personally have this one in mind, especially for the more apocalyptic and "revelatory" scenes of PON:

Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Requiem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHOBdibIpc0)

I first heard this track in the cartoon "Akira", and found the combo of harmonic chanting, Japanese percussion instruments, and church-style synth organs to be pretty awe-inspiring.

Lyrics are a bit hard to make out, but if you look here (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Plague-lyrics-Crystal-Castles/794BE0B03A5D35C848257A460080896B) I think you'll find them apropos.
Heck the damn song might as well be written about the inchies.

Dead Can Dance's "Return of the She-King" is another song that I'd put on a PON soundtrack, maybe for the Holy War scenes:

Trent Reznor is an interesting choice, although his catchy industrial-lite style of music doesn't fit the medieval setting of PON at all. For a pre-modern setting, you need a soundtrack that doesn't sound too glaringly modern and electronic. It's hard to tell, though, because all of Reznor's soundtracks for movies have been basically the same style.

Idk, I like the dark industrial for the Consult - suits their eldritchness somehow.

But Dead can Dance definately yes.

Reznor is growing into quite the composer - he's partially responsible for The Social Network's score.

I think that is an interesting distinction, Auriga, though a constraint I don't think I'd share in constructing a TSA soundtrack. All modern fiction is inherently anachronistic in my opinion, after all.

I wasn't necessarily thinking Nine Inch Nails when I wrote that - though, obviously, I would hope that music would influence any Reznor/PON scores. The Mark Has Been Made was the song for all the 300 trailers, ironically never appearing in the movie.

The score during the human scenes, and especially when we are being introduced to the warriors of different nation, should be appropriately "ethnic", for the lack of a better term. I love Bakker's cultures and the guy has a real knack for historical sounding names. It would be a real disservice to undermine that with a modernized score to lure in new fans, at least outside of Consult scenes.

It's all about aesthetics - whether that's expressed through the art, colors, or music. What's important is nailing a coherent, unified aesthetic for all the facets of Bakker's world. It communicates to the viewer that there is a vision here, and it is being followed. The rest will proceed from there.

Again, I'm not sure I share the distinctions.

There are few movies that do period appropriate music, let alone period appropriate sound. Beowulf & Grendel comes to mind as a worthy attempt.

And it's a very good (and catchy) soundtrack, but also a very modern-sounding one. It's very contemporary in sound. It's perfect for a movie that takes place in modern America, and clearly the same "spirit" as his Nine Inch Nails music. Just listen to this track, to see what I mean:

Obviously. And this goes double for fantasy fiction, where the fictional world is completely the product of an author who is the product of his own environment and times. It's impossible to write "period fiction", about a real or imaginary time, and not be anachronistic.

However, my point was that the (inescapable) anachronism shouldn't be so glaringly obvious that it detracts from our immersion in the imaginary world. Anachronism can be done well or horribly, like everything else. I think we can all agree that the LOTR movies would be worse if Marilyn Manson did the score.

This is a quite good idea. We already have the precedent of LOTR, which had "ethnic" themes for the Rohirrim and other cultures, so why not do the same for the Eärwan peoples?

At least the Scylvendi could have a recognizable theme, fittingly inspired by the music of real-life steppe cultures (well, whatever has been recorded of their folk music).

I agree 100%.

Also, I never imagined the Inchoroi and Consult scenes to have a "modern-sounding" industrial score. Rather, they should have completely strange and otherworldly music, with a lot of choral elements, to give a haunting "alien" sound. Something like the weird track "Primordial Germination":

Kronos Quartet.

See while I appreciate an artist's pedigree, it doesn't necessarily indicate anything more than a flavour of what they might bring creatively to a novel project like PON.

So you're saying that movies about a series of books featuring, among others, a strong theme of the deceptive and produced nature of our static forms, memes perhaps, within culture and society should reflect the proper cultural or social period and shouldn't push those boundaries...? Say... what o.O?

+1 on all these links. Making for some wicked listening.

Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet isn't a bad idea for a hypothetical TSA soundtrack.

IIRC, Bakker has some links on his blog to the music he listens to while writing fantasy. It's mostly ambient stuff, from the little I heard.

the medieval  realist/nihilist film Marketa Lazarova (about the tension and warring between christian and pagan clans in the 11 century mid Europe) is not only a perfect stylistic approach (meaning it eschews the romanticism of most medieval portrayals, or the neo-romanticism of LotR or GoT visuals) for Earwa, but the the score is a fucking masterpiece in and of itself, and is what I would probably use to temp track the TV show of TSA. :-p

This is a collection of samples of the various tracks, the first twenty seconds of this are eh, but it really fucking kicks your ass with the third selection, starting at about 48 seconds in.

That's pretty damn badass locke. Definitely has a distinct feel to it, which any score for a TSA adaptation would require.

Here's one: Imagine this throughout the entire epilogue of TWP. Harrowing as fuck, especially if the actual sound effects were very muted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnuAaKiX1sg&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnuAaKiX1sg&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690)

Another one I think fits in a weird way tonally is the soundtrack to The Proposition (one of my favorite movies ever), by Nick Cave.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX2oYPzr3jY&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX2oYPzr3jY&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7ZxXkHdJhI&list=ALBTKoXRg38BBDc3nkplAn0FsSukddVuNv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7ZxXkHdJhI&list=ALBTKoXRg38BBDc3nkplAn0FsSukddVuNv)

I'm actually a fan of intermixing a very slight modern flourish to it, like some simple guitar. Not to the entire soundtrack, but just bits and pieces for color. It can work very well if done subtly and with taste (see Valhalla Rising).

Another one (in my mind, some good Mongolian throat singing would be essential, dunno why but I've always associated it with Earwa, especially sequences with the Inchoroi or the Outside). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3moI6Hg7hs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3moI6Hg7hs) --- Mainly just that opening though, very dark and atmospheric.

This also gets that otherworldly, epic feeling, but in a more melancholy way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3QlEgnrcdk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3QlEgnrcdk)

The epic fight between Cnaiur and Sarcellus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnZt1H20_Ts&list=PL85C2887D3660C160 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnZt1H20_Ts&list=PL85C2887D3660C160)

Also, Howard Shore did LOTR so he seems like an obvious choice to include.

Heh, thanks.

Anyways I was going through my playlists and realized that this song from Star Wars Ep. 3 very much reminded me of the Inchoroi (it, too, incorporates a small amount of throat-singing).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_95r0SwPS8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_95r0SwPS8)

There's no denying that dark, mysterious, broodingly evil sound that comes from that expression (to Western ears, anyway).

Also, obvious as hell, but I honestly can't think of a single song that captures "otherworldly fantasy" as much as this from LOTR:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Y5EzvaybY&list=PL85C2887D3660C160&feature=mh_lolz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Y5EzvaybY&list=PL85C2887D3660C160&feature=mh_lolz)

It could work so many places, but I always imagine Achamian in TDTCB first arriving at Momemn and seeing the Andiamine Heights in the distance.

The Slog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3j-wqzacos&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3j-wqzacos&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690)

The Holy War taking form at the end of TDTCB: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7D5Sy8XfJE&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7D5Sy8XfJE&list=PLA6D785A4C5518690)
It just has that feel of "serious shit is about to go down", and would be so good for a cliffhanger...

Can't believe it took me this long, but tell me the first thirty seconds of this shit ain't some Dunyain OM meditative riff for reaching the Absolute. Lol - I never really did get the Gregorian chant vibe from the Dunyain but I like it. And Halo 1 soundtrack is also fantastic... honestly, it might have been on par with Halo 2 except Halo 2 got Incubus to do four original tracks; that worked out to me like Pink Floyd and Incubus having a little wee one :D.

Might as well just post that now - and enjoy a sweet half hour of bliss myself.

Buck and co. have pretty much nailed the sound of the series (especially that Proposition track, really ominous and atmospheric), but I've got a very specific sound for Seswatha's plunge into Golgotterath that I think would fit sort of well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WShknpNpHbY -> I think this really captures the hopelessness of trying to find a kidnapped lover in a place as existentially horrific as the Ark. the industrial clanging, the sweeping, almost heavenly synths (?). It really is a beautiful song, but there's a deep horror to it, like the synths are just a skin draped over something rotting and ugly (maybe not as evident if you haven't played Silent Hill 2, but this track plays while you're fighting pyramid-headed monsters that are the manifestation of the protagonist's sexual frustration)

I suspect they have the special hell for comparisons like mine, but this (http://lyrics.wikia.com/wiki/Vacuum:Pride_In_My_Religion) song is quite overcrowded with images which perfectly overlap with Bakker's narrative. I even have an itch to count them all, though it seems much like a task of extracting sense from one of Cleric's sermons.
