Title: TSA T-Shirt Contest
Post by: Madness on July 22, 2013, 06:41:23 pm
I'm getting myself some TSA apparel made (a band tour-style sweater and a circumfix hat) and I'm considering getting a few t-shirts made up in a similar style to the sweater: Who are the Dunyain? written on the front and R. Scott Bakker on the back above The Second Apocalypse Tour and The Brain Brain Tour.

What kind of contest might we run and offer the t-shirts as prizes?

I love the idea, but who would show up even if there was a contest? :P. You and me and locke and Callan... sweet lol.

I'm printing six shirts. I guess the four of us win ;).

Awesome! Well I don't know about winning, but I'd certainly buy one.

Lol, you, sir, are a sweetheart. I have no issues investing money into Bakker's non-profit advertising machine (i.e. us). I'll let you know the details of pricing and, should no contest arise (which could be something massively simple, just to generate some interest!), then perhaps you can make a donation in mine name to e-karma and I'll ship you a shirt :P.

Welcome back Jax. I know you registered earlier, but this is the first I've seen you post on the new board. Nice to know that people made the switch.

The Desert Wolf has finally made his way back to the forums too.  It took me much longer than I'd care to admit, but life always gets in the way of pursuing my passion for the Second Apocalypse.

I'd be interested in a shirt or sweater too.

what's going on here and how can i grind it to a heart-breaking halt? or play?

I've had ideas for t-shirts for some time, Quinthane, I've just never gotten around to making it a reality.

I was hoping a contest might attract some fans but it has been relatively quiet.

I recently found a pretty good shop to do the work, I literally just haven't taken the time to design the layout, pick fonts, etc (to format it for this place specifically cuts down the costs as does buying in bulk).

They also seemed mildly concerned someone might persecute them for printing the titles of copyrighted material but... I don't see an issue. Bakker's lawyers want to sue my broke ass for doing the publishers job for them and affecting free advertising, go right ahead.

some suggestions for tee-shirt slogans/bumper stickers/etc:

1) WWKD (what would kellhus do)

2) My Other Vehicle is The Probability Trance

3) "Hello, No God. It's me, Cnaiur."

4) Do you bear the Mark or are you just ugly?

5) The School of the Mandate "Step into the sky!"

Hilarious, Quinthane.  I particularly like the probability trance option.  A few more:

1) Got Trinket?
2) The Consult:  Providing Alternatives to Damnation Since Far Antiquity
3) Chorae:  For when you absolutely, positively have to salt a sorcerer

-The Few. The Proud. The Damned.

- "Dunyain for Dummies"? (Whelm your coworkers! Learn a friends PIN number by how he squints! Spice up what comes after by knowing what comes before! )

- "I mastered the Legion Within becoming a perfect instrument of the Logos...and all i got was the Absolute and this lousy tee-shirt."

I'll get on my soap-box and repeat my suggestions from the previous forum in most greedy fashion:

"My Other Shirt Is Inutteral"

"Atyersus University: Class of 4110"

Don't worry, Meyna. I wrote basically the exact same thing in the other thread in the last year ;). Quinthane should get to enjoy the suggestions there, nonetheless. That thread spawned a couple good posts in the Disseminating Bakker thread too.

Vote for No-God

Or

Vote for Inrau

(get the reference?) Or more sensibly...
"Though you may lose your soul, you shall gain the world!" Possibly with a picture of a hand reaching for a shrunken heart.

There's a 'WTF?' phrase for a T-shirt!

Someone should compile all the known rules of the slog, which might have been done somewhere already, and then, of course, make it a t-shirt.

You know it: Rules of the SLOG (http://second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=412.0)

I recently reread TJE and WLW and I really should have stickied the rules. I remember being done TJE and I had thought, shit, there's alot of rules.

I'd like "measure is unceasing"
It'd be cool if that actually wrapped around the t-shirt, from front to back, with the start of measure and end of unceasing both being visible at the front.

Possibly with a small font, faded text background of 'the logos is without begining or end' repeated.

Hi, I'm new here and I'm not sure whether this is a good thread to start, but while reading this thread, I was struck with an idea "Fate is a Whore".
Hi! Welcome to the forum. :) Yeah, that's a striking one! But you capitalised the W? Just for extra emphasis or something else? :)
Title: Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest
Post by: Callan S. on January 13, 2014, 11:16:04 pm
Aww, had a thought - have all the classic quotes like 'measure is unceasing' and shape the sentences so they all form letters, the greater letters being 'I am more'

Though it probably wouldn't jive with Bakker as it seems empowering. But given the no so subtextual construction of the phrase, is it? Is it not undermined, perhaps?

I didn't know there was a personification of fate in the series? Fair enough.

Someone should go name their dog or cat "Whore"! ;) That wont go wrong when it's time to call the pets in for din dins! :)

Well, I meant goddess Anagke, often referred to as "Whore of Fate".

And thanks for welcome, everyone.
Title: Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest

Callan you're joking right? Whore is used in place of Anagke for the whole series. Maybe its time for a re-read.

Nope, not joking. Don't remember that one at all. Apart from the glossary, is that connection between the phrase and Anagke ever made anywhere in the books?
Title: Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest
Post by: Alia on January 16, 2014, 05:59:18 am
Yes, there is. For example in "The Judging Eye" Sarl has this little rant: "If this is no coincidence, Captain, then it's the Whore. Anagke. Fate. [...] And the Whore, begging your pardon, Captain, fucks everyone in the end - everyone. Foe, friend, fuzzy little woodland creatures..."
Title: Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest
Post by: Wilshire on January 16, 2014, 02:21:43 pm
Xerius refers to the Goddess as Whore 2 or 3 times in his very first chapter (TDTCB). Akka at least once in his first chapter (In the Worm when he is talking to his Javreh spy). Honestly if you've never seen that in the books I'm not entirely sure you read them.

Here are some topics around this forum that talk about this, some of them you've actively participated in and even used Whore yourself. Perhaps you are a different Callan S? It seems you need more trauma.
http://second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=946.msg7720#msg7720
http://second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=798.msg4447#msg4447
And in here is a chapter header that specifically uses Whore as a pseudonym for Fate:
http://second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=7.msg10#msg10

(I was actually pretty surprised that my forum search for the word Whore only came up with about 30 results)

More on the topic at hand:
"IS NOT TRUTH INFINITE"
- Wutteat

Though all caps t-shirts tend to lose that oomph when there are no lower case letters to make it stand out. Sigh.
[edit] now that i posed that i seem to remember it already being suggested elsewhere. we need new books and fresh minds here or we'll just fill up the site with repeat posts, asking the same questions over and over.... doing the same thing and expecting different results...
Title: Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest
Post by: Callan S. on January 16, 2014, 11:13:16 pm
I haven't read them...as you've read them.

I have a bad memory for names (I look up how to spell the character names basically all the time), primarily I assess because I find names to merely be distractions. Red herrings. This is not a common philosophy amongst folk.

If I've refered to 'whore', it's with a lower case and I thought they were merely cursing unpersonalised chance. That said, Wil, you're jumping on me. Does it appear I am refuting the new (for me) information? Okay, there's a Anagke. I'm not refuting that and I can't think of any other reason apart from refuting to jump on anyone about the matter.
Title: Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest
Post by: Wilshire on January 17, 2014, 02:57:39 pm
I just have a hard time believing you never saw that, since Whore is used in place Anagke more often then not. I think that name is only mentioned directly in the book a few times, almost always replaced by Fate or Whore (or 'the Whore').

Didn't mean to offend though.

Cool idea for a T-Shirt meme.

"This pollution begged this cloth" written on the front and "But some pollution begs the knife" on the back with the words cut open and bleeding. T-Shirt is white with the writing grey lined black.

Then TSA on the sleeves in grey over a black trim.

Hey MG,

From memory its in TJE and I think it is a chapter excerpt. It is regarding Achamians blasphemy against our holy Prophet. I think the actual quote is:

"Some pollution begs not the cloth, but the knife, this I understand. Sin is still sin."

At work so no references but I can find it easily enough on my kindle when I get home for ya - **quote bitch bows to MG**

If anyone else can quote the verbatim before I get home it would be appreciated :)

more Bakker quotes about clothes?  something something, kellhus dons men they way we don clothes -- long sleeve t with maitha's vambraces on the forearms -- t shirt that looks like nimil? -- long sleeve t with swazonds down the arm? -- couple of snake prints just below a t's neck, with baseball cap of third snake!

i wonder if someone could make a shirt that looked like the bruise of sorcery?

My ideal TSA t-shirt would just have a graphic of the golden Horns of Golgotterath. Could be small or could cover the whole shirt. Maybe no text needed at all. Would have to make sure that one of the horns is appropriately canted. Don't know who would be up to designing such a thing though.

I did say (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=2695.msg45156#msg45156) it belonged in a T-shirt, so I'm going to nominate Wilshire's "No one hates like a Scylvendi" quote as potential T-shirt material.

Also, MSJ is right (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=2695.msg45164#msg45164) - "War is intellect" needs to be on one as well.

Malowebi also has many great T-shirt worthy quotes, but I need to hunt for the best ones before actually mentioning one here, in case I forget something.
