On the other hand akka has an onscreen dream that says the heron spear did not work.
Hmm, good catch. I totally forgot about that. Could you tell me where

As far I can tell, we saw that technology in field action:

With regards to the wathi doll, we don't know whether the soul needed to power it is of the Few or not, so it is entirely possible that its complex input require a soul for power.
You mean the soul of the person utilizing the wathi doll, correct? You're saying that in addition to the fact that only one of the few can issue a command to the wathi doll, one of the few might be required to provide it with a power source? Sorry, I just want to make sure I'm reading you right.

It's possible, but I think the evidence suggests that once activated the wathi doll can operate without a external magical power source.

Akka activates the wathi doll when he is in the agonic circle which interrupts sorcery. Whenever he tries to cast a spell the circle zaps him, interrupting the process of the casting. He manages to get quick spell out to activate the wathi doll and give a command and then the agonic circle zaps him preventing him from doing any more magic. The wathi doll than continues to act despite the fact that Akka has been zapped. I think that is the wathi doll was relying on Akka as a source of energy than the agonic circles effects would have severed the tie but I could be wrong because their is a big difference between casting a spell and maintaining it.

I can only think of two times that we are given explicit descriptions of the specific exertion that is required to maintain a casting, both of which happen with the scalpoi in the nonmen mansion. Mimara describes the weight of the flashlight-ball on her mind, and Akka describes the weight of the bar of heaven on his mind. Heres how Akka describes it:
Quote
The Bar of Heaven had burned for quite some time; Achamian could feel the picking toll of maintaining its meaning in the nethers of his soul—like holding a sum in thought for a span of hours
So maintaining a spell requires a certain metal exertion. It's a far cry from casting a spell which requires the mage to process layers of complicated semantics but it is still appears to be a distinct exertion of concentration.

My guess would be that the agonic circle's zap would interrupt that concentration. I guess it's possible that the circle only interrupts the complex mental gymnastics of an actual cant, and not the much lesser exertion required to maintain a spell but I doubt it.

In any case, I don't see why the wathi doll would require energy from a mage. It's definitely possible to create artifacts that don't require constant energy input. Many of them act without a mage as an energy source. Whores shells, the barriers, chorae (ooh that's another example of a magical artifact that works for the non-few for answer to your first question)

Yes, it is possible to craft sorcerous objects that work for mundane humans but if you want your artifact to be able to take sophisticated inputs than you are probably going to need a sorcerer to wield it.

The whores shell proves that you can create artifacts that will work for normal people. It's simple and it doesn't take any inputs from its user, it doesn't even have an off on switch but it doesn't have to you can just take it off. I see no reason that you couldn't use the same principle on grander artifacts. The false sun for example, It doesn't go off when Titirga puts it down and walks away so you could clearly just have a Mage turn it on and give it to a normal person.

However the times we have seen artifacts that with more sophisticated interfaces be used, it has always required the user to be one of the few. Akka uses the waithu doll to test whether kellhus is one of the few for this reason.

So I guess the question is can you create a non magical interface for your magical item. I would imagine that you could. The waithu doll, once activated, is obviously capable of perceiving the mundane world, so a proxy should be entirely capable of picking up mundane inputs and interpreting them as "commands" for what the artifact is supposed to do.

Seems reasonable. Once the magic is broken, its just a physical barrier...
Why not just through a Chorae at it then?

Agreed, I think that's a real mystery presented by this. But that problem arises regardless of whether it's a sorcerous artifact or just a standard spell, right? Either way, a chorae should should unravel the magic no problem.

Lol there is a lot of text in this spoiler

Mind the subforums.

Oh damn, my bad. Sorry :(

I wrote a bunch in response to you wilshire but its spoiler heavy.

(related but not a spoiler)
I would bet that the glamour was produced by a magical artifact. I don't know if there is a solid consensus on this but I suspect that as soon as a sorcerer stops performing his cant, the sorcerous effect decays fairly rapidly. I've been assuming that the only way for magical effects to be maintained without constant spellcasting is through the use of artifacts. I could totally be wrong about this this though, I haven't really tried to think of a counter example yet.

So, how to explain the Inverse Fire?
It's tecknology... How do our computers allow us to image a nebula light years away?

Yeah I definitely think it's tech not an artifact of sorcery.

One idea I was kicking around for a while was that the inverse flame was accidentally created while the inchoroi were designing some kind of cryo stasis technology for space travel. They developed the technology to put someone into a state of suspended animation and then resuscitate them. The suspended animation was effectively death and the person's soul was thrust into hell and than yanked back out when they were resuscitated. All of their test subjects came out of deep freeze screaming about hell and damnation. Some evolution of that technology could be the inverse flame.

Ultimately I don't actually think that that is how the inverse flame works but I bet it is in the same vein. Tech that accidentally leverages some metaphysical trick. It will undoubtedly be a super clever metaphysical trick knowing Bakker. Maybe there is a hint in the name?

In any case I think my idea provides at least an example of how pure tekne could create a window into hell.

I could be totally wrong but I think the stonehags hunted other scalpoi to steal the scalps that they had already collected

drahharrow! i think i'm missing something! is this metaphysics + sranc meat something something?

I got lost in semantics so I never really said anything of note. I'll try and fix what I was going to say though at some point.

Paintings are geared towards our specific anatomy. They rely on color and contrast and a certain scheme of stylization that works for us. If memory serves, humans have very powerful but specialized sense of sight. So if you were to stack us up against other animals we have superior sight to pretty much anything in the narrow domain of light that we specialized in. I have no problem imagining that nonmen just can't  process painting the way we can. Someone earlier drew a comparison to dogs not being able to really process television.

We can't decode the information in a dogs urine scent markings. I feel like its the same thing.

Yeah, it's difficult to separate the two. Personally I find them more interesting if many of their more alien traits are innate and not a result of the womb plague. I lean towards this weird form of agnosia and their remote mood both being innate.
