Title: Book deals and purchases
Post by: SilentRoamer on August 30, 2014, 06:20:39 pm
Just thought I would start a general thread for Book Deals and Purchases. Interested to know what people are buying and any special deals in stores or any electrical retailer they find. I am UK based but please post wherever you are - please even reccomend the bookstore down the road.

---Purchases---

Ok so today I went trawling through the Works Store, the local market bookstalls and charity shops which I do every 2-4 weeks. I bought the following:

Ursula K Le Guin: The Left Hand of Darkness - Bought this as I have seen it recced. Nice to get in a charity shop.
Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Martian Tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs 1: A Princess of Mars - Bought this for kicks after watching the John Carter movie.
Roger Zelazni: Nine Princes in Amber - Lovely to get the first book in a series at a charity shop.
Brian Aldiss: Moreau's Other Island - Bought Helliconia Spring so may as well get more by the same author and keep my eye out for other Helliconia Cycle novels.
Stephen Donaldson: Daughters of Regals and other tales - I like Donaldson so dont mind a few shorts and what will probably be a novella.
Philip Pullman: The Goldan Compass - Have the other two and my copy was borrowed out never returned.
Paul Hoffman: The Left Hand of God - Nice cover art and a good blurb.
Maurice Druon: The Iron King Praised by Martin.
R. Scott Bakker: The Darknes that Comes Before Bought it to lend to someone else so they can get into TSA. Then they can return it as my other TDTCB was loaned out.

I saw quite a few others that I will be buying the next time I go for a trawl assuming they are still there. There was an R.A. Slavatore Forgotten Realms - a huge fat hardback compendium of the Drizzt ones in really great condition, there were another 4-5 from the charity stores. The wife is such a pain... god love her, if I was on my own I would have bought at least 8 more.

Anyway all of these came in at under £10: some in great condition and others ok, just old and slightly yellowed over time - perfectly readable though.

---Deals---

So the deals which I didn't partake in but will in the next few weeks - from the Works Store in the UK you can get:
David Gemmell Waylander with a new cover art (all of the set together look nice shelved with this cover art - its a white one if anyone is interested ill search and link). £1.99
Dan Simmons: Hyperion with SFClassics cover art (crappy looking) but still a great book and if you have it already its good as a loaner. £1.99
Terry Brooks: The Dark Legacy of Shannara 2: Bloodfire Quest. (They were selling the first one last year). £1.99
They have a deal on 3 for £5 which is a cracking deal, includes the above and a lot more if you are into other things.

Ok so bought some more books. As usual trawled some charity stores and the local market booksellers who have a hit list of authors for me and some new things had popped up. :)

Far Horizons Edited by Robert Silverberg. Stories from: Ursula K. Le. Guin, Joe Halderman, Orson Scott Card, David Brin, Robert Silverberg, Dan Simmons, Nancy Kress, Frederik Pohl, Gregory Benford, Anne McCaffrey and Greg Bear. - Looks like a decent collection of authors most I have read so hopefully some good shorts.
Roger Zelazny: Trumps of Doom - Another in the Amber series.
Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials#1: The Amber Spyglass and His Dark Materials#2: The Subtle Knife  - Both the same covers as the book in the previous post so I have matching books now.
H.G.Wells: War of the Worlds - Couldn't resist as I have never read this.
Bernard Cornwell: Saxon Tales#6: Death of Kings - I have some of this series but all different covers and incomplete.
David Gemmell: Stones of Power#1: Ghost King and Stones of Power#2: Last Sword of Power - Both old matching covers so a no brainer.
Maggie Furey: The Shadowleague#1: The Heart of Myrial and The Shadowleague#2: Spirit of the Stone - I read the Artifacts of Power series when I was a lot younger by the same author and also Heritage of the Xandim and enjoyed both so I will give these a try. All set in the same verse.
Hugh Howey: Wool - Seen some good reviews of this and a sucker for post apoc settings.

All of these came in at under £11 so very happy that I hardly spent anything and got a fairly good addition to my collection.

Nice little haul today.

T. H. White: Sword in the Stone - Nice addition to the childrens section, quite an old book. This is the first in the tetralogy which became the Once and Future King. This copy may end up being supplanted by the complete tetralogy.
Stephen King: The Dark Tower #1: The Gunslinger - I don't have much Stephen King so nice to get the first in a series. I'll pick up some standalones as well hopefully this year to add.
Leonord Nimoy: I am Spock and William Shatner with Chris Keski: Star Trek Memories - I have enjoyed a couple of documentaries involving Nimoy and Shatner and have enjoyed both of their commentaries so thought these might be a nice read.

Under £2 for all because the two Trek hardbacks were 30p each and in mint condition, absolute bargain.

Ok so had a quick run out to a local car boot. Not a great selection today, think the overcast skies stopped some of the booters. I am also going to add on the conditions of the second hand books I buy. Nice to keep a record.

Terry Brooks: Tanequil - Had this lent it out. A replacement. Brand new condition.
Terry Brooks: High Druids of Shannara #1: Jarka Ruins - One of the few Terry Brooks I don't have. Brand new condition.
Stephen King: The Dark Tower #4: Wizard and Glass - Have book 1 so filling in the series. Decent condition.
Wilbur Smith: The Power of the Sword - Generally like Wilbur Smith and never read this one. Decent condition.
Kate Elliot: Crossroads #1: Spirit Gate - Have read the first two in this already but borrowed out my book one so a replacement. Already read this upto book 2 I think - not a big fan even if it is fairly well regarded by some. Good condition.
Andrzei Sapkowski: The Last Wish - This is a Polish author with english translation. Thought to try a fantasy translation as never done it before. Brand new condition.

2 of the books were 10p and the other four were 25. So £1.20 in total. Great bargains.

So many books for almost nothing. It appears that I need to find better book dealers.

There is another big Half-Price Books (HPB) warehouse sale, this time in Cincinnati. Going to hit it up. Drop off a ton of bookmarks, and hopefully get some good books

Every book is going to be $2 or less

I'm going to need to compile a list of authors/titles to look for. Though its hard to find much since they aren't sorted except for genre, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy are always thrown together. To make matters worse, mass-market paperbacks are not sorted in any way .

I already attended an event like this earlier this year for HPB and it was well worth it. If anyone is in the US, you should check their calendar (http://blog.hpb.com/hpb-blog/category/events) and see if they are having anything in your area (they have a store in Phoenix...). They appear to be annual events, but they only release a "store events" list for the current month, so you'll have to check it somewhat often.

I plan to post my purchases for this sale and the last after this weekend.

Nice little haul over the weekend:

Stephen King: The Dark Tower #7: The Dark Tower
- Been seeing these around and fairly hopeful I can build the set without buying new. 1, 4 and 7 so far. Big Hardback. Good condition.
Peter F Hamilton: Fallen Dragon - Nice standalone I have read but lent out my copy. Big Hardback. Good condition.
Peter F Hamilton: Nights Dawn #3: The Naked God - I don't have any of the Nights Dawn trilogy now - not sure what happened to them so buying them again. Big Hardback. Good condition.
Stephen Deas: The Adamantine Palace - Seen this in Waterstones and WHSmiths so thought I would buy it at a bargain price. Positive blurb from Abercrombie on the front. Small Hardback. Good condition.
J.K. Rowling: Harry Potter #6: The Half Blood Prince - Last Harry Potter I needed to complete my collection again after lending them all out a few years ago. Not great condition as the edgeing is coming away from the binding - nothing a bit of book glue won't resolve though.
David Gemmell: Waylander #3: The Hero in Shadows - A book cover I don't have (new updated cover that are mostly available now - Bantam Press 2000). Great condition.
David Gemmell: Stones of power #2: The Last Sword of Power - A book cover I don't have (old outdated cover I don't see often - Century Hutchinson Limited 1989). Great condition.

All of the books were 50p with the exception of HP which was 10p so the grand total is £3.10. Nice bargains as usual.

Should have some good purchases coming in towards the end of the month as I am visiting a few of the more out of the way sellers.

Alas, they nearly ran out of SF/F books before I got there. It was a three day event and I got there midway through day 2 :/.

Only ended up with:
Geoffrey A Landis - Mars Crossing - Very Good dust jacket over Very Good hardcover, very minor imperfections on both. First edition, though since it was $2 I'm sure its not difficult to find. Picked it up because its a Hugo/Nebula award winner.

Terry Brooks - The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Ilse Witch -  Near Fine dj/cover, slight tear on cover, extremely minor shelf wear. First edition. Grabbed this one because I couldn't find The Sword of Shannara and I didn't want to leave with just one book. Besides, it has an incredible cover on both dj and hardcover, so I couldn't resist. $2.

Not really sure how SR gets books for just a few cents a piece, I'll have to try harder. (USD ($) is only 1.3x GPB (£))

Lol. Those Japanese folks also have a word for literally working yourself to death(do not remember it though). You die in your office so to speak.

Americans use "drive by shooting" as a supposedly different way of killing someone, which is also kind of funny.

Hmmm, yeah I think SR has tsundoku, and he is sucking me into his delusions.

As long as I have the shelf space I will continue to buy books. When I run out of space completely I'll move to a bigger house.   ;D

I have the Isle Witch Wilshire, which cover version do you have? http://www.hour25online.com/Hour25_Ilse_Witch_Covers.html (http://www.hour25online.com/Hour25_Ilse_Witch_Covers.html) top or bottom?
Title: Re: Book deals and purchases

Top one. DJ is semi-transparent so you can see the artwork that is printed on the hardcover. Are you sure that doesn't just show the front/back of the same book? The bottom art looks familiar, guess I'll check when I get home to be sure.

I really like how they did it. Whoever came up with that deserves what he's getting for commission.

Nah they're different covers Wilshire, both are the front cover with no back cover shown - I have seen both versions side by side at  abook store and bought the cooler one.

I have the top one as well, my DJ isn't transparent but has a cool S for Shannara on the spine. Yeah its a great looking book.

Just checked, and its the same book. Front cover is the top photo, back cover is the bottom cover.

Yeah I looked at mine on the weekend and you are right, they are the same book! What I thought was the front (mostly white - snow landscape) is actually the back and the front is actually the more fertile landscape - as you have said.

Big S and Shannara on the side :)

Awesome cover still :)

Day off of work and went on a general shopping spree in the town centre around the town and all the market stalls and there were some shops open I don't usually get  to on a weekend so got a great haul. Had to put in some extra work with the wife for this!

£2 each at a charity store. All matching softbacks in good condition with slight wear. Not particularly cheap for a charity store.

Isaac Asimov: Second Foundation - 1964 Avon Books. Small book in good condition for its age, much getter condition than Lucifers Hammer.
Frederick Pohl: Gateway - 1978 Ballantine Books. In good condition white line running vertically down the right hand side half a cm from where the spine starts. The page opens on the line rather than on the spine, other than that its in decent condition.
3 for £2 on a maket stall, the guy had some other old books but not in good enough condition, the Niven/Pournelle one was close but I like their stuff and haven't read this.

David Eddings: Seeress of Kell - Weird red cover on this book in good condition with slight wear - random number in a random series, ill fill them in eventually.
Stephen King: The Dark Tower #6: The Song of Susannah - Great condition. New cover art I have on 4 of them now.
Eddings 10p, Stephen King 50p in a charity shop.

Neal Asher: Voyage of the Sable Keecher - No Asher in my collection yet and still to be read so a nice addition, probably part of a set.
Brent Weeks: The Night Angel Trilogy #1: The Way of Shadows - Almost new quality hardly been touched probably read once.
2 for £1 from a charity shop.

Max Brooks: World War Z - Softback in great condition, probably read once. Im a sucker for post apoc.
Neil Gaiman: Ocean at the End of the Lane - Hardback in great condition, probably read once. I have wanted to read Gaiman for a while.
£2 each from a charity shop.

Ann Leckie: Ancillary Justice - Seen a thread on the other forum about this but not read it, hooked by a fantastic blurb.
£7.99 brand new from Waterstones.

Should fill the nice space I have on my shelf. :) Really happy with the older Sci Fi I got as I love picking that up.

Well when I retire in a few decades I might have enough to set something small up - I just fear for the loss of all the lovely books.

Eventually though I am going to have to start buying outside of genre specific SFF as I will end up owning most of the more highly well known/acclaimed authors collected works. I do already buy some other stuff but few and far between - most non SFF were presents from others.

MrG has been given some books so I am going to edit the title to include given books as well so he can get his lazy a$$ over here!

Ok so it was my birthday last week and I got a Waterstones voucher for £20 - love getting brand new books :)

Peter F Hamilton: Chronicle of the Fallers #1: The Abyss Beyond Dreams - Really looking forward to this book as I am a big fan of Peter F. Hamilton and I really love the Commonwealth trilogy. Big Hardback with an awful, generic, shiny gold cover that looks more like a Star Trek teaser poster with a random face. Cost £12 after the £8 discount
George R. R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire #2: Clash of Kings - I already have Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords 1: Steel and Snow and this is the same cover type. £9.99
Ann Leckie: Imperial Radch #2: Ancillary Sword - Liked the first one enough to read the second one, really hope the story goes in a particular direction. £8.99 but it was buy one get cheapest half price on this and CoK so only £4.50

Also popped to the local market trader who keeps his eyes out for me:

Kurt Vonegut Jr: Cats Cradle - 1970 print. Small softback in decent condition, general wear no damage. Cover for this is red and the outside of the pages are all tinted blue so it is really weird looking, the pages are normal colour inside just on the odd edges. 60p
Roger Zelazny: Roadmarks - 1981 print. Small softback in decent condition, general wear no damage. 50p
Fred Hoyle & John Elliot: A for Andromeda - 1963 print. Small softback in decent condition, general wear no damage. 50p
Robert Heinlein: Starship Troopers - 1967 print. Small softback in decent condition, general wear with a bend mark on the lower left front cover :( Perfectly readable.50p
Robert Silverberg: Silent Invaders - 1978 print. Small softback in decent condition, general wear with a bend mark on the lower left front cover just same as the book above! :( Again perfectly readable. 60p
Robert Silverberg: Lord Valentines Castle - 1981 print. Softback in good condition, general wear no damage. 50p
Brian Aldiss: Super-State - Small softback in very good condition almost no wear. £1.00

Decent haul overall and a few of these tickle my interest enough to jump into my near future reading list. Hamilton especially so.

Where would they be shipping from?

EDIT:
When you ship books, make sure to ship them under the "book rate". Makes it significantly cheaper than anything else.

Hey Locke,

Thanks very much.

I am interested in all of the fiction you have. Might be more expensive to ship over to the UK than I can get the books for though - I will see what everyone else thinks and if others want them I am happy with that.

Title: Re: Book deals and purchases

I'd definitely like Stranger in a Strange Land

If there are no other takers, I'd take Anathama as my 2nd.
To be greedy, Shaman's Crossing as a 3rd.

Depending on the cost to ship and other people's interest of course, but those are the ones I'm interested in.
Thanks for the offer locke.

For the biggest book, via USPS media mail, its <$4 per book for me, so entirely worth it for all 3, and I'd also take Cryptonomicon since no one else seems to care.

Let me know what you'd like me to do moving forward. Send me a PM or email and I'll get you the information you need.

Thanks again.

A few purchases today:

Gene Wolfe: Operation Ares - Small SB not in good condition. Cover is fine and all pages are fine but maybe a block of 50 pages has come loose from the binding, I will repair this book though as I did really want it.
50p from a charity store.

Richard Dawkins: The God Delusion - SB in great condition. Probably read once. Dawkins seems to polarise people so I thought I would read this.
50p from a charity store.

Gail Z. Martin: The Fallen Kings Cycle #1: The Sworn - SB in great condition with Mylar. "Withdrawn for Sale" Stamped on the second page lol. Very random book with a generic looking cover. Never heard of this author so thought I might chance it.
50p from a charity store.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke - FE (very good condition)
The Divine Invasion - Phillip K Dick - BCE [book club edition] (good condition, CJ with some folding/marking)

Had a 50% off coupon for both, so they were each about $2.50

love Johnathan Strange sooo much!  the audiobook is great too--read by Simon Prebble.  Wilshire, you like audiobooks right?  i just found an app for free audiobooks--i think it's just called Audiobooks.  it's a lot of public domain classics like A Christmas Carol and such.  3000 titles!  i haven't used it yet, but i have high hopes!

Pretty cool MG. I've been wanting to get Jonathan Strange ever since you recommended it. I think my fiancee is going to read it before me though, since Malazan is taking some time :P.

lol Malazan is a monster. I haven't read Jonathan Strange yet - it didn't appeal to me for some reason when I saw it on the shelves but with a rec from MG I might have revise my position.

Ok so some nice purchases:

Frank Herbert: The Eyes of Heisenberg - 1972 print. Small SB in good condition.
50p from my usual market trader.

Joanna Russ: The Female Man - 1977 print. Small SB in good condition. Nebula winner and i was interested in the gender exploration in both this and Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin after reading Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice.
50p from my usual market trader.

Mervyn Peake: Titus Alone - SB in good condition.
80p from my usual market trader.

Mervyn Peake: Gormenghast - SB in very good condition.
£1 from a charity store.

Robin Hobb: Shamans Crossing
- SB in good condition. Can't believe that this was in a charity store after Locke offering it. Awesome.
£1 from a charity store.

Poundland the UK store where everything is.... you guesed it: £1!

Alastair Reynolds: Blue Remembered Earth - Hardback with DJ.

Peter F Hamilton: Manhattan in Reverse - Hardback with DJ.

goddamnit i love Gormenghast!  sentence by sentence and character by character this thing is monster of eloquence.  i think the first one is named Titus Groan, but i think you *could* read them out of order.

it's a bit weird because the first book is named TG, but he's just a baby and the second book is named Gormenghast even tho TG himself is the emerging star.  be ye warned! Titus Alone is way different!   a lot of it has to do with his declining health.

this is how we know the world is cursed, that Peake was taken from humanity with so many Gormenghast books left unwritten

Yeah I have really wanted to read Gormenghast for a while. I saw Gormenghast in the charity store and I knew that my local market book trader had Titus Alone so I just need Titus Groan now and then I have all 3 - trader keeping his eye out for me. I think I will wait for the first one and then read them in order. I hate jumping into anything out of sequence.

Really good having a market trader who has a list of requests to find for me! He comes up golden quite a lot.

MG - Where is thy Seminal Update!?!?

Oh man, my time is burning up like something that burns up fast and is time. I promise i will! All these goshdarn 1800's tomes laying around! Disorder! Even got something bizare written by a minor princess :P

Btw, there is some book out there called Titus Again or something? It was just written recently by his wife and i hear its not worth it. If u make it all the way to the end of Titus Alone, lets cry about it together, beat our chests, drink and howl about the lonely noble freedom of it all!

Yeah I am on familiar terms with my local second hand book market trader. He has a list of authors/titles and knows the sort of stuff I like. Often when I go to him he has something at the back he keeps for me. I do buy a lot of books from him!

Maybe he has people buying books for him, so like Im the 3rd purchaser by proxy.

I think this guy buys them in bulk on Ebay or goes to some secretive book society where they have all old sci fi- you know the sort of places with hoods, masks and rituals involving incense and the entrails of small animals.

David Gemmell: Waylander - SB in great condition. Same cover type as the Waylander II I picked up last week. You can never have anough Gemmell and this will make a nice loan copy.
Suzanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - SB in great condition. This is the red cover with the bird and is slightly better than the one with the cat. MG and many other have rec this.
Michael Moorcock: Corum: The prince in the Scarlet Robe - SB in great condition.
3 for £1. Incidentallly this is the same place as I got The Blade Itself from last week and next door to a large library so I am wondering if they get books donated from the library. This is the place that had all the Star Wars books - all of them had gone by today, a lady said someone came in and bought the lot - which I intended to do today. Scoundrel.

Stephen King: The Dark Tower #3: The Waste Lands - SB in great condition. Only need Wolves of Calla now and I have the whole Dark Tower series.
£2 from British Heart Foundation.

Robin Hobb: The Liveship Traders #2: Mad Ship - SB in good condition. This is the same cover as the one I got last week.
£1.50
Robin Hobb: The Liveship Traders #3: Ship of Destiny - SB in good condition some minor wear. Different cover set to the other two.
£1.00
Both from my usual market trader - I knew he had these but havent bought them as I needed book 1 which I found last week.

Raymond E. Feist & Janny Wurts: Empire Trilogy #1: Daughter of the Empire - SB in good condition, minor wear. I already have the whole series but I really like this series and I only have one copy so this can be a loan copy - plus its a different cover, if I was recommending any of Feist these 3 would be among them.
Trudi Canavan: The Black Magician Trilogy #1: Magicians Guild - I have read all of these series by Canavan so it's just some filler.
Lois McMaster Bujold: The Vorkosigan Saga #12: Komarr - HB with a cool DJ cover, some minor wear.
50p each abslute bargain from a market trader.

Small purchase today:

Iain M. Banks: The Hydrogen Sonata - SB in great condition. Such an awesome title.
25p
Valery Leith: Everien #: The Company of Glass - SB in great condition.
25p
Robert Jordan: The Wheel of Time #7: A Crown of Swords - HB in good condition. DJ also in good condition. Not sure if I have this as I think I have one of the later volumes missing and couldn't remember which one, some I have multiple copies. Hopefully it was 7 I needed.
50p

I think I am going to have to do a full inventory of my books so I stop buying the same books twice.

Purchased through amazon 2 used copies of TDTCB (HC), about $7 each. I will be evaluating them for potential candidates to be chopped up and re-bound in leather.

Won an ebay auction for House of Chains (Tor 2006 HC), $6 after shipping. Somewhat bullshit because the bid was for $1, and shipping was $5. It does not cost $5 to ship a book my media mail.. but whatever, 6 is still a good price for the version I was looking for.
Title: Re: Book deals and purchases

ebay book is the wrong size D: . Now it doesn't match. Probably a full inch larger than the others.

I did find Bonehunters for $5, looks new and probably unread, in the correct hardcover size and publishers. I will continue to hunt for House of Chains.

I hate that Wilshire, my covers so far of Adrian Tchaikovsky Shadows of the Apt series has the same problem, books 1-6 and 8-9 are softback same cover type all same size, 7 is exactly the same cover type but an inch larger.... so annoying.

At the moment completing sets in the same cover version is less important to me than just completing sets but it's still really really nice to have a uniformity to a series/author.

Ok well Christmas was very strange and suspicious.... I normally get a load of book vouchers/books from all sides of the family as part of my presents, usually between £50-100 combined. So I buy new books to add to the collection every Christmas. Alas this year everyone got me something different and I did not get any book vouchers at all - maybe the whispering wife? However she did get me a book which only doubles my confusion...

Star Wars: A Visual History - Nice big book from the wife, photographic paper all the way through and looks really interesting. Not a book I will read end to end but something I will pick through.

Peter V. Brett: The Painted Man
- SB in good condition.
10p from a car booter. Rude not to.

Anne McCaffrey: Talents of the Earth #2: Pegasus in Flight - SB in good condition. Awesome as I got the first a few months back and it was from the same charity store, hopefully someone is reading the set and will donate the 3rd. Matching cover set and type to #1.
Bernard Cornwell: The Grail Quest #1: Harlequin - I bought books 2 and 3 a few months ago from a large bearded gent at a car boot sale on a sunday morning on the rear entrance to the stand (thanks memory). 2 and 3 are both large HC and this is SB but it is in perfect condition and same cover type.
£1.99 buy one get one free from a charity store.

James S. A. Corey: The Expanse #1: Leviathan Wakes - SB in good condition. Awesome to grab this title as it is recommended by a lot of people I know online. This jumps immediately into my short term reading list.
£2.50 from British Heart Foundation.

David Gemmell: Lion of Macedon - SB in good condition. Can never resist a Gemmell. I have Dark Prince as I bought that recently but fairly sure I have this already.
£2.50 from the British Heart Foundation.

Bernard Cornwell: The Last Kingdom - SB in good condition. Pretty sure I already own this in a black and white cover type and if I do this cover type is much nicer.
J. R. R. Tolkien: The Hobbit - SB in good condition. Nice little book in the same style cover art as a Silmarillion copy that I have (Tolkiens old hand drawing as cover art and some inside).
Eragon: Christopher Paolini - SB in good condition. Never read and don't intend to read but the guy at the market I trade with will trade me this for an old Sci Fi.
3 for £1 at a charity store.

Joe Abercrombie: The First Law #1: The Blade Itself - SB in good condition. Awesome another copy of First Law although this is the much better cover type, the one which is like a bloodstained map.
Garth Nix: Across The Wall - SB in good condition. Short stories with some set in the Abhorsen world. I own all of the Keys to the Kingdom series but nothing else from Nix.
Stephen King: Insomnia - Stephen King seems obligatory in second hand and charity stores - normally awful copies though. SB in good condition.
3 for £1 at a charity store.

Really please with the Leviathan Wakes and a better cover type of The Blade Itself.

First time I have been into the local town since Christmas, snowy and rainy today so all the outdoor markets were closed.

Trudi Canavan: The Magicians Apprentice - HB with DJ in excellent condition probably read once.
Trudi Canavan: The Ambassadors Mission - HB with DJ in excellent condition probably read once.
Pretty sure I have at least one of these - will need to check.
T. H. White: The Once and Future King the complete volume - SB in decent condition with general wear.
Arthur C. Clarke: 3001 The Final Odyssey - HB with DJ in excellent condition probably read once.
Adrian Tchaikovsky: Shadows of the Apt #2: Dragonfly Falling - SB in good condition with general wear.
Adrian Tchaikovsky: Shadows of the Apt #5: The Scarab Path - SB in good condition with general wear.
3 for £1 (£2 total) from a charity store which is ridiculous and why I donate so many items to this particular store.

Adrian Tchaikovsky: Shadows of the Apt #3: Blood of the Mantis
- New SB.
10p from The Works stock clearance sale.
Dan Simmons: Hyperion - New SB. (SF Masterworks edition with a crappy cover but the guy from work likes SF and its a great lend item.)
£1 from the Works stock clearance sale.

EDIT: The Shadows of the Apt are the same cover types and sizes as I have already.

Ok well a few buys over the last 10 days or so.

Michael Moorcock: The History of the Runestaff #1: The Jewel in the Skull
- Hilarious looking 1973 cover edition. SB with general wear.
Frank Herbert: The Dragon in the Sea - 1979 print SB with general wear.
Harry Harrison: The Stainless Steel Rat Saves The World - Think its the 1976 print. SB with general wear.
3 for £1 in a bargain bin.

Robert Heinlein: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - 1974 print SB with general wear.
Brian Aldiss: The Moment of Eclipse - SB with general wear.
Ursula K. Le Guin: The Dispossessed - 1973 print SB with general wear.
Poul Anderson: The Long Way Home - 1975 print SB with general wear.
50p each from my usual market trader.
Robin Hobb: The Farseer Trilogy #3: Assassins Quest - SB in good condition, minor wear. Completes a set.
£1 from the same trader.

John Marco: Tyrants and Kings #2: The Grand Design- So strange to get this after Madness pimped it - although we discovered I have the awful cover version while he has a decent one! Large SB in "good" condition as much as the term can be used about a book with a cover so hideous.
£2.50 from the British Heart Foundation.

Brian Jacques: Tales of Redwall #15: Triss - SB in good condition. Now this has a nice cover. Gold embossed writing and a nice colour and artwork - all of the Redwall books I have have some gold embossing and nice artwork.
Scott Lynch: The Gentleman Bastards #1: The Lies of Locke Lamora - SB in good condition.
3 for £1 from a car booter or 50p each, couldn't find a 3rd the rest of the stuff was so bad - two nice finds though.

How much is it to ship books from the Shire to the desert, I wonder?  Pretty sure it would be cheaper to rent from your library than it is to buy and never reread.
Title: Re: Book deals and purchases

Because of the two way shipping - even using the cheaper and slower option of surface mail I think the cost would end up being prohibitive.

Otherwise I would gladly let the wet knowledge of the Shire flow to the Desert.

Couple of grabs:

David Gemmell: Rigante #3: Ravenheart - Well I can never resist a Gemmell. SB in great condition.
£2.00 from British Heart Foundation.

Brandon Sanderson: The Stormlight Archive #1 Part #1: The Way of Kings - Kind of annoyed that it is only Part 1. I am going to either have to find Part 2 or the whole compilation in a big HB. SB in good condition.
£3.00 from British Heart Foundation.

Jim Butcher: Dresden Files: White Night - SB in brand new condition.
Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson: Paul of Dune - This covers the years between Dune and Dune Messiah. I doubt I will read this, if I did it would be after the main series and probably after some of the other EU works. SB in great condition.
Buy 1 get one free £2.25 for both.

Couple of purchases - new ones as well!

George R. R. Martin: Game of Thrones: A Storm of Swords Part II: Blood and Gold
- Nearly have all of the Game of Thrones series now. Think I have 1 or 2 missing. SB matches all of the set I currently have.
Joe Abercrombie: Shattered Sea Trilogy: Half a King - Thought I would pick this up. SB.
It was buy one get one half price from WHSmiths so it was £9.99 for GoT and £8.99 for Half a King. £14.50 for both.

Robert Jordan: Conan Chronicles 2 - New softback on clearance.
Guess Waterstones were just clearing stock. 0.99p :)

Couple of purchases:

Frank Herbert: Children of Dune - HB in great condition. This is the 1981 first edition hardcover. Wilshire - we need to talk more about identifying print versions etc. as I want to identify this book. I found it was a first edition by using the ISBN in Google.
Terry Pratchett: Soul Music - SB in brand new condition. Same as most of the other Pratchett covers I have.
David and Leigh Eddings: The Redemption of Althalus - SB in brand new condition.
3 for £1 at a charity store. Absolute bargain!

Joe Halderman: Peace and War
Large SB which consists of all three of the Halderman War series: The Forever War, Forever Free and Forever Peace - been after this one for a while so was a great find.
£2.50 from the British Heart Foundation.

Very sad to find my usual market trader (the one who keeps his eye out for me) has closed for business as he is retiring. Guess I will have to just keep haunting the usual stores.

lol - calling me out like i would read your post....:P

There are a lot of different copies of all the dune books, and I don't know who the 'original' publisher was. Most of the books dont have number lines or easy identification, and there are tons of books club editions, revised editions, editions with extras from the author, etc. etc. Probably a thousand different 'first editions' out there from all kinds of publishers.

If I write it - he will come!

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/870317.God_Emperor_of_Dune

Above is the cover type - the ISBN number matches (does this differ between publications?) and it is labelled as Gollancz. I would just love to check if this was a first edition as it looks like it was published on the release date of the novel as well.

Thanks for your help Wilshire :)

according to:
http://www.nationallibrary.fi/publishers/isbn/newisbn.html

No new ISBN is needed for:
Changes in price
Change of printing year
Correction of misprints
New cover picture
Change of printer

So, if its not price clipped, and if it has the same cover/printer/printing-year its probably a first edition.

If there was any changes (other than printing errors)  or updates, or a new publisher, it would need a new ISBN.

Seems likely that you found a first edition.

I dont know of any way to track whether or not its a 1st printing without the number line. Probably you'd have to find a list (if one exists) of errors that may have existed in the first and/or early printings that were later corrected (errors that wouldn't require an ISBN change), then cross-reference that with your copy to see if you have a first/early print or a later one.

Welcome to the fold Wilshire. Hahaha I like to think this is my bad influence.

I really like the old short anthologies like Where do things go from here and Dangerous Visions and that sort of stuff. Really gets the brain firing.

Nice haul their Wilshire.

Apparent I have a ton of libraries/charities in my area that do sales like the three I went to this weekend. I have been meaning to do some hunting for several weeks now but have been too busy to go.

This is only partially your fault. You certainly made it apparent to me that there should be a cheaper way to get books, and so clued me in on a cheap way to fuel my addiction. Spending $11 on a handful of books that I've been meaning to add to my collection , that would have otherwise cost me 5x or more than what I paid, is a pretty great feeling.

Yeah there is definitely something to be said for finding things a lot cheaper than usual - nice to help the charities while at it.

Once your binding project is successful then prepare for some orders!

Should probably respond to it in my thread, but whatever.

I'm not 100% sure i can do a whole book on my own, but we'll see. Even if I can't do it all, I at least have the dies and could coordinate leather purchases. The total price should be less for additional copies, but im not sure by how much.

Would be fun to have some TSA peoples with various versions of hand bound TDTCB a la Wilshire. Better pick up a 1st/1st TDTCB before the internet runs out of them :P. Otherwise you'll be stuck with the inferior 2nd prints.

Well my wife had her wisdom tooth out yesterday so I've been off work on babysitting duty. Took the littlest one to a playgroup so decided to grab a few things whilst in town:

Joe Abercrombie: The First Law #3: Last Argument of Kings - SB with the gorgeous cover art. Whoever designed the FL universe covers really hit the nail on the head for me. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6237768-last-argument-of-kings
£9.99 from Waterstones. Been meaning to get this for a while. As a fan of Abercrombie I have decided to buy the complete matching cover set of all of the First Law stuff.

Anne McCaffrey: The Renegades of Pern - HB in good condition.
Robin Hobb: Soldiers Son Trilogy #2: Forest Mage - HB in good condition. 1st/2nd
David Zindell: A Requiem for Homo Sapiens #1: The Broken God - HB in good condition. Really interesting blurb.

Anyway I grabbed a few things in town recently:

Scott Lynch: Gentleman Bastards #1: The Lies of Locke Lamora - HB in decent condition, DJ has one small tear but other than that it's good.
Robert Jordan: The Wheel of Time #3: The Dragon Reborn - SB First Edition, nice coloured map in Card for the first two pages.
Lois McMaster Bujold: Barrayar - SB with minor wear.
Christopher Paolini: Brisingr - SB in great condition.
Wilbur Smith: Elephant Song - SB in good condition.
It was 3 for £1 at Debra charity store. So £2 for all.

Luke Scull: The Grim Company - SB new - one of the horrible generic looking fantasy cover types with just a big helmet...
£1.99 from The Works.

Michael Crichton: Congo - This book had an irate wife related "accident" and is now in the bin.
Michael Crichton: The Lost World - This book had an irate wife related "accident" and is now in the bin.
£1 each new from Asda.

I suspect all of the McCaffreys were donated by the same person. That completes Doona and The Talent series for me which is sweet. The Zahn comples Heir to the Empire series as well which is supposed to be amongst the best Star Wars EU, even if its now not canon. I have the Gemmell already no doubt but I like to buy Gemmell. Shift adds to Wool which I already own.

Not a bad days purchases as I haven't had a big buy for a while.

Here it is!  The long-predicted, now delivered Ganondorf bookhaul of 2014!!!

Pics on the way!

Legend has it that the Ganondorf Family Library was established in 2014 when the university where he and his wife worked foolishly decided to downsize their rare books collection to make room for computers.  Thousands of books dispersed into the university's community and this is what the Ganondorfs got:

AUTHOR:      Thomas Carlyle

TITLE:      Curious and Facetious Letters of Benjamin Franklin Hitherto Unpublished
AUTHOR:      Old Ben
PUBLICATION:   1898
NOTE:      This volume is "Printed for Privale Circulation; Two Hundred Copies in all, consecutively numbered: 10 on Vellum and 190 on Whatman Paper."  This one is marked "No. 74."  It has 5 letters, 3 in English and 2 in French.  Most of the letters 's' in the thing looks like an 'f.' So a sentence like this looks kind of strange to me "It is the moft natural flate of Man, and therefore the State in which you are moft likely to find folid Happinefs."

The first letter is "Advising a Young Man as to the Selection of a Mistress."  Memorable passages include "I repeat my former Advice, that in all your Amours you fhould prefer old Women to young ones" for reasons including "Becaufe there is no Hazard of Children, which irregularly produced may be attended with much Inconvenience" and "if the Affair fhould happen to be known, confiderate People might be rather inclined to excufe an old Woman, who would kindly take care of a young man, form his Manners by her good counfels, and prevent his ruining his Health and Fortune among mercenary Proftitutes" and "Becaufe the Sin is lefs…The debauching a Virgin may be her Ruin" and also "They are fo grateful!!"

Franlin also explains "Becaufe in every Animal that walks upright, the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Mufcles appears firft in the higheft Part.  The Face firft grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breaft and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the laft as plump as ever: fo the Girdle, it is impoffible of two Women to know an old one from a young one.  And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleafure of Corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at leaft equal, and frequently fuperior; every Knack being, by Practice, capable of Improvement."

In the letter, "To The Royal Academy of Brussels," Franklin writes about farting.  He urges the academy "To difcover fome Drug, wholefomeand not difagreeable, to be mixed with our common food, or fauces, that fhall render the natural difcharges of Wind from our Bodies not only inoffenfive, but agreeable as Perfumes."  Near the end, Franklin remarks "furely fuch a liberty of ex-preffing one's Scent-iments, and pleafing one another if of infinitely more importance to human happinefs than that liberty of the Prefs."

TITLE:      Dickens's Works (volumes 1-25)
AUTHOR:      Charles Dickens
PUBLICATION:   1865
NOTE:       This collection is incomplete because Dickens was alive and still writing when it came out.  Surprisingly, when we were examining these books at home, we found that the first volume included a newspaper cutout of Dickens's obituary.  These volumes are beautifully bound with a style that seems weirdly Jackson Pollock-like.

NOTE:      This is a publication featuring writers such as Oscar Wilde and Henry James.  A 'yellow book' was then known as a naughty thing, sometimes pornographic, so the name was chosen to give an 'edgy' connotation.  I think in Dorian Grey, Dorian's downfall is preceded by reading a yellow book.

OTHER STUFF (i'm not especially macabre, at least i don't think so, but some of the stuff below was just going to be thrown out and that didn't seem quite right)

⁃   Daus Neue Reich, numbers 16 and 18.  Newspaper periodicals from 1929.
⁃   A collection of hundreds of handmade glass slides that appear to date to the early to the early 20th.  These depict famous works of art from Europe.
⁃   A signed note from the Son of Sam
⁃   A signed note from Timothy Pickering, a general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War
⁃   A signed postcard from Hans Bar, Hitler's personal pilot
⁃   A signed letter from Dwight Eisenhower
⁃   A signed letter from Eleanor Roosevelt
⁃   A signed letter from Henry McClellan, confederate general
⁃   A signed photograph of Bishop Desmond Tutu
⁃   A photo of the Titanic signed by Marjorie N. Robb, a survivor
⁃   A photo of a B-29 bomber signed by 5 of the 12 crew members that bombed Hiroshima
⁃   A signed letter by John Tyler, lesser known US president
   ⁃   Fingerprints of Charles Manson

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE INFAMOUS BOOK OF ANECDOTE

THE ANECDOTE:    So there I was, going back to school to earn a nursing degree.  I am taking Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology I in the fall.  I am in the basement of the library rooting through the rare books.  My A&P prof is down there collecting science books.  I spot a book entitled "Flagellates."  These being the tiny one-celled critters with tails, I take the book off the shelf and hand it to my prof and say "Here, here's a book you would like."

He looks at it.  Looks at me.  He opens it, scans the contents.  Looks at me.  He looks back at the contents.  He puts it back on the shelf without a word and turns away.

I don't understand what's going on but later I realize that he is an A&P prof and that my Microbiology prof would be the person who would really enjoy an old book on flagella so I go back and nab it taking it home.

I have it on my coffee table, waiting until the next class when I can present it to her.  It is the weekend, I am drinking coffee with my legs up on the table.  My eyes wonder from my coffee cup, down my legs to the table and onto the book.  It does not say "Flagellates."  It says "Flagellation"

"Flagellation & the Flagellants"

As in whipping.

As in "Flagellation & the Flagellants. A History of the Rod in all Countries from the Earliest Period to the Present Time"

Oh God.  What have I done.

I scan the table of contents.

"Chapter 1: A Learned Controversy to Begin With"

"Chapter 2: A Brief Summary of Another Curious Controversy"

"Chapter 3: Flagellation Among the Jews"

I'm dead.  I'm going to be flunked.  Withdraw now.

The book meanders to what might be considered safer topics relative to the context

"Chapter 8: Flagellation Among the Franciscans and Similar Religious Orders" and "Chapter 16: Penal Flagellation" but then…

"The Flogging of Slaves"

"On the Whipping of Young Ladies"

"Birch in the Boudoir"

My anxiety is compounded since my prof is a gay man not entirely out of the closet in a conservative community.  What if he thinks I'm not only a pervert but also a homophobe.  Should I answer to "homophobic pervert" when he calls the role?

The next class arrives and I am too petrified to try to clear the air.  Mild awkwardness.  No explosions.  The next class: the same.  The semester progresses, the event is fading.  My grades are ok in the class.  Perhaps he though I was aiming for edgy humor?  The semester is over.  A- for the class, woohoo!

Spring semester, A&P 2.  One night I am drinking with him and others (I am also adjunct faculty and my wife is full time faculty at the school.  I am finally drunk enough and removed enough to retell the story.  Laughs all around.  He denies remembering the episode.  His eyes say the opposite.  B+ that semester.  Just glad I survived at all.

Some close encounters with death and humiliation make a person remember that you're only on this earth for so long and then you're gone.  With such little time, you have to be careful not to had your professor a book about archaic sadomasochism.  And if you do, and if you survive, toast your own health and count your blessings.

Well I have been promising to sort them for a while. So I sorted them over the weekend - it took me 5 hours.

Sorry for the awful picture quality, I used my wife's S4 mini and I think she must have the picture quality turned down to POTATO setting.

These are the shelves in my bedroom, the taller shelf (on the right hand side) is a duplicate of a shelf in my old bedroom at my mums house although I don't think it has as many stacked onto it.

PS: The copy of MR. Grey is NOT mine.

Yeah they are pretty well stacked, double stacked everywhere and triple stacked in a couple of places but that photo looks decelptive. I have a similar shelf at my mums but not as full and filled with older books from when I was a kid.

I shaved a lot of books from the collection before I took this photo (all my duplicates plus some David Eddings and other stuff I'm not likely to read.)

Anyway I promised to take some photos so I did. :)

A few years ago, when we decided to have our flat redecorated, we had to remove all books from three bookcases (which are so high that they are fastened by screws to the walls because otherwise they would be unstable) and all the others strewn around the place. As a result, we had 40 boxes and rubbish bags (the ones from strong plastic are very good) full of books and comics. That was the point when we bought an ebook reader - but we still buy comics and my husband buys or gets professional books that are not available as ebooks. As a result, we recently cleared up an upper shelf in the wardrobe - in-built and very deep (my wedding dress had to go somewhere else) to put some of the comics.
And these are just books that we wanted to keep, one with autographs or simply ones we like too much - every two or three years we look through our bookshelves and take everything that we do not want to keep to the local library.

I thought that your bookshelves were going to be made out of books, holding other books, set up on a floor comprised of books, fastened to a wall fashioned of books.

Well I got two books over the weekend:

George R. R. Martin: Game of Thrones #5: A Dance With Dragons Part 1: Dreams and Dust - Brand new looking Softback.
£2.00
Gary Gibson: Angel Stations - Brand new looking softback.
£2.00

The Martin completes my GoT collection (all the same cover set as well)

The Gibson is a start of a series and I have read and enjoyed Gibson before. I am a bit annoyed as there was also Final Days which is his 4th Shoal Sequence book and the only one I haven't read. My daughter needed the toilet so I had to rush out of the store and never had time to go back.

Damn toilet duties.

Messiah was really a great sequel iirc. Good luck.

I currently habe nearly all of my books on a single shelf. I should take a picture as well, I thought I had a lot of books and was fairly surprised to see them [mostly] all fit on the one shelf.

Title: Re: Book deals and purchases
Post by: Madness on December 30, 2015, 11:47:21 pm
Huzzah - I can finally participate in this thread as I've made my only real book purchases this year.

I wish I could post my library but I only have about 5% of the books I own at my sister's (though they are some of my favorites) while the rest languish, alone, at my friend's in Thunder Bay, half a province away.

But as this was the first Christmas with my full immediate family in ten years, I'm glad they all remembered that I love books and gave me giftcards with which to purchase them.

So... after a couple hours in Chapters:

The Complete Morgaine - C.J. Cherryh
- I haven't read much Cherryh in a number of years but The Faded Sun trilogy remains one of my favorites SF series ever and you can't beat four books in one volume for one volume's price.

Chronicles of The Black Company - Glen Cook
- Contains the first three Black Company novels. I generally dislike first person but I'm fairly convinced that this is the right time for me to try this series again. Obviously, a must-read for Bakker fans as beyond Tolkien and Herbert, this is another constantly cited inspiration.

The Dragon's Path - Daniel Abraham
- The Long Price Quartet is one of the most underrated Fantasy series out there, apparently, but I couldn't get A Shadow in Summer so I opted for The Dagger and the Coin series, instead. Obviously, I'm impressed by The Expanse (though, I didn't get Cibola Burn because I want to purchase it with the latest installment Nemesis Games) so I hope that impression of Abraham remains true of his previous works.

Prince of Fools - Mark Lawrence
- I've tried to read Prince of Thorns no less than four or five times now, even going so far as to plow through the first 20% at Camlost's when I was down there in October. He offered me the entire trilogy but something about Prince of Thorns (aside from the first-person) rubs me the wrong way. I've heard great things about the differences between Prince of Fools as compared to Prince of Thorns, if the latter turns you off Lawrence's writing, so I look forward to trying Fools.

Johannes Cabal: The Necromancer - Jonathan L. Howard
- The covers on these books draw me in again and again whenever I'm in a bookstore and I hadn't happened upon the first book until now.

Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy
- I've been hoping to happen across this book forever (I don't often order things online) and so it was great to find this one last copy in the store today. McCarthy is highly recommended by FB - whose opinion of all things narrative I much value - and Bakker used to teach Blood Meridian and it is constantly cited as the inspiration for the Scalpers, the Slog, the Captain, and Cleric in TJE and WLW.

All Hell Let Loose - Max Hastings
- Not generally a fan of political, war, real history books - whatever this is classified as; I generally prefer to study these things academically. The last one of its kin that I read was The Day the World Discovered the Sun by Mark Anderson, which was fantastic. I look forward to reading this rendition of WWII.

How We Learn - Benedict Carey
- Pop-science brain books are generally a good buy for my money, though depending on the author and their allegiances to certain theories, I sometimes end up putting these books down in disgust (the last of which was Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationships because of Sukel's glaring misrepresentation of some neurobiological concepts). We'll see if and when Carey falls.

Smarter: The New Science of Building Brain Power - Dan Hurley
- Same as above. It's a book I've looked at, picked up, scanned, and not bought a number of times before. Felt indulgent today, what with all my giftcards.

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience - Mihaly Csikszentimihalyi
- Same as above, though Csikszentimihalyi is the foremost "flow" researcher in the world. Always knew I would buy this book since I saw it in a used bookstore in 2011 but school has gotten in the way of this one.

Remapping Your Mind: The Neuroscience of Self-Transformation through Story - Lewis Mehl-Madrona & Barbara Mainguy
- Such Stuff as Dreams: The Psychology of Fiction - Keith Oatley is one of my favorite books ever since Bakker recommended it to me in '14. Oatley is the foremost cognitive scientist researching how fiction and brains interact so I'm curious as to how Mehl-Madrona and Mainguy's will stack against it. This one is guaranteed to be hit or miss: big potential for a B-rate academic-lite book here.

I also got Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for my nephew. Apparently, he's reading at an appropriate age for his cohort (he's 10 in Grade 5) but he's reading well below what I was at the same age and the academic "standard" today doesn't inspire me much.

Huzzah, new books :). Maybe I'll join in SR's reading pledge for 2016 - seeing as I've eternally disappointed him by not participating this year (and I didn't really want to report that I've only read everything in Bakker's catalogue (again) and a handful of textbooks in 2015, as it was one of my worst years for reading). I'm not in school until May or even September and it'll be the first new year that I haven't been reading academically in five years so a book a week might not be a bad pledge.

Cheers, thread.

Forgot that I made some impulse buys after certain unfortunate events back in November.

Illium (Dan Simmons) - HC, like new
Endymion (Dan Simmons) - HD, like new
Eragon (Christopher Paolini) - HC, like new, collectors edition (blue 'leather' with embossed gold dragon)
Fallen Dragon (Peter F. Hamilton)- HC, like new

Probably spent $20 on the Eragon, maybe $20 for the rest.

So I have slowed down my purchases considerably - mainly due to bookshelf space although I have just bought two new bookshelves (small ones) and I am in the process of moving my books to a new room in the house (converting a bedroom into a study).

February Purchases:

Andy Weir: The Martian - SB New. Recently watched and enjoyed the film, picked up the book and read the first few lines and thought I would give it a go.
£3 from The Works

Brian Staveley: The Emperors Blades - SB in good condition. Looked interesting and the first of a series.
£2.50 from British Heart Foundation

I need new copies of TJE and WLW. Cover ripped off of one of them, and the other is in sorry shape. I blame Overlooks' poor craftsmanship. Oh, can you check your TJE/WLW for me? Let me know if its still first edition and not price-clipped? (Aka, number line on copyright page goes 1 through 10 in some order, and price tag on dustjacket and/or barcode is listed as full price rather than having it marked through).

Hello All!

Well I have not been around for a while and will not be around until I have completed TUC.

It arrived at my local Waterstones (on order) yesterday and I will be collecting from store today, secluding myself away on pain of spoilers for now and then hopefully in the next week or so I will stop by in a more meaningful way. Super excited to be reading TUC!

Will post all of my other purchases and reads (not many) and update the year long curated read thread - although I am going to finish TUC before I set foot upon this Ground.

Hope to speak to you all soon! :) Definitely time for a Cast or at least a late night Skype chat!

Heh, Chris Evans: A Darkness Forges in Fire . Read this when it first came out. Thinking back, it was an interesting book with some unique ideas, though maybe not the most well written book. Never grabbed the sequel.
