Finished TUC today.

I will try to write down my thoughts later (and after browsing the TUC subforum, i see that i am at least not alone in being...underwhelmed) although i'm still not sure if i want to post it here. Not sure if a Bakker fan forum is the right place  ;)

Now, to the thread at hand. Right after reading the last sentence of the book my mind was instantly going "Ok...what now?!" . Will we see the third series? Or is this it for Earwa?
If we will see the series that shall not be named, what will it tell? Will it continue immediately after the end of TUC? Or will we get another years long jump into the future?

There surely are some stories to tell, obviously. I mean 2nd Apocalypse, yo! So i guess there is no shortage of stuff to write about.
I do wonder though...is it a good idea? I really think it is worth pondering if it isn't better to just....leave it there, so to speak.

Not much thought, i know. Just lots of (probably uninteresting) questions  ;D

Maybe i will come back later with more actual thought (and/or answers to my own questions).

But i had to get that out of my head...and where better to put it then here?!!

Oh and...bring the Quorum back, damn it!!!!  :P :P ;D ;)

Literature / Science Fiction - I need some recs
« on: February 21, 2015, 01:45:29 pm »
Hi everyone,

So, after a long period of "fantasy-only" reading, i decided it is time for some sci fi. To be totally honest, i tried to get into Sci Fi more than once but somehow it never clicked with me so far.

As a reader and big fan of epic multi-volumed fantasy series with deep worldbuilding and above average prose (i know, good prose is a very subjective matter, but just use your own "grading system", so to speak), i am wondering - is there something equivalent in Sci Fi? Epic proportions sci fi with deep worldbuilding and good prose? If so, please recommend it to me.

So far i have on the list:

Hamilton - Night's Dawn Trilogy
Reynolds - Revelation Space
Simmons - Hyperion cantos (tetralogy)
Herbert - Dune

There are a lot of different subgenres...i am not sure which one is "best" for me...if i had to guess, Space Opera (it seems the genre with the most multi-volume content ;D). But i don't know for sure.

Ok, enough rambling from me...let me see your suggestions and/or lists.

Addendum - I am no fan of first-person narratives, so please keep that in mind for your recommendations. Thanks :)

News/Announcements / Canadian publisher dumping TSA?
« on: October 10, 2014, 11:15:40 am »
So i heard on the internet, that Penguin will no longer publish Bakker?! They will sell Overlook Press books in canada for the upcoming TUC.

Wow?!

There's even some speculation going around, that Scott will most probably not write the third sequence at all.

Does anyone know more about that?

I really hope that at least the last part is bogus. But if the first part is true (about Penguin dumping Scott), that's also sad "news" (no idea if i am just "late to the party" or if that is still news).

I thought you guys might find this interesting (and aggravating).

RPG Discussion / [TSA P&P RPG] Setting/History collection Thread
« on: December 01, 2013, 11:44:59 pm »
In here i hope we can gather all the TSA Hivemind knows about the setting, cultures and history of Earwa.

And also discuss what periods are suitable for play etc.

As the title suggests, this will be a thread for discussing the rules for a TSA rpg. For now, this is a brainstorming thread. If we come to a decision or at least close to one, we can open up a construction thread.

I wanted to take this out of the general rpg roleplayers thread because it needs focus (no pun intended ;) ). And the other thread is supposed to be a thread for just babbling about p&p game in general.

So here it is.

As already mentioned, as of now, i think that Runequest 6 would be solid basis for a TSA rpg, if we want to go the route of "take an existing system and tweak it" (instead of developing a custom made rulesset on our own). It is a relatively oldschool rpg with new paint that has a very well rounded rules-frame, imo.
I could see a more storytelling oriented game-engine as well. So FATE or Cortex+ are contenders if others think they are better suited to "replicate" the story-structure of Scott's work.

I am always torn between a more crunchy system that can simulate the realities of a given world versus a system that better models the kind of stories that you see in said world *sigh* Oh well. Maybe you guys and gals have some opinions about that?

Let's hear them.

Literature / Mark T. Barnes - Echoes of Empire series
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:58:07 pm »
Hey fellow Bakker-Fans,

Here's a new voice in fantasy that i think could find some fans in these hallowed halls   ;D

His homepage can be found here : http://marktbarnes.com/

He writes fantasy that has a touch of technology in it in how he portrays magic and in that magic is used in the industry (for example skybarges that glide through the air with the help of magic-engines). So think more "Final Fantasy" instead of "medieval european fantasy". It's an intrigue based story but he also has old orders that pop up that have training in the mental arts etc. etc. . And his chapter openings contain also short excerpts from inworld books that have an almost bakker-like quality (as in philosophical "essays" and quotes etc. ). The cultures in this world are more asian- and arabic-inspired than the classical western-europe based fantasy-kingdoms of other books.
I really dig his first book, started the second one and i think he gets better. Don't get me wrong, he is not as complex and thought-provoking as Bakker, but i think it is still a very good debut.

Here's the cover of the first book and the book blurb:

Quote
An uneasy peace has existed since the fall of the Awakened Empire centuries ago. Now the hybrid Avān share the land with the people they once conquered: the star-born humans; the spectral, undead Nomads; and what remains of the Elemental Masters.

With the Empress-in-Shadows an estranged ghost, it is the ancient dynasties of the Great Houses and the Hundred Families that rule. But now civil war threatens to draw all of Shrīan into a vicious struggle sparked by one man’s lust for power, and his drive to cheat death.

Visions have foretold that Corajidin, dying ruler of House Erebus, will not only survive, but rise to rule his people. The wily nobleman seeks to make his destiny certain—by plundering the ruins of his civilization’s past for the arcane science needed to ensure his survival, and by mercilessly eliminating his rivals. But mercenary warrior-mage Indris, scion of the rival House Näsarat, stands most powerfully in the usurper’s bloody path. For it is Indris who reluctantly accepts the task of finding a missing man, the only one able to steer the teetering nation towards peace.

Literature / That author that Scott promoted...
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:25:59 pm »
Hey gals and guys,

I remembered today that Scott promoted an author he knew from his writer-workshop days on his blog but i totally forgot his name so searching the blog does not work. Do you know what i am talking about? If so, maybe you can link me to it? That'd be much appreciated :)

Thanks!

RPG Discussion / Any pen&paper roleplayers here?
« on: September 22, 2013, 03:46:46 pm »
Just curious.

As Scott himself is one and his Earwa was a Game-Setting before it ever became a setting for novels, i think we are right at home here  ;D

So yes, i am one. And i would kill for an official p&p RPG of Scott's world.

So how about you gals and guys? And if you are a p&p rpg player, tell us what kind of systems and worlds you like.

The Judging Eye / Reread - Questions and discussion
« on: August 13, 2013, 04:20:13 pm »
Hi everyone,

So after signing up here i had to urge to start rereading TJE....let us see how long i can keep it up (have a lot of enticing looking books on my "to read" pile  ;D ).

Here some first thoughts and questions - or to put it another way, let me know what you think about this stuff:

- Mimara's judging eye...first appearance when she looks at Akka during their first long talk at the fire before his tower. Now, i was wondering (and maybe there already is a thread somewhere where you discussed that indepth, but i didn't see a thread-title so here it is (again?) ) ... do you think this really is something we, as readers, have to take at face value? In other words : she really has a judging eye...so Akka is really damned etc etc . What else could it be? After her musings on how Akka and herself have suffered a lot in this life, and Akka more or less confessing that he is most probably mad...what if Mimara is just...well, mad? Maybe she hallucinates that stuff. Any theories and ideas on this? It just got me thinking...maybe i'm paranoid but i can't belief that it is what is says on the tin, so to speak  ;) Or is that precisely what Scott wants us to think and therefor this is exactly how it is... ?! Now you see where this is going right...you could start thinking in circles like that and do that ad infinitum and ad absurdum ... so, let me have it.

- This goes a bit in the same direction but i hope you keep reading  ;) The vision of Psatma Nannaferi at the beginning of the book...where she thinks the goddess herself visits her...do you guys think that this is for real? I mean are the gods in Scott's world real? If they are, do you think they interfere that directly? If not, what is happening here? Is the old priestess just nuts? Or are there darker schemes at work. I could totally see the consult behind this...trying everything to oppose Kellhus, even if they have to play a ruse like this instead of killing him directly.

These two scenes just made me very curious as to how much the reader can take at face value in this trilogy and how much it is the author trying to mislead us. On the one hand i find this very stimulating, on the other it can also be very frustrating  ;D My mind just does not stop thinking about the many possibilities that could be...i'm almost doing a thousandfold thought here  ;D

Anyway, i hope this gives us something to talk about. I'm kind of new here but i was a-little-bit-active on the old three seas forums a long time ago. I'm trying to get back in the saddle  ;)
Maybe this kicks off other discussions on the topic of Bakker's Earwa-work which i think are a bit slow atm.

Introduce Yourself / Hi everyone
« on: August 07, 2013, 12:10:51 pm »
I'm a long time fan of RSB (started to read TDTCB on the first day it was published  ;D ) , I joined the three seas forum when it first opened but didn't post that actively.
Scott's work is one of my favourite fantasy works. His world is so vibrant and has amazing depth and his writing is superb. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the AE series.

Other works that i enjoy as much as PoN and AE are: Steven Erikson's Malazan work and Michelle West's Sun Sword series. Another excellent Author is Guy Gavriel Kay.

I signed up here because i wanted to be able to post if necessary ;) Although i think i will be much more of a reader than a poster. Not that there is nothing to say about this series, au contraire, but my last reread was some time ago and i don't think i am fit enough to "spar" with you guys on an equal level  ;)

Anyway...glad to be here and looking forward to many interessting threads.
