Title: TSA related art and stuff. (III)
Post by: Somnambulist on December 30, 2013, 04:47:11 pm
Probably because they are works of art, fool.

Amazing. I feel like I'm most impressed with the light emanating from Achamian's eyes and mouth, despite the angle. What detail!

LOL.  I always feel like I should be faster, but I guess that's just my distorted sense of effort over time.  Cheers for the comments, Madness!

EDIT [Madness]: Changed thread title.

Man, these are really starting to take some time.  Thanks for the great feedback on these.

Akka v. Zioz from TTT.

I really like these. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it. Your stuff really captures the SA feel.

Of course. And so long as you are satisfied with the time spent, little else matters :).

Yeah, I'm caught on them too. Because of the mundanity of Akka and not showey that light is - thus making it more noticeable because it's discrete.

Another rendition of the Horns, with a little dramatis personae.

I wonder what the horns are? Or were they part of a hydrogen scoop type arangement?

edit: oh, is that the nail of heaven in the background?

Another rendition of the Horns, with a little dramatis personae.
Hmm. I've always seen the Horns as being recurved (S-shaped), like someone buried a gigantic lyre (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090713174548/desencyclopedie/images/3/3f/Lyre.png) in the ground. Or like the Shield of Sil (http://community.wizards.com/sites/mtgcommunity/files/pictures/66caf46e727fde4840154d7d14a843e3.jpg).
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Wilshire on January 03, 2014, 02:49:55 pm
Thats pretty awesome.

Dusk I never thought of it quite like that, though they would appear far more menacing if shaped that way. It would make some sense that the the Shield of Sil was modeled somewhat after the ship, or at least what remained of it.

Cheers for the comments, everyone.

Callan:  Yep, Nail of Heaven representin'

Duskweaver:  Yeah, I'd never thought of them like that...  That would be kinda badass, though.  Where did that rendition of the Shield come from?
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Wilshire on January 03, 2014, 06:10:03 pm
Hmm I looked for it but couldn't find it. There is a brief discussion about the shield in the TUC Chapter 1 excerpt near the beginning.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Madness on January 04, 2014, 12:50:05 pm
Inspired by the Dream in the TUC Ch. 1 Excerpt: (I think someone in the initial part of that thread... or maybe t-shirt ideas!! weirdly enough. I tried one and then someone did that one (maybe even Duskweaver. Or locke?)

Somnambulist, that latest Ark is awesome. But to weigh in on looks here, I actually figured that they were like thrusters or engines.

Lol... The Emperor and Luke both fall into abysmal chambers on the Death Star ;).

Duskweaver:  Yeah, I'd never thought of them like that...  That would be kinda badass, though.  Where did that rendition of the Shield come from?
It was my quick and dirty attempt to visualise the description in the tUC excerpt, as explained in this thread (http://second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=822), originally on the previous iteration of this forum.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Somnambulist on January 04, 2014, 04:08:43 pm
Madness:  yeah, I think they're engines, too, with some kind of emitters at the tips for propulsion, maybe gravity drives or anti-matter, but nothing so mundane as chemical rockets.

Duskweaver:  I like it
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Triskele on January 04, 2014, 08:01:14 pm
I guess I tend to think of the horns as big tail-wings of sorts trailing behind the rest of the vessel which is buried after the crash.

But that's not entirely consistent with the suggestion that there's an elevator going up them in the TUC exert unless they reworked it.

Then again, who is to say that they couldn't have had ways to travel through all parts of their ship.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Francis Buck on January 05, 2014, 01:44:01 am
I've heard different people mention at times that the Ark is actually bigger on the inside than the outside, but I've never seen any textual evidence for it. I know there's the line about the Ark being a "world unto itself", but to me that just implied it was really damn big. Anyone got some references for this?
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Wilshire on January 05, 2014, 04:11:58 am
I've never heard that. Could have been something Nau/Seswatha said, though I would think that was more like "wow there's a bunch of it buried, this place is so much bigger on the inside" kind of thing.

Curethan:  Thanks! Yeah, I considered doing that... then I didn't.  Probably should have.

Duskweaver:  I wish I could take credit for being that clever.  I tried a few arrangements before settling on that one.

Very interesting Somm. Not at all how I myself envisioned it, but still an excellent piece as always. I definitely dig the invocation of an almost Egyptian sarcophagus, intentional or not.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Somnambulist on January 08, 2014, 03:31:01 pm
FB:  Yes, an Egyptian sarcophagus was definitely the inspiration for the design.  Physical descriptions of the No-God are arguably the sparsest out of any 'thing' in the series, which is kinda cool.  Galaxies of room for interpretation, so I went for a fusion of the old (Egyptian style, face) with the futuristic (sleek, smooth, and made of nimil instead of iron).  I also wanted to try to explain, visually, how the Carapace would create and sustain a 'whirlwind.'  I imagine the entity encased within emanates a frigid cold, while the thrusters at the bottom create the intense heat, thus creating the convection currents necessary for the effect.  Probably weak reasoning, but that was the idea, anyway.

I'm sure someone could get something on the cover of that if we ever pull something like that together.

Though, I don't know if this is supported by the books, but I imagine the dragons as even bigger - their length as long as a small sky scraper. Truely massive bastards.

Regardless for some reason I want to see the next frame as the beam that hit its neck ends and flames and blood start gouting out from that point.

I think Wuttëat was described as being two elephants tall at the shoulder.  I assume that he would be the biggest of the lot considering he's the original, but I don't know if that's expressly stated.  So, I'm probably pushing it with the size of this one.  Anyway, it was a fun scene to work on.  Thanks for the feedback, Callan, Nskoghar and Madness!   :)

That was Ciogli 'The mountain', IIRC.

Non men keep growing - he used a cauldron for a helmet (as described in the false sun). He was probably taller than a house. In fact if the guy in the picture was Ciogli and dragons are as long as small sky scrapers are tall, it'd probably be to scale.

Also, congrats, that's the first one on DA that I've seen you get comments on.

I like this one a lot, especially the scale.

I think depiction of the major battles in WLW would all look great on a similarly zoomed out scale. its hard to imagine horizon to horizon sranc with a pocket of Men holding back the tides.

If you are taking requests, anything within one of the Mansions. Ideas: Cil'Aujas, any of its hall, or cavernous rooms, the skin eaters fleeing from the hordes of sranc, especially when they are descending down the clif/staircase and Cleric appears up top, the slave chamber/pits, the Medial Screw...
If you want something more intimate, any of the semi-duals we get. Miathanet/Inrilatas, Kellhus/Skin-Spy, Akka/Nil'Giccas, Akka/Mimara surround by sranc in their cringing behind wards, Kellhus/Horse-King just before he stabs him.

If you want more I got more :D

Thanks, Madness.  I had a few comments on some earlier pics, but nothing for a while.  It's a big community on there, and I wonder how people's stuff gets seen at all, tbh, unless it's specifically being sought out, or pimped out aggressively.  Been meaning to look into it, but haven't yet.

I guess it just depends on how well I can visualize the scene in question.  If I can think of a cool perspective or composition, and it's within my ability, I might try some sketches to see if I've got the 'feel' for it or not.  I have half a dozen or so scenes partially started but have abandoned them for one reason or another.  Either they've outrun my skill or my interest, or both.  I have so little relative time to devote to these that I really have to be excited about it to take a scene to completion (or at least a satisfactory result for me).

Somna, I love the medium you are using, and another great post. Love the dragon in the background spewing fire :). I thought either Seswatha or Anaxphoros was on a Chariot... maybe I made that up though.

I often wondered about the particulars of the Heron Spear's shape. Why Heron, why spear? I decided on a gun-like device, but your deception of a staff is great.

Damn, that it what I would call aesthetically pleasing. :)  A query for you Som, Is your copper tree of Siol interpretation a deliberate homage to the design of Nimloth the Fair of Tolkien fame?

I may be alone in this, but I was never one to take the description of "corpse armor" to be so bluntly literal.  In my soul's eye, I just imagined some really gothic and nasty looking tekne power armor.  I know its a much more low-brow franchise, but I see something  that wouldn't look out of place with the Chaos Space Marines from Warhammer 40K.  Speaking of which, I think the entities of the Warp would get along just fine with the Inchies and the rest of their ilk.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Somnambulist on May 10, 2014, 01:50:02 pm
The Copper Tree imagery definitely evokes similarities with Tolkien's elves, and I was aware of it, but did not deliberately attempt to draw an analogy between the two.  As for the bodies, I think Bakker is nothing if not literal.  The description from the TTT glossary is '...wore fierce and festering bodies as garments of war.'  Now while I admit to some license here, I think the essence is true to his meaning.  I drew humanoid body parts as opposed to fierce bodies (whatever fierce might imply).  It could be alien animals, it could be saber-toothed tigers, I don't know.  TBH, I had a hard enough time trying to imagine Sil himself without deciphering 'fierce' bodies.    :-\

Anyway, much like all the nerdanels flying around about story, motivation, etc., these are merely my visual nerdanels, if you will.  Some may have some visual truth, but most will probably be proven to be dross in time.

Thanks for the comments, guys.  Much appreciated!
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Hirtius/Pansa on May 10, 2014, 05:11:30 pm
To be honest this is one of the more interesting things that I've observed from Bakker's prose in regards to anything involving the Inchies.  Basically he has to articulate standard sci-fi tropes, but in the patois of these fantasy cultures and characters who wouldn't know a microwave from a hyperspace drive.  The Heron Spear is what it is called by the Three Seas due to its physical traits, but the phrase "laser beam rifle" would never appear in text, and rightfully so as it would seem super out of place.  The Incu-Holoinas is never described as a "spaceship", although we know it is one.  Constantly, metal and iron are used to described the Wracu, and many on these boards have come to the conclusion that they are somewhat cybernetically enhanced by the tekne.  But the phrase "cybernetic bio-engineered war-beast" is never used in text.  So I think it comes with the territory with the Inchoroi, that the language used isn't necessarily truly indicative of what we are observing, buy merely though the lens of these Earwans peoples.  So when I hear "festering corpse armor" my mind conjures something much more science fiction in function.  But of course the Inchies may adorn themselves with literal corpses for battle as rite or some kind of tradition, I don't know.  Does this block of text make sense?
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Somnambulist on May 10, 2014, 06:15:23 pm
Absolutely makes sense, and I see your point.  I hadn't considered that angle and you very well could be correct.  Maybe some sort of bio-armor that was going 'bad' for lack of knowledge or inability to maintain it.  Which pisses me off, cuz I didn't think of it before.  See?  Dross.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. III
Post by: Hirtius/Pansa on May 10, 2014, 06:54:28 pm
Yes!  As if the loss of the Incu-Holoinas as a sustainable power source or some such led to a decay or degeneration of the Incies bio-armor or other armaments.  The TTT appendix says something to the extent that the Inchies began to exhaust their technological weapons as the war with the Cunoroi continued.  So they clearly had no way to replace their arms or armor.  But it's all conjecture, because all we have is the subjective description from the TTT appendix, which is based on the subjective accounts of the Isuphriyas, based the subjective perspectives of the Quya who survived the war... Bakker man,  he's just screwing with our heads.

Well it looks great. Gives it a kind of new-age comic book feel.

I find it really amusing... like someone from 2014 went back and photographed the middle-ages... Or like there is an Inchoroi we don't know about hanging out using advanced tech to document Earwa's history.

Concept of a Ciphrang-style Yatwer.

Great way to portray her character--both an opening and a spear!

Is she really the oldest and most powerful of the Hundred? Where did that come from?

I'm pretty sure it was stated in the books.  I'll look for a reference.

Edit:  in WLW, when psatma is arguing with Meppa after the fall of Iothia, she States that Yatwer is the most powerful of all the Hundred.  Later, before Esmi confronts Maitha just before he bites it, Esmi is looking at a bunch of idols of the gods, Yatwer among them, and ruminates they are the oldest of the gods.  I think there's another reference stating she's the oldest.  There was another bit where it was said that even her brother Gilgaol feared her.

All true things. I don't know if she is listed in the appendix as such, but there are at least a couple  in-text referances of her being one of the first, if not the first, and certainly one of the most powerful (because she is the god of the lower castes, and there are a ton of disenfranchised peoples in Earwa).

Ajokli

Ohhh yes I like this (and the one of Yatwer). The style is awesome. Do more! How about Gilgaol, or the one that Inrau prays too before be dies (the stick/tree lady).

I forget who Onkis was, but that drawing just looks great. Gilgaol and Ajoki are also very nice.

I cannot see "Kings" for some reason, it says there's a filter on it and not on the others.

Also like this one:

Your depiction of the Tusk and the Heron Spear also works for me.

Mog is splendid. The Synthese is close but a bit too much in the face IMO, face should be smaller.

This Inchoroi depiction ranks among your best though:

Som I think my favourite drawing of yours is the Inchoroi front and side view along with Gilgaol.

I am working on a drawing based from your Inchoroi (hope you dont mind) but making it a bit more how I imagined the Inchoroi. Funny how your first visual interpretation tends to stay in the mind and only change slowly over time.

I definetely think they look better with their names and aspects on. :)

Design-wise I love Bukris and Anagke, but they seem a little more...I don't know the word, "physical" perhaps (particularly the former)? Whereas the others had a more "primordial cosmic being" feel to them.  Still amazing design work though man, I really dig it.

I'd love to see a depiction of Titirga and Shaeonanra circa TFS...;)

I finally figured out that the descriptions and depictions here of the Inchoroi remind me of ancient Egyptian head ornamentation, including the Atef, Deshret, Hedjet, and Pschent. Examples:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Egypte_louvre_116_stele.jpg

They were worn to identify with various gods. I don't recall any groups or individuals in TSA that wear anything like that which might identify a past or present association with the Inchoroi, but keep an eye out!

Thanks, guys.  FB, yeah, I can see that.  Didn't realize I was moving in that direction til you pointed it out.  Hm.  In retrospect, I think I wanted them all to be more like Yatwer (very cosmic with only a hint of anthropomorphism), but that obviously didn't last long.  Now, it's like a creature feature.  lol

Meyna:  I agree totally.  I always thought the Inchoroi were based on the Egyptian god Sobek  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek), what with their 'crocodilian jaws' and association with fertility/sex:

Quote
"Unis is Sobek, green of plumage, with alert face and raised fore, the splashing one who came from the thigh and tail of the great goddess in the sunlight…Unis has appeared as Sobek, Neith’s son. Unis will eat with his mouth, Unis will urinate and Unis will copulate with his penis. Unis is lord of semen, who takes women from their husbands to the place Unis likes according to his heart’s fancy. "

Wow--Meyna and Somnambulist, that's awesome.  I never thought about the Inchoroi having any analogues in our world, but it seems obvious now.

On a related point, i'm a little confused about the clam/skull.  Does it point in the nose direction like a shark's fin or is it perpendicular to the nose like a fan or crown...or does Bakker leave it up to us?

This is the best description of the Inchies, from The False Sun.

Quote
The creature stood naked, as was his want, his wings folded into wicked hooks about either side of his great skull, which would have been cumbersome, had it not curved into a crest, narrow and deep, like an oyster set on end. A proportionate face hung from the fore, loutish with the absence of expression, nostrils drawn into shining gashes, sockets plugged with lobes of bare white meat. A second face filled the mouth, sheathing a second skull fused within the crocodilian jaws of the greater. Second eyes regarded the Hero-Mage with leering expectation. Second lips grinned about teeth like nails...

My bold.  I read that as being 'inline' like pointing to the front.

I imagined the Inchies a bit like Sobek, with the front of the head being crocodilian still but a bit shorter to allow the back of the head to elongate into a crest. To paraphrase the head is described as "a crest so large as to be cumbersome except for its thinning at the tip". I imagine the crocodilian jaws to be shorter to allow for the human head to fit more comfortably in its gape.

I would like to see Kelmomas and the beetle crouching before the statue of Ajokli, or Esmenet just before she hears the Fanim war drums, her chains and dead Maithanet at her feet, WLW at her back and courtiers kneeling before her.

Both powerful scenes - I suspect there would be too much background work involved in the second - but if they strike your fancy, would love to see them.

For some reason though, no matter how hard I try, I always think of them as black in my head like reading. I think it comes from the H.R. Giger imagery and the association with Alien.

+1 8). It'll happen, Som. I'll do what I can to nudge it so.

Madness, this makes me happy and nauseous all at one.  Thank you!  (I think...)  :)

I guess I was thinking pre with the crazy eyes, but either would be cool.

There's some newish art on PoN wiki that is worth checking out, including some of from Quinthane and others I hadn't seen before.

Yeah, those last three are mine lol. Figured I'd throw in some art for the characters that didn't have any (well, the Skin Eater isn't so much a character as a generalized interpretation, but yeah).

Just throwing ideas out. Would be cool to see Kellhus brandishing Serwe's burning heart. Or Mimara exorcizing the Wight with the Chorae.

Hmm wonder how bad Somna's artwork will look if I blow it up to be the size of two monitors. I'll probably have to stitch a couple together to make it tolerable.

Also, thinking about attempting to make a Chrome theme based on one/some of these drawings.

The ones by countconkula might have already been posted, but I don't recall seeing any of the others.
The first one looks like one of Somna's

The top two I hadn't seen yet.  Pretty cool.  Hope they keep posting Bakker art...

Wilshire, I can get you larger/higher res stuff if you want.  I only post screen res stuff to keep the sizes down.  Let me know.

Well most of those were posted many years ago it seems, so unlikely they keep making things.

As for different resolutions, I wouldn't want to be a burden. I'm dual screening monitors that are about 21 inches, and the combined resolution is 3840x1080 (Width x Height), which is just absurd. Yesterday I spent a long time splicing together all your current Gods into a single wallpaper, which turned out pretty decent (so glad they are on a pure black background). With the 7 you have done, I put 4 on one screen and 3 on the other (made them 540x540 squares so that they where exactlly the height of the monitors, and the rest I just filled in with black). Not sure what I'm going to do when you're done with all of them, but I'll figure out how to spread them out more or less evenly.
My other idea is to put sid-by-side the Zioz fight and the Wracu fight, one fight on each screen. I think those are individually big enough to cover most of the space.

Other than that, I have thoughts to make my own TSA theme for google chrome, which is pretty easy. Haven't decided what picture to use with it though. If I ever decide on anything I'll let you know if need a higher res file. Thanks!
