I think it's done on purpose because Malazan is ultimately about the world itself and the ideas/history within it. However, this means that most characters are going to just be there and quite a few are rather boring tbh.

But, I'm glad I got into it. I would have never met my cinnamon roll, Itkovian, if I haven't.

Oh, I did. And yea, he's obviously critical of capitalism, which is perfect for me, but he could have stated it in fewer words.

Here's my "review" of House of Chains. Watch out for spoilers! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2508371352

Now on to Midnight Tides.

52% complete. House of Chains is a quicker read, but I don't think it has the same emotional impact MOI did. Like, I don't care as much.

Tavore makes me smile though. She is impressive. However, she is a little too remote which would explain why people have doubts, but it's clear to me that she has to have a "queenly mask" and she does show her humanity in private.

I actually like Karsa. He's a "problmatic fave" sure, but I can't help but find him interesting. He's weird, but when it's fun when he interacts with others. And boy, can he dance. I don't think he'll ever be a cinnamon roll though. As of now, Itkovian is the only one.

I like Torvald Nom too.

What happened with Itkovian reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxvPjuREDpE

I don't know if the song fits, but the ending scene sure does. It's like The Rose meetings the ending of Conan the Barbarian, only they're giving gifts and not putting out candles.

87% Complete. TBH, it did feel slow at times after Capustan, but it's all roller coaster like. I remember being told that about ALL of Malazan, but it's certainly true here. Only this time, there are multiple highs. Loved what happened to those necromancers. BAAAAHA! "More wine?"

Itkovian is letting down his hair a bit with Stonny and Gruntle. So precious. <3 I wish someone would succeed in talking sense to him, but he's STUBBORN. Caladan Brood couldn't even get to him. Well, he wasn't Shield Anvil for nothing.

Ganeos needs to be told that he is in a WAR. I don't know what the hell he's expecting. Does he think the Pannion Domin feel bad about their actions? There's no Geneva Convention on the Malazan War. I don't think there are rules of engagement on that world.

Kallor, can you be any more obvious? Please? And quite frankly, now that I know about the three Elder Gods, Draconis and Nightchill didn't sound much better than him anyway. Some "liberation". K'rul is the only one who sounded decent.

Despite being so close, I suspect that there are like 200 pages left. Things are picking up for sure.

I LOVE Kruppe! Kruppe is my man! He's a delight to me! Itkovian is also someone I adore. I'm 65% complete. One of the most powerful scenes in series so far involved Itkovian.

Yup. In my case Team Consult really started to be a thing in the Aspect Emperor.
