General Earwa / The discourse of the soul
« on: December 22, 2017, 06:04:47 pm »
Currently re-reading Neuropath ... Came across this gem:

Quote
The ancient Greek roots of "psychology" are psuke and logos, literally "the discourse of the soul".

So many Easter eggs in this book for his TSA readers :)

News/Announcements / How grimdark is TDTCB?
« on: August 24, 2017, 07:08:16 pm »
Mark Lawrence is running a poll on his blog to try and rate different novels according to how grimdark they are (and therefore get a feel for what the genre actually defines).

Anyway, TDTCB is there, but it can't be added to the list until it gets 100 votes. If you haven't already, consider going along and voting (and also on the others in the low vote list).

The Unholy Consult / Why would the Inchoroi fear damnation?
« on: August 06, 2017, 07:13:16 pm »
We learn through the series that particular nasty individuals, those with the strongest wild, who have the most vile ill - intent, tend to become Ciphrang.

But not the Inchoroi? I don't buy it. By all the reasoning given, Aurang for sure, and probably *all* of the Inchoroi, fall into this category.

The Unholy Consult / [TUC spoilers] The visions - Not Ajokli?
« on: August 06, 2017, 04:03:08 pm »
Guys, first up, I'm on holiday and on my phone so it's difficult to read the TWO PAGES of new content  :P So, if this is being discussed already then please somebody link me to it!

OK, from my read of the AMA, there were two direct questions regarding whether Ajokli was sending the visions. The first asked if it was Ajokli, and Bakker replied with "that would certainly seem to be a safe supposition". The second time asked if Ajokli had been talking to Kellhus since the Circumfix and the reply was "that which comes after determines that which comes before". Paraphrasing both times, sorry.

I note he does not say "yes" in either case.

I don't believe it's Ajokli at all. I'm not letting go of the Outside Kellhus theory unless it's prized from my child dead hands. Thoughts?

The Unholy Consult / [TUC Spoilers] CRACKPOT Is Kellhus the God?
« on: July 25, 2017, 06:36:52 pm »
Mods - feel free to move this to somewhere else.

Right, I don't actually believe the Baby Kellhus Theory, because it would be a terrible idea, but... let's say for a minute that it's true.

Part 1: As far as I'm aware, there are only 3/4 individuals who are definitely saved/blessed. 1: Mimara. 2: Esmenet. 3(or 4): Mimara's child (maybe includes the still born one, hence the 3 or 4). Even Psatma, who claims to be saved and a bestie of Yatwer... well, we don't know in that case, and Yatwer definitely kept info from Psatma (if we believe Kellhus when he made her splat). So maybe she wasn't saved at all.

Notice anything? All the saved people are in the same family tree.

In fact, when Mimara looked to her belly, she was blinded. I take this as meaning the child within was so fucking blessed that he shone like a beacon.

So, is the child the most blessed individual?

Part 2: The figure that Kellhus sees in his visions is not Ajokli, imo (Ajokli does not strike me as the kind of individual to take a human form with Kellhus' own face and be all calm and reasonable). I believe it is Outside-Kellhus, interfering retro-actively. He has decided to conquer the God ("I war against the God"), and to all intents and purposes, he succeeds at some point.

He needs to re-incarnate, and uses the baby to do this. The baby is therefore incredibly blessed, as is Mimara (because she is the mother and she needs to be blessed to have the Eye for some reason), and so is Esmenent (partly because of the family tree, but also because Kellhus genuinely loves her, as per Kellhus' POV in TGO).

Basically, Kellhus-the-God decides who is damned and who is saved. Everyone else is damned, because that gives him power, but these few individuals are saved.

The Unholy Consult / [TUC Spoilers] (or maybe not) - The Daimos
« on: July 07, 2017, 11:17:44 am »
Ok, what do we know about the Daimos? It's not really been described in any detail, from what I can tell. We see a few things it gets used for throughout the 7 books, but I have no real feel for how it works. You could say the same about the Aporos (apart from that it's about contradictions), but I don't see that as playing a big role in the series.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I guess if people want to refer to...

...they should probably use spoiler tags.

The Great Ordeal / Proyas and the No-God
« on: September 18, 2016, 05:35:36 pm »
Just started a re-read of TGO and trying to fathom Kellhus' motives with his re-working of Proyas throughout the book (the head on a pole still makes no more sense to me than before).

Kellhus needs to retrain Proyas' faith in order for him to do something that he would otherwise never do. First, he de-humanises the God (It rather than He) and then "villainises" the God (our damnation is the God's harvest). He also completely breaks Proyas down by admitting that he (Kellhus) is a fraud and everything Akka said he was.

Why? Why does he do this?

He does not need to re-program Proyas if his only goal is the destruction of Golgotterath and the Consult. Proyas would already be more than happy to do this. What does he need from  him that a) Proyas would otherwise never have done, and b) serves Kellhus' ultimate aim (whatever that is), perhaps in his absence?

So, I think Proyas will be the one to "release" or at least allow the release of the NG. What else could it be?

Kellhus needs the NG to close off the outside (I also believe either he or Kayutas, probably the latter due to the symmetries with Nau-Cayuti, will become the NG). Proyas will act to bring it about. I can't think of any other task that would be so anathema to Proyas and require him to be broken down so severely.

General Earwa / Traitor of men
« on: September 10, 2016, 12:31:12 pm »
Ok, hoepfully someone can clear this up for me.

Why is Cet'ingira / Mekeritrig known as... well, Mekeritrig (traitor of men / man-traitor)?

I thought it was because of his role in the Consult and FA... however, I'm currently re-reading The False Sun and I note that even here, Cet'ingira is reviled by Titirga and the Umeri. Something like 3/4 of the way through, we have this passage:

Quote
Six days Cet'ingira, the most-famed of the Siqu, the Most-feared-and-hated, stands upon the High Threshold, the arcane bass of his voice climbing from the pores of all that could be seen, his arms outstretched, a myriad of Mathesis Pins drawn into a circle of etc.

And it is also stated that even when Nogaral was first built, some 200 years before TFS takes place, the Sohonc hated it because they could see Cet'ingira's hand in its design.

So why was he so hated prior to the Consult even being a thing? Was it well known that he wanted to enter the Ark and awaken (or whatever) A&A? I honestly don't know / can't remember.

Author Q&A / Akka's dreams
« on: August 31, 2016, 06:03:59 pm »
I guess this will be answered in the books, or not at all. But... How significant is Kellhus' hypnotism of Akka in TTT regarding the subsequent deviations in the dreams? And all dreams in The Aspect Emperor generally? What happened when he spoke to Seswatha?
