General Misc. / Epitaphs, for fun and profit.....

I came up with the following epitaph for myself while composing a response on another thread. Perhaps others would like to join in? What do you want to have written on your tombstone?

Sixty years not less a day
Walked he on this garden green.

General Misc. / BFK's Music Corner
« on: January 27, 2018, 04:32:42 pm »
I am starting this thread for anyone who wants to delve a little deeper into the aesthetics and/or the "Tekne" of the music in which he/she is interested. "Tekne" talk could range from the tech of musical instruments (love the Moog synthesizer!) to virtuosity to music theory.

I'm a very inactive amateur pianist these days, but I still have some  vestigial chops. I think my ear is improving, simply due to the fact that I listen to so much music. Right now, I'm listening to a compilation of Mozart piano concertos pretty steadily and I'm gaining an appreciation for the brilliance of the classical formal structure. Three movements; fast-slow-fast; each movement states a theme, develops it, then returns to it. That's a wild oversimplification, of course, and there are other formal structures (suite based on dance forms, e.g.). But one always knows where one is and where one is going. Timeless music.

Hey, here's the thread for next season's competition. We probably won't pick against the spread. Please post any suggestions. I'll update this post as required.

See y'all in September!

Literature / Stephen R. Donaldson
« on: January 04, 2018, 04:09:27 pm »
Thing Called Sarcellus showed interest in SRD's latest, The Seventh Decimate, so I thought I'd start a thread for all things Donaldson.

I enjoyed Seventh Decimate for its simpler structure. A single POV from the protagonist, a prince fighting for his kingdom's survival. Donaldson is very good at constructing characters with conflicting motivations and at describing the mental conflict and how it resolves into action.

NB: No spoilers for Seventh Decimate for awhile (till 2/1?)

Writing / The Lost Zorro Transcriptions
« on: December 04, 2017, 08:05:56 pm »
What follows is the first of a collection of fragments that are apparently a transcription of a performance by legendary comic Zôreius Öenghûs. It is believed that the  transcriber was none other than Drusas Achamian and that the performance occurred during the Holy War's march to Shimeh.

.....and Holy Hades, you should have seen the look on Proyas's face! Priceless!

Anyway, where was I? Right, right, the Vulgar Holy War. Almighty God, what a bunch of stupid fuck-ups! "Yeah, we bad! Fanim's gonna be skeered of us! Yeah, boy!!" Fucking whacked by the Fanim. Literally whacked, right? Chop, chop, chop...."Hey, who needs a head? Coming up!" You gotta love their style, too. Sending the heads of the Three Stooges back to the Emperor. "Hey, boss, here are yo boys...."

So, those Forum denizens hip to the Quorum have suffered my innumerable references to the Paper Plane cocktail. Time for a thread devoted to all things alcoholic!

The Paper Plane

3/4 oz bourbon
3/4 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz Aperol
3/4 oz Amaro Nonino

Blend ingredients in shaker with ice. Strain and serve!

This is an excellent summer cocktail. It could, in time, join such venerable drinks as the whisky sour, the Tom Collins, and the margarita.

Please drink responsibly. Remember, don't drink and post!

General Earwa / Nonmen Jokes
« on: May 04, 2017, 04:53:29 pm »
How do you defeat a Nonman in a swordfight? Before it begins, you ask him, "Hey, that looks like an excellent sword. Who made it for you?". Then run him through as he pauses in confusion.

General Earwa / "Name That Comic!" ..... The CONTEST!!
« on: April 28, 2017, 03:19:23 pm »
Hey, Redeagl (and any other interested Forum members), I need a good name for the comedian delivering this classic routine. As originally written, I used my own moniker, but the talented, albeit quite profane, performer deserves an Eärwan name.
