The Unholy Consult / Re: The Unholy Consult Giveaway

Akka kneels over Kellhus' dying body, triggering Seswatha to completely take over, ingests all the ash of Nil'giccas, and kills the last two inchoroi.

Author Q&A / Whence the Inchoroi?
« on: July 18, 2016, 05:15:37 pm »
"Why are they on Earwa?" I suspect is a question that will be answered in TUC. But what kind of world did they come from? No sorcery, yet they apparently had some kind of understanding of the Outside and Damnation. Is that a 'science gone too far' kind of thing?

Now that you mentioned the Wracu, I realize I would love to see a conversation between Wutteat and one of the Inchoroi.

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO SPOILERS] Great Quotes from TGO!
« on: July 18, 2016, 04:53:52 pm »
It's maybe not 'epic' or anything, but I actually flinched a little when I read:
Quote
"Cling to me," the Survivor commanded the child. "Simulate love and terror."
Before that, I was still uncertain on the child and how Dunyain it was. This moment made me frightened for Akka and Mimara. The moment where I thought "Oh god, it's happening again."

I had assumed she was lying to appease his ego.

I always take the dusk jacket off hardcover books. Just don't like the feel of them on my hands.
Same here. And now I like the look of the HC spine and want matching ones for the other five. :/

TGO ARC Discussion / Re: The Gods
« on: July 12, 2016, 01:27:13 am »
Oh man, I love the idea of Ajokli being not quite one of the gods. I believe RSB mentioned in one of his answers on here that ciphrang are the ascension of the more remarkable souls.  Stands to reason that at least one or two men/nonmen may have achieved something greater.

I was wondering recently if anyone - inchoroi in particular - benefit from having the god shattered into a million warring splinters, and how that lines up with their arrival in Earwa. Maintaining that schism leaves the god in a weakened, inattentive state, and might be of interest to those who war with the connection to the Outside.

Maybe Ajokli has something similar in mind.

TGO ARC Discussion / Re: Kellhus
« on: July 08, 2016, 02:09:15 am »
Just thinking on this right now. Kellhus asks Proyas if he's comfortable knowing Serwe burns in hell. I wonder if this is true? With the comments by Bakker saying that in a way, Serwe is the most important character of the series, has me seriously doubting that she is. Even Mimara remarks upon Serwe when she sees the Skin-Spy change to her. I'd love to go back and read that, but Serwe is like the Virgin Mary of the New Empire. I just wonder if Kelllhus is missing something.
It makes sense if she is the goad to Kellhus' ultimate plans. If he broke on the Circumfix witnessing her death and damnation, and found it so utterly unacceptable that he decided at that moment that he would rewrite the very rules of salvation...

Author Q&A / Mimara and false prophecies
« on: July 05, 2016, 09:01:07 am »
Near as I can recall, the only prophecy we know of (outside of, arguably, the WLW's path, though I wouldn't call that a prophecy), is the return of an Anasurimbor.

1. How could one distinguish between false and true prophecies? I mean, yanno...before they actually happen.

2. Have we yet come across anything in the texts that would indicate what a prophecy regarding Mimara and the Judging Eye entails?

I've flip-flopped on the mundane/sorcerous singing. I don't believe the metagnosis can, by it's very nature, escape whatever trigger the agonic collar has, since to my understanding it's simply the addition of a second inutteral.

Only thing I can think is that Kellhus designed a spell specifically to break a collar, and taught it to Serwa as a contingency. An inutteral that masks the others maybe.

Literature / Re: Steven Erikson (The 3.5 million word journey?)
« on: June 29, 2016, 07:49:00 am »
He isn't as good as Erikson. That being said, I still enjoy his writing. Dancer's Lament is by far his best work yet. And if your a fan of Malazan, you have to read this book and the future installments of this series. Absolutely freakin' awesome!
I agree. I love the full richness of the Malaz universe, but barely cared about anything happening in his first two books. I read Dancer's Lament just out of desperate desire to read that backstory, and was rewarded by excellent dialogue and pacing. And humor, come to think of it.  I enjoyed it at least as much as Forge of Darkness, and I look forward to it's future installments more than Erikson's.

General Misc. / HTDA - The Space In Between (Nonman song)
« on: June 28, 2016, 11:04:55 pm »
Seeing a new member's name (The Spaces Between) triggered memory of this song by Trent Reznor and his wife's band How To Destroy Angels (already, what a TSA kind of name).  I'm sure it's coincidence, but also wouldn't surprise me if one of them was a fan. Some of these lines are just perfect from a Nonman perspective:

Quote
All our blood lying on the floor
Sense the crowd expecting something more.
   Opened up, proudly on display,
What we try so hard to hide away

   Blinding light illuminates the scene
Try to fill the spaces in between

Arms entwined in our final pose
   Narrative drawing to a close
Still remain the things we couldn't kill
In your eyes I can see it still

How we choose the framing of the scene
Hate begins to spill across the screen

   Blinding light illuminates the scene
Try to fill the spaces in between
And the song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-zFAio2nMA

(Ch. 12, page 267, Overlook):
Quote
The young Prince-Imperial leapt over the balustrade.
The sorcerous Wards he need not worry about. He could see them easily enough.
I believe you two are talking about the same scene.

A school of illusionists. How terrifying.
In a world where belief makes real? Hell yeah it is.

Holy shit, locke.

ETA: Ok, so we have Serwe, who believes, even when it's a skinspy, and Malowebi, who (we assume) does not believe.

(also, does anyone know when Sorweel first sees them?  Because the halos aren't described the first time he encounters Kell.)

Taking in what locke said, what triggered this belief from the Outside? Serwe's pure innocence?
