Literature / Re: Yearly Targets 2018
« on: January 10, 2018, 11:43:20 pm »
I'm in. I'll set a target of 25 new books. Here's 10 that I hope to include:

Fiction/Literature:

1. "Notes From Underground" - Roger Scruton

2. "The Brothers Karamazov" - F. Dostoyevsky

3. "Gardens Of The Moon" - Steven Erikson

4. anything new from Christopher Buehlman (good fantasy)

4a. The first book of the Traitor Son cycle (h/t to MSJ)

5. "Senlis Ascends" by Josiah Bancroft

6. "The Worm Ouroboros" by E. R. Eddison

Non-fiction:

7. "How To Be A Stoic" - Massimo Pigliucci

8. "Breaking The Spell" - Daniel Dennett

9. "Darwinian Fairytales" - David Stove

10. "Art And Imagination" - Roger Scruton

I've never played FFL. But I'm game. I imagine we can set that up at Yahoo Sports as well, yes?

I'll look into that, MSJ, thanks!
ETA: Oh, yeah, that'll work great.

So I'll just use the thread to announce the league (sometime during preseason, I imagine). Y'all can PM me with your emails then.

Of course, the thread will also post weekly results, along with bragging, gloating and trash talk. Sounds like fun to me!

Oh, the league will need a name.....naming rights are available!

Hey, here's the thread for next season's competition. We probably won't pick against the spread. Please post any suggestions. I'll update this post as required.

See y'all in September!

Crowdsourced TSA betting advice lol.

If you guys start making money and beating vegas spreads, getting rich etc., I hope you remember us poor folks here running the forum. We could use a donation for better server space, bandwidth, and an IT guy to make it not so buggy. After you secure your own affairs, obviously, but just in case you're so wealthy you don't know what to do with it all ... ;).

Lol! Hey, Wilshire, that wasn't betting advice, that was advice on charitable distribution! OK....putting down "TSA Forum" as a beneficiary of possible LEGAL gambling winnings.

Same here, Bolivar! Spread or straight-up?

Flowery language aside - and I'm sure this has come up before in my expression over the years around the forum - I find all existence equally absurd, especially the various ways we human animals prioritize, and also cling to, the "beliefs" we hold over basic compassion for those creatures we happen to find ourselves stranded here with.

Does that absurdity you surmise a result of your perceived insight or lack of understanding of what is going on?

Also, isn't compassion a belief with the same status as other beliefs?

Regardless, the writer was unclear, I think you'll agree.
I never clicked on the link in your OP. I was simply asking a question about the quote embedded in Tleilaxu's post.
I find most writers unclear when I don't ... you know ... actually read the writing.
Knowing the context of something before jumping into the middle of it is usually helpful - I think you'll agree.

Wilshire, I was specifically commenting on what appeared to be point #35 of 74 points. If my assumption that what Tleilaxu excised from the full article was sufficient in itself is wrong, so be it. Tleilaxu apparently believed that what he quoted didn't require extensive context.

That's f***ed up.

Actually, Madness, I never clicked on the link in your OP. I was simply asking a question about the quote embedded in Tleilaxu's post.

Cheers!

Hey, TSA Forum, just a quick canvass: Any interest in a competition in picking NFL winners week-by-week next season? I've always enjoyed it. We could go straight-up winners or against the point spread. I'd be willing to organize the thing. Strictly for fun and bragging rights, though....not really into putting real money on the line.

+1

Sure, zero cost, little effort to maintain; sounds good to me.

H reads me like a book....

Helluva story. Nick Saban replaces his starting QB at halftime with the backup, a true freshman. Tua T. proceeds to lead 'Bama on five scoring drives, including the dagger of a 41-yard touchdown strike to another true freshman WR for victory in overtime.

ROLL. DAMN. TIDE.
