Ok I get what you mean now Wilshire thanks.

If Meta-Gnostic is something close to the maximum strength for the Gnosis is Meppa the Psukhe equivalent?

Woule love a Fane Revelation Tale.

If these novels ever went mainstream Bakker could just milk the short stories there are so many things that could be told. The breaking of the gates is something else i would like to read.

NecroPost

I think it will be revealed Kellhus is Good. I think he broke on the Circumfix, really did perform a miracle and really does seek to end damnation for the sake of humanity and has now abandoned his Dunyain goals. Believing he is "more". I think he will end up the tragic failed hero.

I love that scene. I dont think it is as ambiguous as a lot of people. He reaches into his own chest and pulls out Serwes heart after removing frames of reference from reality then he sets it on fire. Dude is clearly BOSS!

All hail Kellhus!

Thanks Wilshire I think I am starting to understand your thinking now.

So you think the various magics are all ways that the Sorcerors sing in the voice of the "Ur-Soul/God" but some to a lesser extent. So the ultimate extension of that would be singing in the voice of everything. Removing all frames. Like when Mandati apply the logical extensions to the SS Analogies and form the Abstractions they sing with more understanding, more of the Ur-Soul. When Kellhus adds the 2nd Innuteral he speaks with more of the Ur-Soul and can achieve greater feats, like the pounding of the Sranc.

I have a sticking point, where do you place the Cish in this? I just see the Psukhe as a different metaphysics and thats where my opinions blur.

Cleric told her they only burn the greatest and he was reverant over the Qirri to an extent. I think its implied in the textual evidence and in Mimaras belief but it is by no means explicit.

Wilshire are you assuming death is not the mechanism of ascension? Just trying to understand your line of thought.

My point is if the gods are timeless agencies - in that they see all of time instantly (sort of like an information pile up on the Event Horizon of a Black Hole) there can be no new gods, not within the existing timeline. The emergence of a new god is not possible as if all gods are timeless then said god already exists.

What I am saying simply is that if Kellhus does ascend at some future time in the novels then he is already ascended because to the gods time is meaningless so Kellhus would already have seen all of creation.

It reminds me of Novikovs Self Consistency Theory, any event giving rise to a Paradox has its probability value reduced to 0% so Kellhus has either already ascended and is already a god or he does not and is not.

I suspect that Bakker has not given too much thought to the timelessness agency of the gods and it is a side distraction - I could be wrong.

When Kellhus leaves then they continue. The Conditioning in Ishual could be so strong that Kellhus never had a thought of his own. Interesting re-reading the Ishual scenes from the point of view of the Pragma as Dunyain once you know Dunyain capability.

On the other hand though - we are told Kellhus is something of a prodigy, even among the prodigious Dunyain, an outstanding Intellect standing above Genius?

Sharmat what you say about the Circumfix resonates with me - but I would add that in TWP we saw a number of hints at Kellhus humanity and I generally believe that Kellhus believes he is something more. IMO Kellhus is more, he tore Serwes heart from his own chest and set it aflame in his hand.

(Opens Nutshell)

Well I am in my mid 20's. Two kids to keep me busy. Work in a senior position in an IT company. Involved in a lot of things with my work but generally Project Management on corporate scale project, design through to implementation, nice job to be doing at my age and decent money.

Hobbies:

Gaming:
Meyna gratz on the solo. I used to play WoW before I had my kids but mainly played 2s, 3s and 5s arena. I was actually ranked in a couple of seasons. Stopped playing hardcore after defeating LK Heroic difficulty as Druid raid healer/leader when ICC was current content. Got the "Of the Alliance" title for killing over 100,000 horde bastards. Now I generally play a few RPG's/racing games/fps on PS3 and anything PS1 emulated on my Kindle Fire HD.

Reading: Fairly obvious one this. I have read hundreds of Sci Fi and Fantasy novels, generally I find an author I like and just read everything. SF and Fantasy for me. Read about 2-3 books a month on a bad month and have been doing that since about 11 years old.

TV: Enjoying Game of Thrones and recently The Walking Dead. Enjoy most stuff Sci-Fi/Fantasy as long as its well made. Also a big fan of homemade British dramas. Most things on TV are American but every now and again we get an absolutely brilliant British Drama - I don't know why but British Dramas are the best on TV - maybe just because they resonate with me because I am English.

Films: Big film buff here. Watch most things as soon as they are available and try to watch a broad range.

Pretty athletic guy, play football twice a week and cycle an average of 6 miles a day with 20 miles on weekends.

So that's me in a nutshell.

Akka has been described as a War Cant Master and Sorcerer of The Rank. Granted he gives these descriptions to himself but we know Akka does not blow his own trumpet too much and his actions seem to tie in with this.

I think that Akka is not politically or personally powerful within the Mandate hierarchy due to Proyas rejection of him and Mandate teaching, however I do believe that Akka has attained the highest possible ranking within the Mandate so is Sorcerously powerful. Nautzeru clearly holds him in respect despite his political blunderings.

Lets not forget Elezearas shits his pants when Akka is even near him in PoN and muses on how a Mandati field spy can cow the Leader of the greatest school in the three seas.

Personally I think since the Slog of Slogs Akkas power is really developing. Who knows what effect eating Qirri from a Nonman Super-Quya will do? As well as eating the Qirri that Cleric was feeding him. Can anyone refresh my memory who the Nonman Qirri was from that Incariol was feeding them at the start?

If we are speculating an ascendance from Kellhus then can we assume Moenghus and Sejenus also ascended. Sejenus was said to ascend to the nail of heaven from the same spot Moenhgus died. Wonder if this has any relevance. Food for thought.

General Earwa / Re: Why do you like this series?
« on: May 20, 2014, 01:03:17 pm »
Same reasons as everyone else.

1. Epic moments: Sometimes the fanboy moments literally make me drool. Library of Sauglish. Siege of Shimeh. Travelling through Cil Aujas. Akka and Cleric vs Wutteat. Seriously epic moments!

2. Characters - Odd one for me this, first read I hated everyone except Kellhus who I thought was THE MAN. I hated Esmi and Akka for being weak and flawed. I think I was expecting usual fantasy types - heroes who are flawed are normally positively flawed. My re-read totally changed my opinion, I was an adult during my re-read and had children and a changed world view. I now appreciate flawed characters and see them as real. For me, after my re-read I just love Akka. Kellhus is still THE MAN but I have a place in my heart for Akka.

3. World building - I am a huge fan of good solid world building and Bakkers is some of the deepest and most subtle. Bakker always shows, he never tells. The extent of realism is great.

4. Prose - Quite simply the best prose I have ever read. I found the lyrical and poetic style similar to Stephen R Donaldson, I appreciated this much more on my re-read which leads me into my last point.

5. Layers of revelation - I have never read something where a re-read was so rewarding and actually gave me more than the initial read. The first times I read PoN I thought it merely about Kellhus dominating the three seas, a re-read was so different.

Come on TUC!

Count me in for some co-ordinated buying.

I would risk damnation and dinner with Xioz if I could get my hands on TUC!

Hello all,

Well I enjoyed the Podcast very much. Nice to hear introductions from FB, Wilshire and Madness. Ill make a few comments myself before the review.

I read TDTCB back in 2004 at quite a youngish age (certainly in terms of my reading as I had only read a few dozen fantasy books at this point) I can truthfully say most of the philosophy and general Bakker musings went over my head - I think I skimmed a lot of the material so got an overall feel for it. In 2006 I then read TWP and TTT and my interest in the series was definitely revived. At the time I could find nothing online about Bakker and none of my friends had read Bakker. I loaned him to few friends only to get him back a few weeks later with puzzled looks and complaints about the complexity of the prose.

I completely forgot about the series until last year when I noticed WLW and TJE. Bought both and re-read the whole series. This is not the first time I have re-read a series, but it is the first time a re-read has given me more than an initial read. The layers of revelation were just astounding. Since my second read I feel like a complete Bakker nut and the TSA is one of, if not my favourite series of all time.

So that's how I discovered TSA. So on with my review:

Positives:
The content was very good and flowed quickly between topics.
No single person took over too much of the time.
Very balanced dialogue with speculations clearly noted.
Good references to material

Negatives:
Although the conversation flowed well the structure was not clear. Personally I would focus on a single topic per podcast - the topics are so intertwined you will end up touching multiple topics but setting a clear agenda will help - especially when people want to go back and listen to previous podcasts.
I thought the Podcast was a little bit too long, I think cutting by a 3rd would be productive. 40 minutes Podcast in total which can be broken down 5 minutes intro, 35 for content and 5 for close down and discussion of next podcast topic - linking the podcasts and informing the next topic will keep people listening.
Although references were used to good effect it would be more efficient to ensure Kindle versions are available as well as any maps necessary. I was laughing when you guys were placing the Ordeals current location and trying to name the mountain! Maybe I can help with this as I have all version in Paperback and also in .mobi
Also be careful when using Spoilers for other novels - Dune is next on my May reading list!

Trivial:
Great to think of Moenghus arc as potentially unfinished. Love that I am not alone or crazy for loving Cnaiur.

So overall I though the content was good - I really enjoyed listening to you guys. I would be happy to be in the next Podcast with you three illustrious gentlemen.

In the meantime let me look into an alternative hosting solution for the Podcasts.

Great to actually see a Bakker community as I primarily joined westeros for the Bakker threads.

Heard about the Podcast over on the westeros forums. Posted a message to Madness offering to help with any technical/hosting as I work in IT - the hosting server you are using at the moment is not great and I could sort something out for that. I would also be happy to speak on the Podcast - get an English accent on there!

I joined westeros for recs and to post in the Bakker threads after reading all the old Three Seas threads I could find (the White Lord and Mithfanion onces on the Q&A were good.) At the time this site was being revamped I think so only just started coming back on here. Same name for me over on westeros and also roamersandlurkers - SilentRoamer :) I have seen you/Madness/FB and others posting over the last few months and have been following your threads a while before joining in.

Maybe change my name to SilentStalker. Haha

Full Podcast review to follow later today.

Hey guys,

Listened to the full Podcast last night - great stuff! I was making gentle notes while watching. Will put a more detailed response here once I have finished work for the day!

I would also be happy to guest on one - might be interesting to have an English accent on the podcast - I found some of your/my pronunciation discrepancies hilarious - although you 3 seemed to agree on them so probably my own English sounding interpretation.
