Literature / Re: Sci Fi series as good as The Second Apocalypse?
« on: May 22, 2014, 07:16:10 pm »
Hey Som,

Yeah I have read the Void. It isnt as good as Nights Dawn or PS/JU but it is a decent read. Some pretty cool concepts which Hamilton always delivers on. At first I found myself quite annoyed by the Eddard stuff but it starts to make some sense later on - I wont go into detail as I cant remember the individual books.

Have you read any of his standalones? I have 1 left to read I think. If you get a copy of Fallen Dragon then definetely read it, I thought it was on a par with Nights Dawn and PS/JU as a really good standalone.

If you like Nights Dawn you will probably like Kevin J Anderson Saga of seven suns as well. Couple too many books and he could have condensed a bit better but the scope of the story is great.

Yeah exactly. There were some really weird differences. Uh What! Major Anderson is black you say? Also a woman? The fact that Rackham was not a reveal felt a bit off but I can see why they changed that. The Giant Game seemed really insignificant in the film - wish we saw the giant eat him a few times.

I thought the battle room scenes were superbly done though and i was totally geeked out.

I wish it would have made money so we could have gotten a sequel but I dont see SftD adapting well to film.

Not sure if mentioned but I would love to see the breaking of the gates and also the presenting of the tusk from the Inchies.

Devious Inchi bastards!

I always liked the aliens in the Darkwar/Demonwar/Chaoswar Saga's by Feist.  Too bad he wasn't slightly more talented to flesh out all of the potential that was there.

The problem is Feist is talented. Don't get me wrong the guys is no Tolkien but Feist can write - I mean Magician was brilliant. Problem was the rate at which Feist was writing these books they were only ever going to be OK. If you look at the schedule - the books start coming thicker and faster following the Empire Trilogy, it was also after this that the decline in quality and size came into effect.

Such a shame! I recently finished the Magicians End which was the last Feist novel and completed my read of all his works - it was simultaneously satisfying to get a conclusion and disappointing in how it came about.

Cant really say he is similar to Bakker but Peter F Hamilton never fails to entertain me, he weaves a good space opera yarn.

I just finished reading Assassins Apprentice. It was very heavily recced over on the other forum.

I thought it was well written, if a little odd to be in the First Person Past Tense narrative. A little too slow in parts for my liking with a lot of attention on Fitz feelings. I do think it could have given away a bit more about the Skill and the Wit but probably good that it doesnt to keep interest in the trilogy. Overall an enjoyable read but not one I would be reccomending above other reads which I have enjoyed more.

Literature / Re: David Gemmell
« on: May 21, 2014, 10:01:41 pm »
Gemmell will always have a soft spot in my heart. Gemmell is the reason I started reading Fantasy. A freinds dad was into reading and lent me Dark Moon. I was 11 years old. I cannot describe how epic that story is at 11 years old, Dace/Tarantio, Duvodas, the Eldarin Pearl and the big hulking Daroth. Not sure its an appropriate read for 11 years old though haha

I have since read everything Gemmell has written which I think is about 40 novels.

I will remember Gemmell for the characters - not the baddies, they were almost always of a similar order. The goodies though - oh the goodies. Druss, Waylander and Connovar. The Connovar stuff was probably my favourite.

The novels tied into each other as well. Last Sword of Power series tying into the Greek Series which also tied into Jon Shannow with the Sipstrassi - actually tied in very loosely to the rigante early stuff as well. Then a couple of the standalones had the Source which was pretty cool.

Such a shame Gemmell has passed, his Troy stuff was some of his most well written yet and I think given another decade he would have written his finest works.

Yeah I loved most of the Ender stuff. Only thing that bugged me really was how Achilles also ended up being a genius and he was just some street brat as well.

SftD for me was great but the original EG is awesome - I remember reading the G scenes and having such a vivid idea.

Did anyone see the films? What did they think of it? Lots of little homages to the book if you were looking.

Just as title says. Anyone like to post some aliens they like in Sci-Fi - tell me your reasons.

Ill start with two:

MorningLightMountain from Peter F Hamilton Commonwealth series. Absolute genocidal maniac. Like an Ultra Nazi that views all other life forms as a potential threat and therefore an enemy and seeks to ensure it continued survival into the far future.

The Hydrogues from Kevin J Anderson Saga of the Seven Suns just really alien and peculiar and I found them pretty scary antagonists.

General Earwa / Re: Akka's "Power Level"?

I think Akka would demolish Sacarees now he has Qirri-Boost!

Wonder how Meppa compares - I would have to say Meppa would be stronger based on the capabilities of the Cish Primaries and how he is a "torrent" of water.

The White-Luck Warrior / Re: Kellhus: good or evil?
« on: May 21, 2014, 12:39:41 pm »
I agree Wilshire but I spent the whole of TJE waiting for Kellhus POV. When I realised now Kellhus POV I was SERIOUSLY pissed off!

I literally screamed at the end of the book: "No Kellhus POV, Bakker you trolling fucker!"

I was amazed when I heard the Heart-Ass theory. Text is pretty explicit that he pulls Serwes heart from his own chest - you can interpret that as you will but sleight of hand does not play a part!

Thankyou!

Oddly enough it was on my reread where I changes my opinion. First read I read Kellhus as amoral bastard. Second read I see him as the saviour of mankind. I think Kellhus believes he is the saviour of mankind and would murder a thousand-thousand infants to bring about the saviour of Man.

It is actually strange to have a protagonist with such mysterious motives.

I think the Qirri was Cujara so I will except that as my truth. Whoever it ultimately was it definetely upped Akkas power level.

As the title says Akkas power level, where does everyone think Akka stands now in terms of individuals? Maybe needs a new thread or one already exists with some kind of power level ranking? Kind of ties in with http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1328.0
