Planescape Torment - Dialogue, Storyline, Cast, Ending, Concepts.
Star Control II - Dialogue, Storyline, Cast, Ending, Concepts. Loved the ship fights, music, and sound effects.
Quest For Glory I, II, IV - Sierra was in its Golden Years when they made these. I even liked QFG III, but can't justifiably put it up as the best.
Baldur's Gate all the way to Tears of Baal - Fun game, loved the party dynamics, only problem is you can level up to the point where the final battle is a joke.
Time killing fun:
Might and Magic II
Eye of the Beholder I & II

Deus Ex and DX: Human Revolution. It's more RPG than shooter. (The less said about DX2: invisible war, the better)
-
Loved Final Fantasy VII and X
Also a huge fan of all the Assassins Creed games. Mostly for the story and combat, though I guess its and action game and not a whole lot of RPG.
-
Knights of the Old Republic II: Nietsche with tits shows up and shits all over the Star Wars universe. Written by the guy that wrote Planescape: Torment.
Neverwinter Nights: Mask of the Betrayer. The familiar theme of whether damnation is ever justified, brilliantly written and acted.
-
Fallout - though confused by #2.

Just adding those who have been left out
Arcanum - Steampunk meets Fantasy. Solidified my love for CRPGs
Vampire:the Masquerade
I miss Troika.

I gotta go with the Elder Scrolls, although Skyrim, while solid, was not as good as Morrowind or Oblivion in my opinion.
I am with Wilshire on the Assasins Creed games. They are not RPG but the entire series so far has been excellent. Up there with the Uncharted and Mass Effect games in terms of quality.

Oblivion was the worst game in the Elder Scrolls series in my mind.
Also everyone in this thread should be donating to this:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity

That goes without saying....we place the fate of cRPG gaming in the hands of Avellone and Fargo.

i've played other games after torment, but that game jumped the shark for the entire genre. might as well hang it up. the crpg has apotheosized.

Have you played NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer? The engine is ghastly but the story is top notch

Skyrim is the steel to other RPGs bronze (like the Gnosis to the Anagogic, you see... :D )
I saved the game at multiple times just to savor the sheer visual grandeur of it. Especially the first time I visited the Temple of Azura while looking at Winterhold off in the distance -- it's like walking straight into a icy world of legend. Literally made me gasp in wonder.
I do wonder what the people of Norway think of the game. From what I hear the game comes straight out of the landscape of Norway. It's like the designers pirated that whole country
-
Torment - for the storyline and characters.
Baldurs Gate I - for engine an overall feel.
-
I am from Norway and the landscapes in skyrim are very similar indeed:)
It was like taking a walk in the woods outside my house:)

Since it's living.
Mario RPG
Legend of Zelda
Final Fantasy's that Wilshire didn't reference
Chrono Trigger

Dragon's Dogma.
Kingdoms of Amalur.
I had a lot of fun playing Dragon's Dogma. I'd recommend it. If you get the Shivering Isles release it comes with an extra dungeon thats totally worth it. The combat is real time and, at least for me, extremely enjoyable. The level cap is 200 and there is a new game+ feature that some find entertaining. For me, leveling to 100+ in Shivering Isles and collecting some of the insane end-game gear was a lot of fun, probably spent 100 hours on it if not more. I with the dev team had more money, because this game could have been a real gem. Its dark and gritty, especial the option dungeon. Play it.
Also another with a good combat system was Kingdoms of Amalur. The team who put it together spent a ton of money on it, and it shows. End game is a bit underwhelming, but the crafting and leveling system is good and the story/sidequests are fun. Combat draws you and and keeps things entertaining for a while, though I would have loved to see some better post-game content (without DLC there isn't any to speak of, and I don't often do DLC). A much lighter atmosphere than Dragon's Dogma, and although shorter, still a great game in its own right.

Final Fantasy VII
Suikoden I & II
Front Mission III
Xenogears
Lost Odyssey
Secret of Mana
KotoR I & II
I have played many more, but those are the games that I remember.

Remember... So they caused you great pain? That sounds terrible.

It's all relative Wilshire... ;)

Lol. Those definitions are interesting but also have some unreasonable premises.

Haha this brightened my day.

I started replaying FFX on an emulator so that I could get the PAL/International edition in order to get access to an additional boss called Penance.
I thought it fitting when Sin destroys Kilika Port the debris swirls around it and he looks like a hurricane. Sin = No-God.

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 for the SNES.
I loved these games as a kid and I love them till today.
Quite remarkable games ( Ok, I AM nostalgic about it, but my avatar might say something about my love for those games, :D...)
I play Secret of Mana every two years, last year with a challenging hard mode.

Now I know 2 and 3 were pretty bad, at least the way they finished, but I really enjoyed the first Fable game. It was certainly magical in its own right and I played it around the age where the fantasy genre was all I could think about. The RPG aspect, while not as free-form as the Elder Scrolls games, was still a fun experience. All 3 games had pretty decent battle mechanics and I actually enjoyed most of the NPC encounters (and kicking the shit out of chickens). Fable 2 would have probably been my favorite if not for the giant middle finger of an ending they decided to throw at you...
-
+1 Raizen. Loved the feel of that game, although I never played 2 and 3.
-
2 and 3 introduce guns, which I was pretty hesitant at first but they do grow on you. The feel is still the same in 2 and 3 but it grows in size. 2 is set more in a settler "new frontier" setting and 3 is set during an industrial kingdom time period, sort of like the French revolution. 2 was great the whole way through until an ending without a boss battle...literally no boss, a cut scene does it for you...but 3 was definitely much better, I actually enjoyed it almost as much as 1. EDIT: It just wasn't as satisfying and it took a bit of a beating in some reviews.
Plus, there's a new one coming out set before game 1 in the age of Heroes!! ;D
