I just finished this so I want to gloat about being right about Kelmomas/Samarmas being the real Harbinger and Kellhus being a red herring.

*Fist Bump*  Gloat away, my brother.

I second Ars Magica. Although I haven't played it personally, I've heard enough from friends to know that it seems like it would not necessarily be unsuitable for such things.

It would be workable.  The magic system would have to be hacked, but that's fairly easy to do.  The downtime system might need to be reworked (or it might not), depending on the kind of campaign you're running.

I thought the removal of the Chorae was to avoid turning a certain vital component to salt.

kel hasnt used magic yet so chorae shouldnt effect him.

It wasn't prepared for him.  The Consult prepared it for Kelhus, who is very much Marked.

That would be a nice logical conclusion for the real world but since this is a book I assume we're meant to notice this and be drawn to this one untouched guy among all surviving Dunyain.

Is it possible he came to Golgotterath by an entirely different route? Hm.

How did the Consult first find Ishuäl, anyway?

Searching obsessively since the ending of The Warrior-Prophet.  They had a lot of time and manpower.

Probably off topic, but there was a forum where Bakker almost casually mentions that the Tusk was a Consult contrivance, and it has steered men since their passage from Eanna(misspelled?), basically demanding the death of the Nonmen, and sorcerers, but acknowledging the existence and even the names of the Gods. Why would it do that?  The Consult wanted the Cishaurim dead.  And that God.  Damned.  Nail of Heaven floating around that I KNOW can't just be a star.  Too much about the Consult we just don't have the right perspective on to allow us to even ask the right questions.  It's an itch, but I'm not sure where it is, so I can't scratch it.  Drives me crazy, but in a good way.

You've completely missed what's going on with the Tusk.  The Inchoroi put all of humanities myths on the Tusk and inserted a few of their own to direct them against Nonmen and sorcery.  If the Inchoroi hadn't covered the Tusk with human myths, humans wouldn't have regarded it as a holy object which means the Inchoroi have to be sparing with their editions for it to be accepted as authentic. The Cishaurim didn't exist back then and the reason why the Consult wanted them dead was because Moenghus was finding their skin spies.

I still don't buy it. The Consult was innovating before this. The Skin Spies were new. He had no way of knowing how recent the nuke being salvaged was, either. Hell, how did he even know it was a nuke?

It's basically down to Dunyain magic.

The glossary indicates similar devices were used in the Nonmen-Inchoroi wars.

In the halls, Akka is punched by a Sranc with a Chorae in it's fist.  That's an inch away from flesh at most. Also, you're probably right about his Mark being deeper.  He whips out a lot of sorcery in the next two books, not to mention the next 20 years.

The speech is that of Dunyain talking to another Dunyain, trying to force him to yield to their circumstances.  It's not at all like Shauriatas as he's been presented in previous conversations.

Also I can see all sorts of fake Chorae scams (Tears of God=splinters of the True Cross).  Sleight of hand switches or sucker moves to bait the mark into bringing money to where he can be robbed ("I represent a family that would rather their declining fortunes isn't made public.  They are willing to sell one of their chorae, if the right price can be reached")

[EDIT Madness: Added spoiler tag for content that's from books ahead of this subforum (WLW, TGO, TUC).]

Tbh I'm not buying it. Too much of a "gotcha", too much colored string and dots being connected behind the scenes for a pretty lukewarm "twist": that it was Shae all along.

Bakker's tendency to do big surprise reveals and to present fairly opaque but punchy metaphors leads to a tendency for members of this board to shoot off down strange paths based some of the more unusual passages.  This forum is thick with pet theories.

It's a good quote.  Probably her Mark is so strong because of her heinous Anasurimbur strength.  In that case, it's probably the fact that it was a graze that allows her to be "merely" maimed.  It is, now that I consider the matter, one of the few times we see a glancing hit with Chorae on a sorcerer of rank.

I can't find the quote anywhere, but I seem to remember someone, somewhere talking about how the deeper the mark, the MORE influenced by Chorae.  Kellhus got touched?  Insta-dead(presumably ;))  Serwa gets grazed, and she losses most(?) of her arm.  Meta-Gnostic cuts both ways, apparently.

I remember it.  There's a line about Nonmen Quya who are so deeply Marked that they'll apparently start salting within an armslength of a Chorae.

oh, right, sorry - you'all talking about rpg - i've had my full of KS, starting to compromise my brain. For RPG, you can simply create a D&D or Gurps Fantasy campaign with Earwa as the world. Think Bakker said PON books came from his original idea for an RPG campaign ( think it was D&D ).

Sure you can, but (I don't really know Gurps) but D&D isn't very good mechanically for doing Earwa.  You can do a low effort reskin, but that's all it will be.

There's a small passage during the assault where some more of the consult appear, i can't remember names one was the lord of poison though, and some other names. The Lord of Poison was a Nonman i believe.

Yeah, some Erratics show up (who may or may not be "Consult") but I don't recall any Mangaecca.
