General Earwa / Infidelity and the High Kings of Kûniüri

Quote from: Jorge
Something has been bugging me for a while.

There are scenes in the text that imply that Seswatha was having an affair with Anasurimbor's queen at some point. The implication is that some part of the Anasurimbor lineage might actually be his line (and it is heavily implied Nau-Cayuti is actually his son). However, Nau-Cayuti presumably dies before having children, and Kellhus can trace his lineage back to Celmomas II through Ganrelka II.

However, if Seswatha was getting it on with the king's consorts at various points, who says that every Anasurimbor character we've met thus far isn't actually his descendant? It boils down to the question: who was Ganrelka II's father?

General Earwa / Signed books

Based on what I've heard, Bakker fairly loathes promoting himself and his books.

That said, where might one go to keep track of book signing opportunities with Bakker? I can't think of many things that would be more exciting than meeting him and having him sign one of my SA books.

I've also done some searches on the google machine, and there just doesnt seem to be many of his signed books for sale anywhere. Though I would much prefer to have him sign of my own of course.

edit
-------------
so I had the phenomenal opportunity to meet RSB and have him sign a couple of my books. pretty fuckin' sweet.

General Earwa / Earwan genetics

I don't know if this has come up before but does anyone else think the genotype of a child in Earwa is determined (almost) completely by the father? It's stated multiple times that it's folk wisdom that the mother only acts as a vessel and in Earwa folk wisdom becomes reality. Consider that

  • Kellhus needs Esme as an incubator because regular worldborn women can't handle his Dunyain seed. When he tries to conceive children with his concubines they die or birth abominations.
  • The Five Tribes of Men. The glossary in TTT says they are "The five rough cultural and racial groups that migrated into the Earwic subcontinent...". However, there is nothing rough about the racial aspect. As far as I can remember every person fits perfectly into one of the racial categories. There is no mention of anything like a half Norsirai half Ketyai or anything like that.
  • All of Kellhus and Esmenet's children appear Norsirai but Cnaiur and Serwa's child appears Scylvendi. This isn't conclusive because it could just be that Scylvendi traits are dominant over Norsirai ones which are dominant over Ketyai ones. However, it's also consistent with the theory that the father determines the child's characteristics.
Are there any other people in the series who we know have parents of different races?

General Earwa / PON for twits (tweets)

Quote from: Callan S.
I jokingly challenged someone to describe a book they mentioned on twitter in 125 characters or less (or whatever number of characters you get). And they did.

So it made me think of what glib line I could describe atleast TDTCB/the PON series. I was thinking something like

"Reason incarnate walks the earth of an objective morality fantasy world like a spreading cancer, and that morality begins to unravel"

Whadjathunk?

Edit: Dang, way too long...

General Misc. / Domestic Judgementation

You know those squishy cow toys your supposed to squeeze to relieve stress?

Crap, aren't they?

So how about just banging a door shut forcefully? Just once! Surely it's a way of venting some stress which really doesn't have consequences on others?

Except when actually those aren't panels of wood in it, but painted over panels of glass. And one panel cracks (or cracks further, as their appeared to be lines in the paint already). In the hotel you were staying at.

Just sayin'

General Misc. / [Once Upon A Time]

Yes, I enjoy this! Though sometimes I have to repeat that its supposed to be a fairy tale world, when it comes to new age infected characterisation (The mum arranges her sons marriage...then appologises latter? Wha?)

I just enjoyed a quote last night where the evil queen convinces a girl, somewhat romantically entangled with Rumplestiltskin (foreskin!) to return as a kiss of true love will break the curse. Then the evil queen busts out the line

"But who am I to suggest you kiss your captor? What sort of message would that be sending?"

Just love how it touches on all the politics about fiction arguments and instead of those arguments getting to be outside of fictional focus themselves, the fiction lashes out and makes sure they come under the scope as well. Yes, you can't just argue about the fiction and so escape being its subject - it's watching you too, dearie.

Heh, I'll flatter myself - it reminds me of what I wanted to put in a story - the 'They'. The They are these incredibly powerful, glowy white beings, drifting through a fantasy world, correcting it's egrious errors and failings of it's people (all the while the They are utterly powerful...and so live in ivory towers, enacting their agenda upon the peoples without knowing what it's like to live in that difficult fantasy world). They are pruience and prudishness personified.

General Misc. / [ Fight Cycle ] Persistant Browser Game

I wrote this in a non contiguous 7 days or so. Though really how long did it take to learn everything up to it? A lifetime? Anyway, I wrote it so as to write something I could just finish, instead of another started and aborted beginning of a grand project never completed. And even as it's relatively simple it still pushed at my abilities, in order to finish it. That was another reason to write a simpler one - man's gotta know his (current) limitations.

It's a cute little battler - I like that you can win it and get your name on the front page during the next 14 day cycle, as well as recorded in it's history (really aught to add some code to pull names from the history and show them on the front page as well, at some point).

Yeah, I was working on a scalper game (and still am), but was moved to finish something real quick, before taking on another big project.

Anyway, give in to your urge to lord over others and leave long lasting wounds on their PC's! That's how I wrote it and I play it too (user name: Blake)!

In case those of you who lurk through the Misc. Chatter topics don't typically look into the other boards, there has recently been a brief conversation about a forum re-read. If you think its a good idea, or want to participate, or think its a terrible idea, or have other thoughts, there is a new topic under the TDTCB board.

Go there, vote, be heard, and help us make this website more useful to the SE universe and the people who have chosen to be apart of it.

General Earwa / Earwa: The Second Apocalysing

Seeing as we have music threads and art, I went ahead with this. Bit of a fuff post, but what the hell.

We've all known for ages now that Mr. Bakker's great work developed out D&D sessions he played with his brother some 20 years ago. And I've wondered since I got hooked into the series: anyone tried reclaiming those roots? I mean, surely there are some tabletop gamers among us with an interest. I know I'm no great philosophical mind, but I love the story, the questions it raises, and the magnificent world-building. I've been pondering building a module for the series using White Wolf's World Darkness (new) mortals and some of the other base supplements (no supernaturals, obviously). I've had a hell of a time modeling sorcery, seeing as it is an 'I win' button in purely man-to-man terms. Still pondering Gnosis and I feel Anagogis will be far easier to model.

So, has anyone ever tried this? Run a tabletop game for it?

General Earwa / Ajencis

hello,
i enjoy reading the thoughts and ideas posted on this forum.  Mostly it reveals how much i missed. the plan is to start rereading once i power through some other stuff.

Two part:
Does Ajencis have a larger role to play? A back story that involves him interacting with players we see today(an agent of one faction or another)

What would a meeting between Ajencis and Kell look like? Could a world class intellect hang with the AE?

General Earwa / Nerd up: Bakker's D&D campaigns. Railroaded?
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:03:37 pm »
Quote from: Callan S.
I find myself terribly curious as to whether he was a massive railroader or not, when GMing? Railroading seems a trend rife across the roleplay hobby (how I define it is being given the illusion of a choice, when really you don't have one. Like a magician forcing you to take a certain card, except you know magicians are tricking you).

It's the 'writing up' of adventures that triggers my alarm - it's highly indicative of the prewritten script. Tracks laid in stone...err, if that works as an analogy! lol!

I'm particularly  curious as to whether, if he did railroad, whether he'd be one of those ones who buys into their own lie and would never acknowledge it?

Yeah, he writes all this psychology stuff, so would he end up in such a place?

That's why I'm terribly curious??

And if he didn't, I'm wondering about the format of play in his games?

I spent alot of time on indie-rpgs.com before it finished it's mission and closed up. Game design holds a fascinating issue for me. As I said, nerd up!

General Earwa / Expanded Encyclopedia
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:00:44 pm »
Quote from: Wilshire
Sorry to everyone who got excited and thought that there would be news about it in this first post. I know nothing about it, but I am curious if anyone actually does. I've seen maybe 10 or 15 posts about spread out through all the boards and I thought (yet again) that making a topic for it could be prudent.

Speculation, rumors, facts, theories? Does anyone have anything concrete to offer? Anything that you would give an arm and a leg to see in it?

For me, I almost hope that it will be released as a stand alone novel after TUC, as it is taking Bakker plenty long enough to write it without worrying about an Encyclopedia filled with untold multitudes of short stories and more definitions than you could shake a finger at. However, I doubt it. Bakkers not one to squeeze profits from his books, and he would probably see releasing a stand alone book as a cheap way to make money. I certainly don't think anyone else would see it like that, as his works are always nicely polished, but he is know for a certain amount of self-loathing when it comes to things like that.

General Misc. / An idea on qualia
« on: June 04, 2013, 05:58:53 pm »
Quote from: Callan S.
Seems I can't focus on my php programming for very long...

I once played a game (it was Stalker: Cally of Pripyat) where there's this corridor underground that you explore. The corridor looks pretty a generic abandoned corridor, dusty, cobwebbed. And it goes on for ages.

Except it doesn't go on for ages. As you pass through, without any sound or indicator, it teleports you back down to the start of the corridor. You just keep hitting the same place, but thinking it's seeing something other than what you've already seen.

I was thinking of qualia, like say the colour red, in the same way. You just keep seeing red, you react(/pass down the corridor), but then your back to where you are. That thought experiment where Mary has never seen the colour red - and the question of what she 'learns' when she does see it. Well here the idea is that we are all Mary, over and over again - no one learns anything about the colour. It feels like a raw feel because it'd be like seeing a 'new' face, when your capacity to remember faces has been destroyed. Everyones face would be new and raw, over and over and over again.

The question being, if you humour the scenario, what would you see in red if you could remember, instead of keep seeing it for the first time? Much like if you see a complex painting, at first you don't see all the details, just a vague idea - it takes time and memory to see more. So, would 'red' suddenly start to have details appearing out of it?

General Earwa / What Has Come Before. True or false

This question came up in a different discussion and I thought that it could use its own board.
Is the information in the What Has Come Before sections true, partially true, or false?

If false, can you provide in text examples of contradictions?
