General Earwa / Re: Who'll live through TUC?
« on: August 26, 2013, 10:56:24 am »
Do we have any hints that it is THE WLW or that it is perhaps just A WLW?

I mean could there be more than one WLW in play? Sure we have the stuff with Psatma etc. but maybe that is just one of Yatwer's arrows against the Demon? I still think that Sorweel could be a WLW ... i mean with all the Yatwer stuff going on with him and him being in the proximity of Kellhus, the Demon.
Maybe the other WLW (i think it'd be cool if it were Cnaiur) is there to fill another role...for example to destroy the vessel that can carry Demon offspring (aka Esmi).

On the other hand if this one WLW in the south indeed is Cnaiur reborn, i think that Scott will pit him against Kellhus...because lets face it, that is THE confrontation of the first trilogy.

Hmm...ok, some (probably) idiotic ramblings (it's too long since i read all the books)

I really want Kellhus to die...i hate this character since the TWP. Unfortunately, i don't think i will get what i want. Somehow i think Kellhus might be the next No God.

Or maybe that's Kelmomas (he creeps me out).

I really hope Serwa will live...i like her  ;D I also want to see some more action out of Kellhus' two oldest sons (Moenghus and Kayutas). So i hope they live although i think it is very likely that at least one of them dies.

Mimara and her JE will be needed so i think she'll live.

Btw (as i said, the reading of the books is some time ago, so please be gentle ;) ), do we know who the WLW is? I think not. I always thought it'd be ironic if Sorweel is the WLW. Maybe he even kills Kellhus (or at least it seems that way).

And what i have read so far, i do not think Akka end Esmi will get a reunion happy end kind of thing  ;D

Nice post, Francis.

I do not agree with all you said, but overall i liked it.

Two things that i wanted to pick out:

Quote
Lots of twists and turns (no one can say it's predictable).

To be honest, this is only true of his first book (the unpredictability). I think the first book and Ned's End really got everyone by surprise. After that...not so much. For example, it always surprises me how many people were totally flabbergasted by the red wedding...i so saw this coming from page 1 of the 3rd Book.

Quote
It's very clear that GRRM is extremely passionate about his work and, if anything, is willing to sacrifice popularity for his own idea of "getting it right". I mean this is the same guy that made his fans wait ten years...ten years...to find out what happened to the characters that are generally considered the "most popular". He doesn't really seem like the type of dude who gives a fuck what people think of his shit.

Meh...i don't know how passionate he is anymore...there is a reason why we had to wait ten years for one book (book 4 and 5 are one book, don't let anybody fool you) but i don't think it is his passion. He was doing tons and tons of stuff (also for other novel-universes he writes in) just not continuing on his major work. He was a lazy ****. And if you read all the whining and grinding he did on his blog about fans who wanted to know when the f*** he would sit down on his ass again and start writing...i really don't think that the way you paint him is acurate.

Anyway... don't get me wrong, i really like ASoIaF...it's still in my top 5. But unfortunately the quality of the series and my appreciation of Martin (as a writer) has dropped considerably. And to be honest, as we now have a show on top of all the other things he is doing (Con here, signing there, wildcard novel there, coop with other authors over here...he's doing everything just to not-have-to-write SoIaF), i am not sure we will see book 6 anytime soon (even if he says progress goes well...i just don't have any trust in him anymore).

His travel schedule is not the reason that the last two books took so long.  They took so long because of rewriting and discarding ad infinitum.

I know.
It was just a semi-humorous response to Wilshire's post about him wishing Bakker would travel more.

@ Wilshire - What happened to all the fans of the old Three Seas forum? Do you know that? I remember that first forum to be very active and Scott even participating himself. He even had that forum and the two admins in his dedication in at least one of the books.

Not sure if i want that...that is where Martin-ian madness lies aka 6 years for half a book. Martin hops from con to con not doing anything else it seems...especially not writing his damn SoIaF. We don't want to risk Scott discovering the easy life  ;) ;D

I'm sure that is what he meant...but it wouldn't have made for a good and funny reply, right?!  :P ;D

You mean like going over there and babysit his kid for free so that he can concentrate on writing?  ;D

Kellais, I've enjoyed your perspective immensely, insofar as you've shared. Cheers - glad you decided to add your writ to our proceedings.

Hey, just see this now...thanks, Madness  :) I'm glad my ramblings are understandable stuff  ;D

@ Callan S.

Very true about the just-world fallacy and the real world...a kind of a "ouch"-moment  ;D

And how is the red wedding, even from Rob's POV ever an epic moment...those people have a extremely different brain-wiring to my own. I hope you'll tease them with a new thread on the topic...i would really like to see that  ;)

Well, you know, Madness, maybe you just have to sell me on the concept and why it is so cool  ;)
Oh and has he? I mean the ark is obviously a ship from space. This can still be very much fantasy-like and not all that sci fi like (meaning: the ship is very much magi-tech and not hard sci fi aka real tech stuff).

Oh and Wilshire, i have one big franchise where the wormholes are not triangular....Stargate  ;D So you can relax ;)

The Judging Eye / Re: Reread - Questions and discussion

Cool! Thanks guys for participating. Awesome ideas, all!

So you guys seem to think that it is the in-world functions that we should consider...but you do seem to think that the JE and also the visions of Psatma are, in that sense, real?! So it's not something as simple as Mimara being crazy or that the consult is playing games with Psatma. Hmm...interesting. I was really considering Scott just messing with us ... you know, kind of out-of-world messing with us as the author. From an in world perspective he lets us see stuff that makes sense in the context of the world he paints, but behind the scenes he is kind of teasing us with his theories about the consciousness and brain functions and all that.

On the other hand, i guess Somnambulist's theories kind of account for that...at least a bit.

But i think the basic idea is cool...so she can, with the power of her mind/imagination force reality...that's severe shit  ;D
Question is, though, is it real for everyone after she imposes it on the world? Or is this more in line of the philosophical line of thinking of "everything is just a dream" or "everyone only perceives his/her own "reality" and it is 100% subjective" aka "no two "realities" are the same" . Ouch...my head hurts  ;D

Oh and Madness, care to elaborate on that title remark? Is that a thing on this forum?  ;)

OMG...i have to differ here from Madness...i really really hope it is not a space station or Mothership. A mythical star thingy explanation is way cooler and much more "fantasy" to me...ymmv and all that.
I'm already not a big fan of all the sci fi elements in the PoN and AE ... so the less there is of it, the better for my tastes. For example the Heron Spear loses so much if i picture it as a simple laser-rifle instead of a cool magical artifact...it's not even funny anymore  ;D
But i think i will be very much in the minority on this...obviously mixing sci fi into fantasy is very much en vogue  :-\ :-X

The Judging Eye / Reread - Questions and discussion
« on: August 13, 2013, 04:20:13 pm »
Hi everyone,

So after signing up here i had to urge to start rereading TJE....let us see how long i can keep it up (have a lot of enticing looking books on my "to read" pile  ;D ).

Here some first thoughts and questions - or to put it another way, let me know what you think about this stuff:

- Mimara's judging eye...first appearance when she looks at Akka during their first long talk at the fire before his tower. Now, i was wondering (and maybe there already is a thread somewhere where you discussed that indepth, but i didn't see a thread-title so here it is (again?) ) ... do you think this really is something we, as readers, have to take at face value? In other words : she really has a judging eye...so Akka is really damned etc etc . What else could it be? After her musings on how Akka and herself have suffered a lot in this life, and Akka more or less confessing that he is most probably mad...what if Mimara is just...well, mad? Maybe she hallucinates that stuff. Any theories and ideas on this? It just got me thinking...maybe i'm paranoid but i can't belief that it is what is says on the tin, so to speak  ;) Or is that precisely what Scott wants us to think and therefor this is exactly how it is... ?! Now you see where this is going right...you could start thinking in circles like that and do that ad infinitum and ad absurdum ... so, let me have it.

- This goes a bit in the same direction but i hope you keep reading  ;) The vision of Psatma Nannaferi at the beginning of the book...where she thinks the goddess herself visits her...do you guys think that this is for real? I mean are the gods in Scott's world real? If they are, do you think they interfere that directly? If not, what is happening here? Is the old priestess just nuts? Or are there darker schemes at work. I could totally see the consult behind this...trying everything to oppose Kellhus, even if they have to play a ruse like this instead of killing him directly.

These two scenes just made me very curious as to how much the reader can take at face value in this trilogy and how much it is the author trying to mislead us. On the one hand i find this very stimulating, on the other it can also be very frustrating  ;D My mind just does not stop thinking about the many possibilities that could be...i'm almost doing a thousandfold thought here  ;D

Anyway, i hope this gives us something to talk about. I'm kind of new here but i was a-little-bit-active on the old three seas forums a long time ago. I'm trying to get back in the saddle  ;)
Maybe this kicks off other discussions on the topic of Bakker's Earwa-work which i think are a bit slow atm.

My question was an honest one  ;) I just was not sure if you agree with me or not. And if you did not agree with me i wanted to add to my post. But i guess as you largely agree, i'm good  ;D

On a more serious note: If your theory about those people is true, i find it hilarious. Because SoIaF is definitely about the world NOT being just and "oh how nice"! If you need such a novel, read something else, right?! I mean, how can anyone not see that. Oh well.
And lol...big public execution is now something important and big? I thought it was humiliating for someone of Ned's posture and renown. And he didn't even get a fair trail or a decent chance of escape.
Now i am curious how they explain their fuzzy-warm-feeling into scenes like the red wedding or the fact that both Stark girls have very harsh fates etc. etc. .
Care to link me to the thread you mentioned on the other forum?
