Interested in reading more Science fiction,so I want some SF recs that are not Dune,Hyperion,Blindsight or Expanse.I already own or read those.

GREAT TASTE IN SCIFI!

I REALLY LIKE FOREVER WAR BY JOE HALDEMAN.

I REALLY LIKE THE RED RISING TRILOGY.  FOR DUNE FANS, THERE IS A LOT TO LIKE.  IT ISN'T DUNE.  IT HAS A BIT OF THE 'HUNGER GAMES' FEEL IN THE FIRST BOOK, BUT THEN IT IS SPACE OPERA WITH SOME OF THE BETTER GRRM DRAMA.

- THIRTEEN BY MORGAN
- AGENT TO THE STARS BY SCALZI (COMEDY)
- A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (FOR THE LANGUAGE--MUST READ BOOK, MOVIE LEAVES OUT THE ENDING)
- THE FIRST FIFTEEN LIVES OF HARRY AUGUST (WHAT IF YOU COULD LIVE YOU LIFE MANY TIMES, TRYING IT OUT DIFFERENTLY EACH TIME, WHAT IF A FEW OTHER PEOPLE COULD DO THAT TOO? A BIT SLOW BUT GREAT FOR THE 'HUMAN' STUFF)
- THE MARTIAN - A WHOLE BOOK ABOUT DIY PROBLEM SOLVING IN SPACE
- THE SPARROW - CATHOLICS TRY TO CONVERT ALIENS, IS NOT COMEDY, A BIT SLOW
- A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ - THE FUTURE IS INCREASINGLY STRANGE AND YET STILL SO HUMAN
- CAT'S CRADLE - VONNEGUT, ICE-9
-THE STONE MAN - TERROR, INEVITABLE, UNSTOPPABLE TERROR
- THE NEVER HERO - EAT PROTEIN, LIFT WEIGHTS, FIGHT MONSTERS
- THE ROAD - AFTER NUKES, CORMAC MCCARTHY
- THE SOUTHERN REACH TRILOGY - VANDEERMER, STRANGE AND TERRIFIYING ENTITIES
- READY PLAYER ONE - SEE IT B4 THE MOVIE COMES OUT
- THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS - ZOMBIES WITH A TWIST
- SPHERE - CRICHTON CLASSIC--IMAGINATION AND REALITY BLUR AND ALIENS
- FUTURISTIC VIOLENCE AND FANCY SUITS - BY THE GUY WHO DID JOHN DIES AT THE END
- ANGELMAKER - SENTENCE ORGASMS
- TIMEQUAKE - MORE VONNEGUT

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO Spoilers] [ TUC Spoilers] MG teaser 3
« on: May 02, 2017, 03:23:11 pm »
I don't get how these teasers work. Was this even a thing I was supposed to care about? I didn't even realize the guy had a son. I don't feel teased.

I'M SORRY--I WAS TRYING TO DISPLAY SOME TANTALIZING THING TO GET EVERYONE STOKED UP ABOUT TUC WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING A SPOILER

The trick, NinthAcolyte, is not minding the details ...

LOL THAT IS TRUE BUT IT MUST BE HARD TO WRITE BECAUSE DIFFERENT READERS MEANS DIFFERENT CONCERNS ABOUT REASONABLE DETAILS

I DON'T MIND THAT THE MAGIC EXPLANATION STOPS AT "METAPHYSICS" BUT I THINK IT DRIVES SOME FOLKS WILD

I WOULD REALLY LIKE MORE ABOUT THE TUSK--THE ACTUAL DOCUMENTS BUT I GET IT THAT BAKKER WANTS IT TRAILING OFF INTO MYSTERY

I just love these parallel constructions—Bakker’s so good at them and keeps them going in TUC

Knowing precludes being

Intro quote from chapter 14:

“To be a Man is to take the frame of a Man as firmament, to be immovable unto oneself.  And to know Man as Man is to be blind to this common frame, to be without knowing.  Thus is knowing the corruption ob being.  And so to learn what it is to be a Man is to cease to be a Man.”

When Oinaral explains to Sorweel about how few Intact remain:

P. 250 “This is how you know that you stand before the lease of my Race…The fact that I stand lucid and Intact before you.”

P. 254-5 “The Aged coddle me…make grand gesture of all the strife I am spared.  At leas some ember of the, they proclaim shall glow long into the black.  But for all their fatuous celebration, I am despised just the same.  Thus the bitter irony of my curse, Son of Harweel.  I am the greatest shame my Kinning has known, a reclusive Scribe among grasping Heroes, and yet only I recall the distinction between honour and corruption…Only I can remember what shame is!”

Sorweel pondering the descent, p. 304:

“Judgment ever belongs to the greater.  He saw himself the way the Injori Ishroi saw Men in days of ancient old, as strutting bests, by turns devious and absurd, rotting even as they lived, shouting boasts from atop their barrow-graves.  Weed or flower, it did not matter, for their time was too short to count anything but the dregs of glory.  Henceforth, his would always be a miscreat life.  And so the last of the boy left to the Son of Harweel died in the Weeping Mountain.”

And to go back to the chapter 14 quote—this is the chapter where Koringhus discovers the ‘truth’ of what it is to be Dunyain and then self-destructs.

And, wow TAE is the most fucked up perversion of a coming of age story.  Poor Sorweel.

AND! TO READ AND ENJOY BAKKER IS TO NOT BE BAKKER AND TO BE BAKKER IS TO BE BLIND TO THRILL OF READING HIS OWN BOOKS

Fair enough.

I think no matter how you slice it, Moe had to die.  I don't think that Kellhus is lying when he thinks to himself that the Thought has outgrown "the soul of it's incubation" (i.e. Moe) and so I do think that the Thought would have needed him gone in that moment or a subsequent one, regardless of anything else.  I think that even with all the victories that Moe had over the world, to gain control of the Cishaurim, to engineer the Holy War, to draw Kellhus to him, and so on, he was wrong on several things.

One, he thought the world was "closed" and that the Outside was not a major influence on the Inside.  We know this is plainly false.  Two, he imagined that he possessed the Thought, when it was the opposite, most probably.  The Thought used him, not the other way around.  Three, failing to recognize both those factors, he totally misses what Kellhus will be when he arrives.  Moe imagines himself the engine, where he is really just yet another cog.

For these reasons, Moe is an anachronism in the "New World" of Kellhus.  Indeed, so are the Dunyain themselves.  They all die, necessarily.  They were tools in a bigger plan, discarded once they were of no use.

“The days are new Chigra … And far shorter than the old.”

H IS A GENIUS

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO Spoilers] Kellhus
« on: April 25, 2017, 01:30:44 am »
I do think the Ordeal is a throw away, but not entirely.  The Ordeal matters, but only the Few among them.  The rest are only there to deliver them.  We are literally told this in WLW.  And as MSJ points out, the Ordeal's journey becomes Holy.  In other words, they are on a holy quest.  The end is something holy.  My guess is that Kellhus installs himself as the True Solitary God, or some such.  Probably through the same means as the No-God is made.  This is why he needs to get to Golottereth.  This may be why he didn't outright kill Meppa?  Water will later become, literally Holy?

Right. So we know that whatever comes about it's going to be Holy. So, to me, we can stop the nonsense about Kellhus wanting to join the Consult and be the No-God. That doesn't fit with whatever make this holy.

I am a firm believer in the "Akka will kneel" bit. I don't think Kellhus survives the GO, at least as far as going on living. He may indeed become The God or something like that.

;)

Haven't got to TGO yet. Finished Judging Eye last night, starting WLW when I get home tonight.

"Really big house" isn't by itself an adequate explanation - if your house was literally the size of a mountain, you would need to ventilate the interior. Ordinary big houses can get very stuffy in the inner rooms, and we're talking orders of magnitude bigger - and made of rock, not porous materials.

"Magic" is certainly the convenient short answer especially if, as you seem to imply, they used techno-magical apparatus extensively. I haven't seen that yet so I will have to keep reading to evaluate the hypothesis. The Magic in Bakker's books appears to be very well grounded though, with firmly established rules, not the kind of thing you simply use to hand wave something.

WELCOME NinthAcolyte!!!

YOU'VE GOT SOME AWESOME STORY AHEAD OF YOU!  NO LONG WAIT FOR TUC AFTER TGO, NICE!

Bakker might be of a mind to just pass the buck--he does so much fulfilling and breaking Tolkien's mold that his main reason that nonmen live in mansions is because elves lived in underground homes in the silmarillion--the nonmen have whatever ventilation the elves had
