The White-Luck Warrior / Kellhus a student of the Aporos?
« on: November 27, 2014, 08:43:57 pm »
Ok so we know that the Aporos is a sort of anti magic, regardless of the thematurgical implications. Do we think Kellhus has any knowledge and understanding of Aporetic sorcery? Could he manufacture a chorae (given the right materials) do we think he might know how? Could he work it out through inferred facts?

There might be Nonmen alive with knowledge of the Aporos.

The White-Luck Warrior / Do Sorceries objects work for the non Few?
« on: November 27, 2014, 08:39:00 pm »
As the title states.

Do Sorceries objects work for the non Few?

Do we have any examples in text of Sorcerous artifacts wielded by the non Few?

Literature / Book deals and purchases
« on: August 30, 2014, 06:20:39 pm »
Just thought I would start a general thread for Book Deals and Purchases. Interested to know what people are buying and any special deals in stores or any electrical retailer they find. I am UK based but please post wherever you are - please even reccomend the bookstore down the road.

---Purchases---

Ok so today I went trawling through the Works Store, the local market bookstalls and charity shops which I do every 2-4 weeks. I bought the following:

Ursula K Le Guin: The Left Hand of Darkness - Bought this as I have seen it recced. Nice to get in a charity shop.
Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Martian Tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs 1: A Princess of Mars - Bought this for kicks after watching the John Carter movie.
Roger Zelazni: Nine Princes in Amber - Lovely to get the first book in a series at a charity shop.
Brian Aldiss: Moreau's Other Island - Bought Helliconia Spring so may as well get more by the same author and keep my eye out for other Helliconia Cycle novels.
Stephen Donaldson: Daughters of Regals and other tales - I like Donaldson so dont mind a few shorts and what will probably be a novella.
Philip Pullman: The Goldan Compass - Have the other two and my copy was borrowed out never returned.
Paul Hoffman: The Left Hand of God - Nice cover art and a good blurb.
Maurice Druon: The Iron King Praised by Martin.
R. Scott Bakker: The Darknes that Comes Before Bought it to lend to someone else so they can get into TSA. Then they can return it as my other TDTCB was loaned out.

I saw quite a few others that I will be buying the next time I go for a trawl assuming they are still there. There was an R.A. Slavatore Forgotten Realms - a huge fat hardback compendium of the Drizzt ones in really great condition, there were another 4-5 from the charity stores. The wife is such a pain... god love her, if I was on my own I would have bought at least 8 more.

Anyway all of these came in at under £10: some in great condition and others ok, just old and slightly yellowed over time - perfectly readable though.

---Deals---

So the deals which I didn't partake in but will in the next few weeks - from the Works Store in the UK you can get:
David Gemmell Waylander with a new cover art (all of the set together look nice shelved with this cover art - its a white one if anyone is interested ill search and link). £1.99
Dan Simmons: Hyperion with SFClassics cover art (crappy looking) but still a great book and if you have it already its good as a loaner. £1.99
Terry Brooks: The Dark Legacy of Shannara 2: Bloodfire Quest. (They were selling the first one last year). £1.99
They have a deal on 3 for £5 which is a cracking deal, includes the above and a lot more if you are into other things.

Literature / Chalion series
« on: August 02, 2014, 09:09:21 am »
Has anyone read the Chalion series by Lois McMaster Bujold?

I read all of her published Vorkosigan saga up until 2002 (24 novels total) and while the quality sometimes did vary overall they were really enjoyable and the series generally gets good props.

I remember reading The Curse of Chalion around 2002 and really enjoying this book. Has anyone read the rest of the series and what did they think of it if so?

Ok so Aurax. Do we think he has Sorcery?

"Species wide graft" is quoted often, but once the Ark were so few in number would they have really forced that issue? I am not sure.

Also what else might he be able to do? He is the supposed surviving master of the Tekne and we have not really seen him yet which I see as a kind of indication he is some sort of reveal.

What do you all think about Aurax?

Ok so does anyone think that Titirga has any future role to play in the series?

I think it's Garet who has a theory that Meppa=Titirga?

Maybe TSTSNBN is Returnof Titirgaand hence Bakker doesn't want to ruin his return? lol

What say all?

The White-Luck Warrior / The Depths of Golgotterath?
« on: August 02, 2014, 12:06:57 am »
So how Deep does Golgotterath go?

Are we all in agreement we expect it to be the worst Topos in Earwa? The mostly thinly seperated place from the Outside?

A place worse than Cil Aujus, a place in itself so bad that an eye can grow in your heart, one which you try to see out of... If thought can take form to such an extent in Cil Aujus what could happen in Golgotteraths deepest depths?

I wonder if Golgotterath is bottomless?

Ok so just dropping a potential crackpot (less so in certain elements):

Titirga was blind as a child and was described as a different mark, I cannot remember the exact terminology think it was "muted" or "rinsed". I think of this as something to do with him being the first Cishaurim. Think on this, if he was also a Gnostic Sorceror as well as a Cishaurim, with his hot-headedness evident in the Atrocity Tales, would other Sorcerors even notice?

He has also being described as "grasping that which shouldn't be grasped" which I always thought hinted at Daimotic Sorcery. Interesting choice of the word Grasping as well - drawing parallels to Sesswathas Heart, which I think is a Humuncolous, wouldn't a Humuncolous be an Inward bound Ciphrang?

Just thought old Nostril Flaring, Caller of the Famed Voice, Weilder of the False Sun, Wearer of the Odd Mark, Grasper of the Shouldn'a'be Grasped Titirga the Fallen Hero deserved a bit of bigging up  :)

[EDIT Madness]: Title.

General Earwa / Incu-Holoinas - Is it a large Ciphrang?
« on: June 09, 2014, 09:03:20 pm »
Crackpot: The Ark is a very powerful and large Ciphrang (comparisons to Living Womb and the Horns.)

Taking this a step further, the Arkphrang could have escaped from the Outside somehow via the Inward. The Inchoroi on board are the souls which the Arkphrang has been collecting when in the Outside - there is no mention of additional Arks which you might expect from a galactic race. The Inchoroi being damned is their natural state - they are already damned, they escape from damnation to damnation. Their Mother has died and she awaits their Souls back in the Outside. The IF is the natural exploration of the technology required to pull the Ark back Inward.

The Ark and the Inchoroi should not exist. They broke the "boundaries of flesh" when the Ark crafted their bodies and placed their Souls in Flesh Automatons for perpetual servitude. Now the Ark is dead and the last remaining Inchoroi were not born before the death of their Mother - they are like lost children.

Maybe something still remains of the Ark, in one of the scenes a Synthese specifically thinks "Golgotterath will not be happy" - interesting phrasing.

Crackpot and I claim no truth but interesting thoughts. Speculations all?

I know we have a Power Rating going on in the Sorcery thread but I wanted to throw out a general VS thread - this can include Sorcery/non Sorcery, Consult, Dead Characters, ANY character is acceptable - reasonable speculation completely allowed as this is for fun.

I will give my VS as the two I think most powerful:

Kellhus VS Titirga

I think Titirga was ridiculously powerful by his descriptions and I always wondered how Titirgas "Famed Voice" would fare against Kellhus. I assume from descriptions that Titirga knows the Psukhe as well as the Gnosis - but could he also know the Daimos "Grasping things that shouldnt be grasped", or perhaps this just refers to what I believe to be his knowledge of the Psukhe "Different Stain". I think in the end though, Kellhus is too much, he can see the thoughts of Men. His Metagnosis is just too powerful and versatile, his Cant of Transposing is very strong in a combat situation and I dont believe we have seen a fraction of what Kellhus can do. At this point I think he is untouchable, no shame for Titirga though - I think Titirga is as far above everyone else as Kellhus is above him.

On a side note. I think Cnaiur is pretty much owning the physical fights in the world of Men - although he would get wrecked by the Wracu so Ciogli owns him. I wonder how Inchoroi fight physically,  I imagine them big, strong and hard as hell to kill. Cnaiur vs a Huge Ursranc Chieftain would probably be a great fight. Cant forget some Consult members who are pretty unknown at the moment. Aurax might be a wrecking ball - I hope so.

Any other particular fights anyone would like/are hoping to see and how do you think they would go?

The White-Luck Warrior / Kellhus/Others PoVs in TUC
« on: May 30, 2014, 11:46:58 pm »
Couldnt post a new topic in the TUC thread. Do we use this thread for TUC speculation?

Does anyone think we will get a Kellhus PoV in TuC and who/what do you think we will see significantly more of who we have not seen so far?

Literature / Great Aliens in Literature
« on: May 21, 2014, 09:49:14 pm »
Just as title says. Anyone like to post some aliens they like in Sci-Fi - tell me your reasons.

Ill start with two:

MorningLightMountain from Peter F Hamilton Commonwealth series. Absolute genocidal maniac. Like an Ultra Nazi that views all other life forms as a potential threat and therefore an enemy and seeks to ensure it continued survival into the far future.

The Hydrogues from Kevin J Anderson Saga of the Seven Suns just really alien and peculiar and I found them pretty scary antagonists.
