What if Kellhus implanted a fake map in the Coffers?

General Misc. / Re: Thanks

Yeah, I'll second that as well. I don't use social media either but I do post here and on one other forum whenever I feel like I have something to contribute (which doesn't happen very often unfortunately). But I do enjoy reading the discussions here.

No issues with the current forum, but if you're changing I say go Discourse, only because you've already tried SMF and phpBB.

News/Announcements / Re: More Subforums
« on: March 07, 2014, 11:59:16 pm »
What about:
1) Moving Philosophy & Science, The Forum of Interesting Things , Writing, Literature , and RPG Discussion down to the bottom of the page, call it the General Discussion forum, and make it's header something like "Other topics(Non-Earwa)", and

2) Move Misc. Chatter out of "general discussion", with no subforums, and moving it down to Earwa underneath Atrocity Tales. This can remain the "catch-all" Earwa thread that it is now, but it will still have the effect your looking for.

I don't know if anyone cares for what I have to say at this point but I'll just note that I support this idea. I still find it a bit strange for general Eärwa talk to be lumped in with other Misc. topics under one forum, and I assume some newcomers have as well.

It would be better IMHO to have a 'General Earwa' forum (with no subs) at the top of the Earwa talk as you've outlined in point no. 2, which is similar btw to what the Westeros people have done with their ASOIAF board.

I think this thread is hilarious. Everyone noting when they dropped out.

I guess I'm the only one who dropped out halfway through through the third book then...

I thought the first two books were enjoyable, but the whole premise of having gods, Gods, elder gods, ascendants, lords, demons, demon lords, bonecasters and whatnot all with varying degrees of power seemed a bit silly tbh. It was also frustrating because every time I thought I learned who the final boss is going to be it turns there is oh a demon final boss on the next level who has ever more power than the last one. But despite that I soldiered on until at one point through the 3rd book where I said fuck it.

The White-Luck Warrior / Re: Thorsten's Metaphysics of Earwa

If this theory is correct wouldn't that imply that the Inchoroi only became damned after they came to Eärwa? (I got the sense that that's what he thinks anyway, but I could be wrong.) That contradicts what Wutteät said at the end of TWLW.

I don't think he addressed that in part II but I'll have to reread it.

On a side note, I would love to hear Thorsten's thoughts on the Inverse Fire and the White-Luck.

In the light of what has been said above, what happens is that the Inchoroi intruded into the superconsciousness of Eärwa which emerged from the minds of mankind (and, prior to that, the Nomen) which shaped reality and, to a much greater degree, the nature of the Outside. In their own world, there was either no superconsciousness, or it was of a very different nature as it was dominated by Inchoroi minds, but on Eärwa the Inchoroi (especially after the wars against Nomen) were a minority and the nature of the Outside was dominated by mankind, leaving no influence to them. As a result, they were caught up in a reality which did not judge them by their own standards, and therefore damned by the superconsciousness of Eärwa, the God. The role of the human members of the Consult is rather similar, although they lack the 'excuse' that their amoral conduct is genuinely part of their nature.

I know this was written before tAE books were published, but am I correct in assuming that this theory was invalidated by the revelation that the Inchoroi were damned long before they came to Eärwa? (Assuming that they're right about that). Or is the emergent super-consciousness of the Men/Nonmen of Eärwa universal?

To be fair, he could've been referring to himself as 'we' the way that Inchoroi in TWP did.

But to be honest, of all the mysteries in TD, the one about whether Aurdrey was abused or saw something or whatever I find the least interesting... Of course it's terrible for someone to be abused or exposed to those crimes, but from a narrative PoV who gives a shit?

Thought I would write this up because some things really bothered me on my read through of TDTCB.

  • Stupidity:
    • Upon leaving Ishual Kellhus:
      • Did not have a map
      • Did not know where he was going
      • Did not have any survival skills (No ability to hunt, trap, or forage. No idea what was safe to eat in the forest)
      • Was not dressed for winter, despite the fact that it was it was Autumn and Ishual is high up in the mountains.
      • Had no idea how dangerous sranc were.
      • Allows his body to waste away without using his amazing Dunyain intellect to figure out how to find food in a forest

Did Kellhus even have a choice in leaving Ishual? Because if he didn't, then I'm not sure how we can blame him for any of this. I mean it's one thing to put yourself in a situation that you're not prepared for, but to be forced to survive and accomplish an almost impossible task in an environment that's mostly alien to you is another.

There is no doubt that he got lucky though.[/list]

General Earwa / Re: Coordinating TUC Purchase
« on: January 31, 2014, 02:47:00 am »
Are there any official sales figures for the previous books? Or any good estimates?

I saw a 200,000 figure on the Westeros, but that was more or less a wild guess tbh.

It would be funny if we all preordered the book together and then a year later we hear that Bakker hasn't sold a copy since TUC's release.

Yeah, I'm on Goodreads (participate little) but I didn't recognize the distinction as Wilshire suggested. I'm not sure if that distinction is apparent outside of Goodreads though. A review and a rating do seem like two aspects of the same thing to me: a review is the reasoning by which you make your rating?

I should have clarified, I was talking about the full length reviews that you see at some sites like the Wertzone, or from book critics. It would be absurd to write a review like that if you haven't read the book in it's entirety. But saying in a few words why you did or didn't like it (or why you couldn't finish it, which is what I did btw), is a different matter, and (IMO) not that different from giving it a rating.

Isn't there a difference between writing a review and merely rating a book? The star ratings are just a way for people to say whether they liked a book or not, not a rating based on an objective study of the merits of the work in question.

Once I've read about a 3rd into a book and I can't stand it, then it becomes fair game to say that I did not like the book IMO. And that's exactly the equivalent of the one star rating according to Goodreads: 'did not like it'.

Its a damn shame he doesnt get more attention, he has such a unique voice.  I was really skeptical of him trying something not fantasy, but I loved it.

All these posts here are making me wonder if I should attempt to finish the book at some point.

Do you think it was unfair to read the first few chapters before abandoning it and giving it 1/5 stars on Goodreads?

I think there is a tendency among people who dislike the series to confuse depiction with indorsement to some extent. Other than that, I agree with Francis Buck almost entirely.
