I doubt if anyone thinks these are actually good covers.  The art budget is just probably in the neighborhood of 10 bucks.

Then again, it is Overlook we're talking about, they probably think it's the bee's knees...

Lol.

*Back at Overlook HQ*

"There is just something about this cover... I feel like we could do a little different to really make it pop..."

*Me jumping up and down with Somnambulist's art*

"You know, maybe it's the face..."

*Me jumping up and down with Somnambulist's art*

"Yeah, yeah... Hey Johnny! Yeah, let's get rid of this stock face cover..."

*Me jumping up and down for joy with Somnambulist's art*

"Yeah, fuck it, let's just put Bill's face on the cover. Yeap, same art and border... just a new face. The fans are onto the stock face photos."

Lol holy shit

That's horrible. It's not as bad close up just... wow. Even though the other TAE faces had no resemblance to the series, they still had some attitude to them. This guy is just like... "... hi."

They also replaced the wheel around the portrait, which I noticed on my lhysical copies had the months of the Julian calendar for some inexplicable reason. Does this kinda look... cheaper?

Just needed to share my conniving.  A good friend of my owns a chain of bookstores on Long Island.  I have him on tab usually to get ARCs for books that pique my interest(They get ARCs by the crate-load that they never even have time to read).  Not especially noteworthy given my relationship with him, but I did call in a favor for a TGO copy.  With every intention of buying a half-dozen copies with the official release, I can't help but exult in getting my grubby hands on the goods ~2 months early.

Looks like I need to seduce a bookstore owners.

And also... you know if they get a crate of them, maybe you could get two, and 'someone' might later be able to buy one off of you - post official release of course.

Lol.  I am not one to be cozened by such flattery.  It's amusing, Greg is such a devout Tolkien aficionado(we're talking complete memorization of the noble houses of Finwe, Feanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin.) that the few times I've spoken to him about SA I've always sold it as: The Old Testament meets Lord of the Rings with Aragorn replaced with Paul Atreides.  He finds it interesting but don't think he's opened up TDTCB at any point, though I know he owns an edition.  Compounded oddity is the fact that for him this is just another book to mail me, but for us, this is the One Ring—the holiest of holies, the precious.

Wilshire you may have misunderstood me.  There is not a crate of The Great Ordeals in a warehouse in Long Island somewhere—I think my contact has like four or fives copies.  I meant that they'll only receive a few copies of ARCs from various publishers and authors and yet the sheer volume of custom they receive is relegated to crates in storage.  If you are someone like Adam Whitehead or whomever, you are getting ARCs to actually review!—so of course you will read and share your discourse.  A bookstore? Doesn't really factor into their timetable or business model to use them.  But they still get them and I will scrounge for my merest fractions.

Lmao - I was going to make the sameish comment that Wilshire did but erred on "oh, he probably means boxes of random ARCs."

I wonder if bookstores should start doing reviews? They already do staff picks and mini-reviews for select books at the Chapters (Indigo) in Canada.
