News/Announcements / Re: TSA T-Shirt Contest

Saw a meme and thought it would make a good shirt:

"A School, Bala! Conphas has brought a School!"

General Earwa / Re: TSA in different Languages
« on: January 25, 2014, 04:48:36 pm »

However, I don't really think that German translation of TSA could be better than the original, because the second language would be inherently better in expressing some points of Bakker's philosophy.
Thanks for sharing, thats pretty interesting. BTW don't worry about tl;dr. There are some big posts here... this isn't your normal gathering of internet peoples.

It kind of sounds like the reason a translation might be better is that the translator has the ability to change the text, which kind of sounds like cheating. Kind of like taking a book that was poorly written, and having a really good writer redo it.

Also, the sentence I quoted about confused me. Why would the German translation not be potentially better if it could "be inherently better in expressing some points of Bakker's philosophy."?

And yet, it's the only way to avoid ambiguity. The IPA isn't that hard to learn, honestly, guys. :D

Remember when this was said?  I still don't believe you, and I've got the last several comments of confusion as for the why :)

So, as an individual without any experience, where would be a place to start helping?

Looks like $25 to purchase the PDF, which seems kind of steep for me right now. I don't know that I want to start with that until you're absolutely sure thats the rule set you're going to use. You mentioned some free ones out there that are close, would you mind  explaining what disadvantages there may be using those to figure out wtf is going on as opposed to the $$ one? (I'd rather start with time investment and see where it takes us).

Aside from acquiring some base knowledge about P&P rpgs, what would be useful to this Project? I recently started a series re-read so I'm in a position to collect information along the way. We've got the Almanc to help with some stuff, but thats mostly plot based analysis, so what else might be valuable?

Development continues!

I know nothing about p&p rpgs, and have never played one, but if there is something I could do, or learn to do, to help out, let me know.

I haven't been following extremely closely so forgive me if this have been throughly covered,  but have you found a workaround for the magic system? It seems to me that a schoolman would either be game-breakingly powerful, or entirely useless, depending on the situation.

...Then again, after some brief though, we've only ever seen upper lever schoolmen, so I guess development could be scaled without too much difficulty.

The only thing that is an issue, in my mind, if the fact that 'magic resistance' is either 100% or 0%.

Offensive cants and defensive wards could be adapted to party use (buffing, projectile protection, increased evasion% etc), such that even an encounter with fully choraed opponents could leave a schooman with some capabilities.

Entertaining ideas like stone/earthen armor that offers some physical protection to wielder/party-member come to mind.

Literature / Re: What do you recommend by Isaac Asimov

I think, like with a lot of his books, I, Robot was retroactively tied into his other books. I believe Asimov wrote a lot of short stories for sci-fi magazines and he ended up writing novels based on his own general thoughts. It feels like he imagined a general future for the universe, and everything he wrote was a part of that same future.

As a scientist turned sci-fi writer his stuff is fun to read... Makes  me with that Micho Chaku would start writing, that guy has enough crazy ideas to fill up volumes of sci-fi. (As I wrote this I looked him up, and he's actually made several books, though mostly non-fiction, and I didn't see anything striction sci-fi).

I appreciate that, but I'm going to be real honest with you, that is not the slightest bit helpful  :)

I feel that everyone who read the books and enjoyed them should make a username and have a presence here... but that's just me.
Just how small do you think Bakker's readership is? :o

Well how many books has he sold? 500k?
5 books so far, 100k each.

So at max around 100k people. But I think many people bought multiple copies and distribute them... So more like 80k, But those are just people who bought books, not people who might have liked the books.

So cut that in half, and you get a nice round 40k fans, total, worldwide.

Perhaps the server can't handle that many :P but it would be nice to get them all here.

edit:
which makes a Bakker fan about 1 in million (ok more like 6 in a million )

Dunyain always sounds odd in my head but thats the best I came up with, I'm glad you agree.

btw which Momemn? There were two options :P
Aion is actually Ainon, but otherwise I agree.
My memory is so feeble... Guess I was thinking of the mmorpg called Aion, woops.
Kian is Kee-ahn for me.
I figured that one would be different for some. Probably makes mores sense that way.
I always pronounced Sranc as if it rhymed with tank, but your way of saying it sounds way cooler so I'm officially stealing it.
You're welcome :)

Not particularly comfortable with these phonetic spelling things, but this is my best approximation. Anyone got something way different?

Dunyain - doon-Yain  (yain - like 'chain' but with a 'y')
Aioni - Ay-on-ee  (like Ion [charged particle] with a y)
Kian - Cain (like Cain and Able from the bible)
Dagliash - dag-lee-osh
Momemn - mo-mem-n, or Mah-mem-en ... I'm never sure what to do with the 'mn' at the end there.
Sranc - Sir-ah-nk  (though 'sir' is clipped, barey any 'i' sound).

I'll post more as I get to them, in case some kind verbal discussion ever ensues.

The whole reason I started reading Asimov is because its my Dad's favorite author. The Foundation trilogy that I pulled from his dusty bookshelf was much older than myself. He never much got into fantasy, always scifi, but recenly he's been reading mystery novels. I gave him DotD and thought it would be a hit (I'm very much my father's son) but he thought it was 'just ok' (I was shocked).

Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation.

Or at least thats how I started. I really liked Foundation, Empire was pretty good, and I can't remember if I finished Second Foundation. Ahh yes, the Seldon Prophecy... takes me back.

Also notable, The Gods Themselves was a nebula/hugo award winner and there really aren't that many books that have won both. I haven't read it but it is on my list specifically for that reason.

The only other 'book' I read by Asimov was "I, Robot", though its not so much a book as it is a collection of related short stories. It's nothing like the movie (lol), but I enjoyed it.

A Tale of Swayal

Final version and its own snazzy page. Thanks again to Curethan, who made this final version satisfyingly stronger, and to delavagus who took it upon himself to post my story and handle all the pesky formatting issues in my word document (as there were a bunch of html tags), including his own little section and epigraph touches (formatting only).

Cheers.

EDIT: My mind is already slowing working on the third (and last good fanfic idea I've had). Hopefully, it'll make a neat trifecta.

Read it. Loved it.

I don't much like writing critisisms to works like this, but I will say that this seemed to fit the overall feel of TSA. I really hope Bakker developes the Witches more in TUC or in TSTSNBN
