The Thousandfold Thought / Re: Favorite Scenes
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:54:57 pm »
I like Inrau's final scene. Recently started reading TDTCB again and this scene continues to blow me away. It reeks of hidden meanings that you can't possibly understand the first time. Hell even the 3rd time I still learn new things.

The absence of love is pain. When it is there, in whatever form that may be, it is beautiful :)
Wait the pain is always beautiful? Dunno about that.

Anyway I was just quoting Princess Bride. Not sure why but the bits of the posts I read reminded me of that movie.

Callan you're joking right? Whore is used in place of Anagke for the whole series. Maybe its time for a re-read.

No, no water. Meppa is the Last. Kelmomas will just rampage about in the secret halls murdering and eating his kills. Fanayal will regret stepping into the Heights.

Literature / Re: The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe

I read the first book and stopped. Is it supposed to be scifi-y? Because I kept waiting for it but was dissapointed when nothing really came through. There were hints, but not any answers, and the second book seemed to start off terribly similar, so I stopped pretty quickly. Can't decide if it was entertaining enough to go back to or not.

I liked the characters well enough, and I feel like this was a big set-up novel, but for me there just wasn't a ton of 'wow' moments. I read it very quickly and ended up feeling more confused than anything else, so that could have something to do with it.

I started out really wanting to like this book, and ended up slightly disappointed.

I'd be interested in hearing more of your thoughts as to why I'm wrong :). For whatever reason I want to like it, but I feel like I'd need to read another book or two in order to find out if its worth it or not. You could say I'm very much still on the fence about this.

I think the misogyny is probably something you can always find if you're looking for it... Or maybe I'm just ignorant. Either way, can't say I noticed anything out of the ordinary with DotD. Though that's probably all I'll say about it, since I've read one too many arguments about the topic, and it never goes anywhere but in circles.

Lol have you ever listened to Lewis C.K.? He's a comedian, and he has a skit about the merrits of slavery. Boils down to "every great achievement in human history was accomplished with slaves". Gave me a laugh, you should look it up.

Quote from: TTT, p11, 2006 Canadian paperback
He narrated Kellhus's inexorable rise to ascendancy in the Holy War, both from what he himself had witnessed and from what he'd subsequently learned through Proyas. Nautzera had heard, apparently through informants near to the Imperial Court, that a man claiming to be a prophet had grown to prominence among the Men of the Tusk, but the name Anasurimbor had become Nasurius by the time it reached Atyersus. They had dismissed it as simply one more fanatic contrivance.
Missed that bit that I put in bold. I don't know why but I find that terribly amusing. Especially since they freaked out immediately about Miathanet when he seized power, but didn't look twice at Kellhus.

I've never heard that. Could have been something Nau/Seswatha said, though I would think that was more like "wow there's a bunch of it buried, this place is so much bigger on the inside" kind of thing.

I suppose Kellhus would have gotten the Gnosis at some point, yeah, but probably not until after the battle. And at that point, I'm not so sure the Inrithi would have won. Were they on the trajectory of victory before Kell showed up? I thought he kind of saved the day. What would he have done if he had to run all those miles back and found his host in shambles... I guess then Maithanet would have eventually showed up with all the Mandati in tow, but that would have looked kind of bad for the Thousand Temples, relying on the Mandate to win their Holy War.

Yeah pretty much, but hey you never know. Perhaps I'll stop into a more seedy looking one then? The World would certainly need to do some conspiring though. If its summer I'll wear my t-shirt so you can recognize me as well... lol.

TSTSNBN will come out. Have faith!

However, it seems very much like the idea grew beyond that in intervening years. TSTSNBN is definitely still coming and satisfies what Bakker seems to think is an intractable (neh, impossible) problem. My personal guess is that the 'seed idea' was some kind of moral problem within dogmatic religious constraints that Bakker couldn't see himself around then.
Sounds to me like Bakker couldn't see past the circumfixtion :P

I don't know if Jitters is supposed to be real place or not, perhaps it is a famous coffee chain? I was out in Amish country for a job and I went to a place called Jitters several times. It was a tiny coffee shop (they had good lunch for pretty cheap). Hilariously, I just went to their website:

http://jitterscoffeehouse.org/about-jitters/

Though I didn't get that feeling much when I was there, I laughed when I thought about Bakker, or Disciple, sitting in that place.
(not nearly as good as Tim Hortons).

I love Tim Hortens (they removed the apostrophe a while ago didn't they?). Wish there were any where I'm at.

Happy reading FB. I thought they whole thing was pretty hilarious, but that's my type of humor.
