Seems like the classic tale of a prophet then.

Absolutely not!  With all due respect of course.

The archetype of the prophet who marries a whore is of course Hosea, who only symbolically did this to prove a point, and did not presumably consummate the relationship.  For someone to openly do such a thing has only one precursor (Magus) unless you are a Dan Brown fan.

It seems fairly straightforward to me that the narrative is very up front with Christ imagery, but upon further examination Kellhus bears a far greater resemblance to Simon Magus.  I'm sorry to say, no one else even remotely fits the bill.

The question is - how familiar is Bakker with our sources on Magus - from canonical Acts of the Apostles, to apocryphal acts, to the clementine literature and homilies, - I even wonder how familiar he might be with Hellenistic romantic fiction and the recurring motif of false death and crucifixion survival.

This is a "crazy speculation" thread, after all, but I'd be curious to know what Bakker knows about Simon Magus, or even perhaps the Tubingen school of radical critics who associated him with Pauline non-Torah based Christianity.

While we're on Crazy Biblical/Messianic Speculation, let's do Kellhus vs. Simon Magus

Simon Magus is a foreigner among the Jews      Kellhus is a foreigner among the Inrithi

Simon Magus is a sorcerer                               Kellhus is a sorcerer

Simon Magus is instructed by Simon Peter        Kellhus is instructed in the "Gnosis" by Akka (note he is now Simon Peter analogue)
in healing thru the Holy Spirit

Simon Magus claims to have been crucified,     Kellhus is circumfixed, and may have survived by supernatural means
but survived by supernatural means

Simon Magus arouses controversy by marrying Kellhus does just the same
a whore.

Simon Magus is condemned by Simon Peter      Kellhus is condemned by Akka

Simon magus creates a highly elaborate form    Kellhus creates the meta-gnosis
of Gnostic religion

Simon Magus proclaims equality of the sexes     Kellhus creates female schools of sorcery

Simon Magus declares himself essentially a god  Ditto Kellhus

Simon Magus has a statue of himself                Kellhus becomes emperor
erected in the imperial capitol

Later, Simon Magus (Kellhus) is eventually defeated by Simon Peter (Akka) in what essentially amounts to a wizard's dual.

The Jesus similarities are a smokescreen for Kellhus being another Simon Magus, aka false messiah.

General Earwa / Re: Why are the Inchoroi damned?

Do we have any reason to believe that damnation isn't the default setting for Earwan souls, and that salvation has to be earned via some heretofore unknown mechanism?

This could tie in with Kellhus as a messianic figure who will bring knowledge to the world of how to avoid damnation, whereas previous generations didn't have that option.

I was sort of thinking of Simas as a "skin spy - Wathi doll" but it does make sense that it had to be some sort of accidental rare occurrence.

If the Inchies could either make ensouled skin spies, or count on it occurring randomly at any appreciable rate, it would be game over for the humans of Earwa.

It only makes sense that this single or exceedingly rare freak occurrence would be embedded at the Mandate, rather than being used to chuck fireballs at nomadic northern tribes.

But, does anyone have a proposal on how such a freak cosmic occurrence could take place?

I'm doing a re-read in anticipation of the new book and noticed this :

Doesn't Simas' admonition that one has to be skeptical of one's own skepticism come dangerously close to apprehending paradox for someone later revealed to be a skin-spy?

Or am I misreading this?

I want Sonambulist's illustration of Ironsoul with text on the back reading "no whistling on the slog" (lol)

I live in a metro area of around 1,000,000 - so this should help me find the other 5-7 people who read Bakker in my area.

(I know characterizing Leibniz's philosophy as Panglossian really isn't fair, but I'm sure you guys get my drift.  This is TSA, not Westeros after all.)

I love Dr. Pangloss.

Lol, I know whom I'd rather have a beer with.

Unfortunately, the fictional and satirical nature of Dr. Pangloss the cheerful Galley Slave earns him a bad rap as a scholarly epithet.

Meanwhile, as co-discoverer of "The Calculus", Leibniz gets way more street cred than he deserves with his "an infinite being can only create a finite universe"  -- Seriously?  You'd think a man who apprehended the anti-derivative would do better than that.

We need to understand him in the context of a world where there simply weren't many options for even the most rational and secular minded individual.

Dear Madness :

Here is a good, answerable question that won't betray anyone's trust I think :

Does TUC offer any answers or clarifications re : the significant Theodicy problem in the Bakkerverse.

It certainly stands out to me that despite cleaving closer to Paganism, which has easier answers to the problem of Theodicy (Yo guess what?  The Gods ain't perfect and frankly they are kinda douchebags)  - we have pagan style Gods with a significantly "higher theology" than the pagan Gods with corporeal bodies and fallible non-omniscient minds.

For philosophy geeks I'm hoping there isn't some cheap Leibniz-style cum Pangloss gloss on why his Gods seem significantly worse than the astonishingly appalling God(s) of the Levantine semi-monotheistic traditions.

(I know characterizing Leibniz's philosophy as Panglossian really isn't fair, but I'm sure you guys get my drift.  This is TSA, not Westeros after all.)

I subscribed to the podcast on the iTunes podcast app and I'm not seeing it yet.

Oh yeah, I encourage you to make more of these.  You can talk ASOIAF with anyone these days.  It's hard to find TSA chat.
