So...
1/4 into the book (or so), and he died. Who else is saddened by this? He was my favourite character in the second trilogy.

Indeed, one of many sad moments in TUC. Especially as it came on the heels of his reunion with Zsoronga. It wasn't even all that shocking, really. Just sad.
I'll hold further comments until you're done. :-)
Maybe I missed it but how did he get all Whiteluck Creepy all of a sudden? I was reading pretty fast but it seems like he was his own person falling in love and getting from Serwe... then he switches to the creepy whiteluck narrative style.

How quaint!

I think we were either seeing him through Yahtwer's perspective, or Yahtwer simply began to take over him. His last thoughts seemed to belong to him, though.

So, I finished the book!
The thing that was the real killer was that Sorweel's death really only served to reinforce two vitally important points:
1. Kelmomas will become the NG and therefore, is invisible to the Gods (Yatwer, with Sorweel; and Ajokli, with Kellhus).
2. The closer we get to Golgatterath, the more the Gods can manipulate Men.
Mind you, I didn't realize any of these things until they became apparent at the end. But when they did happen, I kicked myself for not seeing the signs!
I"m there with you. I was really feeling for Sorweel. Yatwer didn't care about any of the changes that he'd gone through, though, and just put him to work when the time appointed came round.

Lots of people being used: Moenghus, Sorweel, Proyas and in the end, Kellhus!
I take comfort, knowing that at least he mostly got what he wanted... which was, I guess, almost exclusively Serwa's love. And it seemed like Yatwer accepted him in some kind of embrace, perhaps implying that he went to heaven. That's more than what could be said for... I think literally every character in this series.

You can say that again. How many visions of a heavenly afterlife have we received? And compared to the many, especially in TUC - one after another - of characters falling into Hell. Sorweel didn't end up so badly, after all.
That Umbilicus-assassination scene was one of the early highlights for me. Thrilling! Combining the WLW with that failed Umbilicus assassination scene in TJE.

I irrationally dislike Sorweel so much, I was actually pleased he died, for my own sake too.
Although I have a feeling that is not the last we will "see" of him...

Oh, I get what that's like, dude. But the book disappointed me in that regard. Out of the four characters that I liked, three were killed off in this book and one of them was taking on the No-God when last seen, so chances are...
And out of the three characters I dislike, all three of them quite clearly survived.
I don't see how we could see more of him, though.

ASoIaF taught me well to never really like any characters. I'd say I am ambivalent to about 95% of characters I read, and dislike about 4%, perhaps liking 1%. Obviously that is a rough estimate. But I am hard pressed to even recall the last character I read that I actually liked.
That being said, I think we will see Kellhus and Sorweel again, Outside, looking in, perhaps. Or their own internecine battle in Hell.

Oh, it's the opposite for me. I usually attach to a character, and to me, the story becomes that character's story. The same happened with Stannis in ASOIAF, who is probably going to get killed off in the next book, so yay!
And as for seeing those two again, I sure hope so. As much as I like Sorweel, I can imagine the Second Apocalypse without him, but without Kellhus? He's been the definitive influence of the series, so far.
