Title: Thread for the Threadless (Surrogate Quorum)
Post by: H on July 05, 2017, 01:09:48 pm
Just figured we could have a thread for everything that doesn't warrant a tread of it's own.

I just got back from a cross country road trip with the family.  Yeah, never doing that again...

I'm just too damn old to be driving that long and the kids were restless, to say the least.

Woohoo, sounds like a party lol. Sorry to here that. Hate it when 'vacations' are more stressful than work.

Well, a bad day on vacation is still better than a good day at work, but man, that trip back was a slog.  12 hours to SC (to sleep) went from an estimated 12 hours to 15.  The 11 back went to 13.  None of that is particularly terrible, but went you've got 4 restless kids and 2 restless babies, further seems forever.

See my confusing shipping-confirmation-email shenanigans. I'm going to have to cool it, as tomorrow is release day and it's bound to turn up in some of the shops here... Buying another copy would be overdoing it.

I already planned to get the eBook and the hard copy, so I just ordered the eBook from the .AU site and will now just wait for my US Hardcover to come in.

They are going to be making a new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which made me realize I have still only seen less than half the existing episodes.

Also, GoT is back this Sunday...

Yeah, going too try to not be a whole week behind this time, but doubtful if it won't be that long from Sunday until I can actually get to watch it.

Andy Serkis reading a couple Trump tweets as Gollum (http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/watch-andy-serkis-read-trump-tweets-as-lord-of-the-rings-gollum-w491897): not worth a thread but definitely worth a laugh. Also, showcasing the motion capture technique vs. acting is amazing. What a great actor.

Yeah, caught that Gollum-Trump bit as well. Very precious. He is a great actor, although there are a ton of VFX artists contributing to the final result. It's not like Andy Serkis gives his mocap performance and the computer spits out this end-product. Anyway, end of rant.

Lol, I definitely don't think they were trying to diminish the work involved by others. Just that many people - as Colbert's kids there - seem to think that motion capture is more akin to CGI like Transformers or something than just a costume basically (albeit a very complicated one that takes a lot of people).

VFX artists have been rolling their eyes in reaction to Serkis's comments in the past.

Important factoid is that this also reflects the awful working conditions in that field.

Besides, I *am* looking forward to War for the Planet of the Apes.

Yeah, Serkis strikes me as an (A)ctor in the (L)iterature sense. How dare those code monkeys think they add to his performance ;).

Really want to catch this in theaters. First two were glorious.

I still remember being in a packed cinema for the first one (I've lost track of their unfortunately hyper-generic titles) and being amazed when Caesar first yelled "No!" at Draco Malfoy. The entire theater went dead silent/gasped, and you could actually feel the audience's energy change from there on into the finale.

TIL that there are devices that measure fluid density, temperature, and flowrate using the Coriolis effect.  Basically, you can measure all of this without a sensor physically interacting with the fluid - I find this amazing.

Andy Serkis is an amazing body actor.

I watched an interview with him on and he was stood up and then he mimicked an ape and his whole body seemed to change when he did it, it was barely noticeable whilst at the same time making him appear completely different. It spurned me to do a bit of reading and Serkis seriously impressed me.

He is billed on Star Wars as well so hopefully has a hand in bringing to life Snoke.

Just saw War for the Planet of the Apes. Superb film. Great presentation as well, Dolby Cinema, except for the 3D. This movie was just not photographed for that format, and I was longing to see it in 2D instead of this eyestraining conversion.

It sure is great acting from Serkis. Still, and however, if you look at Serkis's face and Caesar's, they are not exactly carbon copies. The VFX artists have done a marvelous job.

Was that on Graham Norton when Tom Holland - who is a trained dancer apparently whose performance as Rihanna on Lip Sync Battle is amazing - followed up Serkis' impression, SR?

Yeah, he apparently played Snoke and one of his acolytes played Maz Kanata - and of course their company does the motion capture.

Glad to hear it's good. In that Colbert link above, they show a clip which showcases the different CGI layers making the difference in their faces.

Hey Madness,

Yeah it was on Graham Norton, just his whole bodyshape and the way he switched between poses. Really interesting to watch!

Jut like his potrayal of Gollum - non human movement.

Andy Serkis would be the best person I could think of to play a Sranc!

[EDIT Madness: Not sure how this ended up in a thread in News/Announcements but all fixed.]

Got my hardcover. Amazon packed it poorly and the book arrived with went pages, bent cover, a smashed in corner and accompanying tear in on the spine.

I forget to be grateful sometimes of Subterranean Press. Thanks Emmy, wherever you might be, for packaging my more recent shipment with care, bubble wrap and packing peanuts included.

Yeah, it's been over a month though.  I know media mail is slow, but I'm not sure it's plausible to take this long unless something happened to them.  Although it's not just me, so where did all these books actually go?

Nope, certainly not me either.  While on vacation, we ordered something with our Amazon Prime, a pool toy so the kids could use it while we were at my father's house.  It got to the Post Office and they immediately marked it as delivered, despite it being literally impossible for them to drive to the house in the one minute they claim it took, from the time they start delivering to when they marked it as such.

Turned up 2 weeks later, at the house...

My guess it they are in a dump bin someone carted over to a dusty corner and now has 1000 things piled on top of it, only to be found in about 5 years when someone wonders, "what is all that crap?" only to promptly throw it in the trash.
