General Earwa / Re: Chorae
« on: August 08, 2017, 12:13:02 am »

Chorae: the wiki says "they belong to lost branch of sorcery called the Aporos."  The branches of sorcery all take their names from Greek words. “Aporos” comes from the Greek word “Άπορος,” meaning “Destitute.” des·ti·tute- without the basic necessities of life.

kickass. the relevant greek terms here are chorismos ('separation') and choris ('separate,' 'apart,' and--in some translations, 'outside').  these underlying greek significances suggest that the 'tear' in 'tear of god' is less about lachrymation than laceration.

the two and a halfbooks so far are sufficiently enjoyable, and might be summarized as forest gump goes to hogwarts.

can definitely read caves of steel as stand-alone, though it fits into the broader robot/empire/foundation continuum.  it's the original nerd-boiled novel, i think: detective story laid over geeky secondary world.

the ooloi in octavia butler's lillith's brood are creepy like the inchies.  geocentric aliens in clarke's childhood's end.

lew is shot through a wormhole and joins up with escaped criminals from a living inchie prison ship such as a genetically enhanced tabby cat, a gnostic sorcerer head-in-a-jar, a rogue bashrag with a heart of gold, and a supermodel with green skin who happens to be the best swordsperson in the galaxy.  together, they return to earwa and execute every last motherfucker up in here.

Quote

Madness: But I can't really say anymore about it.

sologdin: does leweth return?

Madness: Yes. He is very important for the middle three-sevenths of the book.

sologdin: is he a cannibal?

Madness: Can't really say.

sologdin: is he a walking topoi?

Madness: That's a dumb question. No offense.

sologdin: does lew have the gnosis?

Madness: I can't tell about the gnosis.

sologdin: how much is he involved with AI black semen?

Madness: If you think that I will spoil that, then you are crazier than a shithouse rat.

good work, madness.

and good thread, locke. your NG mimicry lays bear that it is firstly a reading machine. its role is hermeutical.  slick.  the reader is the NG, and the text pops us into its perspective. we've even got trisk and others running around with talk of murdering the world to get volume VI.

go for the basic sequence of end of eternity, the robot books, and foundation books.  some moments are weaker than others, but th whole is great. (i'm still working through the empire books, which fit between R and F--can only assume they'll be consistent.)

the gods themselves kicks ass, and is among the hardest of hardcore science fiction. nightfall is alright, a well conceived but perhaps ineptly executed thought experiment--maybe better as short fiction.

his nonfiction guide to the bible is very readable and cool, too.

childhood's end is cool, and has, in my reading, some RSB antecedents.  the fountains of paradise is less impressive, i thought, but it's a hugo/nebula winner and therefore should be read.  i didn't much care for the rama stuff and hated imperial earth.

i think the whole damnation thing is a red herring that all'y'all have inexplicably chased for eight years across at least three boards now.

therefore, logicians are damned.
