General Misc. / Re: DUNE movie cast revealed

In what sense? This is where personal bias comes in. I wouldn't mind if they ditched the whole 'other memory' thing because I think it's kinda lame (which is a bit ironic given that it's a focal point of the series /and/ that it's my favorite series), but if you're talking about e.g. ditching Fremen suicide attacks then I vehemently disagree.

Well, I wasn't actually talking about anything in particular, just taking literally everything that is in the book and attempting to display it visually on screen.  I mean, prima facie, that is nonsense of course, but I think that is something like what many people would "want" even if they know that such a thing can't exist as a matter of fact.

So, all I am saying is that Villeneuve seems to know how to make somewhat entertaining movie and so I'll trust him to do what he thinks would be "best" until he shows me that maybe he doesn't.  I don't know what his vision of "Dune the Movie" is, but I think he knows enough about movies to know it isn't a literal translation of the book.  I can't pretend to know for a fact which elements are better in or out, so I'll leave it to a dude who seems to have a clue.  Again, until he shows me that my trust is misplaced.  There is no "necessity" here though, nor do I imagine any though.  Just because he did well with things before means he must do well with the properties of Dune.  But I do think there is a fair chance he will.

As you like to say, something like "we'll see what happens."
I see, yes. I initially kind of felt like it would be DoA just because I thought Blade Runner 2049 had a lame plot and Frank Herbert's hack son was 'advising', but I'm more optimistic now, but yeah, we'll see.

In general, I'll just trust Villeneuve until he shows me I shouldn't.  I have a hunch this won't be "book" Dune in any case, which is likely for the best, because I don't think you can realistically make the book a movie and not have it turn out like crap.

Haven't read it (and not going to for a few days coz' busy) but let me just say that I'm happy to see biorxiv links brought up here!

How does that make him have free will though? This is how he truly was as a person, he was destined for the Egg of the King, destined to be a member of the God-Hand.

Well, if he had no choice in the matter, then there isn't anything to discuss, it was all fated from the get go and no one could do otherwise.  Well, except perhaps the Skull Knight, but even that could be questioned.
What's exactly wrong with that tho? Also, remember when the Skull Knight tried to kill Griffith and instead tore a hole between worlds? It'll be interesting to see how far their 'white-luck' extends, won't it.

Oh, I think he had free will, but in some cases, when he did do those horrible things, I don't think he had very many options.

Well, there was always the option then of just sacrificing his "dream" and not selling them all for it.  But that was always more important to him than anything.  Which is the root of the whole thing, really.

The Unholy Consult / Re: "Kellhus is dead, but not done."
« on: February 27, 2019, 04:11:25 pm »
Logistically, that's now a hanging prison attached to a salt statue right at the top of the world's most unassailable fortress and in the hands of the Consult.

Is not that somehow similar to a situation in which the mutilated started? Prisoners of the Consult, neck-deep in the enemy's territory and plans. If Kellhus would hi-jack the body of a random skinspy or even one of the mutilated, that is where his magnificent bastard villain anti-hero hero card will play in it's full strength. The plan A is to crush the inhabitants of the Arc with sheer power of sorceror schools. The plan B is to ruin them from within when they finially considered themselves victors.
That does seem to be the way things lean towards.

Besides, the Dunyain seem to struggle with non-logical paths, and specifically Madness and Hatred. They also suffer from an over abundance of confidence and an inability to see flaws in their plans. Also also the inherent instability of a massive amount of assumptions based on increasingly finer and finer statistical models utilizing smaller and smaller groups...

All combined to indicate that some totally bonkers suicide-resurrection thing with low low likelihood of succeeding would be exactly the type of thing a traditional cadre of dunyain would fall victim too. Its just like Moe Sr. writ large, misunderstanding Kellhus'  Madness.

The question really is whether or not Kellhus was able to circumnavigate the influence of Ajokli and the other hundred.
Bros... Kellhus is dead. He failed. Ajokli failed. He might've been a prodigy among Dûnyain but there are FOUR of them left ruling the Consult. It's not going to happen.

So getting back on topic, what are people hoping for in terms of the visual style for the world? I know the director has stated they're spending a long time in pre-production specifically to create a distinct aesthetic for the movies and would ideally become as indistinguishable from Dune as the worlds of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings are in terms of adaptation.

Personally, I know that the artwork of Bungie in the Destiny franchise has definitely scratched the "Dune-feel" itch for me on numerous occasions, from armor to weaponry to technology, a lot of the designs just nail that old-but-new, science-fantasy look better than just about anyone.

I also would not at all mind them drawing liberally from the cooler aspects of David Fincher's adaptation, and, of course, the remain Jodorowsky material. It would be a fool's error not to take advantage of that psychedelic whirlwind of creativity.
It was David Lynch you scrub, and I agree. Even some of its innovations are cool and feel in place in Dune, such as the Guild Navigator + associates design. Honestly, just making it like the Lynch version with 2049 technology and without some of the stupid innovations such as the 'voice weapon' and the Baron having a bad case of full body herpes it'd already be a pretty great movie.
Jodorowsky's Dune overall sounds fucking terrible, but there were some cool ideas like e.g. in this pic https://imgur.com/gallery/dAnut I like the design of the Harkonnens as androgynous flamboyant nobility.

Now read Blindsight and Echopraxia and all of sci-fi will feel meaningless and boring too. You'll have no more fiction to read.

Isnt this ominous and atmospheric without being too heavy? The lyrics once again remind me of Bakker. Kellhus etv. Penetrating illusions...

Damn what's with those earrings? Looks heavy. Also, it's not my personal prefered cup o'tea of music, but respect to that guitarist for rocking a skullet and not being ashamed of it.

I've been listening to the Dark Souls 3 soundtrack a lot.

I think you guys better all calm down now lest we all get the 'talk' from Madness.

Also, say you like kebab. You can buy kebabs and enjoy them, put chili sauce on them like normal human beings etc., but you can also get pizza with kebab. Another medium to enjoy it.

Clearly he knows that a lot of us have read the book, so he would not be imperatively telling us to read it. Rather, he's stating that he just finished it himself, to which I can only say: Great! Now read Messiah, it's probably the best one in the series.
