The White-Luck Warrior / Re: Seswatha's Elju(s)
« on: July 02, 2013, 11:59:48 pm »
I think the connection is less metaphysical and more "what did I have for breakfast yesterday? I gotta watch my cholesterol." Point being the elju serves as the Nonman's ground and re-orients the Nonman's sense of self by telling him what he's done, how he did it, who his friends and enemies are, what he swore never to do again etc. Stuff like that, really practical stuff. It's literally keeping a person around to remind you who you are.

I think if the connection was more between souls then Mekeretririgaighagigiggggg, one of the most powerful Nonmen with a very storied history, wouldn't have elevated a sranc of all things to that position.

Literature / Re: YOU MUST TELL ME ... What else are you reading?
« on: July 02, 2013, 06:38:41 pm »
Re-reading WP at the moment. Really taking my time with it, letting all the details sink in and trying to imagine all the descriptions as vividly as possible. I've been on a big history kick lately so I'm really appreciating Bakker's attention to detail and little nation-specific idioms. Makes the prospect of the upcoming Consult scenes even more horrifying because of how grounded and authentic the rest of the world is.

General Earwa / Lack of skin-spies in the glossary
« on: July 02, 2013, 07:15:23 am »
So any ideas why skin-spies are mysteriously absent from the TTT glossary? I guess if the TTT glossary is supposed to be read as an historical document it makes sense, since skin-spies are a new creation of the Tekne, but I've never actually been told that by Bakker or anyone else on this board. So what gives?

This isn't really that big of a deal, I'm just trying to spark some conversation in this lovely forum of ours :(

Certainly true, but as long as there's a, for the lack of a better term, commonality in all of our interpretations I don't think it would be very intimidating at all. If we got 10 wildly varying explanations for what the Damnation machine is, then it's just gonna leave new members feeling like they're being asked to study Ulysses with us. But if our interpretations are all within certain bounds, then everyone knows the only thing missing are some key details.

As I see it, the big questions in the series are: Kellhus/Moenghus/The Dunyain, the Consult and associated shenanigans, and the metaphysics of Earwa (with plenty of subtopics like sorcery and topoi). I don't think the problem with an official FAQ is the length and breadth of these topics, but the lack of definitive answers. I propose that the "answers" just be the interpretations of different members. So like, if the question is, what is Damnation, I'd say that to me it is a law of the universe as objective and arbitrary as that of gravity. Then you can put Wilshire's interpretations, Callan's, etc. etc. I think it would be interesting that way because you'd get wildly varying interpretations and, frankly, that's what I think makes these books so fascinating. It would tell new members that we don't have it all figured out, and they get an idea of how deep these topics go to encourage further discussion.

Hey guys, just wondering if other people are having problems with the chat room like I am. Usually I don't see anything, but other times I get a log of the last dozen or so messages sent which is cool, but doesn't happen reliably enough that I can get in on the action. Is it just firefox or something? I'd really like to talk to some of you guys 'bout this shit in real time, lol.

General Misc. / Re: So, whut up with male 'privilege'?
« on: June 12, 2013, 10:04:15 pm »
To be fair, this is one of the better discussions of male privilege I've seen on the internet. Everywhere else devolves into either invective ALL WOMEN ARE WHORES bullshit or hysterical claims that by simply having a pair of testes your every thought and action is an endorsement of rape culture.

I feel that TUC's climax, much like Darkness', will be a quiet expository scene about the universe's metaphysics. I think Bakker is gonna try and get at the thematic heart of the books, which (I feel) is a meditation on objective morality and how helpless we are in the face of awesome forces. Sure, there might be a battle at Golgotterath/Dagliash, but except for being curious about where Bakker's twisted imagination is taking us next, I'm not excited for the battle scenes in particular.

That said, I think now would be a good time to remind everyone about how fucking metal the last battle in WLW is. Goddamn.

The Thousandfold Thought / Re: Favorite Scenes
« on: May 23, 2013, 08:45:24 pm »
The Skaeos scene is so fucking chilling, man. There's something so unsettling about the Holy War getting ready to march, all these nations, all these leaders and generals and warriors and slaves, all eyes set on Shimeh, yet no one has the slightest clue they've been infiltrated by a cabal of horrific eldritch monsters from the north. There's such a palpable menace in that, especially when you consider the fact that probably the last time anyone saw Sarcellus or Skeaos is when they  went out to take a piss, only to get murdered by a skin-spy.

Kinda gushy dance music, but you can't go wrong with those synths.
