Author Q&A / Power Levels

I don't think anyone disputes that the Gnosis (or Metagnosis) is the strongest magic, but as far as the rest of the sorceries, how would you rank them from highest to lowest in strength?

TGO ARC Discussion / [TGO SPOILERS] The DREAMS
« on: May 25, 2016, 02:32:59 pm »
The dream sequences have always been my favorite part of the books. I think the dream sequences in TGO are by far the most compelling from the reinterpretation of the Celmomian Prophecy to the final sequence in which we glimpse the No-god. I was just wondering what everyone else's thoughts were on them, specifically the final one.
I reread it last night, and I had a few thoughts/questions.
1. Who is the person in the dream? - I first thought it was Nau-Cayuti, but it specifically says it's a nameless wretch. The other NC dream sequence seemed self aware that it was NC and this one did not. I'll concede that the trauma of finding one's self in the belly of Golgotterath could eventually wipe away the sense of self, but I think this is meant to be someone else.

2. Is this dream a remembrance of the FA or the SA? Akka's thought that the SA had begun seems to indicate that perhaps it is a recent event, perhaps a nameless wretch that had been captured in the last few years or maybe the last few weeks.

3. Evidence of a soul trap? Several people on the forum have theorized that the No-god is a sort of soul trap that becomes animated when enough souls are captured by the sarcophagus. This sequence seems to support that idea, what with the line of captives one by one drawing closer to the No-god's sarcophagus.

4. Did we just see the Inverse Fire? The nameless captive notices one part of the path which has a ceiling of fire. The Nonmen standing to the side are all staring up at the flames with tears streaming down their cheeks. The captive sees his reflection in the floor and thinks that his head is wreathed by Hell itself. As the Inverse fire, it seems a little underwhelming, however, we are seeing it interpreted through a dream of a person walking towards abomination of the highest order. Perhaps this is just part of the Inverse Fire. Edit - It says he knows the fire, and his reflection "wore Hell as a wig."

TGO ARC Discussion / [TGO SPOILERS] The Parts Appalling

I was just curious to know what parts of the book all of you found to be the most disturbing. My list in no particular order:

The whale mothers
Saubon's damnation and the link to the vision on Mangedda
Related - Kellhus abandoning Saubon at Dagliash
Kellhus banging Proyas (not for homophobic reasons, it just strikes me as disturbing what with all the mental anguish and the fact that Proyas has shown no propensity toward gay sex--I doubt sexual desire matters to a Dunyain)

General Misc. / A Cracked Moon

I was talking to Madness last night, and he reminded me of A Cracked Moon, who went after RSB pretty often. Here's an interesting article about her real identity.

TGO ARC Discussion / [TGO SPOILERS] Kellhus
« on: May 12, 2016, 03:15:34 pm »
What is Kellhus's intention?

I was pretty surprised that we got POVs from Kellhus. I wonder if RSB's test readers were once again confused about Kellhus (much like in the initial draft of TTT) which prompted some rewrites with Kellhus getting POV chapters.

I suppose that up until the end of the battle for Dagliash, I assumed that Kellhus's plan was to defeat the Consult with the GO and then figure out a way to close the world to the Gods (which I think we see in the new version of the Celmomian Prophecy--which blew my mind in slow motion btw). He takes great pains to show Proyas that the Gods care nothing for men (to get buy in for closing the world). Kellhus is completely prepared to sacrifice everyone at home. Then comes the Inch-Nuke and Kellhus's departure from the GO.

I think what surprised me the most in the book was that Kellhus went HOME. He was ready to sacrifice Momemn, and then he returns. Has he decided the GO is doomed? Is he going to try to build another ordeal? It wouldn't seem feasible, considering that all the Schools now march with Proyas. (It's my assumption that Vim-Mithriti was the last sorcerer in the Three Seas). So what's the plan now?

Do you have any plans to write short stories, or perhaps a novel, about the first apocalypse?

The White-Luck Warrior / Dreams

If this has been brought up before, I apologize. I've been gearing up for the release of the GO and rereading (and re-listening) to all the books. I saw in another thread, and I'm sorry I don't remember who originally said it, that maybe Seswatha is censoring the dreams the Mandate have. I think this seems really likely. Akka, having been away from the "shriveled pouch of Seswatha's heart" for twenty years, is having different dreams than the rest of the Mandate. I think having time/distance/direction between himself and Atyersus has broken censoring aspect of whatever magic fuels the dreams. Perhaps this is also why he has dreams about Nau-Cayuti also. With that extra space comes the ability to dream as people who were dear to Seswatha. I'm not speculating that NC was Seswatha's kid (though it's possible) only that they were close enough that there was an attachment.

Also, how does Kellhus experience the dreams or does he. He never grasped the heart. He did some sort of meditation thing with Akka during the Holy War. Does this prevent him from having the dreams? If not, I wonder how a Dunyain would experience them.
