Title: Video Game Thread! What are you playing?
Post by: Camlost on December 01, 2015, 07:36:35 pm
I'm a bit surprised it hasn't come up by now. I figured I'd broach the subject. What games are you guys playing, if any, these days?

I've always been a sucker for Blizzard games ever since Diablo II and Warcraft III. I nearly went pro in the latter, but let college get in the way lol.

I've seen that a few others of you are playing SCII as well. I am picking that up soon.

In addition to that, if anyone plays Hearthstone or Heroes of the Storm, let me know.

I am always looking for new games to check out too

[EDIT Madness: Title and stickied.]

The only game that I've played a lot and enjoyed were Heroes of Might and Magic. When I met my then-not-yet husband, we used to spend some time together, playing Heroes II on "hot-seat". And then, when I fell down with chicken pox (which at the age of 21 is a real nightmare), he lent me Heroes III, which helped me keep my sanity while locked for 3 weeks at my room and smelling like Soviet distillery (in case you don't know, the best topical treatment for chicken pox in adults is salicylic spirit - don't try it with kids, though). And then we bought ourselves a new computer so that I could play Heroes V.
But then I graduated, got to (up to three) jobs at the same time, so I quit playing computer games. Although last weekend my husband dearest got out a copy of Heroes three and we started playing it, for the old times' sake mostly.

Fuck yeah! I made some of my best friends when I was younger playing Heroes II on hot-seat.

I've been wanting to play more SC2 lately, but free time and I are rare acquaintances.  I still jam a few minutes of Diablo 3 every now and then though.

I game a lot in my spare time. Right now I'm trying to finish up the last few missions in Metal Gear Solid V.

I play on PC quite a bit but havent kept up with Blizzard games outside of D3. My Steam name is the same as here if anybody wants to add me.

Played about half of Witcher 3, got bored and stopped.

Currently only playing SC with Madness online but I am looking forward to some of the new games coming out soon. Should be a good year for gaming.

Loved Heroes 2. Heroes 3 was probably the high point of the series. In both games my favorite thing was to raise an unstoppable skeleton horde withe the Necromancer faction.

I'm currently obsessed with Medieval 2. It's a medieval combat RTS that came out in 2006 I think, but I didn't pick it up until recently. Really fun game especially for a history fan like me. Unlike most RTS which are about winning by destroying all the enemy units, Medieval 2 takes the more historical approach of taking into account fatigue and morale. If you troops are tired, they'll move and fight sluggishly. If their morale breaks, their ranks will dissolve and they'll be easy prey for enemy cavalry.

Another thing I love is that formations and battlefield geography are really important. Do I form my spearmen into a hedgehog for all-around defense, or march them in a column for more speed? In a siege defense, do I stop the invaders at the wall breach or draw them into narrow alleys to ambush them? A lot of really fun decisions to make in this game.

I'm pretty huge into gaming. Started as a kid when I was maybe three and my brother got a Sega Genesis with Mortal Kombat and the first Sonic. Color coded ninjas suddenly became my jam.

I play a decent variety of games, but I suppose most of what I'm into falls into a vague "action" category. Love RPG's, but it depends heavily on the systems used (I've never been able to get into turn-based things games outside of Pokemon, but I've also never really pushed myself to beyond a few rare instances -- most recently I can remember X-Com, which I enjoyed but sucked so bad at that I lost the drive to go on).

I was and kind of still am pretty into Halo. I used to be in it for both the gameplay and the story, but the story (and really the whole extended lore of the universe) took a sharp nosedive after Halo 3 to the point that I simply don't care about it anymore. Halo 5 had the worst story of a Halo game, but it also has easily some of the best gameplay, especially multiplayer, and I think the singleplayer of Halo 6 is going to be pretty fantastic as far as the encounters and level design.

Recently became a fan of the MGS series (I actually have a half-finished casual essay thing I wrote about the franchise). Despite tons of weird little quirks -- not all of them good -- I think MGS is easily some of the best in the medium. MGSV had, in my opinion, a pretty brilliant story that I don't think we'll be acknowledged for its genius for some time. MGS is weird when it comes to "story" though -- the actual plots are completely absurd and generally not very good, but each game -- particularly 2 and especially V, have incredibly clever meta-stories which involve the player themselves and their emotions more than most games ever try to.

The Dark Souls series is basically top dog for me though. I haven't ever played a game with such a mastery over the player's state of mind, while also having incredible gameplay, amazing worldbuilding/lore, and stunning art direction. There are games I would consider its equal, but I can't think of any I would consider superior.

I'm also into 2D platformers and action games, and play a lot of indie stuff -- even more so recently, since I'm trying to make my own game. I finally played Braid after hearing about it for years, and it easily exceeded my expectations. It's definitely one of the best and perhaps one of the most important games of the 2000's, and -- like Dark Souls -- is an exquisitely crafted piece of art where every element comes together cohesively. Soundtrack is fantastic too.

Anyone here who plays Elder Scrolls online?  I can`t seem to decide whether is a good idea or not......I loved playing Oblivion back in the day, so this game has a strong nostalgic pull on me.

Add me on steam: Fiddler

There are many people called Bolivar on steam dude!  Which Bolivar are you?

I tried looking for you but there's a million Fiddlers as well! I have the dude from the Command & Conquer box as my avatar.

I haven't played ESO but you might want to look into Oblivion modding, the game has come a long way in 10 years:

I played the beta ESO, thought it seemed passingly interesting but in the end not worth playing - which to be fair is how I feel about all MMOs, even the ones i do play - so I decided it wasn't worth a subscription as I could get the same thing with something free.

That said, there's nothing wrong with it. I'm not generally the biggest fan of ES anyway so it just wasn't for me. Though, again, that said, the modded ES games end up being superior products to the originals, and worst spending lots of time playing :P.

I'm currently considering Black Desert Online. I played a friends guest pass, its .... very big with lots of nuances and different things that make it seem more entertaining than your general run of the mill MMO. I might pick it up once I figure out how hard going back to school is going to be.

Also, played through Factorio. Good times there, not sure if its worth the price as its a somewhat short game, but still fun.

Recently played through "Fortresscraft Evolved!", which took probably 160+ man hours (set up a server and played with a friend, we both had 80+ hours). Fun game, but its not finished, though development continues. Might be worth picking up if you're interested in that type of thing. I got it at a severe discount so it was well worth whatever it was I payed for it.

Been playing Hyper Light Drifter, and now getting into the early stages of Dark Souls 3.

Hyper Light Drifter is a masterpiece, no question. Every element is a finely crafted and tuned to perfection, stunning art and atmosphere, super-challenging but fair and thrilling combat, and some of the most unique story-delivery I've seen in a video game in a long, long time.

As for Dark Souls 3, it has been shattering my brain with the awesomeness. The goddamn tutorial boss is more intense, epic, and beautifully staged/crafted than most enemy encounters you see in the entirety of an average big-budget game. And Dark Souls 3 is like fifty hours long.

Dunno if I can handle it to be honest.

Found that a few months back too. Great for a few spare minutes, any amount of extended play gets tedious.

If you want a real game, check out Jerry's Game also from Rick and Morty. It's nihilism incarnate

I did. It's not so much that it was bad but that the device team made promises and claims that simply were not in the game. This went as far as prerendered images posing as screenshots in their steam store page.
The game was lack luster. Although pretty it lacked the content of plenty of other games f the same genre that are half the price or less.

I have done little to no research into the game, but wasn't there talk of "DLC"?  I thought this first release was almost a beta (for lack of a better term) and it was to be filled out by future expansions/releases?

Maybe after-the-fact, after loads of negative reviews and pissed off customers, they may have said something to that effect - but they already ruined their initial release, and since this is basically a new developer, I imagine that will be the doom of the series and any potential it might have had.

I think they made a record for number of returns/refunds via Steam :P .

I can't believe there wasn't a video game thread! So I made one.

I am currently playing Dragon Quest Builders and it's basically Minecraft with better graphics and story. I decided to "role-play" the Builder as Proyas. To put it very simply, he dies at the Occlusion but wakes up in a place called Alefgard.

And oddly enough, I think he fits right in, but spends quite a bit of time weeping while resolving to help the people rebuild their cities and fight monsters.

For the longest time, I was playing Terraria with mods and Dark Souls 3 before that.

What are you playing?

Prepare to gag, I'm not kidding here, I have played ToonTown for years ... started when I was teaching my at the time 5 year old the computer and pulled it up and that's all she wrote. I've quit a few times, but always seem to pick it up again. Disney discontinued it ( 4 years ago? ) and it was picked up independently by some college students and got it going again as ToonTown Rewritten.

Has anyone played Age of Wonders 3, or its predecessors? They are criminally underrated. I've always thought the gaming mechanics would suit a Second Apocalypse game perfectly.

Right now I'm playing Elven Assassin on the Oculus Rift.

Recently I've been putting tiem into Factorio. What a great game.
Went through Fortresscraft: Evolved twice with a friend on our own server
Been about a year but we also used to play heavily modded minecraft, good times.

I got bored somewhere near the middle of Dark Souls 3. Honestly, I got bored of the combat. After defeating Dancer way to early for the lulz, and killing the mercenary guy, I kind of petered out.
Same deal with Witcher 3.

Funny thing with DS3 though, now other action-adventure games tend to underwhelm compared to how polished DS3 mechanics are. Sigh.

Looking forward to Shadow of War and AC:O, if I ever get around to them.

edit: oh and starcraft. I love starcraft.

AC 1, 2, and uh either Brotherhood or 3, followed some semblance of a storyline, and were great. Each improved upon the last in a pretty meaningful way. For this reason, I'd recomend playing them in order up until that point, as you'll notice the missing mechanics if you don't.

Unfortunately, the original AC franchise was planned as a trilogy, but the story has gone to hell since they made the decision to scrap that vision and milk the cash cow.

I haven't played them seriously since maybe AC3, as they felt like reskinned clones each iteration, with the addition of terrible bugs/patches/dlc and the rest of your typical fair for modern day releases that took weeks and months to fix. But hey, thats what you get when you churn out a whole 'game' every few months.

ANYway, AC:O looks like they have gone a new direction. Made it a bit more RPG-y, and less 1-hit-ko-every-enemy-and-boss-with-hidden-blade (in the first handful of games there was little reason to have anything but the starter hidden blade equipped as the doge/counter move was always your highest damaging attack AND fully mitigated any damage when timed properly). Which, if you ask me, sounds like it'll make for a better game altogether :) .

That's the impression i got from them as well. My favorite of the original series is the Ezio trilogy, which does a pretty good job of fleshing out the character. My biggest gripe with the latter iterations is that they completely ignored the present storyline following the Abstergo events of Black Flag. Now, I understand that those segments were never the most compelling parts of the game, but they were crucial to the overall experience.

I was lucky to only jump into Unity in late 2015, when they had more or less ironed out most of the bugs. Now, Brotherhood and Revelations were full of bugs.

Agreed, I tend to use the hidden blade for most things. Revelations had so much variation with the bombs  you could craft, yet I only tried a few of them.
I like what I've seen of Origins so far. My main concern is what will they do with the present storyline. I really hope we don't spend the whole game in the animus.
Title: Re: Video Game Thread! What are you playing?
Post by: Wilshire on October 25, 2017, 12:57:34 pm
Desmond's story was compelling and the 'present day' tie in with the Templar really made the whole thing flow really well. It made the stories seem more meaningful.

My favorite character was probably Altair, though I know most people really fell in love with Enzio when AC2 hit, and that's when they start branching out the story.

I listened to some interviews with the devs early on, and Desmond was supposed to be this ultimate convergence of assassin bloodline families, which allowed him to uniquely be able to play through basically all the past lives - and subsequently was supposed to be the ultimate present day assassin... Ah well, they scraped it all.

IIRC, I started getting tired of them around Brotherhood. After that, I basically did a speed run of whichever was set in America when it was released, and was very disappointed. I stopped playing for a few years but picked up Black Flag eventually, still pretty disappointed lol, so I didn't bother with Unity or any other titles that might have been released without my knowing.

My mindset for AC:O is to enjoy it as an RPG with cool fighting mechanics, basically pretending like its a stand alone game and not the Xth release in a franchise. Maybe that'll make it more enjoyable :).

I loved Assassin's Creed up until Brotherhood. Revelations was beautifully made, but I wasn't that fond of it. AC3 taught me a lesson about getting games too quickly. I spent a lot of money for a game that had some great, intense moments, but ultimately meh. :(

I have Black Flag, but have not played it. I have the Vita one for a bundle, but haven't played that either. Unity I refuse to touch.

Was playing a Nersei Proyas playthrough of Dragon Quest Builders, but I stopped at the final battle. Sometimes I do that with playthroughs because after the final battle is the end. :( Does have Terra Incognita though and that's like Terraria.

Will most likely do a Proyas build for either Dark Souls II SOTFS or Dark Souls III. Gee, I wonder what kind of build he would be.

After the original, briefly, Black Flag might have been the only one I ever gave time to because I was at my sister's for a period of months.

I have a feeling only the mechanics of ship-piloting were unique to BF, as opposed to others in the series.

DS3 is the only one I partially played, and yeah, thats a good setting to stick Proyas in, same with Saubon and Cnaiur as well. There's even a Cinder Sword in TUC lol.

DS in general seems like a great franchise, but I just don't have the time for it. Truth be told, I got tired of the dodge, roll, strike, roll, dodge mechanics. I could feel that I had missed much of the plot from the previous games, so what bits where there just weren't enough to keep me going. Fun game though.

That's good to know. Most reviews praise the scope of the game with it's impressively designed world and superior quest design, but criticize the  RPG centric combat and the plethora of bugs.

Without giving anything away, what's the story like? Do we get taken out of the animus again? One thing I didn't like about the last few games was how the present storyline was neglected.

I really want to pick it up, but I'm unsure whether to get Origins or Shadow of War. Sure, they're both very different games, but they have some superficial similarities.

Shadow of war will be my next.

But for AC Origins:
- the present time story is almost unexistent.
- there are some bugs but they are minor bugs comparing with other AC or the full bugged Bethesda games.
- I like the new combat style.
- The story is pretty well designed, not perfect like the Witcher but good enough.
- The world is very very big and there are lots of things to do.

Since it's coming up so much in thread, I held onto these two links regarding Assassin's Creed:

- New Assassin’s Creed Has the Most Realistic Reconstruction of Ancient Egypt Ever Produced (http://www.ancient-origins.net/news-general/new-assassin-s-creed-has-most-realistic-reconstruction-ancient-egypt-ever-produced-021686)
- This Week’s Giza Pyramid Discovery Was Already Built Into Assassin’s Creed Origins (https://kotaku.com/this-week-s-giza-pyramid-discovery-was-already-built-in-1820130886)

Thanks for the links.
The game is pretty realistic indeed.

I've been playing a lot of Dawn of War III lately, a real time strategy game based on the Warhammer 40k property. It's very similar to Warcraft III, where you build bases and units but with an emphasis on hero characters. The art and animations of the units and landscapes are awesome, unfortunately it might be the last time we get a game in the vintage mold of the genre with this level of production values.

I've had my eye on AC Origins, been hearing lots of good things about it. I just haven't been able to get into big budget action/role-playing games for a while. I really liked Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 but it was hard for me to get excited to play it and I gave up upon reaching the desert area. I feel like I'm really aging as a gamer where I just want to play computer strategy games but I might check out ACO when it goes on sale.

I played a bit of it but found the multiplayer too confusing (as in, how do I actually search for a game). I'll probably give it another shot though. The campaign was cool enough.

I haven't played any Dawn of War, but I might put that in the maybe pile.

Currently playing ACO, its fun but still an action-rpg, just heavier on the RPG this time around.
I might recommend you check out Shadow of Morrdor or its recent sequal - simply because there's a bit of army recruiting/building, though its ARPG too.

I know what you mean. I used to love RTSs and RPGs equally, but have found in the last few years more difficultly getting excited about RPGs, even when I pick one up that I've been waiting for a long time.

BTW, you should play SC2 :D .

I love all the words in that sentence, lol. DS3 Proyas or Akka build would be very satisfying - easy to Role-Play, especially post-TUC (you need to finish reading it!).

I really don't play many video games anymore and haven't for years. Recently, as time allows, I sometimes play random RTS games with some high school friends one night every couple of months or the knock-off emulator hardware (Arcade/Atari/NES) the SO got a couple months back - the most modern game I play is COD Zombies with the SO's kids or my nephew and that happens fairly infrequently.

Unnecessary preamble aside (I just like to wax about playing retro games), The Game Awards just aired and there are some damn cool trailers - specific to fans of DS on SA, Shadows Die Twice. Though, I'll also mention the Kojima silliness because the MGS is probably my all time favorite video game narrative ever.

Lately I've been playing the Real Time Strategy game Forged Battalion on Steam. It's made by Petroglyph - the studio formed by veterans of the Command & Conquer series after EA closed down Westwood. This one is a pretty faithful recreation of Command & Conquer gameplay but it has a massive tech tree, where players unlock customization modules to create their own custom units and ultimately assemble their own personalized faction. It's fun but a little simplistic - it's still in early access so hopefully the team can improve on things enough for a solid full fledged release.

My mistake, I was thinking of the more recent Planetary Annihilation. I redact my previous comment about Total Annihilation as I've never played it.

I found Dust: An Elysian Tail on my brother's steam account, so I installed it. Sidescroller action game - supposed to have a good story or something, we'll see if I can get through it... I was, and still am, looking for some kind of RPG - but I've found that I just don't enjoy them like I used to... But I want to!!

Oh, ok, I thought after I posted maybe that was what you meant, but couldn't recall the name.

I think the biggest disappointment I ever had with a game was "Rise of Legends" which was a horrendous, unfun game.  Reason being was that I really, really liked Rise of Nations, so I was pretty stoked for something along those lines.

I do really like "beat 'em up" games, mostly like the old Dynasty Warriors games, but I just have no time to play anything really.

OH man. Good. Glad I'm not the only one that thought PA looked amazing prior to release and was massively disappointed.

I might feel similar to No Man's Sky, but I was smart enough not to buy it. Since PA I've pretty much sworn off Early Access games. Or, at least, only purchase assuming no future features promised are forthcoming. So far, so good.

If anyone has any RPG suggestions for PC, I'm all ears.

I probably wouldn't have gotten Forged Battalion if I didn't know and trust the developer. That said, it's still very much an early access game and I think it has a ways to go to be something special.

I recently just got Act of Aggression because it was supposed to be the RTS successor to C&C Generals. It looked the part in screenshots and videos but got terrible reviews. I bought it anyway and after struggling to boot it up through various errors and crashes, found out the reviews were right, it's just not a very fun game.

RTS is in a weird spot where the genre really is too hardcore for most gamers today but in the process of making it simpler or more accessible, they move away from the things that would make veteran players want to buy it.

That said, I do think Dawn of War III was an outstanding release last year, at least on the multiplayer front. It's like the classic Warcraft III gameplay of base building and hero units but with modern day competitive mechanics to make the matches fair and progress naturally.

From what I saw it was kind of MOBA-ish, focusing on the whole 3v3 thing instead of 1v1 matches. Hotkeys were also pretty clunky from what I remember. I should give it another try soon.

Also, update on Kingdom Come: Deliverance. I'm about 12 hours in now. Great Old-school style RPG. The hud and UI look right out of Oblivion. Seems fairly historically accurate (although I'm no expert on 1400s Bohemia) So far loving it, very story-based, with good characters, writing, and choice. It's buggy as all hell right now, but hopefully that'll get patched. Don't even try to off-road with your horse, you'll just break shit. The save system is frustrating (sleep or drink a certain alcoholic beverage to save) but it's a welcome frustration, makes me more wary to enter battle with multiple or well armed foes. All in all I think it's a good game so far, I recommend it to any harcore RPGers. KC:D definitely does not hold your hand, but it's balanced.
Title: Re: Video Game Thread! What are you playing?
Post by: Wilshire on February 19, 2018, 02:18:56 pm
The concept of save anywhere, at anytime, really changes how games are played. I'm a big fan - since I like to be able to get up and leave on short notice - but I think it probably negatively impacts a lot of gameplay aspects. Making it frustrating, but not impossible, sounds like a good feature.

ETA: One example being Dishonored franchise. Stealth type game with some magic thrown in, there's a metric for going through each level without being seen. The concept is great - in-game its called 'Ghost' - and the idea of playing through the entire game without a single person seeing you is great... But I ended up just saving and reloading (f5 to save, f6 to reload) nearly every encounter. Kind of ruined the fun lol. I haven't beaten the 2nd game for that reason for all the stupid save/reloading that I'm doing. I think I'll restart and just play a normal game, and I think I'll get a lot more enjoyment out of it.
Title: Re: Video Game Thread! What are you playing?
Post by: Knee that Bends on February 19, 2018, 04:55:44 pm
great example, Wilshire, I'm a big Dishonored fan. I also find myself quicksaving in Skyrim or Fallout before I do anything interesting. Speech skill checks, fights, decisions, big purchases, etc. There's no way to regret anything in those games. What's the point of role-playing if you can't make mistakes? Especially in KC:D where you can fuck up literally anything. Trying to sharpen your sword? Aww you sharpened at the wrong angle and fucked the sword into oblivion and back. Makes me cautious of everything I do. And I feel like if I lived in Medieval Europe, that's what I would be like. Scared out of my mind about everything I do because I'll probably get myself killed. Immersion through fear, I love it!
Title: Re: Video Game Thread! What are you playing?
Post by: Wilshire on February 19, 2018, 05:08:10 pm
There's a name for it, and its called 'save scum' or 'save scumming' . Saving before a decision point and reloading until you get the favorable outcome.

I love Dishonored, and I'm disappointed I ruined the 2nd one for myself lol.

I'm guilty of this as much as the next guy I'm sure. Its a balance. Sometimes its fun to lose progress because of a bad throw of the dice, but a lot of the time its definitely not fun.

The Dark Souls franchise covers this up by having the save points at designated areas, but every death is basically just a re-roll. It feels like you are increasing your 'playing skill', and you are I guess, but that entire universe if basically built on save summing lol.

A lot of games add an "ironman" mode - or some other clever name for 1 save file, permanent death if you die. This is way too far for me. XCOM and XCOM2 are games that change so dramatically if you go through without re-loading every bad instance. Kind of like the difference of playing through as the White Luck Warrior or as a human :P . The loss of units, getting ambushed and fighting through bad positions, inconvenient enemy drops/placement, etc. etc., make for a much different play through. I don't know if I'd call it "better" - very subjective - but its far different.

Having loss to balance out success definitely changes a game's feel.

I might have to check out KC:D

I got about 1/3 of the way through Witcher 3 and got bored, put it down and never picked it back up. I found the combat disinteresting for some reason.

The last RPG I really enjoyed was probably Dragon's Dogma, which is without argument a lesser game lol.

Never playd any of the Persona games, but that franchise has been around a long time now. Maybe I should check it out.

A lot of people felt the combat was underwhelming. I always thought it was pretty good but that's on PC at high framerates, so the experience may vary across different platforms and specs.

I've been really addicted to Dragon Quest Builders lately. It's Minecraft but with strong player dorection through storylines and quests, plus Dragon Quest's 30 years of iconic monsters and art style. I played the hell out of the game on Vita when it came out and got it again for Christmas on PS4. I've been making different creations and sharing them between versions, to put them in my custom world.

I've clocked in almost 230hours of Crusader Kings 2. It's the only game where I can play a Catholic Noble who murder children is Praise by the Pope and can have sex with my siblings and/or murder them. It's good for role-playing as a three seas caste Noble. But there isn't a three seas map and I'm not up to the task of making one.

Just beat Dark Souls III. Holy shit that was awesome/frustrating. Amazing atmosphere, amazing fights, huge mistake going for a fucking sorcerer as my first character. Most of my early game consisted of getting killed in 2 hits by every other mob. Can definitely recommend. Finally beating a boss actually feels amazing after dying over 9000 times on your way there. Lots of Berserk references, so I'll just go ahead and assume Dora Vee has already played every single Souls game.

Pretty sure DV made a Paladin and called him Proyas or Prosha ;) .
Which, really, any TSA character name fits well into the eternal-hell world of Dark Souls.

Playing Valkyria Chronicals on PC, lots of fun. I find tactical turn-based games hold my interest a lot more than other games these days.

Started playing some Wargroove. Its like fire emblem (i guess?) or Advanced Wars - turned based combat with army recruitment and a hero character.

And Factorio, which continues to be endless hours of entertainment.

Starting Slay the Spire...
That keeps showing up all over the place, seems to be pretty popular.

Dark Souls III and its DLC are on sale on steam, so I ended up caving in and buying the DLC. Going to try and not to instantly spend 48 hours in there, since I've other shit to do. If anybody's looking for an immersive RPG with incredible atmosphere that has no qualms about kicking your ass, I can only recommend this game.

What does the DLC add? New bosses I'd hope.

I got bored rolling around after beating the second throne boss, but I can see the appeal. Finally beating a boss after dying a few dozen times was extremely satisfying. The biggest downside for me though is that it takes large blocks of dedicated time, which is becoming more and more elusive, especially because I'm terrible at these kinds of games lol.

New bosses, new areas, new items, new spells. A lot of the +3 rings can be found in the Ringed City for example. It is time consuming, but hey, isn't it more fun to get into one game heavily rather than 10 cursorily?

That actually sounds like quite a bit of content.

And yeah, you make a good point. Maybe that's been my problem with RPGs lately, jumping around rather than sinking into to one. Definitely something to consider.

Getting my asshole destroyed by Sekiro at the moment. The first boss alone took me fucking hours, easily on par with e.g. Sister Friede in difficulty, and the minibosses are no joke either. I didn't think I'd be into the Japanese thing, but they did a really good job with it. Smiler should be very into this.

By the first boss you mean Lady Butterfly?

And yeah, I'm totally into this game, it's absolutely amazing, but the Japanese thing is really not to my liking (I hate both Sengoku and Edo periods, at least). Also the plot is just generic so far, by far the weakest part of the game. Still, Sekiro is an improvement on Dark Souls combat system (and cuts a lot of unnecessary stuff in other places), and a great one at that. 100% worth picking up if you're at all into combat games. A bit of warning, though: Sekiro is likely noticeably harder than any of the previous Soulsborne games.

Yeah Lady Butterfly. I see, I guess I took you for being more of a weeb than reality allows. I agree that the plot seems very bare-bones, but I'm still not very far in (just got to the gun fortress, haven't killed any ghosts yet). I agree that Sekiro is an improvement. A lot of combat in Souls games is like, you roll away from enemy attacks forever until you win, while here, there's active clashing of blades. I quite like the deflect mechanic, although it does feel a little bit underwhelming at times when you're used to parrying being an autowin in Dark Souls :D. But it's great, it's pretty responsive overall.
And yeah, it's really fucking hard.
I do wish though that there was also an option to play as a female character, or maybe have some ranged spells, like in Souls games.

You have ranged attacks, quite a few of them (they become available through combination of Skills and Prosthetic Upgrades). Female character - yeah, I almost always play female characters, but alas...

I thought I'd finished the last boss yesterday, but the game keeps going xd. Will progress some more today, expecting my NG to finish soon. Which boss are you at? Also, controller or mouse+kb?

Controller all the way, mouse and keyboard feel like masochism! I'm fighting Genichiro at the castle, it's right around the middle of the game (I've watched all the spoilers). The fight's amazing, it's so precise and diverse, by far the best Soulsborne fight for me so far. I still have trouble with jumping to counter things, so I'm dying on his last phase. I'm getting pretty good otherwise, though.

Couldn't learn jumping on Lady Butterfly, sidestepping her just felt strictly superior, and the jumping guys at Mount Kongo I stealth-killed.

Genichiro is tough for sure (would probably rank him second in difficulty overall, from the bosses I've seen so far), but that's not halfway through at all! Well, it depends on which ending you're going for I guess, but I'd say more like 1/3 at best.
I'm personally trying to avoid as many spoilers as possible, playing semiblind, although I do sometimes watch videos when I literally can't figure out how to get to an area or where to go next.
Also, I'm playing with mouse and keyboard, it's all I know xd. I had to rebind my keys a few times but so far it works.

Yeah, it probably depends on where you've been before Genichiro, but I've cleared the monks, gotten some idols in the Depths, and went almost to the Great Serpent Shrine, so it's likely around halfway for me.

I surmise you have no controller? Yeah, it's not super convenient to buy one for PC, but I did at some point, and so far it's been really good, even though it's low-grade (the triggers are definitely way to stiff, so can't recommend it, really):
https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gamepads/f310-gamepad.html

And remapping helps for sure, I even remapped my controller for Hollow Knight (it has a horrible default scheme). But Sekiro feels really good as is.

By the way, Hollow Knight is an amazing game all around, and I really recommend it. It's easier than Sekiro, but might be harder if you wanna do late-game DLC content that was included as a challenge, basically.

Fun fact, Salt&Sanctuary, as well as Hollow Knight, is often compared to Dark Souls in terms of many mechanics (and at least Hollow Knight is also narratively), and Dark Souls was made by the same studio as Sekiro.

And Slay the Spire is a deck building game with mechanics fairly similar - but deeper and more diverse - to some singleplayer modes of Hearthstone, like Dungeon Runs and Monster Hunt, for example. And Hearthstone I play almost daily (though not singleplayer, since it at its core is a multiplayer game, unlike Slay the Spire).

Oh yeah Salt and Sanctuary is definitively a Dark Souls homage, they don't try to hide it at all lol. Also I should've said it is a good game, I probably did too much grinding and underestimated the power curve for the mage.

I've actually thought about getting into one of the multiplayer deck games but the price point and time just seemed too much. Slay the Spire is a nice game for people like me who want to understand CCGs at their own pace. (I've played Magic:TG but sadly just can't make the meet ups anymore.)

Yee, no  ;) The game's huge, especially if you try to explore everything. And yeah, I mean I have an old xbox controller but keyboard and mouse is what I know best, although it's definitely harder to use for Sekiro than for Dark Souls 3.
I've heard good things about Hollow Knight but personally I just don't care 1 bit for platformers.

Me too, but Hollow Knight is just that good.

Sekiro is really big (I roughly know how the game progresses and absolutely have seen all the zones and fights in them along with all the endings; I hate exploring and learning levels, I'm playing for combat), but at the same time it's faster to get through than DS3 in my opinion. Stealth really helps when you wanna clear levels, and its world design seems all around more compact.

Oh yeah, the price of modern digital CCG is obnoxious, can't recommend any of them.

And normal non-digital competitive Magic is even worse, I hear.

Unavowed: Great little point-click adventure game. Your character is a bit different than the usual - you were possessed and murdered a LOT of people. After the demon is exorcised the Unavowed offer you cover from being arrested in return for your services.

Unworthy: 2-D Dark Souls, very basic graphics. Boss battles are fun, currently fighting the Heir of Ambition aka a fucking archer bastard who was murking me on the daily until I put the game to the side to take a break.

Have a bunch more, I usually grab a lot of pixel art games on sale...

Gemcraft Frostborn Wrath just came out. Its like installment 5 of the series, is a glorified browser Tower Defense game, but i've been playing its various iterations for 10+ years and I find the very amusing.

Slay the Spire - rogue-like/lite, turn based deck building game.

Oxygen Not Included - survival/colony management game, 2d, from the creators of Don't Starve Together. You get a little colony, try to keep your couple of folks alive and direct them to building a space ship. Oxygen, Food, Heat, material management, etc.

Tried Sniper Elite 4 since it was super on sale and I've been eyeing it for some time. Gameplay loop gets boring. Its either too much hand holding, or too much effort, depending on difficulty level, with not a middle ground that I'm satisfied with. Fun to sneak around and headshot folks from across the map though. Good for when you're in that kind of mood lol

Disgaea 5. Chibi dungeon crawler. I was hoping for a decent SRPG but its mostly about manipulating character stats rather than some kind of strategy. Which, to be fair, most SRPGs are that way but usually they hide it better. I gather that this is by design, and what the franchise is known for so... They delivered? I just didn't find it that entertaining.

Gotten further in Unworthy. Game definitely worth the price, even for someone who kinda sucks at Roguelites/RogueLikes. The one thing I would say is the platforming aspect gets less interesting, though eventually you gain means of circumventing a lot of the mega-dungeon. Still I love the boss battles and there is a good bit of satisfaction in finding the right combination of weapons to kill particularly frustrating enemies.

Couple other Rogulelikes I started on are Mana Spark, Scourge Bringer, Ashen Forest, and Chrono Ark.

The last is a Card Based Combat system RPG with the death/resurrection/upgrade loop built into the narrative. I do wonder if I would ever unlock the whole story as you would need to loop through the game a LOT to get every cut scene I suspect...still I do think this idea of blending Magic/Pokemon/Digimon combat into an RPG has merit. It makes me wonder if this could be done without the roguelike like aspect, just a straight RPG where your deck gets better & better...

Deck building RPGs were popular in the early 2000s iirc. Baten Kaitos "eternal wings and the lost ocean", for the Gamecube, A couple of the Kingdom Hearts games, but at least Chain of Memories for the gameboy.

Also one of my favorite franchises growing up was the Megaman Battle Network games, I think there are 6 of them.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, is a more classic turn based game, but your attacks are all cards, drawn from a deck you build. Bonuses for certain type of cards played. I believe it had a later sequel but never played it.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories was real time, but still with attacks based on cards drawn from a custom built deck.

Megaman Battle Network (1 through 6, several of the later games had two different versions with slight different stories a la Pokemon) was something of a hybrid. Both sides got a 3x3 grid, you build your deck with cards, certain chains letting you use more in a tern or unlock souped up versions. Combat consisted of moving around the grid and firing your standard megaman blaster, with the cards you picked for that turn letting you do extra damage or giving you some buff, you get some X second before the turn bar refills, game pauses and you select a new hand to play, resume with new cards.

I'm sure there has got to be more recent versions of this but it has been a while. If you find any, let me know. I like the strategic flexibility of building a deck in an RPG.

Also, Slay the Spire is a popular roughlite deckbuilder, but there's little-to-no upgrades to your deck, its all about building it right, you can select incrementally higher difficulties as you complete the game loop each time.

My pride is being tested by the Korean roguelite Skul: Hero Slayer - you are a tiny skeleton who gets different powers from sticking different skulls atop your spine.

I've done much better in darker atmosphere roguelike/lite games, so it's a bit frustrating to continually die before the first boss unless I get a really good skull to wear like Ghostrider.

I think I am up to the (not really) final boss in Unworthy, which is good but I got kinda tired of playing. Knowing I am gonna have to do another playthru to get the true ending is tiring at the moment...

I have a love-hate relationship with these types of games. I enjoy them and their short game loops, small upgrades and little tweaks to player skill letting you go up and up... But then its sad to take a break and come back months later to realize you can't do half what you could be before you stopped lol.

Heh...Yeah I find myself worried about missing a day of "practice" lest my skills deteriorate.

I think part of the challenge with the harder roguelites is the repetition for sure. Since my last post I have yet to make it to the first boss again in Skul...and yet I *think* I am getting better?

Just finished Enderal, had to come by and share about it.

If you don't know about Enderal, it's a total conversion Skyrim mod that has a completely different story, world, landscape, mechanics, lore, etc. from the original game. The mod developers (SureAi) describe it as a "dark, psychological story with believable characters". I am convinced that at least one of the devs is a TSA fan. Let me give you a brief overview of the story:

As you show up to the continent of Enderal, you start to have vivid nightmares of an ancient apocalypse that happened thousands of years ago. There is an order that believes that these nightmares are a clue to help them with the impending apocalypse, which most people believe is not going to happen. A secret group of beings called "The High Ones" is said to behind these apocalyptic event.

That sounds amazing. I am ever enchanted by the idea of games with interesting stories and RPG mechanics, but I find myself largely unable to get into them as of recent years. Still though, total conversion Skyrim mods are awesome, and that particular one sounds fantastic.

I'll try to remember to put it on my list of games I'd love to play but probably never will.
