Would you like a jonathan strange board?

Thank you for the offer! There is surely a lot to discuss. I would have to reread the book before I can contribute, though; it's been too long!

I can actually hope for TUC, but I'm sad that Jonathan Strange and The Ladies of Grace Adieu are all we have from Clarke.  Have you tried the audio version?  Simon Preeble readls JS and it is amazing--includes the footnotes!

The Raven King is too good a character to leave alone for too much longer. The BBC adaptation starts soon, so perhaps Clarke is occupied by that? I haven't listened to the audio-book; I would think that the numerous footnotes would make it confusing, but judging from your reaction that is not the case!

Combining magical fantasy with pre-Victorian English mannerisms was genius.

Quote
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could."

My latest venture in World of Warcraft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOCm_KYo1qs

Pretty cool stuff Meyna. I don't know enough about WoW to know if this is impressive or not, but I liked the video :P (music was especially entertaining :) )

edit:
seriously, not sure why, but I listened to it twice because of the music.

After an expansion or two, encounters that were originally designed for groups of 25-40 become possible to "solo". There is a meta game that has arisen that revolves around pushing soloing as far as it can go (the best soloers are actually having success with current-expansion, 10-player content). The encounter that I did is currently a rite of passage for soloers, where next expansion it will become trivial and certain harder encounters will become the benchmark. It's not too difficult right now, but definitely takes some preparation.

In the end, most of the allure comes from juxtaposing soloing an encounter with the memory of requiring a large group to complete it just a few years ago. For example, here is the world-first victory of the encounter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSeVCw3hVgQ

Thanks for the compliment!

Malazan magery is great! There are a few other contenders that pop up as the series progresses.

Kellhus vs the Raven King

In Earwa, Kellhus; in England the Raven King; on neutral territory?  Raven King.  RK ascended so long ago, I think he's have Kellhus beat.  Maybe if Kellhus continues to pick up skills and powers though.

Yes, English magic seems a lot more developed and versatile, especially in the realm of control and illusion (as opposed to outright destruction). Who knows how far Kellhus has progressed with the Gnosis, though.

Kellhus vs. Quick Ben? His skills are equally mysterious, but he has certainly shown the potential for standing unopposed.

I wasn't crazy about Book of the New Sun as I was reading it, but it grew on me well after I had finished.

Take every opportunity to turn off screens. Do it. And water ;).

By the way, kudos again to Cüréthañ and Meyna for being the only SAers posting here to have graduated Erikson.

My thanks, though it was no great task for me considering how easily I took to the series as a whole!

I think this thread is hilarious. Everyone noting when they dropped out.

I guess I'm the only one who dropped out halfway through through the third book then...

I thought the first two books were enjoyable, but the whole premise of having gods, Gods, elder gods, ascendants, lords, demons, demon lords, bonecasters and whatnot all with varying degrees of power seemed a bit silly tbh. It was also frustrating because every time I thought I learned who the final boss is going to be it turns there is oh a demon final boss on the next level who has ever more power than the last one. But despite that I soldiered on until at one point through the 3rd book where I said fuck it.

As someone who has finished the main series, your assessment is accurate. However, the "final bosses" are there all along; it's just that the whole book is from the perspective of know-nothing mortals, so the veil is pulled back at a snail's pace.

Sorry, does that imply he doesn't have the constitutional support to do that to citizens within America?

Or is it already a given that he can put a hit on a US citizen and people will smile and nod, but the shock horror is that he can do it/get smiles and nods when their in another country?

Well the debate was supposed to be for the constitutionality of killing citizens abroad, rather than the morality, so the "smile and nod" thing shouldn't have been a factor.
If the technical writing of the constitution is so poor as to allow two or more interpretations of it's text, then it crashes out to being a matter of 'morality'. People yelling over other people.

Why would you have a debate if something has a singular, clear cut technical reading?

Originalism versus a living constitution is still a huge debate. I am personally amused by the theory that unifies the two in most weasel-like fashion: new amendments are simply "discovered" to be consequents of original intent. Protected classes, for example, weren't exactly brought into existence with the changing times, but, rather, the changing times caused the discovery of constitutional protections that were there all along!

I didn't include that only because we have Weapons of Animata and we were initially distinguishing the two because one kind seems to require souls, animas, and the other kind, listed in this thread, don't seem to...

Ah, noted.
